Un carottage effectué dans le marais de Malia a permis de reconstituer les grandes étapes de l'évolution de l'environnement du site archéologique entre 6500 av. J.-C. et aujourd'hui. L'étude ne prend en compte, pour l'instant, que les données sédimentaires et des datations au carbone 14. Plusieurs séquences ont été identifiées. La première (6400-4700 av. J.-C.) correspond au remplissage de la dépression, la deuxième (4700-1500 av. J.-C.) voit se former et évoluer le marais lui-même, la troisième (non datée) révèle (...) un événement marin bref, la quatrième (190 av. J.-C.-414 ap. J.-C.) traduit la réinstallation brutale du marais, la cinquième (de 414 ap. J.-C. à nos jours) montre que la surface du marais évolue en fonction du tracé plus ou moins interne du cordon littoral. Il se peut que la séquence 3 corresponde au tsunami engendré par l'explosion du volcan de Santorin mais il est également possible qu'il corresponde au tremblement de terre de 365 ap. J.-C. qui a provoqué un mouvement de bascule important de la Crète, le coin Sud-Ouest se soulevant de 8 à 10 m, le secteur Nord-oriental s'enfonçant simultanément. (shrink)

A Semiotic Theory of Translation, de Kobus Marais, 2019, é o mais importante livro publicado sobre a relação entre os Estudos da Tradução e a Semiótica pragmatista de C.S.Peirce, desde Semio-translation, de Dinda Gorlée, de 2004. Pode-se afirmar que a obra de Gorlée representou uma etapa inicial de ajustes na agenda dos Estudos de Tradução, inspirada na filosofia de Peirce. É um trabalho preliminar, cujo maior mérito foi estabelecer uma vinculação mais sistêmica entre as “áreas”. O livro de Kobus (...) Marais é a mais audaciosa tentativa de desenvolver este projeto. Ele explora diversas consequências da aplicação de muitas entidades e termos teóricos da filosofia de Peirce, especialmente em sua fase madura. Ao fazer isso, Marais abre uma frente inédita de investigação cuja importância não deve ser subestimada. Ele associa muitos aparatos, que incluem rudimentos de uma filosofia de processo de inspiração pragmatista, com forte propensão pluralista; classificações sígnicas desenvolvidas por Peirce, após 1903, período que se estabeleceu como “teoria madura do signo”, inexplorada nos estudos sobre tradução, e ainda pouco explorada pelo próprio scholarship Peirceano; e uma versão emergentista associada a um tratamento baseado na teoria de sistemas complexos. Sobre este último tópico, especialmente influenciado por Terrence Deacon e Floyd Merrell, Marais extrai muitas implicações, relacionadas a uma definição de tradução como negentropia, em sistemas complexos, e generaliza o fenômeno para casos de emergência de fenômenos sócio-culturais. Dividi esta resenha em asserções. Elas se referem às teses que considero mais importantes do livro de Kobus Marais. Embora outras tantas possam ser formuladas, considero aquelas que podem ter maiores implicações. (shrink)

