    Dual superconductivity. Variations on a theme.Alex Kovner - 1997 - Foundations of Physics 27 (1):101-111.
Its is pointed out that the low-energy effective theory that describes the low-lying glueballs of the pure Yang-Mills theory sustains static classical stringlike solutions. We suggest that these objects can be identified with the QCD flux tubes and their energy per unit length with the string tension.

Two dogmas of research ethics and the integrative approach to human-subjects research.Alex John London - 2007 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 32 (2):99 – 116.
This article argues that lingering uncertainty about the normative foundations of research ethics is perpetuated by two unfounded dogmas of research ethics. The first dogma is that clinical research, as a social activity, is an inherently utilitarian endeavor. The second dogma is that an acceptable framework for research ethics must impose constraints on this endeavor whose moral force is grounded in role-related obligations of either physicians or researchers. This article argues that these dogmas are common to traditional articulations of the (...)

(1 other version)Beneficent Intelligence: A Capability Approach to Modeling Benefit, Assistance, and Associated Moral Failures Through AI Systems.Alex John London & Hoda Heidari - 2024 - Minds and Machines 34 (4):1-37.
The prevailing discourse around AI ethics lacks the language and formalism necessary to capture the diverse ethical concerns that emerge when AI systems interact with individuals. Drawing on Sen and Nussbaum’s capability approach, we present a framework formalizing a network of ethical concepts and entitlements necessary for AI systems to confer meaningful benefit or assistance to stakeholders. Such systems enhance stakeholders’ ability to advance their life plans and well-being while upholding their fundamental rights. We characterize two necessary conditions for morally (...)

Issues for business ethics in the nineties and beyond.Alex C. Michalos - 1997 - Journal of Business Ethics 16 (3):219-230.
Nine issues of fundamental importance for business ethics are examined with a view to encouraging researchers in the field to direct their attention to them in the 1990s and beyond. The issues are related to organized labour, social dumping, international finance and Third World debt, tobacco promotion, arms trade, wealth concentration and taxation, pollution and resource depletion, international trading blocks, and the Canadian Business Council on National Issues and other business organizations.

  7. Intransitive Ethics.Alex Friedman - 2009 - Journal of Moral Philosophy 6 (3):277-297.
This article addresses the question of whether the relation of moral preference is transitive. I argue, following Larry Temkin and Stuart Rachels, that any ethical theory complex enough to be even minimally plausible allows us to generate intransitive sets of preferences. Even act utilitarianism cannot avoid this predicament unless we accept its least plausible version. We must reevaluate the assumption that an ethical theory must be transitive in order to be rational. This problem amounts to a foundational crisis in ethics. (...)

The Pluralism of Coherent Approaches to Global Health.Alex John London - 2017 - Hastings Center Report 47 (5):26-27.
Stakeholders in global health, including governments, international and nongovernmental organizations, and corporations, face complex decisions about how to help improve the lives of those most burdened by sickness and disease while upholding their rights and facilitating the transition to a more just social and political order. In “The Case for Resource-Sensitivity: Why It Is Ethical to Provide Cheaper, Less Effective Treatments in Global Health,” Govind Persad and Ezekiel Emanuel argue that “[t]he provision of health care in developing countries should reflect (...)

    For analytic bioethics.Alex Broadbent - 2008 - Clinical Ethics 3 (4):185-188.
This paper argues that bioethics requires analysis, which is not explicitly ethical in character. The first part of the paper argues the general point, that ethical problems can arise not only on occasions when moral values make conflicting recommendations, but also in understanding the facts. I suggest that this is particularly so where the facts are provided by the biomedical sciences, since it is often not clear how to relate their conceptual framework to that in which we frame our value (...)

Metalogic of Intuitionistic Propositional Calculus.Alex Citkin - 2010 - Notre Dame Journal of Formal Logic 51 (4):485-502.
With each superintuitionistic propositional logic L with a disjunction property we associate a set of modal logics the assertoric fragment of which is L . Each formula of these modal logics is interdeducible with a formula representing a set of rules admissible in L . The smallest of these logics contains only formulas representing derivable in L rules while the greatest one contains formulas corresponding to all admissible in L rules. The algebraic semantic for these logics is described.

Legal pluralism: new trajectories in law.Alex Green - 2025 - New York, NY: Routledge. Edited by Jennifer Hendry.
This book examines the development and fundamental nature of legal pluralism. Legal pluralism evokes two distinctions: 'state' vs 'non-state' law; and 'law' vs 'non-law'. As such, although this book focuses upon circumstances where two or more legal orders compete to govern the same social space, it also addresses the nature of law in general. Drawing on material conflicts arising within jurisdictions such as Australia, Burundi, Cameroon, Gambia, the United States, and Zambia, this book explores the conceptual, moral, and political challenges (...)

Has mental time travel really affected human culture?Alex Mesoudi - 2007 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 30 (3):326-327.
Suddendorf & Corballis (S&C) claim that mental time travel has significantly affected human cultural change. This echoes a common criticism of theories of Darwinian cultural evolution: that, whereas evolution is blind, culture is directed by people who can foresee and plan for future events. Here I argue that such a claim is premature, and more rigorous tests of S&C's claim are needed.

In celebration of Einstein's remarkable achievements in 1905, this essay examines some of his views on the role of “intellectuals” in developing and advocating socio-economic and political positions and policies, the historical roots of his ethical views and certain aspects of his philosophy of science. As an outstanding academic and public citizen, his life and ideas continue to provide good examples of a life well-used and worth remembering.

    Mid-Victorian Liberalism and the Austrian state, 1848–1867.Alex Middleton - 2020 - History of European Ideas 46 (5):582-600.
ABSTRACT This article examines attitudes towards the Austrian state among British Liberals, in the years between the European revolutions of 1848 and the Austro-Hungarian Compromise of 1867. Much commentary in this period treated Austria as an antagonistic, autocratic menace, as had become conventional since Waterloo. But the 1850s and 1860s also saw the growth of a more substantial interest in the architecture of the Habsburg monarchy. Its transition from despotism to constitutionalism was used to affirm some of the basic claims (...)
