En los últimos años asistimos a un rebrote de las culturas públicas en torno al trauma sexual que no está necesariamente centrado en diagnósticos médicos ni en víctimas inocentes (Cvetkovich, 2018) sino, más bien, en las huellas del trauma en la experiencia cotidiana y las diversas maneras en que se lidia con ellas. En este trabajo nos enfocaremos en la novela gráfica de lx dibujantx no binarix transfeminista Femimutancia –seudónimo de Julia Inés Mamone o Jules– Banzai (2021). Nos interesa abordar (...) esta obra con referencias autobiográficas para hallar allí una respuesta afectiva y creativa al trauma depositaria de una agencia que no reniega del dolor y de la vergüenza, sino que se funda en ellos, afectos que le han dado históricamente vitalidad a las culturas queer (Cvetkovich, 2018). Daremos cuenta de la inherente fragilidad de esta agencia construida sobre ruinas. Asimismo, buscamos exponer las prácticas que rodean la producción y la recepción de esta historieta queer en sus esfuerzos por hacer público y generar una audiencia colectiva para el trauma disolviendo de esta manera la frontera entre la vida íntima, la respuesta afectiva privatizada (Cvetkovich, 2018) y la vida política, haciendo aflorar afectos visceralmente políticos. _Defenderse: Una filosofía de la violencia_ de Elsa Dorlin —profesora de filosofía política de París 8 actualmente dedicada al campo de los estudios decoloniales y de género— es un fantástico ensayo sobre la violencia donde la autora acomete una historia constelar de la autodefensa a través de un trabajo genealógico organizado en ocho capítulos precedidos por un prólogo. En este trabajo, la autora se preguntará cuál es el destino de nuestras resistencias en el contexto de técnicas de poder cuyo proverbio (...) es “Cuanto más te defiendas, más sufrirás y con seguridad, morirás”. Aún más, indagará y se preguntará qué le hace la violencia a nuestras vidas, a nuestros cuerpos y a nuestros músculos. Y ellos, a su vez, ¿qué pueden hacer y no hacer dentro de y a través de la violencia? (shrink)

En las últimas décadas la apropiación y construcción de archivos ha ido ganando terreno dentro de las prácticas artísticas, permitiendo visibilizar las políticas de archivo y los órdenes sociales a los que responden. Al mismo tiempo, han propuesto modos divergentes de activación de la memoria, problematizando creativamente las jerarquías y protocolos tradicionales, constituyéndose, así, en lo que podemos llamar estrategias anarchivísticas. Considerando que, en el seno de la cultura digital, la IA (Inteligencia Artificial) se ha vuelto clave en la gestión (...) de la información, el presente artículo se pregunta de qué manera la utilización artística de esta tecnología contribuye a ofrecer nuevos enfoques para pensar el archivo, el patrimonio y la memoria. Dentro de la madeja de prácticas existentes, jalaremos de dos hilos: 1) por un lado, las tácticas apropiacionistas que operan activando nuevas lecturas sobre archivos ya constituidos; 2) por otro, aquellas que proponen la construcción de archivos nuevos, generalmente abarcando elementos dispersos u otrora ignorados. Ahondaremos en estas tendencias centrándonos en dos casos que abordan específicamente el patrimonio fílmico –Jan Bot y Oráculo de Capturas de Pantalla– identificando sus estrategias y características. Yona Waksman, Véronique François Vers une redéfinition typologique et analytique des céramiques byzantines du type Zeuxippus Ware p. 629-724 La vaisselle de table du type Zeuxippus Ware fait a priori partie des catégories de céramiques byzantines les mieux connues. Très largement diffusée sur les territoires de l'Empire byzantin mais aussi dans toute la Méditerranée et en mer Noire, à la fin du XIIe siècle et au début du XIIIe, elle sert couramment de « marqueur » des niveaux archéologiques pour (...) cette époque. Ces dernières années, la multiplication des découvertes et les difficultés d'attribution au groupe initial ont montré les limites de la typologie établie en 1968 par A. H. S. Megaw. Aussi nous a-t-il semblé nécessaire de reconsidérer cet ensemble suivant le point de vue des analyses chimiques de la pâte permettant de rassembler sur des bases plus sûres des vases correspondant à une même production. Cette étude à grande échelle propose une mise au point sur la question en mettant en parallèle les caractéristiques typologiques et stylistiques et les compositions chimiques et minéralogiques des pâtes d'un large échantillonnage de Zeuxippus Ware et assimilées ainsi que des échantillons de productions locales associées sur des sites choisis à travers toute la Méditerranée et la mer Noire. A substantial body of experimental evidence has demonstrated that labels have an impact on infant categorization processes. Yet little is known regarding the nature of the mechanisms by which this effect is achieved. We distinguish between two competing accounts: supervised name‐based categorization and unsupervised feature‐based categorization. We describe a neurocomputational model of infant visual categorization, based on self‐organizing