A partir de la popularización de las drogas a mediados del siglo XX y su impacto social, económico y cultural, todo el planeta se transformó. Colombia, por las condiciones específicas de su geografía y la idiosincrasia de sus gentes, ha sido un escenario idóneo para la producción, circulación, distribución y consumo de sustancias psicotrópicas. A lo largo de la historia reciente del país, periodistas, abogados y políticos, entre otros, han entendido que la ilegalidad de las drogas no admite concesiones, porque (...) el narcotráfico se adapta con total facilidad a cualquier expresión de la violencia. Desde las periferias geográficas los artistas e intelectuales se han incluido en ese debate contribuyendo con un repertorio variado y sugestivo de obras. Esta revisión de archivo de las producciones culturales ligadas al tráfico de drogas busca la construcción de una cartografía que permita la orientación para encontrar la salida del laberinto. Con toda seguridad la visión específica del caso colombiano puede iluminar al resto de países de Latinoamérica. (shrink)

In this volume, we have chosen to highlight the importance of education to human rights by reprinting two articles written by Paulo Freire in 1970 for the _Harvard Educational Review_. These articles contain many of Freire's original ideas on human rights and education—issues that are central to his work. Freire was a pioneer in promoting the universal right to education and literacy as part of a commitment to people's struggle against oppression. As Jerome Bruner recognized after Freire's death in May (...) 1997, Freire left as a legacy his commitment to basic human rights: "He was a brave man as well as a far-sighted one. He made us aware of our mindless cruelties, and now the challenge to all of us is to do something about those cruelties.". (shrink)

In a very recent paper (2010), Dominic McIver Lopes has claimed that pictures perceptually ground demonstrative reference to depicted objects. If as I think Lopes is right, this has important consequences for the debate on the semantics/pragmatics divide. For one can exploit Lopes' claim in order to provide one more argument in favour of the well-known contextualist thesis that wide context has not only both a pre- and a post-semantic role, but also a semantic role – to put it in (...) There are two interpretations of what it means for a singular term to be referentially direct, one truth-conditional and the other cognitive. It has been argued that on the former interpretation, both proper names and indexicals refer directly, whereas on the latter only proper names are directly referential. However, these interpretations in fact apply to the same singular terms. This paper argues that, if conceived in purely normative terms, the linguistic meaning of indexicals can no longer be held to make (...) these terms referentially indirect under the second interpretation. We argue that, in certain circumstances, doctors might beprofessionallyjustified to provide abortions even in those jurisdictions where abortion is illegal. That it is at least professionally permissible does not mean that they have an all-things-considered ethical justification or obligation to provide illegal abortions or that professional obligations or professional permissibility trump legal obligations. It rather means that professional organisations should respect and indeed protect doctors’ positive claims of conscience to provide abortions if they plausibly track what is in the best (...) medical interests of their patients. It is the responsibility of state authorities to enforce the law, but it is the responsibility of professional organisations to uphold the highest standards of medical ethics, even when they conflict with the law. Whatever the legal sanctions in place, healthcare professionals should not be sanctioned by the professional bodies for providing abortions according to professional standards, even if illegally. Indeed, professional organisation should lobby to offer protection to such professionals. Our arguments have practical implications for what healthcare professionals and healthcare professional organisations may or should do in those jurisdictions that legally prohibit abortion, such as some US States after the reversal ofRoe v Wade. Some years ago, Howard Wettstein provided an original defense of the New Theory of Reference (NTR), the doctrine that singular terms such as names and indexicals are directly referential terms (DRTs), contributing only their reference to the truth-conditions of the tokened sentence they occur in. Wettstein maintained that in order to be semantically adequate, NTR does not have to account for what he calls Frege’s data on cognitive significance, those puzzling facts about language that prompt one to think that meaning (...) entails more than reference to (real) objects. He later put forward another, apparently paradoxical, thesis, namely that whatever this cognitive significance that explains Frege’s data is, it cannot be reduced to the representations one has in one’s mind. In what follows, however, I will first apply the notion of referential anaphorical transfer to mixed contexts in order to show that a New Theorist has to reject Wettstein’s initial thesis as it stands, although she may endorse a weaker version of it, one that especially tallies with his second thesis. I will further argue that, insofar as rejecting Wettstein’s initial thesis does not force the New Theorist to revert to a representional conception of cognitive significance, in particular one based on the notion of a mental file, the latter thesis is absolutely correct. It is thus fitted to become a cornerstone of the New Theory, whatever form of non-mentalistic interpretation the New Theorist might wish to give to the notion of cognitive significance. (shrink)

