When Moral Tension Begets Cognitive Dissonance: An Investigation of Responses to Unethical Pro-Organizational Behavior and the Contingent Effect of Construal Level.Na Yang, Congcong Lin, Zhenyu Liao & Mei Xue - 2021 - Journal of Business Ethics 180 (1):339-353.
Research on unethical pro-organizational behavior has predominantly focused on its antecedents, while overlooking how engaging in such behavior might affect employees’ psychological experience and their downstream work behaviors. Integrating cognitive dissonance theory with the moral identity literature, we argue that engaging in UPB restricts moral identity internalization as a result of attempts to alleviate the cognitive dissonance about moral self-regard, which in turn translates into decreased organizational citizenship behavior and increased counterproductive workplace behavior. Moreover, employees’ construal level weakens these indirect (...)

  2. Dual Character Art Concepts.Shen-yi Liao, Aaron Meskin & Joshua Knobe - 2020 - Pacific Philosophical Quarterly 101 (1):102-128.
Our goal in this paper is to articulate a novel account of the ordinary concept ART. At the core of our account is the idea that a puzzle surrounding our thought and talk about art is best understood as just one instance of a far broader phenomenon. In particular, we claim that one can make progress on this puzzle by drawing on research from cognitive science on dual character concepts. Thus, we suggest that the very same sort of phenomenon that (...)

Moderating Effects of Social Value Orientation on the Effect of Social Influence in Prosocial Decisions.Zhenyu Wei, Zhiying Zhao & Yong Zheng - 2016 - Frontiers in Psychology 7:203388.
Prosocial behaviors are susceptible to individuals’ preferences regarding payoffs and social context. In the present study, we combined individual differences with social influence and attempted to discover the effect of social value orientation (SVO) and social influence on prosocial behavior in a trust game and a dictator game. Prosocial behavior in the trust game could be motivated by strategic considerations whereas individuals’ decisions in the dictator game could be associated with their social preference. In the trust game, prosocials were less (...)

    A Pseudomonas aeruginosa‐secreted protease modulates host intrinsic immune responses, but how?Zhenyu Cheng - 2016 - Bioessays 38 (11):1084-1092.
Recently, we found that the Pseudomonas aeruginosa type II secreted protease IV functions as a unique Arabidopsis innate immunity elicitor. The protease IV‐activated pathway involves G protein signaling and raises the question of how protease elicitation leads to the activation of G protein‐mediated signaling, because plants do not appear to have metazoan‐like G protein‐coupled receptors. Importantly, our data suggest that Arabidopsis has evolved a mechanism to detect the proteolytic activity of a pathogen‐encoded protease, supporting the host‐pathogen arms race model. In (...)

A New Explanation of the Order of Parts in the Laozi.Liao Mingchun & Li Cheng - 2017 - Contemporary Chinese Thought 48 (3):143-158.
EDITOR’S ABSTRACTThis paper argues that we cannot determine with certainty the sequence of the two parts of the Laozi text: “Way” and “Virtue”. These two parts were originally written independently by Lao Zi and in an uncertain chronological order. They originally circulated separately, and were later combined differently by various editors. Thus emerged the two Laozi versions: The one with “Way” preceding “Virtue” has dominated the transmission; the alternative order can be retrieved from recently discovered sources such as the Mawangdui (...)

Differential Evolution with Autonomous Selection of Mutation Strategies and Control Parameters and Its Application.Zhenyu Wang, Zijian Cao, Zhiqiang Du, Haowen Jia, Binhui Han, Feng Tian & Fuxi Liu - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-18.
The existing numerous adaptive variants of differential evolution have been improved the search ability of classic DE to certain extent. Nevertheless, those variants of DE do not obtain the promising performance in solving black box problems with unknown features, which is mainly because the adaptive rules of those variants are designed according to their designers’ cognition on the problem features. To enhance the optimization ability of DE in optimizing black box problems with unknown features, a differential evolution with autonomous selection (...)

Semantic Criticism: The “Westernization” of the Concepts in Ancient Chinese Philosophy—A Discussion of Yan Fu’s Theory of Qi.Zhenyu Zeng - 2011 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 6 (1):100-113.
Every philosophical mode has a unique conceptual system. Qi has consistently been a fundamental part of ancient Chinese philosophy, and its significance is obvious. Guided by the idea of re-evaluating all values, Yan Fu, who was deeply influenced by Western philosophy and logic, used reverse analogical interpretation to present a new explanation of the traditional Chinese concept of qi. Qi thus evolved into basic physical particles. Yan’s philosophical effort has great significance: The logical ambiguity that had haunted qi was overcome. (...)

Avicenna on representation: towards an existential-relational account of intentionality.Zhenyu Cai - forthcoming - British Journal for the History of Philosophy:1-20.
Many scholars consider Avicenna’s theory of cognitive forms a theory of representation, which raises two questions. First, why does a cognitive form represent a particular object instead of another? This issue is known as the determination problem. Second, what is the nature of intentionality of the cognitive form? This is known as the nature problem. This paper examines Avicenna’s theory of cognitive forms and focuses on how he would address the two problems. I argue that Avicenna offers a pluralistic approach (...)