Dominik Tatarka, Slovak (Czechoslovak) writer, philosopher, social and political thinker. His literary and philosophical works are firmly linked with his personal experience, combined with socio-political events in Czechoslovakia. They are based on several principles of which the most important is respect for democratic principles and the rule of Christian universalism, which returned in the end of the 70th last century. The article is focused on the modification of the key problems of Slovak author: the freedom of the individual and the (...) freedom of the community. Tatarka in his texts and also in his life always tried to understand an individual, not judging him. That was his moral strength and reason behind the superiority over many opponents. When comparing his views with the ideas of other authors (M. Bátorová, M. Hamada, Vaclav Havel, C. Miłosz, S. Marais...), this article will highlights the uniqueness of texts, as well as the importance of the interpretation of the concept of freedom in the context of Central Europe marked by two totalitarian ideologies. Amanda Kelly À la recherche d'un bain romain dans la région de Malia p. 607-627 On aborde ici l'importance de l'activité romaine dans la région de Malia et on examine l'éventualité de la présence d'un bain romain (public ou privé, mais plus vraisemblablement privé) dans la zone du marais. L'identification de trois clous d'espacement en terre cuite et de plusieurs fragments de pilae recueillis lors de la prospection de Malia, près de la basilique, suggère l'existence d'un bain romain dans (...) les environs, quelque part dans le marais (probablement dans la région de la basilique). La présence de clous d'espacement en terre cuite dans l'arrière-pays maliote est révélatrice, puisque leur usage est presque exclusivement associé à des bains romains, ailleurs dans l'Orient romain (généralement datés des IIe et IIIe siècles apr. La musique comme chemin d'existence et pour la penser... En effet, les moments d'intervention de la musique, de toutes les musiques, au fil des jours et au long de la vie ne manquent pas d'être signifiants. Ils instruisent autant sur la musique elle-même que sur la pensée et sur l'existence. Il serait prétentieux d'en produire une théorie générale. Toutefois, la voie de la chronique, jour après jour, aura tissé des fils permettant de s'attarder sur le sens, nécessairement ponctuel et subjectif (...) (chacun pourra substituer son écoute et ses pratiques propres), de l'Adieu en musique, des affinités qu'elle manifeste et peut-être révèle, de ses rapports avec telle image ou peinture, plus étonnamment avec la photographie, avec le son en général, la vérité ou encore le style. On verra aussi comment la musique s'entend dans le rêve et comment elle nous porte à considérer les animaux. Des oeuvres, des musiciens, et quelques philosophes et écrivains s'imposeront (Le Voyage d'Hiver, Le Boléro, Le Sacre du Printemps, Pelléas ; Haydn, Schubert, Mahler, Chostakovitch ; Descartes, Nietzsche, Adorno ; Goethe, Gerhard Meier, Sandor Maraï...). C'est pourtant davantage une vie dans la musique et par elle que la théorisation sur la musique qui inspire chacun des textes présentés ici. En s'efforçant de relever et de piquer leur objet, donc en le séparant et le thématisant staccato, peut-être la chance sera-t-elle donnée d'entrevoir l'existence dans sa continuité, legato. (shrink)

Pourquoi les mots « structures » et « structuralisme », qui sont vieux comme le monde, ont-ils soudain paru surgir du néant? Expliquer une mode, ce n’est pas rejeter ce phénomène dans les marais d’un devenir informe et inepte, c’est d’abord mettre en lumière l’aspect nouveau, insolite pour le profane, d’une manière de voir ; puis c’est chercher pourquoi cet insolite-là a plu de préférence à d’autres ; c’est enfin présenter, en une fresque qui en dessine les grandes lignes, (...) la pensée des auteurs que l’on appelle structuralistes. Le « structuralisme » est-il une nouvelle vision de l’homme et du monde? Permet-il encore de parler de « l’homme », ou bien le remplace-t-il par autre chose, par des « structures inhumaines »? Les auteurs ont voulu préciser ces questions, et parfois y répondre, en exposant ce qui leur paraît essentiel dans l’état présent des sciences humaines (linguistique, ethnologie, idéologie politique, psychanalyse, psychologie sociale et philosophie). La réception tardive de l'oeuvre de Ernst Troeltsch en France nous a privés d'une analyse du christianisme originale et féconde. Elle nuance et enrichit ce que nous savons, au travers de la réflexion wébérienne notamment, des relations de la religion chrétienne à la modernité. Contre les interprétations usuelles qui datent l'émergence de cette dernière de la Renaissance et de la Réforme, Troeltsch insiste sur la centralité des Lumières comme marquant la fin de la civilisation ecclésiastique ; c'es l'évanouissement de la (...) référence structurante à l'ordre divin qui inau­gure selon lui l'entrée dans le monde moderne. Sur la base de ce constat, il s'agit pour Troeltsch de trouver une définition du christianisme qui soit en adéquation avec les conditions de l'existence moderne. Dans son ouvrage datant de 1912, « Les doctrines sociales des Églises et groupes chrétiens », il examine les types « Église », « secte » et « mystique » pré­sents depuis les origines évangéliques, circonscrivant trois modes socio­logiques et éthiques qu'il confronte à la modernité. Aucun n'est seul adéquat. Pour durer, le christianisme devra, selon Troeltsch, renoncer à la réalisation d'un programme éthique d'essence religieuse au sein du monde et accepter le cantonnement de la foi dans l'intimité des cons­ciences, tout en s'articulant à des réalités socio-culturelles à l'échelle de tous dont les formes et les transformations internes sont toujours à repenser.The delayed reception of the work of Ernst Troeltsch in France deprived us of an analysis of an original and fertile Christianity. It nuances and enriches what we know, especially through a Weberian reflection, about the relations of the Christian religion and modernity. Against the customary interpretations that date the emergence of the latter from the Renaissance and the Reformation, Troeltsch insists on the centrality of the Enlightenment as marking the end of an ecclesiastical civilization. It is the disappearance of the structuring reference to the divine order that inaugurated, according to him, the entrance to the modern world. On the basis of this observation, Troeltsch is interested in finding a definition of Christianity that would be in harmony with the conditions of modern existence. In his work dating from 1912, "The social doctrines of the Churches and Christian groups ", he examines the categories "Church", "sect", and "mystic" that were present evangelical times, circumscribing three sociological and ethical modes, which he confronts with modernity. No single one is adequate. In order to endure, Christian­ity should, according to Troeltsch, renounce the attempt to set up an ethical program of a religious essence in the heart of the world and accept the establishment of a faith in the intimacy of consciences, all the while adapting its« to socia-cultural realities applicable to everyone, of which the forms and internal transformations are always to be re-thought. Stiff Person Syndrome is a rare autoimmune disorder associated with antibodies against glutamic acid decarboxylase, the key enzyme in γ -aminobutyric acid synthesis. In order to investigate the role of cerebral benzodiazepinereceptor binding in SPS, we performed [ 11 C]flumazenil positron emission tomography in a female patient with SPS compared to nine healthy controls. FMZ is a radioligand to the postsynaptic central benzodiazepine receptor which is co-localized with the GABA-A receptor. In the SPS patient, we found a global reduction of (...) cortical FMZ binding. In addition, distinct local clusters of reduced radiotracer binding were observed. These data provide first in vivo evidence for a reduced postsynaptic GABA-A receptor availability which may reflect the loss of GABAergic neuronal inhibition in SPS. (shrink)

