In this article, I trace a shift in Confucian scholars’ interpretations about the idea of ‘learning for one’s self’ vs. ‘learning for others’ from the Analects: a shift from the philological interpretation to the philosophical one. Despite its defect, most Neo-Confucians accepted the philosophical interpretation, because it was considered to play a role of minimizing a newly emerged educational bane, that is, students’ exclusively instrumental study for civil service examinations, while establishing the supremacy of ‘learning for the cultivation of mind’. An appealing to original texts, a comparing linguistic variations in the forms of their offsprings (translations), a research of processes of branching of meanings, a reconstruction of the first-sense of texts, and especially those that were created centuries ago in ancient languages, that is enabling to improve translation or understanding of the history of the mentality of native and modern na- tive speakers — will always be relevant for any philological, linguistic and philosophical studies. This article is an attempt to (...) analyze and show how different the form and meaning of the same text can be in different languages and what can be common between different translations. For the first time, the comparison of the original fragments of Plato’s “The Republic” in Ancient Greek with their translations into Japanese and Korean translations has been done. Also, some fragments of Lithuanian, Latin, Latin and English translations are included. For the analysis, I propose the following two fragments of the text of the seventh book, namely the replica numbered 514a-514b of the dialogue of Socrates with Glaucon and the replica numbered 517b-517c. After all, in my opinion, there is the greatest concentration of philosophical terms associated with the myth of the cave, which interests me. (shrink)

Using the motif of the hipster to consider the arrival of the concept “Anthropocene” into the orbit of critical theory, this essay establishes the grave existential consequences that issue from the infatuation with, and rapid, uncritical uptake and circulation of, concepts in a philosophical market overcome by neoliberal pressures. These epistemic habits align with political commitments that unwittingly controvert the original intents of critique—and this paradox requires remediation. This essay, thus, argues for a recalibration of epistemic praxis by reclaiming a (...) retro, critical, vital form of philology—figured as both a scholarly practice and a way of life. The hope is to counter the stultifying force of the late-capitalist praxis of commodification, consumption, and hyper-production of concepts spawned by the fatal lure of progress narratives and the fetishization of innovation and originality they entail. Accordingly, we might resolve the tension between habits and politics and account for vital differences and resistances not revealed by the mutation of critique inherent in contemporary strategies. Thus, not only might epistemic politics evolve, but critical theory may also avert extinction by revitalizing it as a dynamic life practice. (shrink)

WellsHumboldt State UniversityOver the course of the last decade a fairly large number of Buddhist temples in South Korea have been destroyed or damaged by fire by misguided Christian fundamentalists. More recently, Buddhist statues have been identified as idols, and attacked (...) and decapitated in the name of Jesus. Arrests are hard to effect, as the arsonists and vandals work by stealth of night. In 1998, the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies announced its support for our Buddhist brothers and sisters and our disgust at such violent misuse of the name of Jesus. At the 1998 Board meeting, an ad hoc committee was set up to explore and develop strategies which would further address the situation. Below are some actions which have occurred during 1999. A Letter from Our President: The following letter of protest was sent on the Society's behalf on January 25, 1999 to the Prime Minister of the Republic of Korea and other governmental officials plus Korean church leaders and organizations. A second letter was sent to the U.S. State Department and the headquarters of various church bodies in the U.S. as well as the National Council of Churches. The Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies wishes to register its deepest sadness and most profound protest regarding the numerous acts of arson and malicious destruction done to Buddhist temples by misinformed and intolerant fundamentalist Christian groups throughout the Republic of South Korea. Professor Frank Tedesco of Sejong University first drew the attention of the Society to these incidents in an article he published in 1997 in Buddhist-Christian Studies, the journal of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies. More recently, two more Buddhist temples have been burned by fundamentalist Christians, seven hundred Buddhist images have been decapitated, and the Roman Catholic Cathedral was also burned because it contained images. All members of the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies, both Christian and Buddhist, are embarrassed that such acts have been done in the name of [End Page 239] Jesus Christ, a name that demands that all persons should live in justice and peace, not sectarian stupidity and religious fanaticism. The small, but vocal, number of fundamentalist Christians in Korea who defend such actions as blows against pagan idolatry are simply wrong. Their actions are contrary to the core of Christian teaching and practice, which is that all persons are to be treated with love, justice, and respect. There is no excuse for intra-religious violence in Buddhist or Christian teaching and practice. This Korean study replicated a previously published American study. The conceptual framework and method combined ethical enquiry and phenomenology. The research questions were: (1) What is nursing students’ experience of ethical problems involving nursing practice? and, (2) What is nursing students’ experience of using an ethical decision-making model? The participants were 97 senior baccalaureate nursing students, each of whom described one ethical problem and chose to use one of five ethical decision-making models. From 97 ethical problems, five content categories (...) emerged, the largest being health professionals (69%). The basic nature of the ethical problems was the students’ experience of conflict, resolution and rationale. Using an ethical decision-making model helped 94% of the students. A comparison of the Korean and American results yields important implications for nursing ethics education, practice and research. (shrink)

