Luhmann und die formale mathematik.Boris Hennig - 2000 - In Peter-Ulrich Merz-Benz & Gerhard Wagner (eds.), Die Logik Der Systeme.

    Boris Pasternak's Conception of Realism.John Edward MacKinnon - 1988 - Philosophy and Literature 12 (2):211-231.
In lieu of an abstract, here is a brief excerpt of the content:John Edward MacKinnon BORIS PASTERNAK'S CONCEPTION OF REALISM To desire truth is to desire direct contact with a piece of reality. To desire contact with a piece of reality is to love. —Simone Weil, The Needfor Roots According to czeslaw milosz, Boris Pasternak "did not pluck fruits from the tree of reason, the tree of life was enough for him. Confronted by argument, he replied with (...)

Saints, Scandals, and the Politics of Love: Simone Weil, Ingrid Bergman, Roberto Rossellini.Lisabeth During - 2016 - Substance 45 (3):16-32.
Now the problem is this. Have we found a positive foundation, instead of self-sacrifice, for the hermeneutics of the self? I cannot say this, no. We have tried, at least from the humanistic period of the Renaissance till now. And we can’t find it.The reputation of political thinkers is a tricky thing. Sometimes your strongest supporters are your worst nightmare. At other moments, your best friends can see you more clearly than is strictly comfortable. The French militant, philosopher, and mystic (...)

Vorlesung über Naturphilosophie Berlin 1821/22.Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel - 2002 - New York: P. Lang. Edited by Boris von Uexküll, Gilles Marmasse & Thomas Posch.

The Vital Lǐ 禮 in Play: Exploring the Confucian Self in Japanese Aesthetics.Yi Chen & Boris Steipe - 2022 - Journal of Japanese Philosophy 8 (1):97-128.
Confucian state doctrines have shaped Asian cultures for millennia as prescriptive codes of conduct with an emphasis on hierarchy and obligation. Yet a premise at the core of lǐ —understood as propriety, ritual, or generally a cultural grammar—is authenticity, and authentic respect cannot be commanded. What if the lǐ were to be elegant instead? Hans-Georg Gadamer analyzed play as a fusion of horizons that are absorbed into the same event, co-constituting subject and object in an aesthetic experience, and dissolving their (...)

  10. Making sense of scientists’ responsibilities at the interface of science and society: Commentary on “six domains of research ethics”.Vivian Weil - 2002 - Science and Engineering Ethics 8 (2):223-227.
As Kenneth Pimple points out, scientists’ responsibilities to the larger society have received less attention than ethical issues internal to the practice of science. Yet scientists and specialists who study science have begun to provide analyses of the foundations and scope of scientsts’ responsibilities to society. An account of contributions from Kristen Shrader-Frechette, Melanie Leitner, Ullica Segerstråle, John Ahearne, Helen Longino, and Carl Cranor offers work on scientists’ social responsibilities upon which to build.

    Trans*versal animacies and the mattering of Black trans* political life.Abraham Weil - 2017 - Angelaki 22 (2):191-202.
This article explores trans*versal connections between transness, blackness, and the animal. Drawn from the conceptual vocabulary of cultural theorist Félix Guattari, this article argues that the central purpose of transversality is to create linkages between previously unexplored singularities in a field, and then to create connections in other conceptual topographies at different levels of discursivity. The article advances an extension of Guattari’s “transversal” into a more capacious concept of the “trans*versal,” to analyze the #blacklivesmatter and #blacktranslivematter movements that draw on (...)

The Penalties for the Violation of Separation: A Comparison between the United States and France.Patrick Weil - 2024 - Law and Ethics of Human Rights 18 (1):1-20.
How do the United States and France guarantee that their proclamations of non-establishment and separation are respected? These two countries employ different types of tools to preserve and protect separation, directly rooted in the contexts from which they differently emerged – the writing of the Constitution in the U.S. and the 1905 law of separation in France: fiscal or financial in the United States, penal in France. This article analyses in detail how these various tools have emerged and developed throughout (...)

Standards for evaluating proposals to develop ethics curricula.Vivian Weil - 2005 - Science and Engineering Ethics 11 (3):501-507.
A focus on standards for assessing proposals for online teaching of practical and professional ethics provides an approach to standards for raising the level of online teaching. Intellectual merit, broad impact, and integration of research and teaching featuring a high level of interactivity are key criteria for evaluation. Especially noted is research that can serve to prepare instructors, to enrich the content of courses, and to stimulate further research. Yet raising the level of online teaching hinges on developing easy access (...)

Whole chromosome aneuploidy: Big mutations drive adaptation by phenotypic leap.Guangbo Chen, Boris Rubinstein & Rong Li - 2012 - Bioessays 34 (10):893-900.
Despite its widespread existence, the adaptive role of aneuploidy (the abnormal state of having an unequal number of different chromosomes) has been a subject of debate. Cellular aneuploidy has been associated with enhanced resistance to stress, whereas on the organismal level it is detrimental to multicellular species. Certain aneuploid karyotypes are deleterious for specific environments, but karyotype diversity in a population potentiates adaptive evolution. To reconcile these paradoxical observations, this review distinguishes the role of aneuploidy in cellular versus organismal evolution. (...)

Debates over health care reform often focus on the appropriate role for the government in health care. Much less attention is paid to defining the respective roles of the states and the federal government. Yet, in the American political system, the basic issue of federalism has profound implications. The question for the nation is which aspects of health policy should reflect national, uniform standards, and which should vary according to local conditions, values, and preferences. Economic mobility and the desire for efficiency (...)
