Virtue, Commerce and Moderation in the 'Tale of the Troglodytes': Montesquieu's "Persian Letters".D. A. Desserud - 1991 - History of Political Thought 12 (4):605.
Recent scholarship has stressed Montesquieu's theory of moderate politics, suggesting that these contradictions exist only when we assume that Montesquieu was extolling the merits of a specific species of government (democracy, aristocratic republic, or monarchy) rather than a type of government (moderate). But unresolved is the point at which Montesquieu became enamoured with moderate regimes. Without entering directly into this debate, I am proposing that an examination of the Tale of the Troglodytes reveals that Montesquieu's interest in moderate government extends (...)

Edited book on the prospects of non-Platonist realism in the philosophy of mathematics. Physicalism holds that mathematics studies properties realised or realisable in the physical world. This collection of papers has its origin in a conference held at the University of Toronto in June of 1988. The theme of the conference was Physicalism in Mathematics: Recent Work in the Philosophy of Mathematics. At the conference, papers were read by Geoffrey Hellman (Minnesota), Yvon Gauthier (Montreal), Michael Hallett (McGill), Hartry Field (USC), (...)

That is, Saturno Augusto sacrum. Gaius Memmius Pudens sacerdos intrauit sub iugum libens animo. Intrauit sub iugum is peculiar to this text, but it is reasonable to suppose that the plain intrauit used in other inscriptions of priests of the African Saturnus is a shorter equivalent. Professor Schulten has suggested that some symbolical act indicating the assumption of priesthood is thereby indicated. We may go a little further.

    The meaning of dignity in nursing home care as seen by relatives.A. Rehnsfeldt, L. Lindwall, V. Lohne, B. Lillesto, A. Slettebo, A. K. T. Heggestad, T. Aasgaard, M. -B. Raholm, S. Caspari, B. Hoy, B. Saeteren & D. Naden - 2014 - Nursing Ethics 21 (5):507-517.
Background: As part of an ongoing Scandinavian project on the dignity of care for older people, this study is based on ‘clinical caring science’ as a scientific discipline. Clinical caring science examines how ground concepts, axioms and theories are expressed in different clinical contexts. Central notions are caring culture, dignity, at-home-ness, the little extra, non-caring cultures versus caring cultures and ethical context – and climate. Aim and assumptions: This study investigates the individual variations of caring cultures in relation to dignity (...)

    Peirce and Leibniz on Continuity and the Continuum.D. Christopoulou & D. A. Anapolitanos - 2020 - Metaphysica 21 (1):115-128.
This paper discusses some of C. S. Peirce’s insights about continuity in his attempt to grasp the concept of the mathematical continuum. After a discussion of his earlier notions which he called ‘Kanticity’ and ‘Aristotelicity’ we arrive at his later belief that a continuum is rather a system of potential points. In his mature views, Peirce grasps a continuum as “a whole range of possibilities” without points at all. In the sequel, we turn to take into account some of Leibniz’s (...)

The nature of measurement, and the true value of a measured quantity.H. Kirkham, A. Riepnieks, M. Albu & D. Laverty - 2018 - 2018 IEEE International Instrumentation and Measurement Technology Conference (I2MTC).
The words 'true value' assume an existential relationship with the thing being measured. There is assumed to exist some aspect of the thing being measured that is independent of its relationship to the person who is interested in the result of the measurement. Yet measurement is a response to the need of an observer to know something about the real world. There is therefore an epistemological aspect to measurement. Some aspect of measurement has to do with the observer as a (...)

    Reducts of (c, +, ⋅) which contain +.D. Marker & A. Pillay - 1990 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 55 (3):1243-1251.
We show that the structure (C,+,·) has no proper non locally modular reducts which contain +. In other words, if $X \subset \mathbf{C}^n$ is constructible and not definable in the module structure (C,+,λ a ) a ∈ C (where λ a denotes multiplication by a) then multiplication is definable in (C,+,X).