Korean civil society is often criticized because of its dual nature, that is, the paucity of social capital in everyday life and the plethora of collective political actions in the national civil society. Although liberals view such duality as the critical impediment to Korea’s authentic democratization, which would represent a fundamental, liberal-pluralist transformation of Korean society, this article rather acknowledges its cultural uniqueness and utilizes it as the basis on which to construct a Korean non-liberal democracy that (...) is culturally pertinent and politically viable. First, this article critically re-examines the recent neo-Tocquevillian praise for social capital in light of Tocqueville’s original idea on the art of association, and reveals the liberal-individualistic assumption behind them, with which Confucian-Koreans are culturally unfamiliar. It presents a Korean version of Confucian civil society to promote democratic collective self-government and common citizenship, while rejecting modern Western moral individualism. (shrink)

In 2017, Korean crisis escalated as Donald Trump began “war of words” with DPRK’s chairman Kim Jong-un. Each threat both leaders made might eventually be understood by the other party as a declaration of war. Donald Trump wanted to “clean up the mess” left by previous US administrations and solve the problem of North Korean nuclear program. However, his actions were inconsistent: he threatened in a very North Korean way “total destruction” only to emphasize later that it (...) was not a “preferred option.” This article explores how “war of words” was a significant cause of the escalation of the Korean crisis. Ideological and political tensions have impeded paying attention to human rights violations against North Koreans. By describing the substantial connection between human rights and nuclear weapons issues in North Korea, this book urges a wide audience, including human rights activists, scholars, and educators, to show leadership in helping North Korean defectors seek freedom.

The purpose of this qualitative case study is to describe in-depth the experience of Korean students undergoing group music therapy. Seven students participated in eight consecutive weeks of group music therapy. The researcher collected and triangulated three data resources: individual interview transcripts, participant journals, and audiotaped sessions. The data were analyzed using the case study method and peer debriefing was conducted for trustworthiness. The four emergent themes and six categories were as follows: (1) Discovering who I am (categories: what (...) it means to be me, learning about self), (2) Inside group music therapy (categories: it was flowing like water, silence, I can do whatever I want safely here, and the truth of my family), (3) The role of music, and (4) What we learned with books became real. The results indicated that the student therapists’ experiences were linked to their personal development, unique experience of group music therapy dynamics, musical experience as an emotional container, and clinical development. Finally, it is recommended that cultural adaptations are made by providing both structure and space for Korean students to express themselves. (shrink)

Korean art and music have a long history, but aesthetic research on them has only been around for a little over a hundred years. Critiques and discourses on traditional arts such as poetry, calligraphy, and painting can be traced back to the Joseon or even Goryeo dynasties, but the modern discussion on the common features of Korean aesthetics was conducted much later than that in Western Europe, where the field of aesthetics was established in the mid to late (...) eighteenth century. Early aestheticists who tried to explain aesthetic consciousness in Korean culture and art converged on the concept of Jayeon, which can be translated provisionally as “nature,” seemingly diverging from western aesthetics’ focus on the concept of “beauty.” Jayeon shares the same Chinese characters as ziran, an early Daoist concept, but jayeon in a Korean aesthetic context does not appear to be limited to the connotation of its Chinese origin. This article unpacks the different ways in which jayeon captures the key characteristics of Korean art and aesthetics. (shrink)

