Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) and games set a new domain in understanding people’s motivations in gaming, behavioral implications of game play, game adaptation to player preferences and needs for increased engaging experiences in the context of HCI serious games (HCI-SGs). When the latter relate with people’s health status, they can become a part of their daily life as assistive health status monitoring/enhancement systems. Co-designing HCI-SGs can be seen as a combination of art and science that involves a meticulous collaborative process. The (...) design elements in assistive HCI-SGs for Parkinson’s Disease (PD) patients, in particular, are explored in the present work. Within this context, the Game-Based Learning (GBL) design framework is adopted here and its main game-design parameters are explored for the Exergames, Dietarygames, Emotional games, Handwriting games, and Voice games design, drawn from the PD-related i-PROGNOSIS Personalized Game Suite (PGS) (www.i-prognosis.eu) holistic approach. Two main data sources were involved in the study. In particular, the first one includes qualitative data from semi-structured interviews, involving 10 PD patients and four clinicians in the co-creation process of the game design, whereas the second one relates with data from an online questionnaire addressed by 104 participants spanning the whole related spectrum, i.e., PD patients, physicians, software/game developers. Linear regression analysis was employed to identify an adapted GBL framework with the most significant game-design parameters, which efficiently predict the transferability of the PGS beneficial effect to real-life, addressing functional PD symptoms. The findings of this work can assist HCI-SG designers for designing PD-related HCI-SGs, as the most significant game-design factors were identified, in terms of adding value to the role of HCI-SGs in increasing PD patients’ quality of life, optimizing the interaction with personalized HCI-SGs and, hence, fostering a collaborative human-computer symbiosis. Temporal discounting is the tendency to devalue temporally distant rewards. Past studies have examined the k-value, the indifference point, and the area under the curve as dependent measures on this task. The current study included these three measures and a fourth measure, called the interest rate total score. The interest rate total score was based on scoring only those items in which the delayed choice should be preferred given the expected return based on simple interest rates. In addition, associations with (...) several individual difference measures were examined including intelligence, executive functions (inhibition, working memory, and set-shifting), thinking dispositions (Need for Cognition and Consideration of Future Consequences) and engagement in substance use and gambling behavior. A staircase temporal discounting task was examined in a sample of 99 university students. Replicating previous studies, temporal discounting increased with longer delays to reward and decreased with higher reward magnitudes. A hyperbolic function accounted for variance in temporal discounting better than an exponential function. Reaction time at the indifference point was significantly longer than at the other choice points. The four dependent measures of temporal discounting were all significantly correlated and were also significantly associated with our individual difference measures. That is, the tendency to wait for a larger delayed reward on all of the temporal discounting measures was associated with higher intelligence, higher executive functions and more consideration of future consequences. Associations between our measures of temporal discounting and outcomes related to substance use and gambling behavior were modest in our university sample. (shrink)

This is an important book, one that has in its brief life (a paperback edition appeared in 2001) spawned many scholarly debates in both written and spoken form. Many have disagreed—and will (...) disagree—with Habinek's ideas, and I certainly have many questions about his methodology, his use of sources and evidence, and his sometimes conflicting claims. Nonetheless, he takes on one of the most serious issues in Classics: how we read classical texts, what the reader's involvement with the text should be, and what part ideology plays (and did play) in both the formation and the reception of a text.Habinek's task, as he states it, is to study literature as a representation of society and an intervention in it (3). His overall aim is to assess the social function of Latin literature, a literature that was produced within a traditional aristocratic empire "by and for an elite that sought to maintain and expand