maps, that implements the unsupervised feature‐based approach. The model successfully reproduces experiments demonstrating the impact of labeling on infant visual categorization reported in (...) Plunkett, Hu, and Cohen (2008). It mimics infant behavior in both the familiarization and testing phases of the procedure, using a training regime that involves only single presentations of each stimulus and using just 24 participant networks per experiment. The model predicts that the observed behavior in infants is due to a transient form of learning that might lead to the emergence of hierarchically organized categorical structure and that the impact of labels on categorization is influenced by the perceived similarity and the sequence in which the objects are presented. The results suggest that early in development, say before 12 months old, labels need not act as invitations to form categories nor highlight the commonalities between objects, but they may play a more mundane but nevertheless powerful role as additional features that are processed in the same fashion as other features that characterize objects and object categories. 1000 time-travelers travel back in time, each with the intention of killing their own infant-self. If there is no branching time, then on pain of bringing about a logical contradiction, all must fail. But this seems inexplicable: what is to ensure that the time-travelers are stopped? For a time, this inexplicability objection was thought to provide evidence that there is something incoherent about the possibility of backwards time travel in a universe without branching time. There is now near-consensus, however, that (...) the objection has no bite: there is nothing inexplicable about the mass failure. Lewis, Sider and Ismael independently argue that since it is built into the description of the class of cases considered that the time-travelers must fail – and so we consider only unsuccessful attempts – there is no mystery. Smith argues that the absence of possible worlds at which auto-infanticide is committed suffices as a complete explanation for the failures. And Baron and Colyvan maintain that available causal and logical explanations jointly account for everything that needs accounting for. I argue that these are wrong. There is remaining, problematic inexplicability. For backwards time travel not to lead to logical contradiction, something would need to do logic’s bidding, after all. (shrink)

Is our moral cognition “colored” by the language(s) that we speak? Despite the centrality of language to political life and agency, limited attempts have been made thus far in contemporary political philosophy to consider this possibility. We therefore set out to explore the possible influence of linguistic relativity effects on political thinking in linguistically diverse societies. We begin by introducing the facts and fallacies of the “linguistic relativity” principle, and explore the various ways in which they “color,” often covertly, current (...) normative debates. To illustrate this, we focus on two key Rawlsian concepts: the original position and public reason. We then move to consider the resulting epistemic challenges and opportunities facing contemporary multilingual democratic societies in an age of increased mobility, arguing for the consequent imperative of developing political metalinguistic awareness and political extelligence among political scientists, political philosophers, and political actors alike in an irreducibly complex linguistic world. The study aimed at evaluating the extent to which the feedback related negativity, an ERP component associated with feedback processing, is related to learning in school-age children. Eighty typically developing children between the ages of 8 and 11 years completed a declarative learning task while their EEG was recorded. The study evaluated the predictive value of the FRN on learning retention as measured by accuracy on a follow-up test a day after the session. The FRN elicited by positive feedback was (...) found to be predictive of learning retention in children. The relationship between the FRN and learning was moderated by age. The P3a was also found to be associated with learning, such that larger P3a to negative feedback was associated with better learning retention in children. (shrink)