The main purpose of this study was to validate a scale to examine the moral sensitivity of Korean nurses. A pre-existing scale, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (MSQ), developed by Lützén, was used after deletion of three items. The reliability and validity of the scale were examined by using Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis, respectively. According to the results, reliability of the scale was adequate but its construct validity was not fully supported. Through discussion on evidence of validity, five subconstructs (...) emerged. In particular, unlike the factor structure of the MSQ, two subconstructs, patient-oriented care and professional responsibility, were newly extracted. It was assumed that the other three MSQ subconstructs, conflict, meaning and benevolence (expressed as nurses being ethically good), would not be sensitive to cultural background. Given these findings, interpretations about the meaning of moral sensitivity of Korean nurses are discussed. (shrink)

This essay introduces two Korean women Confucian philosophers: Im Yun- jidang and Gang Jeongildang who lived in the latter period of the Joseon dynasty. Im Yunjidang was the first Confucian woman to explicitly claim women possessed an equal capacity to become sages as men. Gang Jeong- ildang made it clear that she was inspired by and sought to develop the thought of Im and added her own unique insights and new perspectives. Though they and their writings differ in many (...) ways, these two women philosophers created a lineage of female sages, marking a turning point in the history of Confucian philosophy. This paper aims to provide the his- torical background that shaped their thought and to introduce some of their writings in the hope of inspiring readers to study further the lives and philosophies of these two remarkable women and to take up and extend the insights they have left behind. This descriptive study was undertaken to identify the degree of ethical sensitivity of staff nurses and to analyze the differences in ethical sensitivity in terms of both general and ethics-related characteristics. Participants were 236 staff nurses working in general hospitals in Korea. Ethical sensitivity was measured by means of an instrument developed by the researchers. The results showed that the mean score for the degree of ethical sensitivity was 0.71 out of a possible maximum score of 1 (range 0.30 to (...) 0.97). For general characteristics, there was a significant difference in ethical sensitivity according to age (F (df 2233)-3.99, P-0.02). For characteristics related to ethics, there was a significant difference in ethical sensitivity according to attitude towards the nursing profession (F (df 4231)-2.94, P-0.03). It is therefore recommended that a training program reflecting these variables be developed to enhance staff nurses’ ethical sensitivity. (shrink)

In this article, it is argued that the reason why Korean women’s theology could not be systematically established lies in the deeply rooted misogyny in society and church. Thus, the issue of misogyny was considered from the perspective of womanism in terms of the performative language that carries out misogyny. This was designed to find a way to overcome the problem of misogyny in society. The socialisation and practice of misogyny becomes effective through language, which creates social values and (...) systemic institutions, thus creating a language-society. Therefore, this article proposes to look at misogyny, which is the basis of discrimination against women, in terms of the performative language. In addition, methods to overcome the problem of misogyny and to establish a constructive theology of women are presented through the performative language.Contribution: A study on ‘misogyny-language’, a mechanism of discrimination and oppression against women, reveals that social structures, systems and institutions are the result of the performative language and will help to overcome the problem of misogyny. In addition, it will contribute to the promotion of women’s theology and women’s rights around the world. (shrink)

The current study presents the findings of an empirical inquiry into the effects of Confucian ethics and collectivism, on individual whistleblowing intentions. Confucian Ethics and Individualism–Collectivism were measured in a questionnaire completed by 343 public officials in South Korea. This study found that Confucian ethics had significant but mixed effects on whistleblowing intentions. The affection between father and son had a negative effect on internal and external whistleblowing intentions, while the distinction between the roles of husband and wife had a (...) positive effect on those intentions. The effects of collectivism were also different depending on the specific types of collectivism. Horizontal collectivism had a positive effect on both types of whistleblowing intentions, whereas vertical collectivism did not show any significant effects on whistleblowing intentions. These results indicate that cultural traits such as Confucian ethics and collectivism may affect an individual’s whistleblowing intentions in degree and direction, making blanket predictions about cultural effects on whistleblowing difficult. Focusing on the works of Theodor W. Adorno, Walter Benjamin, and particularly Werner Hamacher, this essay seeks to develop an understanding of “survival” as the medial condition of linguistic structures. In the course of the past century and beyond, the term “survival” has repeatedly been deployed in discussions around the ontological status of linguistic entities. Most prominently, Benjamin finds in “survival” the essence of what he calls “translatability.” He decidedly puts the term in quotations marks to signal its linguistic nature, (...) which prompts Hamacher to speak of “survival in citation.” This article thus attempts to demonstrate that the term “survival” is not reducible to its biological or phenomenal implications, and reintroduces it as the fundamental concept of a renewed understanding of philology. In three sections, the essay discusses linguistic technification, translation, and irony as three modes that bring the survival of language to the fore. (shrink)