Lo que pretendemos en las páginas siguientes es mostrar que la fundamentación kantiana de la ontología tiene como fin la liberación de la posibilidad de lo que kantianamente se denomina “metafísica propiamente dicha”. Para ello nos centraremos, principalmente, en exponer la fundamentación de la ontología que tiene lugar en la Analítica Trascendental de la _Crítica de la Razón pura _, ofreciendo posteriormente una visión tanto del lugar sistemático que la ontología, como metafísica general, ocupa en el sistema con respecto a (...) las metafísicas particulares, como de la relación entre ontología y metafísica. El fin de todo ello es desentrañar la significación que en este último término tiene el prefijo “meta-”, y mostrar que para su correcta interpretación se precisa de una distinción de sentidos del ser, a saber, del ser de lo sensible y del ser de lo suprasensible, como doble régimen semántico para una gramática de la naturaleza y de la libertad. Based on the concept of data physicalization, we developed Vital + Morph, an interactive surface for remote connection and awareness of clinical data. It enables users located in remote places to monitor and feel the vital signs measured from a hospitalized person through shape-change. We propose shape-changing interfaces as a way of making data physicalization a richer, intriguing and memorable experience that communicates complex information and insights about data. To demonstrate and validate our proposed concept, we developed an exploratory study (...) about the design and its implications. For evaluating the social impact of shape-changing interfaces in the context of remote monitoring, we presented Vital + Morph in several Media Art festivals. We collected and analyzed the feedback from the visitors during the exhibitions, and discussed the possibilities of the proposed system. A preliminary evaluation shows how shape-changing displays are perceived by users, which establishes not only the potential benefits but also highlights the concerns that several users have raised. Through this study, we aim to contribute to the design of remote monitoring systems by providing a novel approach for displaying clinical data that consider the richness of the physical world. In today’s information-driven society, we should not just focus on how abstract data are collected and analyzed, but also on how it can be presented and incorporated into our daily lives. (shrink)

John of Scythopolis, the first scholiast of the Corpus Dionysiacum, played a role in the debates that took place after the Council of Chalcedon in 451 and contributed in an original way to the development of Christological dogma in preparation for the Council of Constantinople II in 553. In particular, he uses the theopaschite formula both in its so-called “Alexandrian” version as well as in that attributed to the Scythian monks. Several instances of the formula occur in three of his (...) Scholia on Dionysius’s De divinis nominibus and show both his concentration upon the hypostasis of the Word as well as his identification of Christ with the Lovgoç. In this way, he looks for a new via media within Christological doctrine that truly can be called “Neo-chalcedonian.”. (shrink)