When von Neumann's and Morgenstern's Theory of Games and Economic Behavior appeared in 1944, one thought that a complete theory of strategic social behavior had appeared out of nowhere. However, game theory has, to this very day, remained a fast-growing assemblage of models which have gradually been united in a new social theory - a theory that is far from being completed even after recent advances in game theory, as evidenced by the work of the three Nobel Prize winners, John (...) F. Nash, John C. Harsanyi, and Reinhard Selten. Two of them, Harsanyi and Selten, have contributed important articles to the present volume. This book leaves no doubt that the game-theoretical models are on the right track to becoming a respectable new theory, just like the great theories of the twentieth century originated from formerly separate models which merged in the course of decades. For social scientists, the age of great discover ies is not over. The recent advances of today's game theory surpass by far the results of traditional game theory. For example, modem game theory has a new empirical and social foundation, namely, societal experiences; this has changed its methods, its "rationality. " Morgenstern (I worked together with him for four years) dreamed of an encompassing theory of social behavior. With the inclusion of the concept of evolution in mathematical form, this dream will become true. Perhaps the new foundation will even lead to a new name, "conflict theory" instead of "game theory. It is generally believed that Polybios mistook L. Iunius Pullus (cos. 249) for one of the consuls of 248 B. C. The internal evidence of Polybios’ narrative shows clearly that he knew the correct year of Iunius’ consulship, and inadvertently created a false impression of the date by structuring his account so as to tell the story of the Roman siege of Lilybaeum without interruption, from its inception in 250 to Claudius Pulcher’s defeat at Drepana in the following year. This (...) narrative objective led him to postpone the paragraph (1.52.4-5) detailing the Roman reaction to the disastrous siege operations of 250 and the consular elections for 249 until after his account of Drepana, without considering how such an arrangement could mislead readers two millenia hence. Upshot: The three commentaries focus on the c-book as “object,” on locating the learner in the design process and on the challenge to develop more fine-grained theory for constructionist collaborative design of educational resources. I respond to this delightfully critical discussion in three ways, addressing the c-book as a potentially new kind of mediation, thinking of constructionist collaborative designs as creativity enhancers and considering constructionism as one of the key frameworks for understanding collective designs.

In Process and Reality Professor A. N. Whitehead formulates a Cosmology which embodies a resolute attempt to combine in one philosophical synthesis a scientific account of Concrescence with a metaphysical explanation thereof in terms of Creativity.

It is argued that a concept of substance is possible which not only avoids metaphysical blind alleys but is worthy of serious philosophical attention. Starting with parker's notion of substance a conception is developed in which substance has the moments of haecceity, Logical independence, Causal independence, Causal efficacy, And conservation through change. Event and substance ontologies are compared and reasons for the superiority of the latter given.