Aesthetics is not a subject usually associated with North Korea in Western scholarship, the usual tropes being autocracy, counterfeiting, drugs, human-rights abuse, famine, nuclear weapons, party-military dictatorship, Stalinism, and totalitarianism. Where the arts are concerned, they are typically seen as crude political propaganda. This paper investigates why some legislators tend to switch parties frequently while others tend to stay put. On the assumption that the ultimate goal of legislators is to be reelected, I argue that voters' demands for local/individual benefits, or pork, and legislators' lack of access to resources for such benefits are likely to lead the legislators to switch parties in order to improve their electoral chances in the subsequent election. By analyzing party switches by legislators from 1988 to 2008 in (...) South Korea, where the president controls access to the pork pipeline, I find that the president's party members are less likely and independents are more likely to change party affiliations, irrespective of voter demands for pork or national public policies. However, I also find that opposition party legislators who are elected from less-developed districts, where voters tend to desire pork over policy, are more likely to switch parties than those elected from more-developed districts. These findings suggest that interaction between voter demands and party access to resources influences politicians’ party loyalty: voter demands for pork (or policy) tend to lead politicians to be less (or more) loyal to their current parties. Voter demands, however, have little impact on the party loyalty of those who are already in parties with access to the pork pipeline. (shrink)

During the Asian and Pacific War, the Japanese government mobilized approximately 200,000 Asian women to military brothels to sexually serve Japanese soldiers. The majority of these victims were unmarried young women from Korea, Japan’s colony at that time. In the early 1990s, Korean feminist leaders helped more than 200 Korean survivors of Japanese military sexual slavery to come forward to tell the truth, which has further accelerated the redress movement for the women. One major issue in the redress (...) movement and research relating to the so-called “comfort women” issue is whether Japan’s colonization of Korea or gender hierarchy was a more fundamental cause of the Korean women’s suffering. Using an intersectional perspective, this article analyzes how colonial power, gender hierarchy, and class were inseparably tied together to make the victims’ lives miserable. By doing so, it shows that a one-sided emphasis on colonization or gender hierarchy will misrepresent the feminist political issue and misinterpret the “comfort women’s” experiences. (shrink)

