Food citizenship is considered a helpful tool for extending the debate about the rights and duties of citizens to the field of food, and for fomenting participation of all actors in the governance of agri-food systems. Despite its generalized use, this concept has still to be systematically defined. The objective of this article is to apply the analytical framework of citizenship to the food dimension in order to identify the features which, from an analytical perspective, characterise food citizenship. By reviewing (...) the available literature, we identify which are the constituent elements associated with the current concept of citizenship and we explore the treatment that different food theory approaches give to them. We also analyze what are the characteristics attributed to food citizenship by scholars and food movement practitioners. In addition, we propose a theoretical model of food citizenship structured into eight propositions. These propositions have as core ideas an extended concept of the right to food, the assumption of obligations, the combination of public and private behavior, the individual and collective participation, the empowerment of all actors of the agri-food system, the promotion of justice, fairness and sustainability in food systems, and a cosmopolitan character of food citizenship. The theoretical model of food citizenship we propose is a framework under construction, but we believe it to be a useful tool to stimulate theoretical debate about the concept, guide empirical research and foment citizen awareness about food issues. En este artículo se realiza un recorrido cronológico por las propuestas teóricas y experimentos que condujeron a la constitución del denominado principio de complementariedad, enunciado por Bohr. Se muestra como a dicho principio subyacen dos modelos clásicos (ondulatorio y corpuscular) que se toman como analogía para describir y predecir fenómenos de carácter cuántico. Dichos modelos son excluyentes en ambos ámbitos, clásico y cuántico; no obstante, los fenómenos cuantizados requieren la aplicación – aunque no simultánea - de ambos para conseguir un (...) tratamiento completo. La cuestión es si esta extrapolación de modelos, más allá de su adecuación instrumental, puede considerarse cercana a la realidad. (shrink)

Moving on to a higher level of schooling represents a crucial developmental challenge for children: studies have shown that transitioning to a new school context can increase the perceived importance of peer acceptance, popularity, and adaptation to the new social environment. The aim of this study was to investigate simultaneously the influence of interpersonal variables and personal variables on role-taking in bullying episodes from a longitudinal perspective. These variables were assessed on 41 children in their last year of kindergarten and (...) in their 1st year of primary school. The main longitudinal results showed that prosocial behaviors are more stable than hostile, victim, and outsider behaviors. Moreover, social preference—together with affective empathy—at t1 had a clear negative predictive effect on hostile roles at t2, while social preference had a positive effect on prosocial roles at t2. Social impact at t1 negatively predicted being a victim at t2. On the other hand, social preference at t2 was negatively predicted only by the victim role at t1. Social impact at t1 had a significant and negative effect on being victimized at t2 while was negatively predicted at t2 by the outsider at t1. Our study—even if exploratory—seems to highlight the existence of a specific, differentiate effect of two distinct social status indices on the participant role-taking in bullying episodes in the transitional period from kindergarten to primary school. This study investigates priming in an implicit word stem completion (WSC) task by analyzing the effect of linguistic stimuli characteristics on said task. A total of 305 participants performed a WSC task in two phases (study and test). The test phase included 63 unique-solution stems and 63 multiple-solution stems. Analysis revealed that priming (mean = 0.22) was stronger in the case of multiple-solution stems, indicating that they were not a homogeneous group of stimuli. Thus, further analyses were performed only for (...) the data of the unique-solution stems. Correlations between priming and familiarity, frequency of use, and baseline completion were significant. The less familiar words, which were less frequent, had higher priming values. At the same time, the stems with lower baseline completion generated more priming. A regression analysis showed that baseline completion was the only significant predictor of priming, suggesting that the previous processing of the stimuli had a greater impact on the stimuli with low baseline performance. At the same time, baseline completion showed significant positive correlations with familiarity and frequency of use, and a negative correlation with length. When baseline completion was the dependent variable in the regression analysis, the significant variables in the regression were familiarity and length. These results were compared with those obtained in a study using word fragment completion (WFC) by Soler et al. (2009), in which the same words and procedure were employed. Analysis showed that the variables that correlated with priming were the same as in the WSC task, and that completion baseline was the variable that showed the greatest predictive power of priming. This coincidence of results obtained with WFC and WSC tasks highlights the importance of controlling the characteristics of the stimuli used when exploring the nature of priming. (shrink)

Este artículo estudia la presencia del cine en la obra de varias escritoras españolas del siglo XX, atendiendo no sólo a las formas que ha adoptado su impacto estético –manifiesto en temas y recursos de inspiración fílmica–, sino al modo en que dichas escritoras, en tanto espectadoras “femeninas” con identidades complejas y muy diferenciadas, se sirven de los espacios de la literatura para dejar constancia crítica de su posición ambivalente hacia la representación cinematográfica y la influencia de sus configuraciones culturales.

