This paper’s outline is as follows. In sections 1-3 I give an exposi¬tion of the Mind-Body Problem, with emphasis on what I believe to be the heart of the problem, namely, the Percepts-Qualia Nonidentity and its incompatibility with the Physical Closure Paradigm. In 4 I present the “Qualia Inaction Postulate” underlying all non-interactionist theo¬ries that seek to resolve the above problem. Against this convenient postulate I propose in section 5 the “Bafflement Ar¬gument,” which is this paper's main thesis. Sections 6-11 (...) critically dis¬cuss attempts to dismiss the Bafflement Argument by the “Baf¬flement=Mis¬perception Equation.” Section 12 offers a refutation of all such attempts in the form of a concise “Asymmetry Proof.” Section 13 points out the bearing of the Bafflement Argument on the evolutionary role of consciousness while section 14 acknowledges the price that has to be paid for it in terms of basic physical principles. The current problems of rural people and communities expose the weakness of the social sciences in agriculture, both as to epistemological limitations and as to the environment in which they operate. That weakness involves not ony an inability to make reasonably accurate predictions, but also to explain scientifically the nature of the current situation. This conclusion is reached after an examination of the context of the current problems of rural America, an evaluation of the epistemological capabilities of the relevant social (...) sciences, and an appraisal of the environment in which the social sciences within agriculture exist. An over-allocation of resources to the economics of commercial agriculture and an under-allocation to the other social sciences and the economics of rural development is suggested as a serious problem. Significant reallocation of resources will be required if the traditional agricultural establishment is to remain relevant to rural people and their needs. (shrink)

Pierwszy to wzgląd o charakterze rocznicowym. Mijająca w tym roku 120 rocznica urodzin i 40 rocznica śmierci Elzenberga jest właściwą chwilą stwarzającą najlepszą sposobność uczczenia pamięci wybitnego polskiego filozofa i humanisty, przywołania i podkreślenia jego dokonań w zakresie filozofii, aksjologii, etyki, estetyki, filozofii kultury i literatury. Drugi - jeśli tak rzec można - ma (...) charakter lokalny. Wiele lat dojrzałego życia i znaczna część biografii twórczej Elzenberga przypada na toruński okres jego działalności. Obok Tadeusza Czeżowskiego tworzył w Uniwersytecie Mikołaja Kopernika środowisko filozoficzne, w wydatnym stopniu kształtując jego oblicze duchowe i intelektualną kulturę. Wykłady i seminaria prowadzone w murach uczelni oraz tzw. privatissima odbywające się w domu Profesora cieszyły się niesłabnącym powodzeniem nie tylko u adeptów filozofii, ale także osób różnych zainteresowań i profesji naukowych. Mogli oni podziwiać rozległość wykształcenia i zainteresowań Profesora, jego niezwykle bogatą osobowość i finezyjną kulturę intelektualną. Szacunek budziła dociekliwość badawcza filozofa głęboko penetrująca podejmowane tematy, a szczególnie umiejętność pobudzania do twórczego myślenia i wspólnego dochodzenia do prawdy. Toruński okres w życiu Elzenberga był także - jak można to chyba bez przesady powiedzieć - zwieńczeniem drogi jego intelektualnego rozwoju i aktywności twórczej. Wszystko to stawia przed kolejnym pokoleniem filozofów związanych z toruńską uczelnią zaszczytne zobowiązania i powinności wobec osoby i dorobku Profesora. Trzeci powód jest bardziej ogólnej natury.Dzieło filozofa niewątpliwie należy do najznakomitszych osiągnięć polskiej humanistyki i powinno, naszym zdaniem, znaleźć bardziej poczesne miejsce w świadomości ludzi wykształconych, wyraźniej zaistnieć w rodzimym życiu intelektualnym. Mimo wzrastającego zainteresowania twórczością Elzenberga, istnieje w dalszym ciągu dysproporcja pomiędzy znaczeniem jego dokonań na polu aksjologii,etyki filozofii kultury, krytyki literackiej i literatury a miejscem,jakie zajmuje ona w pamięci i świadomości zbiorowej. Dlatego należy podejmować takie inicjatywy, aby najbardziej wartościowe tradycje rodzimej kultury intelektualnej nie stawały się jedynie pomnikami przeszłości, ale stanowiły przede wszystkim żywy składnik współczesnej kultury Dotychczasowe spotkania konferencyjne charakteryzowała wieloaspektowość podejścia do spuścizny filozofa. Jej badacze, dzieląc się wynikami swoich dociekań,przedstawili dowolnie wybrane tematy, koncentrując się na ich opisywaniu, wyjaśnianiu czy interpretowaniu. Wybór tematyki uzależniony był od kierunku zainteresowań i predylekcji badacza.Zaprezentowano mniej lub bardziej bogaty zestaw problemów odnoszących się do różnych aspektów myśli twórczej filozofa.Otrzymywaliśmy w efekcie analizy wybranych zagadnień z bardzo bogatego obszaru zainteresowań filozofa, począwszy od teorii wartości poprzez tematy etyczne, estetyczne, historyczno filozoficzne, aż po te z zakresu filozofii kultury, literatury, krytyki literackiej, religii i mistyki. Podejmowano także wiele innych bardziej szczegółowych i drobniejszych kwestii odnajdywanych w pismach filozofa, a zwłaszcza tych inspirowanych, imponującą bogactwem tematycznym, refleksją zobiektywizowaną na kartach Kłopotu z istnieniem.Przykładem takie wieloaspektowego odniesienia się do myśli twórczej autora Kłopotu z istnieniem była konferencja zorganizowana przez toruńskie środowisko filozoficzne w 1997 roku pod tytułem Henryk Elzenberg. Dziedzictwo idei. Filozofia - aksjologia - kultura.Tytuł bez wątpienia sugeruje, że intencją organizatorów było zakreślenie w miarę pełnej panoramy zagadnień podejmowanych przez filozofa wraz z ich analizą. (shrink)