Although Korean society has begun to seek a way of utilizing advance directives, there is not much known about the factors influencing the average Korean person’s preference toward advance directives. The purpose of this study was to examine factors, in addition to demographic variables, influencing preferences regarding advance directives. These include: to what extent people’s awareness of advance directives, preferences of extending their life at the end of life, experience of illness and medical care, and family functioning independently (...) influence the preferences toward advance directives. The participants were 382 community-dwelling Korean people. The data analysis was performed using hierarchical multiple logistic regression analysis. The findings showed that a majority of Korean people had a positive preference on advance directives and the factors influencing their preferences for advance directives were the preferences against the use of life-sustaining treatment at the end of life, a good self-rated heath status, and an unsatisfactory family functioning. Various scholars have argued that the rise of modern information technology over the past century has coincided with a steady decline of traditional methods of learning and interpretation, and has contributed to the general sense of “worldlessness” or anomie. In the words of Paul Ricoeur, “we are overwhelmed by a flood of words, by polemics, by the assault of the virtual, which today create a kind of opaque zone.” Philology, the ancient discipline that grew in the past two centuries (...) to encompass literary study, linguistics, and intellectual history, was originally conceived as a return to the past with the aim of retrieving the knowledge of bygone times. While the recent revival of interest in philology recognizes its importance to the humanities, it remains unnamed as such. The aim of my exploration of the history and practices of philology is to suggest how it can reinstate the presence of the past. With its attentiveness to language—undertaken in the silent spaces of private study, archive, and library—philology not only confirms the presence of the dead but also enacts a more fundamental return to “world.”. 한역(漢譯) 불전을 우리말로 번역할 때, 독음이 동일하여 중첩적인 동음이의 음역어가 발생하는 사례가 적지 않다. 예컨대 ‘나라, 다라, 마라, 바가, 바라, 바사, 반나, 발리, 발타, 발타라, 사라, 사리, 사타, 사파, 수라, 시라, 시파, 타라, 파나, 파라, 파리’ 등은 매우 다양하고 중첩적인 음역 용례를 보여 주고 있다. 여기서는 그러한 음역 예 중에서 ‘가라’만을 선택하여 분석하였다. 특히 동음이의 음역어가 야기하는 의미 체계에서의 난맥상이 어느 정도인지를 다각도로 분석하고, 그 해결 방안으로서 다음 네 가지를 제시했다. 첫째, 이중번역으로 인해서 발생할 수밖에 없는 동음이의어의 경우에는 음역어를 최소한으로 (...) 줄이고자 하는 노력이 필요하다. 둘째, 누역(累譯)의 경우에는 다양한 판본들을 비교 분석한 뒤에 용어를 최대한 통일시키는 작업이 긴요하다. 셋째, 동음이의 음역어의 경우에 중첩적인 의미들을 구분하기 위해서는 해당 원전 또는 한역본에는 없는 단어일지라도 문맥에 따라서 그 의미를 한정시키고 보충하는 말을 첨가할 필요가 있다. 넷째, 축역으로 인한 동음이의어의 경우에는 원음을 복원시켜서 번역함으로써 의미의 혼동을 방지할 수 있을 것이다. 특히 이 점은 원전을 반영함으로써 한역 불전의 용어를 간명하게 하고 동시에 의미의 명료성을 높이는 데에도 적잖은 역할을 할 것이다. 