Recogemos en este artículo, la biografía de dos mujeres privilegiadas por la vida. Peggy Guggenheim y GertrudeVanderbilt, tuvieron la posibilidad económica y social de impulsar a pintores de distintas procedencias y vanguardias. Sin la primera, el Surrealismo hubiese sido imposible, y, su triunfo, su comprensión y su custodia, se habría esfumado, siendo considerados sus representantes como un grupo de excéntricos deseosos de escandalizar a un público que no entendía su concepto del Arte, y, solo se quedaba en los desenfrenos, las (...) frases sin sentido, las orgías ó el snobismo de algunos de sus representantes. La recopilación que hizo Peggy Guggenheim de esta vanguardia, hace comprender al estudioso del Arte que, por detrás de esas arrogancias individuales, había un credo común, un deseo de captar la comprensión del sueño, cuando la razón no está en vigilia, un automatismo psíquico ajeno al razonamiento y, una experimentación de los ámbitos hasta entonces desconocidos como el subconsciente, el azar, la locura ó los estados alucinatorios. Peggy Guggenheim pudo haber empleado su posición económica en viajar, consumir ó tirar su dinero alegremente. No lo hizo así. Su posible excentricidad y sus escándalos, los canalizó por la vía del Arte, ayudando a sus amigos, abriendo Galerías increíbles como la del Soho de Nueva York, en la que: «...Los cuadros estaban montados sobre bates de béisbol, y, las luces se encendían y apagaban componiendo triángulos colgados de cuerdas como si flotaran en el espacio»... Y finalmente su auténtico amor por el Arte le llevó a comprar el Pallazo Vernier dei Leoni en Venecia, donde, ya sin excentricidades, el es- pectador puede contemplar y comprender la vanguardia que ella tanto amó. Desde otro punto de vista, Gertrude Vanderbilt, utilizó supuesto en la sociedad para impulsar, no solo a sus amigos sino a aquellos pintores, que, principiantes, carecían de nombre, pero tenían talento, carácter y originalidad. Ella supo ver esas cualidades en los artistas que impulsó, y generó una situación nueva, poco seguida por ciertos Galeristas actuales que apuestan por la seguridad, el nombre o la firma de los autores, sin mirar su auténtico valor artístico. Vanderbilt fue una gran mujer. Luchó contra los contratiempos de la vida, la incomprensión de sus contemporáneos y el concepto arcaico de los Museos de albergar solo a aquellos valores conocidos mundialmente. A ella deben su popularidad muchos artistas, como Calder, Pollock, los representantes de la Escuela de Nueva York, al igual que vanguardias difíciles de comprender como el Constructivismo, el Minimal Art, o tantas otras... El Museo Whitney de Nueva York, su gran creación, fue y será el trampolín del triunfo de infinitos pintores. Sin su perseverancia, sin su existencia, sin su lucha constante y sin su ánimo inflexible, muchos de estos artistas hubiesen sido desconocidos y me atrevo a decir que alguna vanguardia, hubiese pasado fugazmente, si Gertrude Vanderbilt no hubiese comprado ciertos cuadros para colgarlos en su Museo. La independencia de criterio, el ser plenamente consecuente con los propios actos y criterios, hacen que hoy, personas como yo, sintamos una enorme admiración por estas mujeres, que apostaron por el Arte, como móvil de sus vidas y como realización de sus personalidades fuertes, enérgicas y triunfalistas. Se estudia aquí la figura de un religioso benedictino del Monasterio de Montserrat, el padre Bonaventura Ubach, que dedicó gran parte de su vida al estudio de la Biblia. Para conocer mejor el libro sagrado realizó numerosos viajes por Tierra Santa y Mesopotamia durante los primeros decenios del siglo XX. La documentación recogida durante sus viajes le permitiría realizar dos de sus más importantes obras: la ilustración de la Biblia de Montserrat y la creación del Museo Bíblico.….

Los desarrollos científicos de nuestro tiempo han enfatizado la continuidad entre los humanos y nuestros parientes antropoides. Por supuesto, los seres humanos parecen diferentes a los animales no humanos, pero tales diferencias son más bien relativas y no absolutas. Muchos autores tratan, desde hace tiempo, de rellenar la separación discursiva y artificial entre humanos y animales, separación que ha servido a su vez para justificar la relación de dominio y control sobre los segundos. Sea como fuere, la progresión de las (...) pruebas no ha resultado siempre convincente. ¿Por qué? Seguiremos el camino contrario. Analizaremos algunos de los argumentos más transitados a la hora de justificar la frontera ser humano-animal y trataremos de mostrar su debilidad, así como la necesidad de avanzar hacia un mundo que sustituya la frontera por criterios prácticos de responsabilidad. Se ha elegido ordenar sus traducciones de acuerdo con las editoriales que las publicaron para distinguir la línea editorial de cada una de ellas.

