This volume - the first project of its kind in the field - collates c. 1200 biographical entries on Greek sophists and rhetors who flourished in the Roman Empire from the first to the seventh century AD. Ancient Greek sophists, the masters of speech and teachers of rhetoric, constituted one of the most important and interesting intellectual circles of the ancient world. The prosopography provides comprehensive information on sophists and their activities, using abundant and varied source material such as (...) literary texts (including those of the rhetors themselves) and papyrological, epigraphic, and numismatic evidence. Each entry provides data (where available) on sources in which the person is attested, biographical details, career, and rhetorical activity. This book constitutes a basis and a tool for subsequent in-depth studies on the Greek Sophistic movement, as well as a useful reference book for students and all those interested in the culture of the ancient world. Prosopography is the collection of all known information about individuals within a given period. With the advent of computer technology it is now possible to gather and store such information in increasingly sophisticated and searchable databases, which can bring a new dimension to traditional historical research. The book surveys the transition in prosopographical research from more traditional methods to the new technology, and discusses the central role of the British Academy, as well as that of French, German and Austrian (...) academic institutions, in developing prosopographical research on the Later Roman Empire, Byzantium and now Anglo-Saxon and other periods. The book demonstrates mutual benefits and complementarity in such studies between the use of new technology and the highest standards of traditional scholarship, and in doing so it sets forth new perspectives and methodologies for future work. In ungewöhnlich schneller Folge erschienen die beiden letzten Bände der ersten Reihe dieses für die byzantinische Prosopographie unentbehrlichen Instrumentum studiorum; folgen sollen noch Addenda, Corrigenda und Register. Dieses Jahr war aber auch insofern bedeutsam, als im April 2001 das britische Parallelunternehmen mit der Veröffentlichung einer CD “Prosopography of the Byzantine Empire (PBE) I” seinen Abschluß fand, wodurch sich für Benutzer und Rezensenten die reizvolle Aufgabe des Vergleichs eröffnet. Zwar haben sowohl Martindale (besonders in den Prolegomena zur PMBZ 1998, 304–7) (...) als auch Lilie (zuletzt in den Pré-Actes des 20. internationalen Byzantinistenkongresses, Paris 2001, 1. Séances pléniéres, 417f.) die wesentlichen Unterschiede bereits hervorgehoben, doch werden sich im folgenden von der Warte des außenstehenden Nichtmitarbeiters aus so manche Beobachtungen ergeben. Festzuhalten ist jedenfalls, daß im hier zu rezensierenden Werk wesentlich mehr Quellen – besonders hagiographische, aber auch sigillographische, epigraphische u.a. – ausgewertet wurden. Allerdings dürfte die Bilanz für die CD etwas günstiger als die von Lilie angenommenen zwei Drittel des Namensbestandes der Buchausgabe ausfallen, wenn man die ungleich stärkere Aufnahme von Anonymi (2149 gegenüber 940) sowie von einigen Hundert Personen in Rechnung stellt, die bereits in der PLRE vorkommen (aus Siegeln) bzw. nach Zeit (zu frühe Inschriften) oder Echtheit (fiktive Namen der Hagiographie) höchst fragwürdig erscheinen. Im übrigen wird abzuwarten sein, inwieweit Indices das oftmals mühsame Nachschlagen in der PMBZ erleichtern und eine Konkurrenz zu den ausgezeichneten Suchmöglichkeiten der englischen CD darstellen können. Nun liegt dieses große prosopographische Werk in erstaunlich kurzer Zeit abgeschlossen vor. Noch weit mehr als bei der PLRE (geringere Personenzahl) und dem PLP (zwar viel größere Personenzahl, jedoch oft leichtere Auffindbarkeit durch differenzierende Familiennamen) bedurfte dieses Instrumentum studiorum einer Aufschlüsselung durch umfassende Register. Wie beim PLP ist auch hier passenderweise auf den Seiten 7–84 ein vollständiges, erneuertes Abkürzungsverzeichnis vorangestellt (Quellen, Sekundärliteratur und Zeitschriftensiglen). Darauf folgen sehr willkommene Addenda und Corrigenda (S. 85–134), in die erfreulicherweise auch so manches aus meinen (...) ausführlichen Rezensionen (in BZ 92–94) eingeflossen ist. Der Hauptteil des Bandes mit den Indices (angeführt werden die Nummern und Namen der in der PMBZ behandelten Personen) wird eingeleitet durch eine Auflistung sämtlicher (sinnvoller) Namensvarianten, Familiennamen und Beinamen (S. 143–166). Danach folgt ein eher unerwartetes, vermutlich auch nicht sonderlich wichtiges Verzeichnis der Quellenstellen (S. 167–215, hier werden nur die Nummern angeführt). Als sicherlich bedeutendstes Register ist das der Titel und Berufe zu betrachten, durch das ja erst umfassende Studien zur Verwaltungs-, Wirtschafts-, Sozialgeschichte usw. ermöglicht werden bzw. erhebliche Erleichterung erfahren. Den Abschluß bilden – auch hier folgt die PMBZ dem Vorbild des PLP – die geographischen und topographischen Namen, deren Auflistung im Rahmen einer Prosopographie ja nicht unbedingt zu erwarten ist. Sont ici publiés trois décrets de la cité de Kyténion, ainsi qu'une série d'épitaphes de la Doride de Grèce Centrale. Les uns, inscrits sur une exèdre d'un type courant, peuvent, malgré leur forme abrégée, être datés de ca 150 av. J.-C, grâce à des recoupements prosographiques en Locride Ozole et en Doride. L'intérêt principal des autres est de livrer les premiers témoignages d'écriture de cette région. L'ensemble de ces textes donne de nouvelles attestations de noms rares et celles de quelques (...) noms nouveaux. La prosopographie des Doriens de la Métropole compte 243 numéros. (shrink)

In _Platonici minores_ Marie-Luise Lakmann offers a collection of all “minor” Platonists considered to be “Middle Platonists”. A prosopography presents all known facts about their life and teaching, followed by a collection of fragments and _testimonia_, accompanied by a German translation.

In this study we examine the information in the sources concerning the Byzantine family of Opoi in the eleventh and twelfth centuries. According to the sources, the Opoi were an important family in that period. Although they did not belong to the major aristocratic families, many of them were distinguished in the military administration of the Empire, such as Constantine Opos during the reign of Romanos III Argyros and Michael IV Paphlagon , the homonymous officer of Alexios I Komnenos , (...) the megas hetaireiarches Opos under John II Komnenos and Constantine Opos under Manuel I Komnenos. Michael and Niketas Choniates, significant figures of letters of the second half of the twelfth and the early thirteenth century, were closely related to the Belissariotai, a noble family of the Byzantine aristocracy. Thanks to both Choniatai brothers we are able to gather valuable information about the Belissariotai and to examine not only their role in the administration of the state during the last quarter of the twelfth century, but also their unbreakable bonds of friendship and kinship with the Choniatai. This paper aims to present a thorough prosopographic study on the Belissariotai family through the examination of literary and sigillographic evidence and to challenge a series of long-established views regarding the different stages of their life and career.