이 글은 한국사회에서 발생하고 있는 인종 편견 사례를 통해 그것의 발생원인과 그 특성들을 유형별로 소개하고 해명하는 데 목적이 있다. 먼저, 한국사회가 다문화사회로 진입하면서 다양하게 발생하고 있는 인종 편견 사례를 살펴보기 전에, 그 예비적 고찰로서 인종 개념과 인종 편견 개념에 대해 검토함으로써, 이러한 개념 속에 내재되어 있는 본질적 의미를 해명해 보고자 한다. 다음으로, 한국사회에 만연해 있는 인종 편견의 발생 원인과 그 사례를 몇 가지로 구분하여 간략히 살펴보고자 한다. 이는 역사적인 맥락에서 한국사회에 내재되어 있는 우월의식이 어떻게 형성되었으며, 또한 그것이 현재 한국사회의 인종 (...) 편견의 발생원인 중의 하나가 되고 있음을 해명하기 위한 것이다. 이어서, 한국사회에서 발생하고 있는 인종 편견 사례를 구체적으로 소개하면서 그 유형을 크게 네 가지 요인, 즉 생물학적-유전학적 요인, 사회적-역사적 요인, 종교적-문화적 요인, 경제적 요인으로 구분하면서, 이들 네 가지 요인에 따른 인종 편견의 특징을 밝혀보고자 한다. 끝으로, 결론에서는 이상의 내용을 근거로 하여 한국사회에서 발생하고 있는 인종 편견이나 인종 차별과 같은 갈등 문제를 해소할 수 있는 몇 가지 개선 방안을 제시하면서 본 논의를 맺고자 한다. 본고의 주된 목적은 크게 두 가지다. 하나는 (1) 찰스 테일러(Charles Taylor, 1931～) 윤리사상의 배경과 핵심 내용을 간략하게 정리하여 소개함으로써 그것이 서구 현대인의 실존적 위기에 일정한 대안을 제시하고 있음을 보여주는 것이며, 다른 하나는 (2) 시론적인 수준에서 그의 사상이 서구 개인들뿐만 아니라 현대 한국인의 윤리적 삶에도 도움이 될 수 있음을 밝히는 것이다. 구체적으로 여기서 말하는 ‘테일러 윤리사상’은 캐나다의 철학자 ‘찰스 테일러의 인간 본성에 관한 이해와 그에 기초한 도덕적 이상’을 뜻한다. 테일러는 근대 문화의 주요한 속성을 내포한 근대 윤리학은 행위자로서 인간의 본성을 제대로 파악하지 (...) 못한 채, 현실과 크게 괴리된 도덕적 이상을 내세워왔다고 진단한다. 즉 그는 우리가 현실 삶에서 겪게 되는 실제적 혹은 도덕적 곤란과 위기 속에서 해답을 찾을 수 있게끔 돕는 ‘실천학으로서 윤리학’이 재정립되어야 함을 암시한다. 테일러에 따르면, 근대 문화에는 ‘정신-신체’의 분리, ‘행위자-세계’의 분리, ‘개인-공동체’의 분리 등 주요한 세 가지 분리가 있다. 그리고 이것에 기초한 근대 윤리학자들의 이론과 사상은 오늘날 서구 개인들이 실존적 위기를 겪게 한 주범이다. 이에 따라 그는 근대 윤리학의 한계를 극복하기 위한 일종의 처방으로서, 특정한 분리의 양식을 ‘통합’하고자 애쓴다. 요컨대, 그는 ‘정신-행위자-개인’과 ‘신체-세계-공동체’ 간의 변증법적인 통합체로서 인간 행위자의 이해와 그에 따른 도덕적 이상을 그리고 있다. 30여년의 시간 동안 일관된 관점에서 확립된 테일러의 윤리사상은 서구 사회의 근대성(modernity) 확립에 대한 비판적 검토와 철학적 반성, 그리고 그 오류를 극복하려는 노력의 총체라는 점에서 서양 윤리학사에서 중요한 의미를 가질 수 있다. 또한 그렇기 때문에 테일러의 사상은 오늘날 우리 사회에서도 지속적으로 연구될 가치가 있다. 테일러가 강조하는 ‘통합체로서의 인간 행위자’가 비단 서구 현대인만을 가리키는 것은 아니기 때문이다. 즉, 그의 윤리사상이 서구 개인들의 실존적 위기를 극복하는 데 설득력을 가진다는 점을 받아들인다면, 실제로 그것은 오늘날 우리 한국인이 바람직한 삶을 향유하는 데에 도움이 될 수 있다. 그러므로 테일러의 메시지를 제대로 더 검토하고, 우리식으로 재해석하여 받아들일 필요가 있다. Based on in-depth interviews with 18 Korean immigrant working couples, this study explores Korean immigrant working wives' ongoing challenge to male dominance at home and to the unequal division of family work. A main factor in wives' being less obedient to their husbands is their psychological resources such as pride, competence, and honor, which they gain from awareness of their contribution to the family economy. Under immigrant family circumstances in which working for family survival is prioritized, wives feel (...) that their negligence of family work, rejection of the superwoman ideal, and perceived right to demand their husbands' help with family work is legitimized. However, Confucian patriarchal beliefs lead these wives to place limits on the degree of challenge. The findings highlight the interplay of wives' psychological resources, gender norms, and the social standing of being immigrant families in affecting wives' challenge to gender inequality at home. Differences in effects among Korean immigrant families are explored. (shrink)