With the pressing shortage of human organs and recent breakthroughs in gene editing, xenotransplantation—using animal organs, tissues or cells for human transplants—offers new hope for patients on wait lists. The use of genome editing technologies to produce xenotransplants from pigs with reduced immunogenicity has recently brought renewed attention to the field while also raising a host of ethical dilemmas. These concerns include animal welfare, the risks of zoonotic diseases, the moral implications of crossing species boundaries and the potential inequities in (...) access to such treatments. In their article ‘Who shall go first? A multicriteria approach to patient selection for first clinical trials of cardiac xenotransplantation’,1 Kögel and colleagues propose an ethical framework for selecting patients in cardiac xenotransplantation trials. They argue that while significant advances have been made with xenotransplants in brain-dead humans, limited knowledge can be gained from procedures performed outside clinical trials. According to them, knowledge production should be prioritised, and terminally ill patients who are unlikely to survive would not contribute meaningfully to scientific understanding or benefit from the procedure. El artículo provee una interpretación de la actual crisis financiera como parte de una crisis económica que tiene una serie de facetas sincronizadas, -amén de lo financiero, en lo ambiental, lo energético, lo alimentario- eventuales antesalas de una profunda y prolongada crisis civilizatoria. Plantea la necesidad de no reducir la atención sólo a los temas coyunturales y de diseñar una estrategia que permita sentar las bases estructurales para el cambio, aprovechando las actuales dificultades coyunturales y las debilidades relativas de los (...) centros de poder mundial. Presenta tres propuestas que apuntan hacia la construcción de un nuevo y mejor sistema económico internacional, pilares sobre los cuales se puede empezar a diseñar un nuevo sistema financiero y monetario mundial: un Código Financiero Internacional; un Banco Central Mundial, y un Tribunal Internacional de Arbitraje de Deuda Soberana. Plantea la necesidad de repensar íntegramente la Organización Mundial de Comercio (OMC), así como la creación de una Organización Mundial de Medio Ambiente y del Cambio Climático y dar paso a la Declaración Universal de los Derechos de la Naturaleza, tal como lo hizo la Asamblea Constituyente del Ecuador. Some scholars have understood Karl-Otto Apel's Transcendental Pragmatics as a linguistic and pragmatic transformation of Johann G. Fichte's philosophy. The aim of this paper is to show that this interpretation confuses subjective intention with transcendental knowledge. The paper begins with a reconstruction of some aspects of this interpretation. Next, an argument against the Transcendental Pragmatics based on this interpretation is examined. The conclusion is that the difference between subjective intention and transcendental knowledge can be explained with the help of a (...) strict reflection on the speech acts of this argument.Algunos estudiosos han comprendido la Pragmática Trascendental de Karl-Otto Apel como una transformación pragmático lingüística de la filosofía de Johann G. Fichte. El objetivo de este trabajo es mostrar que esa interpretación confunde intención subjetiva con conocimiento trascendental. El trabajo comienza con una reconstrucción de algunos aspectos de esa interpretación. Luego es examinado un argumento contra la pragmática trascendental basado en esa interpretación. La conclusión es que la diferencia entre intención subjetiva y conocimiento trascendental puede ser explicada con la ayuda de una reflexión estricta sobre los actos de habla de ese argumento. This article reconsiders Marx’s thinking on religion in light of current preoccupations with the encroachment of religious practices and beliefs into political life. It argues that Marx formulates a critique of the anticlerical and Enlightenment-critique of religion, in which he subsumes the secular repudiation of spiritual authority and religious transcendence into a broader analysis of the ‘real abstractions’ that dominate our social existence. The tools forged by Marx in his engagement with critiques of religious authority allow him to discern the (...) ‘religious’ and ‘transcendent’ dimension of state and capital, and may contribute to a contemporary investigation into the links between capitalism as a religion of everyday life and what Mike Davis has called the current ‘reenchantment of catastrophic modernity’. Others apparently can, and some construct elaborate theories of propositional structure… Perhaps I am blind to a possibility that other, cognitively better endowed philosophers see. From my unseeing perspective, though, it is more likely that the appearance of sight deceives.

El objetivo de este artículo es explicar la interpretación política que Vico ofrece del precepto apolíneo “nosce te ipsum”. El artículo comienza con el problema del conocimiento de sí mismo en la primera Oración Inaugural y en el De Antiquissima. Luego, ese problema es puesto en relación con el origen de la autoconciencia en la Scienza nuova, con Solón y Esopo como universales fantásticos de la plebe y con el origen civil de la filosofía. La conclusión es que hay una (...) conexión entre el conocimiento de sí mismo, aconsejado por dicho precepto, y la reflexión filosófica que sostiene la base epistemológica de la ciencia viquiana.Palabras clave: Vico, autoconocimiento, autoconciencia, reflexión filosófica, política.The aim of this paper is to explain Vico’s political interpretation of the Apollonian prescription “nosce te ipsum”. The paper begins with the problem of the self-knowledge in the first Oration and in De Antiquissima. After that, this problem is related with the historical origin of self-consciousness in the Scienza nuova, with Solon and Aesop as imaginative universals of the plebs and with the civil origin of philosophy. The conclusion is that there is a connection between the self-knowledge advised for this prescription and the philosophical reflection that support the epistemological basis of Vico’s science.Keywords: self-knowledge, self-consciousness, philosophical reflection, politics. Whether it's a question of "human philosophy" or of the Christian understanding of action in a regime of efficacious grace, for Pascal despair is always the effect of an error of appreciation. We overestimate our misery and powerlessness, we make them the whole of our being and our action, and so we consider ourselves only miserable and totally powerless. Despair should therefore be prevented and neutralised when it takes hold of the soul, never advocated or fed. Never - except perhaps (...) in one case, and it is this case that we would like to address in this paper. A case that is all the more paradoxical because it is precisely in its proper place, where it is opportune and necessary, that despair appears difficult if not almost impossible to produce. (shrink)

