    (1 other version)Machine guessing I.David Miller - unknown
According to Karl Popper, the evolution of science, logically, methodologically, and even psychologically, is an involved interplay of acute conjectures and blunt refutations. Like biological evolution, it is an endless round of blind variation and selective retention. But unlike biological evolution, it incorporates, at the stage of selection, the use of reason. Part I of this two-part paper begins by repudiating the common beliefs that Hume’s problem of induction, which compellingly confutes the thesis that science is rational in the way (...)

Nine remarks provoked by two recent papers by Grünbaum.David Miller - unknown
The titles of two recent papers [1976a], [1976b] by Professor Grünbaum pose two questions, negative answers to which would seem to strike at the heart of the methodology developed by Sir Karl Popper. Grünbaum does not exactly answer these questions in the negative, nor in the affirmative either; after involved discussion he simply concludes that Popper has in neither case adequately defended an affirmative answer. On the subject of the first of these questions — ‘Can a theory answer more questions (...)

It is time for a new paper about open questions in the currently very active area of randomness and computability. Ambos-Spies and Kučera presented such a paper in 1999 [1]. All the question in it have been solved, except for one: is KL-randomness different from Martin-Löf randomness? This question is discussed in Section 6.Not all the questions are necessarily hard—some simply have not been tried seriously. When we think a question is a major one, and therefore likely to be hard, (...)

Evaluation of Interventions to Address Moral Distress: A Multi-method Approach.Lucia D. Wocial, Genina Miller, Kianna Montz, Michelle LaPradd & James E. Slaven - 2024 - HEC Forum 36 (3):373-401.
Moral distress is a well-documented phenomenon for health care providers (HCPs). Exploring HCPs’ perceptions of participation in moral distress interventions using qualitative and quantitative methods enhances understanding of intervention effectiveness. The purpose of this study was to measure and describe the impact of a two-phased intervention on participants’ moral distress. Using a cross-over design, the project aimed to determine if the intervention would decrease moral distress, enhance moral agency, and improve perceptions about the work environment. We used quantitative instruments and (...)

  13. Horwich, meaning and Kripke's Wittgenstein.Alexander Miller - 2000 - Philosophical Quarterly 50 (199):161-174.
Paul Horwich has argued that Kripke's Wittgenstein's 'sceptical challenge' to the notion of meaning and rule-following only gets going if an 'inflationary' conception of truth is presupposed, and he develops a 'use-theoretic' conception of meaning which he claims is immune to Kripke's Wittgenstein's sceptical attack. I argue that even if we grant Horwich his 'deflationary' conception of truth, that is not enough to undermine Kripke's Wittgenstein's sceptical argument. Moreover, Horwich's own 'use-theoretic' account of meaning actually falls prey to that sceptical (...)

One feature of language is that we are able to make mistakes in our use of language. Amongst other sorts of mistakes, we can misspeak, misspell, missign, or misunderstand. Given this, it seems that our metaphysics of words should be flexible enough to accommodate such mistakes. It has been argued that a nominalist account of words cannot accommodate the phenomenon of misspelling. I sketch a nominalist trope-bundle view of words that can.

Rhetoric, paideia and the old idea of a liberal education.Alistair Miller - 2007 - Journal of Philosophy of Education 41 (2):183–206.
This paper argues that the modern curriculum of academic subject disciplines embodies a rationalist conception of pure, universal knowledge that does little to cultivate, humanise or form the self. A liberal education in the classical humanist tradition, by contrast, develops a personal culture or paideia, an understanding of the self as a social, political and cultural being, and the practical wisdom needed to make judgements in practical, political and human affairs. The paper concludes by asking whether the old liberal curriculum, (...)

  20. The Metaphysics of Puns.James Miller - 2024 - Synthese (5):1-17.
In this paper, I aim to discuss what puns, metaphysically, are. I argue that the type-token view of words leads to an indeterminacy problem when we consider puns. I then outline an alternative account of puns, based on recent nominalist views of words, that does not suffer from this indeterminacy.