[Author's note: although this paper is written in Korean, it is archived here in the hope of bringing it to the attention of a wider audience including scholars of pragmatics and of Korean linguistics.] Recently, Korean linguists and philosophers of language have engaged in discussions on the meaning and usage of the Korean determiner ‘uri’ as in such phrases as ‘uri manura [our wife]’ which might seem strange given the monogamous marital institution of Korea. The aim (...) of this paper is to provide a new interpretation of such expressions as ‘uri manura’. To that end, various proposals concerning the meaning and usage of the determiner ‘uri’ in those expressions will be critically examined first. Then it will be argued that ‘uri manura’ is a polite form of ‘nae manura [my wife]’ and is used when one needs, or wants, to speak in a polite tone in deference to the hearer or the wider audience. The upshot will be that the ubiquitous use of ‘uri’ in Korean is not due to the collectivist nature of the Korean society, as has often been claimed, but rather results from the linguistic embodiment of the Confucian tradition in Korea that values courteous words and behavior. Background: In the changing medical environment, professional stress continuously increases as the individual’s quality of life suffers. Of all the healthcare professions, nursing is especially prone to burnout, compassion fatigue and reduced compassion satisfaction, due to the tensions resulting from the physical and psychological stress of caring for extremely ill patients. Objectives: This study examined the professional quality of life of clinical nurses in Korea and the relationship between their experiences in ethical dilemmas and professional values. Methods: This was a (...) cross-sectional study of a convenience sample consisting of 488 clinical nurses. We used four questionnaires to measure the participants’ demographic characteristics, experiences in ethical dilemmas, professional nursing values and professional quality of life (ProQOL assessment, Version 5). Ethical considerations: This study received approval from the Institutional Review Board of Bronco Memorial Hospital. Written informed consent was given by all participants. Results: The nurses’ professional quality of life was affected by ethical dilemmas and professional nursing values. The factors influencing compassion satisfaction were age, client domain of ethical dilemmas, social awareness, professionalism of nursing and the roles of nursing services in professional values. The factors influencing burnout were marital status (married), religion (yes), human life domain, professional work domain of ethical dilemmas, social awareness and the role of nursing services in nursing professional values. The factors influencing secondary traumatic stress were human life domain, client domain and the professional work domain of ethical dilemmas. Conclusion: Intervention to help nurses increase their professional quality of life will have a greater chance of success if they are based on the nurses’ values and beliefs about the ethical dilemmas they face and foster the establishment of positive professional values. 이 글은 도원(道原) 류승국(柳承國, 1923∼2011)의 사상적 지향과 한국사상사의 해석방법론이 정역의 원리와 가치관을 기반으로 이루어진 것임을 고찰한 것이다. 도원은 그의 학문적 화두가 ‘화해와 상생, 인도주의와 세계평화에 있으며, 궁극적으로 대동세계를 구현하는데 있다’고 밝히며, 한국사상사 탐구를 통해 그에 대한 답을 찾는다. 그에 따르면 한국사상은 인간주체를 기본으로 하는 사상이며, 모든 갈등과 대립을 지양할 수 있는 중용(中庸), 중화(中和)의 요소를 지니고 있는데, 한국의 역학이 바로 이러한 내용을 충족한다. 도원은 한국사상이 ‘억음존양(抑陰尊陽)’의 주역적 가치가 아니라 ‘조양율음(調陽律陰)’의 정역적 가치를 추구하며, 인간의 절대주체를 통해 양극을 화합하는 ‘중(中)’사상이 고대점복행위로부터 구한말 『정역』에 (...) 이르기까지 일관한다고 보았다. 성숙한 인도주의와 음양의 양극을 종합해 생명을 살리는 ‘호생지덕(好生之德)’의 인(仁)은 상호 밀접한 관계에 있는 것으로 도원의 한국사상사연구의 핵심적 개념이다. ‘양극을 종합해 생명을 살리는 인간성숙’의 정신이 한국사상의 본령이라고 본다. 도원에 따르면 유교 인도주의의 핵심용어인 ‘인(人)’‘인(仁)’이 동이(東夷)에서 연원하였음이 갑골을 통해 고증되며, 동이족 수골복사(獸骨卜辭)의 음양사상과 인도주의의 사상적 연관성의 실제를 순(舜)임금을 통해 볼 수 있다. 그는 단군신화의 요점을 천지를 아우르는 중(中)사상과 홍익인간의 이념으로 해명하고, 최치원의 풍류도에서 인(仁)을 매개로 유불도 삼교의 이질성을 재창조하는 ‘접화군생(接化群生)’의 인본주의를 읽어낸다. 신라의 불교는 성(聖)과 속(俗)의 양극성을 일원화하고, 유(有)와 공(空)의 대립을 원융한다고 본다. 조선 성리학에서 양극의 통합양상을 살펴보면, 퇴계의 경우 태극이 마음의 ‘인극(人極)’으로 전환됨으로써 자아의 인격과 생명의 주체성으로 거듭난다는 것이다. 율곡의 이기지묘(理氣之妙)와 동학의 인내천(人乃天) 사상이 모두 양극성을 지양한 인도주의로서 한국사상은 상고대로부터 근대에 이르기까지 그 원형적 사고가 그 시대적 특수성 속에서도 보편성을 지니며 관통해 온 것으로 본다. 그 대미가 『정역』이다. 『정역』의 새로운 괘도가 지향하는 조양율음(調陽律陰)의 가치, 지인(至人) 및 황극(皇極)사상을 통해 드러나는 성숙한 인도주의가 그것이다. 한국사상의 인도주의는 『정역』에 이르러 확연하게 그 정체(正體)를 드러내며, 이는 역(逆)으로 한국사상사 전체를 조명할 수 있는 키워드로 기능한다. 