In _Uncanny Rest_ Alberto Moreiras offers a meditation on intellectual life under the suspension of time and conditions of isolation. Focusing on his personal day-to-day experiences of the “shelter-in-place” period during the first months of the coronavirus pandemic, Moreiras engages with the limits and possibilities of critical thought in the realm of the infrapolitical—the conditions of existence that exceed average understandings of politics and philosophy. In each dated entry he works through the process of formulating a life’s worth of (...) thought and writing while attempting to locate the nature of thought once the coordinates of everyday life have changed. Offering nothing less than a phenomenology of thinking, Moreiras shows how thought happens in and out of a life, at a certain crossroads where memories collide, where conversations with interlocutors both living and dead evolve and thinking during a suspended state becomes provisional and uncertain. Born in 1945, John Lane Bell is not only one of the greatest logicians of our time, but he is also one the most gifted in the art of writing, as witnessed by the success of his introductory texts, many of which were originally written as lecture notes: their essential clarity is an exemplar of the Attic style. More generally, Bell’s works are a rare example of how rigour and sophisticated elegance can coexist.

The article examines the relationship between Western and Eastern aesthetics, analyzing some aspects of the musical production of Tōru Takemitsu, the great Japanese composer, now firmly included in the contemporary music “Western Canon”. The article tries to demonstrate that contemporary music represents an ideal field for verifying the intersection between Western and Eastern aesthetics. It is precisely the paradoxical co-belonging of Takemitsu’s musical thought to both worlds, which encourages us to reconsider our way of understanding the aesthetic “distance” between East (...) and West. Contemporary music represents the privileged place, to verify the idea, that such cultural distinctions are indeed relevant, but only to the extent that they should be transcended in a higher unity, in a “hypercultural” space. Within this space, the differences find their “place”, but also their reciprocal translatability. Takemitsu’s writings record the incessant oscillation between the great Western musical, aesthetic, poetic tradition, and the specifical Japanese cultural tradition. The names of Debussy, Messiaen, Nono, Feldman, Cage stand alongside those of Basho and Zeami, in an aesthetic convergence that is a prelude to a truly “global” aesthetic. The path proposed here analyzes this convergence, retracing, in Takemitsu’s production, three fundamental “figures”: silence, trees, and rain. (shrink)

Bayesian epistemology has close connections to inductive reasoning, accepting the view that inductive inferences should be analyzed in terms of epistemic probabilities. An important precept of Bayesian epistemology is the dynamics of belief change, with change in belief resulting from updating procedures based on new evidence. The inductive relations between evidence E and hypotheses or theories H are essential, particularly the notions of plausibility, confirmation, and acceptability, which are critical but subject to several difficulties. As a non-deductive process, Bayesian reasoning (...) cannot itself be subjected to strict deductive logic, but it can take advantage of an enabling logical environment. The present paper proposes that paraconsistent and paracomplete logics can be helpful for some questions of Bayesian epistemology, even to the point of being relevant in developing a legitimate paraconsistent Bayesian epistemology. By developing a novel probability theory based on the Logic of Evidence and Truth ( $${LET}_{F}$$ ), a logic that deals with evidence for or against a judgment, including contradictory or missing evidence, we allow for the possibility of quantifying the degree of evidence attributed to a proposition through novel probability measures. We illustrate, through examples, some ways to address challenging problems in the area by using paraconsistent and paracomplete paradigms. This topic is of significant interest not only in the philosophy of science but also in Artificial Intelligence and other emerging trends such as probabilistic networks and related models (see Haenni et al. Esta entrevista se realizó a la comunicadora española Marta Ramos Matas. En ella, expone las experiencias gratificantes que ha tenido al desempeñarse a nivel profesional, ya sea a través de la radio o el periódico a nivel. Para conseguir ese resultado, ella revela que le sirvió mucho tener como referentes a Àngels Barceló, Iker Jiménez, Carmen Porter y Alberto Matas. Por otro lado, ejercer esta función en su país es para ella ha generado percibir un alto nivel de (...) competitividad, ya que hay un gran número de personas que recurre a las mismas estrategias de difundir información, y que incluso no hacen un buen trabajo, debidoa que optan por denigrar la labor periodística al utilizar las fakenews. Esa sería una forma de transgredir los límites de la libertad de expresión, pues al no haber filtros en las redes sociales los usuarios comparten aquello que puede provenir de una fuente inverosímil.