Moral Brains: The Neuroscience of Morality.S. Matthew Liao (ed.) - 2016 - New York, US: Oxford University Press USA.
In the last fifteen years, there has been significant interest in studying the brain structures involved in moral judgments using novel techniques from neuroscience such as functional magnetic resonance imaging. Many people, including a number of philosophers, believe that results from neuroscience have the potential to settle seemingly intractable debates concerning the nature, practice, and reliability of moral judgments. This has led to a flurry of scientific and philosophical activities, resulting in the rapid growth of the new field of moral (...)

The ethics of using genetic engineering for sex selection.S. Liao - 2005 - Journal of Medical Ethics 31 (2):116-118.
It is quite likely that parents will soon be able to use genetic engineering to select the sex of their child by directly manipulating the sex of an embryo. Some might think that this method would be a more ethical method of sex selection than present technologies such as preimplantation genetic diagnosis because, unlike PGD, it does not need to create and destroy “wrong gendered” embryos. This paper argues that those who object to present technologies on the grounds that the (...)

Short- and Long-Run Influence of Education on Subjective Well-Being: The Role of Information and Communication Technology in China.Zhenyu Wang & Muhammad Tayyab Sohail - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Subjective well-being is defined as how happy and satisfied a person is in his life. To date, among the significant determinants of subjective well-being, national income is considered an important one. However, not much focus has been paid to other determinants of subjective well-being, such as education and information and communication technologies. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the short- and long-run impact of education and ICTs on subjective well-being in China over the period 1996–2020. To empirically investigate the nexus, (...)

Doing business: an obscure notion of the ethics of public associations in ordinary Chinese.Liao Shenbai - 2006 - Frontiers of Philosophy in China 1 (3):325-340.
Along with the notion of being a person (zuo ren 做人), the notion of doing business (zuo shi 做事) in ordinary Chinese is basically an over-all notion of the norms in the practical and associative activities, carrying typically obscure meanings on practice and association affairs in some external world. Ordinary Chinese not only distinguishes these two notions but also defines a dictionary order of them, with the affairs of the internal world prior to those of the external. The fact that (...)

A large number of modern communication technologies and sensing technologies are incorporated into the smart grid, which makes its structure unique. The centralized optimized dispatch method of traditional power grids is difficult to achieve effective dispatch of smart grids. Based on the analysis of power generation plan and maintenance plan optimization model, this paper establishes a smart grid power generation and maintenance collaborative optimization model with distributed renewable energy. The objective function of this collaborative optimization problem is the operating cost (...)

Health (care) and human rights: a fundamental conditions approach.S. Matthew Liao - 2016 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 37 (4):259-274.
Many international declarations state that human beings have a human right to health care. However, is there a human right to health care? What grounds this right, and who has the corresponding duties to promote this right? Elsewhere, I have argued that human beings have human rights to the fundamental conditions for pursuing a good life. Drawing on this fundamental conditions approach of human rights, I offer a novel way of grounding a human right to health care.

Advances in genomic technologies such as CRISPR‐Cas9, mitochondrial replacement techniques, and in vitro gametogenesis may soon give us more precise and efficient tools to have children with certain traits such as beauty, intelligence, and athleticism. In this paper, I propose a new approach to the ethics of reproductive genetic engineering, a human rights approach. This approach relies on two claims that have certain, independent plausibility: (a) human beings have equal moral status, and (b) human beings have human rights to the (...)

In “Genetic Privacy, Disease Prevention, and the Principle of Rescue,” Madison Kilbride argues that patients have a duty to warn biological family members about clinically actionable adverse genetic findings. The duty does not stem from the special obligations that we may have to family members, she argues, but rather follows from the principle of rescue, which she understands as the idea that one ought to prevent, reduce, or mitigate the risk of harm to another person when the expected harm is (...)

Mitochondrial replacement techniques, known in the popular media as 'three-parent' or 'three-person' IVFs, have the potential to enable women with mitochondrial diseases to have children who are genetically related to them but without such diseases. In the debate regarding whether MRTs should be made available, an issue that has garnered considerable attention is whether MRTs affect the characteristics of an existing individual or whether they result in the creation of a new individual, given that MRTs involve the genetic manipulation of (...)

Occupational stigmatization in Chinese healthcare institutions has intensified due to negative public events (e.g., kickbacks, bribes, and patient conflicts). While previous studies have mainly focused on the negative effects of stigma on practitioners’ physiological and psychological states of practitioners with low prestige, little attention has been given to the moral psychological mechanisms involved or the potential positive outcomes. This study aims to explore the moral mechanisms of healthcare professionals’ perceived occupational stigma on organizational citizenship behavior (OCB), with a specific focus (...)