its dominance over other sectors of the population through reference to an authorizing past" (3). As his title indicates (with "Politics" coming before "Literature"), he sets out to "politicize and historicize the reading of texts of classical Latin literature that are still too frequently regarded in purely formalistic and aesthetic terms" (4-5) by examining, chapter by chapter, a series of test cases or scenarios that embed Roman literature in its social, economic, and cultural context. This book is meant to offer the reader, then, a "historically engaged mode of reading" (5) by looking at intertexts of many sorts.Such an approach to literature belongs to the school of cultural-materialist studies, those critics who read and analyze literature as "ideological discourse and social institution" (5), and it draws from many schools of thought and disciplines, including Marxism, feminist theory, anthropology, political science, deconstruction, literary criticism, New Historicism, and Foucauldian theory. The genesis of Habinek's book was the close philological study of the "meaning and usage of specific Latin words and phrases in specific discursive contexts" (6). Thus he began with a close examination of the political basis of words but then broadened his lens to analyze textual systems and the construction of political identity. Habinek distinguishes himself from the semioticians and the formalists in his focus on the "interestedness" of textual utterances and the historical and political dynamics of the text. The particular kind of interestedness that Habinek zeroes in on is the Roman aristocratic elite and its anxieties about strategies for sustaining a moral and political hegemony.Habinek enters into a fray that has long simmered in the discipline of Classics but that boiled up into a full-scale battle with the publication of Martin Bernal's Black Athena. Habinek contends that Classical scholars' idealizing view of the ancient world (more Greece than Rome) and their isolation of Latin literature from Roman culture has allowed them to ignore "the social implications of their own practice" (10), a comfortable, ahistoricized position that militates [End Page 645] against reading Latin literature in a sociopolitical framework. If, for example, we read Ovid's exile poetry without acknowledging Ovid's contribution to Roman colonialism and his authorly assistance in constructing and disseminating an imperial discourse of domination, we risk imitating some famous scholarly forebears who "avoided the historical reality of Rome in order to actualize their own fantasies of the apolitical innocence of literature and literary studies" (14). Bu çalışma Osmanlı Devleti’nin Kıbrıs Adası’nı fethi ile özgürlüğünü yeniden kazanmış olan Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi’nin, İngiliz idaresi döneminde yaşamış olduğu iki siyasi kilise krizini konu etmektedir. İngilizlerin Kıbrıs’ta idaresi iki döneme ayrılmaktadır. Birincisi 1878 yılında Osmanlı Devleti ile yapılan iki maddelik antlaşma kapsamında 1914 yılına kadar devam eden ve adanın fiilen Osmanlı toprağı olarak kabul edildiği dönem; ikincisi ise 1914 yılında İngiltere’nin adayı tek taraflı ilhakından 1960 yılında Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti’nin kurulmasına kadar olan dönemdir. İngiliz idaresi döneminde gerçekleşmiş olan kilise (...) krizlerinin ilki 1900-1910 yılları arasında Kitium Piskoposu Kyrillos Papadopoulos ile Girne Piskoposu Kyrillos Basileiou arasında gerçekleşmiştir. İkincisi ise 1933-1947 yılları arasında Baf Metropoliti Leontios Leontiou’nun 1931 isyanları sebebiyle ada dışında sürgünde olan metropolitlerin adaya dönmeden seçim yapılamayacağını beyan etmesi sebebiyle gerçekleşmiştir. Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi otosefal bir kilise olması sebebiyle iç işlerine diğer kiliseleri karıştırmak istememiş, ancak çıkmaza giren piskoposluk seçimi nedeniyle müdahale kaçınılmaz olmuştur. Bugüne kadar siyasetteki etkisi var olagelen Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi, 20. Yüzyılın henüz başında geçirmiş olduğu kilise krizlerini ancak siyasetin etkisi ve yardımıyla aşabilmiştir. Kıbrıs’ta ilk Yunan bayrağı birinci kilise krizi döneminde bir taraftar toplama çalışması olarak II. Kyrillos (Kyrillos Papadopoulos) tarafından Trooditissa Manastırı’na çekilmiştir. Ancak Kıbrıs Adası’nın ne daha önceki dönemlerde ne de şimdi Yunanistan ile hiçbir bağı yoktur. Kıbrıs Adası’nda yaşayan Rumlar ile Yunanistan arasında bir bağ oluşturmaya çalışan ve bunu iddia eden de yine kilisedir. Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti birinci Cumhurbaşkanı III. Makarios’un başpiskopos seçilmesine giden süreçte bahsedilen iki kilise krizi büyük önem taşımaktadır. Bu dönemde başpiskopos adayları arasında, rakip adaya karşı Enosis’i ateşli bir şekilde savunmamak, İngiliz idaresine fazla yakın olmak gibi suçlamalar olmuştur. III. Makarios hem ateşli bir şekilde Enosis’i savunmuş, hem de İngiliz idaresi ile her zaman çatışma halinde olmuştur. Bu süreç ona önce başpiskoposluk, sonrasında ise Kıbrıs Cumhuriyeti Cumhurbaşkanlığı getirmiştir. Kıbrıs’ta zikri geçen dönemde özellikle ön plana çıkan Türk düşmanlığı, başpiskopos olmanın ilk şartı sayılmıştır. Şöyleki; İngilizler adayı tek taraflı ilhak ettikten sonra İngilizlerin adayı kendilerine bırakacağına neredeyse emin olan Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi başpiskoposları, önce İngiliz idaresi düşmanlığı, sonra Türk düşmanlığı üzerinden kilise propagandası yapmışlardır. Çalışmada otosefal bir kilise olan Kıbrıs Rum Ortodoks Kilisesi’nin, kilise içi anlaşmazlıklardaki tavrı ile kilise kurallarına bağlılığı da ele alınmaktadır. Enosis düşüncesinin piskoposluk seçimine etkisinin daha net görüleceği bu iki kriz, kilisenin bugününü anlamak açısından oldukça önemlidir. (shrink)

In this paper, I explore the phenomenon of a felt sense of the concrete other. Although the importance of this phenomenon is recognised in the contemporary discussion on intercorporeality, it has not been subjected to systematic phenomenological analysis. I argue that the felt sense of the other is an aspect of intercorporeal body memory in so far as it is a habituation to something like the concrete other’s expressive style. Because it is inherently a sensory phenomenon, I speak of an (...) embodied sensorium of the other. I illustrate the phenomenon through contrasting case-vignettes taken from research in early parental bereavement. Based on this, I identify five modalities that outline the fundamental contours of a sensorium and specify that in their intermodal and synesthetic concretion they account for the felt sense of the other. Finally, I argue that the existential importance of the phenomenon is rooted in the distributed nature of my sense of self and self-familiarity. To illustrate this, I draw parallels between the felt sense of the concrete other and the felt sense of home and suggest that though there are also distinct differences between the two phenomena, they are rooted in the same underlying existential need for feeling-at-home in the world. Several difficulties, concerning the individuation and the variation of tropes, beset the initial classic version of trope theory. K. Campbell (Abstract particulars, Oxford, Basil Blackwell, 1990) presented a modified version that aims to avoid those difficulties. Unfortunately, the revised theory cannot make the case that one of the fundamental tropes, space-time, is a genuine particular.

I argue that there is a version of (quasi-Armstrongian) weak illusionism that intelligibly relates phenomenal concepts and introspective opacity, accounts for the (hard) problem intuitions Chalmers highlights (modal, epistemic, explanatory, and metaphysical), and undermines the most important arguments Chalmers deploys against type-B and type-C materialisms. If this is successful, we can satisfactorily account for the meta-problem of consciousness, mollify our hard problem intuitions, and remain genuine realists about phenomenal experience.

Kant's political thinking is predominantly evaluated in contractarian terms, though recent contributions have also emphasized the natural law influence on him. This paper argues that the assimilation of Kant into either tradition is problematic. An analysis of his account of political obligation cannot ignore the distinctiveness of Kant's general philosophical framework. Two recurrent Kantian themes are crucial to a reconstruction of his political argument. The first is the tension between freedom and causality, or nature. The second is the role of (...) reflective judgment in practical reasoning. The paper analyses Kant's property argument, and his related account of political obligation, from the perspective of these Kantian themes. Kant's ‘antinomy of Right’, formulated in the context of his property argument, is interpreted as a conflict between freedom and nature, and in analogy with the third antinomy of the Critique of Pure Reason. Kant's obscure theorem, the lex permissiva, is central to his ‘solution’ to the antinomy. The theorem is best understood as a reflective practical judgment, through which agents are brought to acknowledge that their obligations of justice towards one another are a direct entailment of their respective claims to property. The connection between property rights and political obligations is thus intrinsic, not extrinsic; the acknowledgement of that connection an act of reflective judgment, not contractual. (shrink)