Managing the relationship with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) is a key capability for most companies, because dialogue with stakeholders is a requested feature of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR). This paper analyses the relationship between businesses and NGOs in Spain. By applying grounded theory, the authors summarize this relationship in the dynamics of conflict and cooperation. NGOs' strategies vis-à-vis companies are categorized and the variables explaining different approaches on both companies' and NGOs' side are examined. The paper concludes by placing the private (...) relationship with NGOs in a wider context (the public arena), dominated by the approach-withdrawal dynamics between firms and NGOs. Data are lacking with regard to participants' perspectives on return of genetic research results to relatives, including after the participant's death. This paper reports descriptive results from 3,630 survey respondents: 464 participants in a pancreatic cancer biobank, 1,439 family registry participants, and 1,727 healthy individuals. Our findings indicate that most participants would feel obligated to share their results with blood relatives while alive and would want results to be shared with relatives after their death.

William O. Stephens is to be applauded for the way in which he presents and analyzes some paradigmatic Stoic arguments, and thus defends Stoicism from the misplaced charges of Jim Cheney. Nonetheless, Stephens’ individualist interpretation of what he calls Stoic “logocentrism” obscures key features of the Stoics’ theory of value and their related ethic and metaphysic. Once the Stoics are allowedto speak for themselves, it emerges that they adhered to a holistic axiology, that for them virtue lay in conformity with (...) cosmic nature, and that the standard charges of anthropocentrism and blindness to natural beauty, often wielded by environmental philosophers against them, are misguided. Gene editing techniques, such as CRISPR, are being heralded as powerful new tools for delivering agricultural products and foods with a variety of beneficial traits quickly, easily, and cheaply. Proponents are concerned, however, about whether the public will accept the new technology and that excessive regulatory oversight could limit the technology’s potential. In this paper, we draw on the sociotechnical imaginaries literature to examine how proponents are imagining the potential benefits and risks of gene editing technologies within agriculture. We derive (...) our data from a content analysis of public comments submitted to the Food and Drug Administration’s 2017 docket titled “Genome Editing in New Plant Varieties Used for Food.” Our sample frame consists of 26 comments representing 30 agriculture and biotech companies, organizations, and trade associations. Our findings reveal three key sociotechnical imaginaries, including that gene editing technologies in agriculture: are not GMO but instead equivalent to traditional plant breeding; have the potential to usher in a new Green Revolution; and could facilitate the democratization of agricultural biotechnologies. We argue that forming and projecting these collective interpretations of the potential of gene editing technologies for crops and foods plays an important role in efforts by proponents to influence regulatory oversight, modes of governance, and build public acceptance. This research contributes to calls by science and technology studies scholars to investigate emergent concerns and imaginaries for novel technoscientific advances to help inform upstream models of public engagement and governance decisions. Con un profundo conocimiento del tiempo que le tocó vivir, siempre estuvo pendiente de los problemas del mundo para expresar su opinión e indicar líneas acción para un futuro lleno de esperanza. En el primer apartado recorreremos su biografía para reconocer los aspectos más significativos de su compromiso social. This book takes on current perspectives on transnationalism and children's relationships to media, childhood, and markets in converging global worlds. It introduces the idea of multi-sited imaginaries to explain how children's media and literacy performances shape and are shaped by shared visions of communities that we collectively imagine, including play, media, gender, family, school, or cultural worlds. It draws upon elements of ethnographies of globalization to examine the convergences of such imaginaries across multiple sites: early childhood and elementary classrooms and (...) communities in Puerto Rico and the Midwest United States. The analysis situates children's literacy and play practices in the intersections of local/global, rural/urban, Spanish/English/multilingual, and Latino multinational media/US multinational media, revealing how children use drama and pretense to relocate, take up, contest, and consume global media and consumer identities. Se realizó un estudio de intervención con el objetivo de elaborar una estrategia educativa para incrementar conocimientos sobre sexualidad sana en un grupo de adolescentes de la escuela Secundaria Básica Alfredo Gómez del Municipio Camagüey entre octubre de 2012 y febrero de 2013. La muestra fue de 37 estudiantes. Se aplicó una encuesta que se convirtió en el registro primario de datos, confeccionada según criterios de expertos y la bibliografía. Una vez analizados los resultados se procedió a diseñar la estrategia (...) educativa y posteriormente a su evaluación. Los datos se procesaron de forma automatizada. Antes de aplicar la estrategia educativa se comprobó que los adolescentes no tenían un adecuado conocimiento sobre la sexualidad sana. Los resultados demuestran la importancia de los estudios de intervención. An interventional study was developed with the objective of designing an educational strategy to increase the knowledge about healthy sexuality in a group of teenagers from Alfredo Gómez Secondary School in Camagüey municipality between October 2012 and February 2013. The sample included 37 students. The applied survey became the primary data register. It was designed according to the experts´ criteria and the bibliography. Once the results were analyzed the educative strategy was designed and evaluated. The data was computerized. Before applying the educative strategy it was evident that the students did not have an appropriate knowledge about healthy sexuality. The results show the importance of interventional studies.