도원의 사상전반을 꿰뚫고 있는 핵심정신은 바로 『정역』의 중심축인 ‘생명·평화의 성숙한 인도주의’와 ‘조양율음’의 원리로서 『정역』은 한국사상의 결정(結晶)이라 할 수 있다. As the Byzantinist Ihor Ševčenko once observed, "Philology is constituting and interpreting the texts that have come down to us. It is a narrow thing, but without it nothing else is possible." This definition accords with Saussure's succinct description of the mission of philology: "especially to correct, interpret, and comment upon the texts." Philology is not just a grand etymological or lexicographical enterprise. It also involves restoring to works as much of their original life and nuances as (...) we can manage. To read the written records of bygone civilizations correctly requires knowledge of cultural history in a broad sense: of folklore, legends, laws, and customs. Philology also encompasses the forms in which texts express their messages, and thus it includes stylistics, metrics, and similar studies. _On Philology _brings together the papers delivered at a 1988 conference at Harvard University's Center for Literary and Cultural Studies. The topic "What is Philology?" drew an interdisciplinary audience whose main fields of research ran the gamut from ancient Indo-European languages to African-American literature, signaling a certain sense of urgency about a seemingly narrow subject. These papers reveal that the role of philology is more important than ever. At a time when literature in printed form has taken a back seat to television, film, and music, it is crucial that scholars be able to articulate why students and colleagues should care about the books with which they work. Just as knowledge will be lost if philological standards decline, so too will fields of study die if their representatives cannot find meaning for today's readers. _On Philology _will be of interest not only to students of philology but also to anyone working in the fields of hermeneutics, literature, and communication. In medieval studies, philology is the matrix out of which all else springs. So we scarcely need to justify the choice of philology as a topic for the special forum to which Speculum, in a historic move, has opened its pages. On the other hand, if philology is so central to our discipline, why should one postulate a “new” philology, however ironically? While each contributor answers this question in a different, though complementary, way, the consensus seems (...) to be that medieval philology has been marginalized by contemporary cognitive methodologies, on the one side, while within the discipline itself, a very limited and by now grossly anachronistic conception of it remains far too current. This version, formulated under the impulse of political nationalism and scientific positivism during the second half of the nineteenth century, continues to circumscribe the “discipline” of medieval studies. The forum presented here undertakes to explore and interrogate presuppositions underlying current philological practices. (shrink)

This study examines the participation and interaction of relevant individuals in the process of developing an accounting standard for South Korea’s emission trading scheme (ETS). Despite the enormous accounting implications of such schemes, there is a paucity of research on the development and application of ETS accounting. Ulrich Beck’s and Anthony Giddens’s risk society framework is utilised to scrutinise the process of setting accounting standards—from the agenda-setting stage all the way to the final publication of the standard. In this case (...) study, we take an interpretive approach in analysing the rich data collected through face-to-face interviews with prominent standard-setters, accounting experts and representatives of industry and government. Participant observation and relevant documents were also considered. The findings highlight the political nature of accounting standard-setting and identify the risks and responsibilities of the key agents in the process along with the means of sub-political action taken to influence decisions. We reveal that the agents involved in standard-setting attempted to balance their anthropocentric priorities with ecocentric responsibilities and prioritised the production of a standard with minimal impact on economic, reputational, and operational risk. Having authority as a standard-setter, referring frequently to precedents and, perhaps most importantly, engaging actively with the stakeholders throughout the process seem to have contributed to a widely accepted standard, which can serve as a benchmark for future attempts to factor in ETSs.
