The aim of the paper is to consider selected aspects of social communication by means of digital media available to the public in a small town. The study includes The Lutomiersk News: Local Government Information Bulletin [Pol. “Wiadomości Lutomierskie. Informacyjny Biuletyn Samorządowy”], which is available on the website of the Lutomiersk Administrative District: 2017–2020, as well as the Internet portal of the Roman Catholic parish in Lutomiersk. Using the method of qualitative analysis, contents of the media were detrmined as well (...) as their characteristics and functions were investigated. It was shown that the overall contents of The Lutomiersk News reflect the functioning of the local government unit and of the people living there. On a bimonthly basis, the residents get a package of information on various aspects of life in the region. The parish-related medium, in turn, contains topics connected with the parishioners’ life, the Christian way of life, and community of Lutomiersk. (shrink)

In his engaging volume on fairytales, George MacDonald wrote that the purpose of a fairytale is “not to give the reader things to think about, but to wake up things that are in him." By contrast, many works of art, including contemporary musical compositions, are accompanied by statements of “things to think about,” such as didactic program notes by the composer on pet social justice issues. This essay explores what can be done in a piece of music to “wake up (...) things” already in the listener. These include invoking something familiar in the musical style, using essential building blocks of beauty in constructing the music, and providing a teleology of purpose and narrative flow in the music, in contrast to modernist trends that eschew these things. In this article, we present results from a literature review of intrinsic, instrumental, and relational values of nature conducted for the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services, as part of the Methodological Assessment of the Diverse Values and Valuations of Nature. We identify the most frequently recurring meanings in the heterogeneous use of different value types and their association with worldviews and other key concepts. From frequent uses, we determine a core meaning for each value type, which is (...) sufficiently inclusive to serve as an umbrella over different understandings in the literature and specific enough to help highlight its difference from the other types of values. Finally, we discuss convergences, overlapping areas, and fuzzy boundaries between different value types to facilitate dialogue, reduce misunderstandings, and improve the methods for valuation of nature's contributions to people, including ecosystem services, to inform policy and direct future research. © 2023 The Author(s).