"Semantic Truth Theories" uses the techniques of mathematical logic to develop a new semantic treatment of the concept of truth based on ideas of Saul Kripke. Yael Cohen goes on to solve the Liar paradox, Hempel's raven paradox in the philosophy of science, and other classical problems of philosophy. She does this by enlarging the scope of formal logic to include concepts of presupposition besides the usual implication. The book thus provides a unified treatment of many topics having to (...) do with truth, topics whose deep and unsuspected interconnections are not visible without the insights of mathematical knowledge which the author elaborates. A Choice of Emblemes and other Devices est un livre d'emblèmes adapté et traduit en 1586 par Geffrey Whitney. Il s'agit du premier livre d'emblèmes connu de langue anglaise.Cet ouvrage, qui comporte d'abondantes adresses au lecteur, mérite notre attention pour au moins deux raisons. Tout d'abord, certains de ces emblèmes, dans leur dimension picturale, semblent rendre un écho intéressant à quelques passages de pièces shakespeariennes, comme si le Barde avait trouvé là de quoi nourrir, entre autres sources, son inspiration. Par (...) ailleurs, d'autres emblèmes mettent en scène la vie des petites gens, centre d'intérêt iconographique assez rare pour cette période.Enfin, certains emblèmes présentent la particularité d'associer une iconographie gréco-latine et chrétienne, selon un cadre sémantique néo-platonicien et cabbaliste chrétien. Le dialogue du texte de l'emblème et de l'image peut ainsi permettre d'élaborer une interprétation relative à des divinités ou des symboles obscurs.L'étude que nous proposons abordera, tout d'abord, cet ouvrage comme source supplémentaire d'inspiration poétique et métaphorique pour Shakespeare, avant de le considérer comme un livre des arts et métiers concernant les petites gens. "The question of complex systems is relatively new for critics today. Analyzing complex systems in Renaissance texts shows that the Christian kabbalistical concept of harmonia mundi led to an aesthetical development, reflecting the worldview of harmonious parallel worlds. Failure to perceive the esoteric text uniting apparently contradicting themes has often led Renaissance scholars to elaborate a theory of the instability of atmospheres characterizing the English Baroque. This article gives an example of a complex system in Shakespeare's Antony and Cleopatra revealing (...) that the Christian kabbalistical Hercules unifies contradicting metaphors and intertexts of the play, and reintegrates this work in a form of semantic stability more in harmony with the aesthetics of its time. In the case of postmodern literature, contradictory intertexts appear as a device to deconstruct all values and logic previously established. With the study of a text structured by the optical questions around the refraction of light, this paper shows that in the case of Nabokov, the unifying system of apparently contradicting semantic systems is the underlying logic of scientific theory. In Nabokov's text, failing to perceive the fundamental intertext of scientific debate leads one to assimilate Nabokov's writing to a form of postmodern deconstruction. Both cases studied tend to show a continuity of a form of aesthetics through different epistemological eras.". (shrink)

In 1967 Garfinkel and Bittner were investigating good organizational reasons for bad clinic records, demonstrating how the reading of such records as sociological data should be reported to the understanding of their production’s practical contingencies and to the situated circumstances of their use. This seminal paper opened new avenues of research related to the study of records in various professional contexts and of their transformation, to the development of praxiological approaches to practical and professional texts, or to the study of (...) historical documents and archives. To contribute to this ethnomethodological strand of research, I propose a case-study of artworks’ records management at the museum, investigated as a perspicuous site to reflect upon how artworks are experienced, apprehended and defined in the institutional ordinary business. Drawing on observations and materials collected at the French National Museum of Modern Art, I study records’ careers and describe their material and organizational properties, by giving a close look at some elements. More particularly, I focus on one distinctive property of some records: their thickness, investigated as a scheme of interpretation of the situated features of documentation work. By reading artworks’ records as local collective practices of assemblage, disruption and reconfiguration of pieces of documentation, I demonstrate that what is documented in this process is not only the artwork: it is also the collective work of working with artworks, dealt with as ongoing achievements of institutional practices. This study investigates employment of two elements having a lexical source involving comparison -, `like') which have greatly proliferated over the last decade or so in Israel, Hebrew Kaze and ke'ilu. Here I focus particularly on kaze and compare it to ke'ilu, which was investigated at length in Maschler. The data come from audio-recordings of casual conversations of college-educated Israelis with their friends and relatives. A qualitative analysis of talk-in-interaction reveals three functions for kaze: comparative demonstrative, hedge and quotative. A (...) quantitative perspective on the distribution of these functions is presented, and these qualitative and quantitative analyses lead to an examination of the functional itinerary of this word in Hebrew. The recent proliferation of kaze and ke'ilu in Israeli Hebrew discourse is then tied to the change from a culture