Bu çalışma Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kıbrıs Adası’nı fethi ile özgürlüğünü yeniden kazanmış olan Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi’nin, İngiliz idaresi döneminde yaşamış olduğu iki siyasi kilise krizini konu etmektedir. İngilizlerin Kıbrıs’ta idaresi iki döneme ayrılmaktadır. Birincisi 1878 yılında Osmanlı Devleti ile yapılan iki maddelik antlaşma kapsamında 1914 yılına kadar devam eden ve adanın fiilen Osmanlı toprağı olarak kabul edildiği dönem; ikincisi ise 1914 yılında İngiltere’nin adayı tek taraflı ilhakından 1960 yılında Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’nin kurulmasına kadar olan dönemdir. İngiliz idaresi döneminde gerçekleşmiş olan kilise (...) krizlerinin ilki 1900-1910 yılları arasında Kitium Piskoposu Kyrillos Papadopoulos ile Girne Piskoposu Kyrillos Basileiou arasında gerçekleşmiştir. İkincisi ise 1933-1947 yılları arasında Baf Metropoliti Leontios Leontiou’nun 1931 isyanları sebebiyle ada dışında sürgünde olan metropolitlerin adaya dönmeden seçim yapılamayacağını beyan etmesi sebebiyle gerçekleşmiştir. Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi otosefal bir kilise olması sebebiyle iç işlerine diğer kiliseleri karıştırmak istememiş, ancak çıkmaza giren piskoposluk seçimi nedeniyle müdahale kaçınılmaz olmuştur. Bugüne kadar siyasetteki etkisi var olagelen Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi, 20. Yüzyılın henüz başında geçirmiş olduğu kilise krizlerini ancak siyasetin etkisi ve yardımıyla aşabilmiştir. Kıbrıs’ta ilk Yunan bayrağı birinci kilise krizi döneminde bir taraftar toplama çalışması olarak II. Kyrillos (Kyrillos Papadopoulos) tarafından Trooditissa Manastırı’na çekilmiştir. Ancak Kıbrıs Adası’nın ne daha önceki dönemlerde ne de şimdi Yunanistan ile hiçbir bağı yoktur. Kıbrıs Adası’nda yaşayan Rumlar ile Yunanistan arasında bir bağ oluşturmaya çalışan ve bunu iddia eden de yine kilisedir. Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti birinci Cumhurbaşkanı III. Makarios’un başpiskopos seçilmesine giden süreçte bahsedilen iki kilise krizi büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu dönemde başpiskopos adayları arasında, rakip adaya karşı Enosis’i ateşli bir şekilde savunmamak, İngiliz idaresine fazla yakın olmak gibi suçlamalar olmuştur. III. Makarios hem ateşli bir şekilde Enosis’i savunmuş, hem de İngiliz idaresi ile her zaman çatışma halinde olmuştur. Bu süreç ona önce başpiskoposluk, sonrasında ise Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti Cumhurbaşkanlığı getirmiştir. Kıbrıs’ta zikri geçen dönemde özellikle ön plana çıkan Türk düşmanlığı, başpiskopos olmanın ilk şartı sayılmıştır. Şöyleki; İngilizler adayı tek taraflı ilhak ettikten sonra İngilizlerin adayı kendilerine bırakacağına neredeyse emin olan Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi başpiskoposları, önce İngiliz idaresi düşmanlığı, sonra Türk düşmanlığı üzerinden kilise propagandası yapmışlardır. Çalışmada otosefal bir kilise olan Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi’nin, kilise içi anlaşmazlıklardaki tavrı ile kilise kurallarına bağlılığı da ele alınmaktadır. Enosis düşüncesinin piskoposluk seçimine etkisinin daha net görüleceği bu iki kriz, kilisenin bugününü anlamak açısından oldukça önemlidir. (shrink)

