    The Ism in Veganism: The Case for a Minimal Practice-based Definition.Jonathan Dickstein & Jan Dutkiewicz - 2021 - Food Ethics 6 (1):1-19.
This article argues for limiting the definition of the term “veganism” to a minimal one that denotes veganism as the abstention from the consumption of animal-derived products, thereby treating it as a neutral term exclusively describing a pattern of action. As the practice of veganism has become popularized, the promotion of veganism and animal rights has gained mainstream attention, and scholarly research on veganism has proliferated, the term veganism has often come to be used to denote an ethical or political (...)

The Strong Case for Vegetarianism in Pātañjala Yoga.Jonathan Dickstein - 2017 - Philosophy East and West 67 (3):613-628.
In a recent interview, yoga historian David Gordon White commented on the precarious commitment that modern yoga has to so-called Classical Yoga. The predicament stems from a disjuncture between the contents of the Yogasūtra and the practices and concepts commonly taught in many yoga centers and trainings. The latter teachings resonate stronger with alternative traditions, specifically those illustrated in haṭha yoga and Vedānta sources and within their related living communities.1 As White concluded regarding this peculiar and ubiquitous selection of the (...)

More Limits in Jain Environmental Ethics.Jonathan Dickstein - forthcoming - Philosophy East and West.
Unlike anthropocentric, zoocentric, speciocentric, or biocentric perspectives, Jainism advances a sentiocentric view that grounds inherent worth in an organism’s capacity to feel, a capacity present in humans, animals, plants, and even microbes. Drawing on the insights of Christopher Framarin and Kristi Wiley, this article explores Jain sentiocentrism and examines it alongside “modernist” views that question the sentience attributed to certain organisms in the traditional Jain taxonomy. The article has three aims: (1) to demonstrate how the Jain sentiocentric system endures as (...)

Lacan and the Nonhuman.Gautam Basu Thakur & Jonathan Michael Dickstein (eds.) - 2018 - Cham: Springer Verlag.
This book initiates the discussion between psychoanalysis and recent humanist and social scientific interest in a fundamental contemporary topic – the nonhuman. The authors question where we situate the subject in current critical investigations of a nonanthropoentric universe. In doing so they unravel a less-than-human theory of the subject; explore implications of Lacanian teachings in relation to the environment, freedom, and biopolitics; and investigate the subjective enjoyments of and anxieties over nonhumans in literature, film, and digital media. This innovative volume (...)

  11. The Paradigm Shift in the 19th-century Polish Philosophy of Mathematics.Paweł Polak - 2022 - Studia Historiae Scientiarum 21:217-235.
The Polish philosophy of mathematics in the 19th century had its origins in the Romantic period under the influence of the then-predominant idealist philosophies. The decline of Romantic philosophy precipitated changes in general philosophy, but what is less well known is how it triggered changes in the philosophy of mathematics. In this paper, we discuss how the Polish philosophy of mathematics evolved from the metaphysical approach that had been formed during the Romantic era to the more modern positivistic paradigm. These (...)

The Philosophy of Mathematics and Logic in the 1920s and 1930s in Poland.Roman Murawski - 2014 - Basel: Imprint: Birkhäuser.
The aim of this book is to present and analyze philosophical conceptions concerning mathematics and logic as formulated by Polish logicians, mathematicians and philosophers in the 1920s and 1930s. It was a remarkable period in the history of Polish science, in particular in the history of Polish logic and mathematics. Therefore, it is justified to ask whether and to what extent the development of logic and mathematics was accompanied by a philosophical reflection. We try to answer those questions by analyzing (...)

  14. Mathematics and metaphysics: The history of the Polish philosophy of mathematics from the Romantic era.Paweł Jan Polak - 2021 - Philosophical Problems in Science (Zagadnienia Filozoficzne W Nauce) 71:45-74.
The Polish philosophy of mathematics in the 19th century is not a well-researched topic. For this period, only five philosophers are usually mentioned, namely Jan Śniadecki, Józef Maria Hoene-Wroński, Henryk Struve, Samuel Dickstein, and Edward Stamm. This limited and incomplete perspective does not allow us to develop a well-balanced picture of the Polish philosophy of mathematics and gauge its influence on 19th- and 20th-century Polish philosophy in general. To somewhat complete our picture of the history of the Polish philosophy (...)

The physician charter on medical professionalism: a Jewish ethical perspective.A. B. Jotkowitz - 2005 - Journal of Medical Ethics 31 (7):404-405.
The physician charter on medical professionalism creates standards of ethical behaviour for physicians and has been endorsed by professional organisations worldwide. It is based on the cardinal principles of the primacy of patient welfare, patient autonomy, and social welfare. There has been little discussion in the bioethics community of the doctrine of the charter and none from a Jewish ethical perspective. In this essay the authors discuss the obligations of the charter from a Jewish ethical viewpoint and call on other (...)

Gates of Eden: American Culture in the Sixties.Sohnya Sayres - 1978 - Telos: Critical Theory of the Contemporary 1978 (36):235-249.
Now that the 1960s are over by all accounts, one does not have to defend or deny the past: political stagnation mitigates the need for and makes absurd an heroic history of the sixties. Still, an apologist history remains unwarranted. Disguised apology is the difficulty with Gates of Eden. Dickstein tries to write a history of the culture of the sixties that will win back the trust of his intellectual fathers. These men, the so-called New York Intellectuals, had disparaged (...)

Brendel (bio)Keywordsbiopsychosocial model, pluralism, pragmatism, psychiatryFor many years now, there has been growing recognition of the powerful role of pragmatic reasoning in numerous disciplines, including bioethics, medicine, law, political science, and philosophy (Dickstein 1998; Rosenthal, Hausman, and Anderson 1999). But until recently, philosophical pragmatism was neglected by scholars exploring the clinical challenges and theoretical underpinnings of psychiatry. In (...)

We report a magnetization, magnetostriction, electrical resistivity, specific heat and neutron scattering study of a UNi 2/3 Rh 1/3 Al single crystal, a solid solution of an antiferromagnet UNiAl and a ferromagnet URhAl. The huge uniaxial magnetic anisotropy confining the principal magnetic response to the c axis in the parent compounds persists also for the solid solution. The magnetization curve at 1.6 K has a pronounced S shape with an inflection at 12 T. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility exhibits (...)