Thomas Hobbes and the constraints that enable the imitation of God.Ted H. Miller - 1999 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 42 (2):149 – 176.
Hobbes promises to teach philosophers how to imitate God. With this bold claim as its basis, the paper questions the widely accepted view that Hobbes authored an early instance of a modern social science. It focuses on the constraints that Hobbes imposes on the language of philosophical practitioners. He restricts its truth-claims to the closed circle of language; he does not philosophize to describe, model, predict, or mirror empirical reality. He nevertheless makes claims for a useful science, one that can (...)

The Technological Singularity: Managing the Journey.Stuart Armstrong, Victor Callaghan, James Miller & Roman Yampolskiy (eds.) - 2017 - Berlin, Heidelberg: Imprint: Springer.
This volume contains a selection of authoritative essays exploring the central questions raised by the conjectured technological singularity. In informed yet jargon-free contributions written by active research scientists, philosophers and sociologists, it goes beyond philosophical discussion to provide a detailed account of the risks that the singularity poses to human society and, perhaps most usefully, the possible actions that society and technologists can take to manage the journey to any singularity in a way that ensures a positive rather than a (...)

    A Feminist Account of Global Responsibility.Sarah Clark Miller - 2011 - Social Theory and Practice 37 (3):391-412.
Contemporary philosophical discourse on global responsibility has sustained a nearly unwavering focus on justice. In response, I investigate an underrepresented element in global justice discussions: insights from feminist philosophy, and more specifically, from the ethics of care. I assess current theories of cosmopolitanism, criticizing the shortcomings of cosmopolitan justice from the perspective of cosmopolitan care. Through the concepts of dependence, vulnerability, and need, I develop a feminist global obligation--the global duty to care--and explore the distinctive vision it offers as the (...)

We present an experiment designed to investigate three different mechanisms to achieve impartiality in distributive justice. We consider a first-person procedure, inspired by the Rawlsian veil of ignorance, and two third-party procedures, an involved spectator and a detached observer. First-person veiled stakeholders and involved spectators are affected by an initially unfair distribution that, in the stakeholders’ case, is to be redressed. We find substantial differences in the redressing task. Detached observers propose significantly fairer redistributions than veiled stakeholders or involved spectators. (...)

Complexity of equivalence relations and preorders from computability theory.Egor Ianovski, Russell Miller, Keng Meng Ng & André Nies - 2014 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 79 (3):859-881.
We study the relative complexity of equivalence relations and preorders from computability theory and complexity theory. Given binary relationsR,S, a componentwise reducibility is defined byR≤S⇔ ∃f∀x, y[x R y↔fS f].Here, fis taken from a suitable class of effective functions. For us the relations will be on natural numbers, andfmust be computable. We show that there is a${\rm{\Pi }}_1^0$-complete equivalence relation, but no${\rm{\Pi }}_k^0$-complete fork≥ 2. We show that${\rm{\Sigma }}_k^0$preorders arising naturally in the above-mentioned areas are${\rm{\Sigma }}_k^0$-complete. This includes polynomial timem-reducibility on (...)

The differential aging effect is shown to be valid in any physically reasonable extension of the special theory of relativity which includes a description of accelerating observers. Einstein's controversial assumption—the clock hypothesis—is avoided. Instead, it is sufficient to assume accessibility—that it is possible to travel from one inertial observer to another and then return to the first in a reasonable manner. Since Minkowski space-time displays this accessibility property, there must be an error in Sachs's quaternion development of general relativity. No (...)

A Logic Programming Language with Lambda-abstraction, Function Variables, and Simple Unification.Dale Miller - 1991 - LFCS, Department of Computer Science, University of Edinburgh.
As a result of these restrictions, an implementation of L [subscript lambda] does not need to implement full higher-order unification. Instead, an extension to first-order unification that respects bound variable names and scopes is all that is required. Such unification problems are shown to be decidable and to possess most general unifiers when unifiers exist. A unification algorithm and logic programming interpreter are described and proved correct. Several examples of using L[subscript lambda] as a meta-programming language are presented.