The Battle of Drepana in 249 b.c. marks the most significant defeat of Roman naval forces at the hands of their Carthaginian opponents during the First Punic War. Attempting to take the Punic fleet in the harbour of Drepana by surprise, the consul P. Claudius Pulcher sailed with his ships from Lilybaeum about midnight, and reached Drepana at dawn. Yet, owing to swift and level-headed counter-measures taken by the Punic commander, Adherbal, the unfolding fight – partly in the harbour, mostly (...) off the shore – turned into a fiasco for the Romans. The consul got away; he returned to Rome, where the Senate instructed him to appoint a dictator. How soon he returned, and by what route, is the question. (shrink)

A critical and detailed introduction to Kant's philosophy, with particular reference to the Critique of Pure Reason. Since Broad's death there have been many publications on Kant but Broad's 1978 book still finds a definite place between the very general surveys and the more specialised commentaries. He offers a characteristically clear, judicious and direct account of Kant's work; his criticisms are acute and sympathetic, reminding us forcefully that 'Kant's mistakes are usually more important than other people's correctitudes'. C.D. Broad was (...) Knightsbridge Professor of Moral Philosophy at Cambridge from 1933 to 1953, and this book is based on his undergraduate lectures on Kant. Broad died in 1971 and Dr Lewy has since edited the book for publication. (shrink)

This essay argues that retrieving insights from the ancient Stoic philosophers for Christian ethics is much more difficult than is often assumed and, further, that the "ethics of retrieval" is itself something worth prolonged reflection. The central problem is that in their ancient sense both Christianity and Stoicism are practically dense patterns of reasoning and mutually incompatible forms of life. Coming to see this clearly requires the realization that the encounter between Stoicism and Christianity is a conflict of lived traditions. (...) Precisely because we cannot simply extract Stoic insights from the lives in which they belong, the task of determining how Stoicism is useful for Christianity is exceptionally challenging. Indeed, doing justice to the Stoics has more to do with facing an alternative to Christianity than it does with appropriating insights for our own use. These points are developed in conversation with Elizabeth Agnew Cochran's recent article on the Stoic influence upon Jonathan Edwards. This essay is a response to C. Kavin Rowe's critique of my 2011 argument that certain dimensions of Roman Stoic ethics are at work in Jonathan Edwards's moral thought. Rowe raises questions about the act of selectively retrieving ideas from a philosophical tradition to support constructive work in another tradition. I argue for the importance of acknowledging how Christian thought has been shaped by what Jeffrey Stout describes as moral bricolage, the selective retrieval of ideas from various traditions, and I contend that this bricolage can continue to be a fruitful means through which Christian ethics engages external traditions. Moreover, the importance of Stoicism's retrieval in early modern philosophy makes the work of eighteenth-century theologians such as Edwards a particularly valuable resource for exploring the plausibility of Christian engagement with the Stoics. A coordinate-free formulation is established for (semi) classical particle-field interactions. The exterior language of spacetime chains and De-Rham currents enables the description to include extended strings and membranes besides point particles. Treating physical fields in terms of sections of particular bundles, a unified account of interactions is presented in terms of an intrinsic action principle on a bundle of jets over spacetime. The theory is illustrated by considering the specific model of point particles with intrinsic spin covariantly coupled to theU(1) (...) andSL(2, C) connections describing the electromagnetic and gravitational fields, respectively. The notion of dual spin is examined in this context and coupled equations for this particle-field system are explicitly derived in a local chart. There is a long tradition in the philosophy of the social sciences that emphasizes the meaningfulness of human action. This tradition doubts or even negates the possibility of causal explanations of human action precisely on the basis that human actions have meaning. This paper provides an argument in favour of methodological naturalism in the social sciences. It grants the main argument of the Interpretivists, i.e. that human actions are meaningful, but it shows how a transformation of a “nexus of meaning” (...) into a “causal nexus” can take place, proposing the “successful transformation argument”. Based on previous work presented in my Naturalistic Hermeneutics, Cambridge University Press, 2005 the paper discusses four approaches that describe the “nexus of meaning” connected with a human action based on the motives, the intentions, the reasons, and the rationality of the action respectively. From the standpoint of eachapproach a causal nexus can arise, namely, if the respective motives, intentions, reasons, or the human rationality that are manifest in the different nexuses of meaning exhibit certain invariances. These approaches can be formulated as theories, which explain human action every time that the nexuses of meaning – described with the diverse conceptual apparatuses – can be transformed into causal nexuses. It is shown that explanations based on motives, intentions, reasons, or rationality are possible, as are explanations of human action based on, at least in principle, an unlimited number of other theories. Recent interest in ethical pluralism derives from Isaiah Berlin's reflections on the writings of Vico and Herder and their opposition to the views of the Enlightenment. I begin with two quotations from Berlin: It is not relativism. Members of one culture can, by the force of imaginative insight, understand … the values, the ideals, the forms of life of another culture or society, even those remote in time or space. They may find these values unacceptable, but if they open their (...) minds sufficiently they can grasp how one might be a full human being, with whom one could communicate, and at the same time live in the light of values widely different from one's own, but which nevertheless one can see to be values, ends of life, by the realisation of which men could be fulfilled.
