A “little bit illegal”? Withholding and withdrawing of mechanical ventilation in the eyes of German intensive care physicians.Sabine Beck, Andreas van de Loo & Stella Reiter-Theil - 2008 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 11 (1):7-16.
Research questions and backgroundThis study explores a highly controversial issue of medical care in Germany: the decision to withhold or withdraw mechanical ventilation in critically ill patients. It analyzes difficulties in making these decisions and the physicians’ uncertainty in understanding the German terminology of Sterbehilfe, which is used in the context of treatment limitation. Used in everyday language, the word Sterbehilfe carries connotations such as helping the patient in the dying process or helping the patient to enter the dying process. (...)

  3. Wittgenstein, Loos, and the Critique of Ornament.Andreas Vrahimis - 2021 - Estetika: The Central European Journal of Aestetics 58 (2):144–159.
Adolf Loos is one of the few figures that Wittgenstein explicitly named as an influence on his thought. Loos’s influence has been debated in the context of determining Wittgenstein’s relation to modernism, as well as in attempts to come to terms with his work as an architect. This paper looks in a different direction, examining a remark in which Wittgenstein responded to Heidegger’s notorious pronouncement that ‘the Nothing noths’ by reference to Loos’s critique of ornamentation. Wittgenstein draws a parallel between (...)

  4. Having Enough of a Say.Andreas Bengtson & Lasse Nielsen - forthcoming - Economics and Philosophy.
Political Equality is the view that, in political matters, everyone should have an equal say. Political Sufficiency is the view that, in political matters, everyone should have enough of a say. Whereas Political Equality is concerned with relativities, Political Sufficiency is a matter of absolutes. It is natural to assume that, to justify ‘one person, one vote,’ we must appeal to Political Equality. We argue that this is not the case. If Political Equality justifies ‘one person, one vote,’ so does (...)

This paper explores the relation between natural modality and our modelling practices. It will be argued that some modelling practices such as abstraction and idealization should be understood as presupposing empirical claims about objective modal features of the behavior of target systems. To establish the connection between natural modality on the one hand and modelling practices on the other an analysis of natural modality in terms of empirically accessible invariance relations will be provided.

    A multiplicative ingredient for omega-inconsistency.Andreas Fjellstad - 2025 - Australasian Journal of Logic 22 (3):289-307.
This paper presents a distinctively multiplicative quantificational principle that arguably captures the problematic aspects of Zardini's infinitary rules for a multiplicative quantifier within the context of the semantic paradoxes and the theoretical goal to obtain a (omega)-consistent theory of transparent truth. After showing that the principle is derivable with Zardini's rules and that one obtains through vacuous quantification an inconsistent theory of truth if truth is transparent, the paper presents two results regarding the principle and omega-inconsistency. First, the principle is (...)

Christian Wolff's Analysis of Imputation and the Question of the “Taming of Philosophy”.Andreas Blank - 2024 - History of Philosophy Quarterly 41 (3):207-225.
Michael Della Rocca has claimed that using intuitions expressed in everyday language for philosophical purposes leads to a “taming of philosophy.” The present article uses an aspect of Christian Wolff's arguments from common notions as a test case for this claim. It is argued that arguments from common linguistic usage in Wolff's analysis of imputation allow for reasoned choices between competing philosophical theories and provide insights into aspects of social reality that are expressed in common notions. This is so because (...)

Socialism.Andreas Albertsen & Jens Jørund Tyssedal - 2024 - Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics.
Socialism is a large and diverse political tradition, unified by opposition to capitalism. Economically, socialists also typically support common ownership or some form of social, democratic control over the bulk of the means of production. There are various views on whether this requires central planning or is compatible with some form of market economy. Others understand socialism as a set of values, and either way, those who understand socialism in economic terms are often motivated by what they see as the (...)

The Freedom of Future People.Andreas T. Schmidt - forthcoming - Philosophy and Public Affairs.
What happens to liberal political philosophy, if we consider not only the freedom of present but also future people? In this article, I explore the case for long-term liberalism: freedom should be a central goal, and we should often be particularly concerned with effects on long-term future distributions of freedom. I provide three arguments. First, liberals should be long-term liberals: liberal arguments to value freedom give us reason to be (particularly) concerned with future freedom, including freedom in the far future. (...)

Many of our endeavors -- be it personal or communal, technological or artistic -- aim at eradicating all traces of dissatisfaction from our daily lives. They seek to cure us of our discontent in order to deliver us a fuller and flourishing existence. But what if ubiquitous pleasure and instant fulfilment make our lives worse, not better? What if discontent isn't an obstacle to the good life but one of its essential ingredients? In Propelled, Andreas Elpidorou makes a lively (...)

Why is national integration achieved in some diverse countries, while others are destabilized by political inequality between ethnic groups, contentious politics, or even separatism and ethnic war? :Brain–computer interfaces are driven essentially by algorithms; however, the ethical role of such algorithms has so far been neglected in the ethical assessment of BCIs. The goal of this article is therefore twofold: First, it aims to offer insights into whether the problems related to the ethics of BCIs can be better grasped with the help of already existing work on the ethics of algorithms. As a second goal, the article explores what kinds of solutions are available in that body (...)

    Unjust equal relations.Andreas Bengtson - 2025 - Economics and Philosophy 41 (1):98-118.
According to relational egalitarianism, justice requires equal relations. In this paper, I ask the question: can equal relations be unjust according to relational egalitarianism? I argue that while on some conceptions of relational egalitarianism, equal relations cannot be unjust, there are conceptions in which equal relations can be unjust. Surprisingly, whether equal relations can be unjust cuts across the distinction between responsibility-sensitive and non-responsibility-sensitive conceptions of relational egalitarianism. I then show what follows if one accepts a conception in which equal (...)

    Am I Socially Related to Myself?Andreas Bengtson - 2025 - Erkenntnis 90 (2):425-442.
According to relational egalitarianism, justice requires equal relations. The theory applies to those who stand in the relevant social relations. In this paper, I distinguish four different accounts of what it means to be socially related and argue that in all of them, self-relations—how a person relates to themselves—fall within the scope of relational egalitarianism. I also point to how this constrains what a person is allowed to do to themselves.

Friedrich Schleiermacher als Philosoph.Andreas Arndt - 2013 - De Gruyter.

This article explores some current transformations of the social. It argues for a shift from a model of sociality based on community towards a network sociality. This shift is particularly visible in urban spaces and in the cultural industries. However, it seems to become paradigmatic more widely of the information society. The article is to be read as a cultural hypothesis. In the first part I introduce some examples that document the rise of a network sociality. Most of these examples (...)

Varieties of Popular Science and the Transformations of Public Knowledge: Some Historical Reflections.Andreas W. Daum - 2009 - Isis 100 (2):319-332.
ABSTRACT This essay suggests that we should understand the varieties of “popular science” as part of a larger phenomenon: the changing set of processes, practices, and actors that generate and transform public knowledge across time, space, and cultures. With such a reconceptualization we can both de‐essentialize and historicize the idea of “popularization,” free it from normative notions, and move beyond existing imbalances in scholarship. The history of public knowledge might thus find a central place in many fundamental narratives of the (...)

Folsom Transplant Blues: What is wrong with offering the incarcerated shorter sentences for donating organs and bone marrow?Andreas Albertsen & Jens Damgaard Thaysen - forthcoming - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics:1-7.
In Massachusetts, a proposed bill would reduce the sentence of those incarcerated who become living donors of either organs or bone marrow. We outline two concerns with such a proposal, which relate directly to the content of the proposal (as opposed to broader debates about payment for organs and validity of consent obtained from the incarcerated). The first of these concerns is about equality of opportunity. The proposal provides the opportunity for a sentence reduction for some but not for others (...)

Schleiermacher’s Dialectics is rooted in the background of the problems and discussions of classical German philosophy after Kant’s work. On the one hand, it reacts to the attempts at a system by adopting a position that goes beyond the dispute over the foundations of knowledge. On the other hand, it shares with post-Kantian philosophy the search for mediation and unification of idealism and realism. Likewise, Dialectics should not be understood as a closed and defi-nitive system, but according to the figure (...)

Secondly, the limits of an evolutionary perspective of law recommended by legal pragmatism are considered. This paper seeks to bring John Dewey’s pragmatist philosophy of democratic education and the public into dialogue with Ernesto Laclau’s theory of populism. Recognizing populism as an integral aspect of democracy, rather than as its antithesis, the purpose of this paper is to provide a theoretical account of populism as being of educational relevance in two respects. First, it argues that the populist logic specifies a set of formal elements by which democratic education could operate as a collective enterprise. Second, (...)

The “As” and the Open: On the Methodological Relevance of Heidegger’s Anthropocentrism.Andreas Beinsteiner - 2017 - Studia Phaenomenologica 17:41-56.
Martin Heidegger distinguishes the human—as a world-forming, historical being that is capable of language—from the animal, which, according to him, is poor in world, ahistorical and incapable of language. This clear-cut distinction, which is connected to Heidegger’s anti-biologism, has frequently been criticised. By discussing the criticism of Matthew Calcaro, Giorgio Agamben and Jacques Derrida, the present paper aims to show that in Heidegger the human-animal difference is not a biologically determined distinction, human language is not understood as an instrument of (...)

As a solution to the boundary problem, the question of who should take part in making democratic decisions, the all-affected principle has gained widespread support. An unexplored issue in relation to the all-affected principle is whether there is an asymmetry between being affected negatively and positively. Is it the case that only being negatively affected, and not positively affected, by a decision generates a claim to inclusion under the all-affected principle? I call this the question of asymmetry. Some answer the (...)

Hegel’s Phenomenology is based on the insight into the historic existence of spirit and the historic constitution of truth. Still, the “work of world history” is not exactly the topic of Phenomenology; it is the appropriation of his results in the knowledge of spirit. Thus, Hegel’s work does not directly point to historic experience, but should rather be understood as a systematic arrangement of historically identifying positions.