in which dugri speech is central to one in which this speaking style is in decline. Normative theorizing in language involves a reflective consideration on the role that language plays in the shaping and reshaping of social and political orders. This is a complex endeavor resulting from the complex nature of the politics of language, in which change is constant and often unpredictable, and in which there exist an irreducible tension between linguistic and moral difference, on the one hand, and a need for societal interdependence on the other hand. The theoretical, conceptual, and methodological challenges emanating (...) from these realities suggest the usefulness of an adaptive approach to the normative theorizing of the political life of language. In this article, I maintain that Habermas, in his critical essay on Brandom included inTruth and Justification(2003), reduces communication to its narrowly dialogical form, and in doing so tends to ignore the fact that the discursive process is, above all, for Brandom, the product of a shared coordination of different individual perspectives contributing to advancing the game of giving and asking one another for reasons. On the one hand, I propose to carry out a critical analysis of Habermas’ position and, (...) on the other hand, to do justice to Brandom by emphasizing the specificity of the discursive communicative process. Japanese scholars in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries concentrated their efforts translating Western scientific books. Due to fact that only Dutch merchants were permitted to trade with Japan, mainly books in Dutch were introduced into Japan. Thus Dutch translations of books from England, Germany, France, Sweden and Italy were imported. Udagawa Youan was a member of a Japanese family of Chinese medicine doctors and Dutch translators. In the following chapters I outline his life, his vast scope of translations, and present (...) one of his translations, Kouso Seimika, “Chemistry of the Element of Light”: On light and heat reactions with substances, based on a paragraph of the Dutch edition of Antoine Lavoisier’s Traité Élémentaire de Chimie. Youan’s skills were shown in coining new terms in his largest book Seimi Kaiso for which more than twenty-five books of foreign authors are cited as origin for its translation. The wide range of knowledge transfer between scholars of different countries in Europe emphasizes its contrast with the isolation of translation work of the Japanese scholars. Flow of scientific knowledge from Europe to Japan in the nineteenth century is manifested. Udagawa Youan’s text Kouso Seimika explains the reactions of heat and light with matter, plants, animals and mankind as was understood in Lavoisier time. (shrink)

The topic of time is central to Levinas's philosophy. By examining aspects of the Biblical stories of Abraham and Moses compared with Greek myths, mainly that of Cronos devouring his children, this paper aims to show that Levinas's view of time, though certainly indebted to the Greek (i.e. philosophical) tradition, contains traces of Biblical experiences. Moreover, Levinas's interpretation of time will serve as a concrete demonstration of the way the Jewish experience enables Levinas to express his criticism of the philosophical‐Greek (...) tradition. The existence of “local implicatures” has been the topic of much recent debate. The purpose of this paper is to contribute to this debate by asking what we can learn from three puzzles, namely, the cancellation of such implicatures by or both, their behavior in the complement clauses of negative factive verbs such as sorry, and their behavior in root and embedded questions. Two basic approaches to local implicatures have been advanced: a fully pragmatic account in which local implicatures result (...) from conventional Gricean principles and a semantic account according to which the generation of implicatures is interwoven with compositional, grammatical mechanisms. We argue that the lesson to be learned from our three case studies is that some kind of approach along the latter, grammatical line is necessary to account for the data. (shrink)

Science education in elementary schools is not only concerned with numbers, formulas and laboratory experiments, but includes various phenomena that often occur in the surrounding environment so that it has an impact on increasing the development of science education in resolving conflicts in elementary schools. This study aims to analyze the publication of science education in primary schools' conflict resolution using VOSviewer with a publish or perish application with a range of publications for ten years (2013 to 2023). Based on (...) these criteria, there were 992 articles found into three areas that is Conflict Resolution, Science Education, and Primary School terms. The research results show that research has decreased significantly in the last 5 years, namely from 2013 to 2019 with a total of 205 articles down to 54 articles. From 2019 to 2022 there will be static for the publication of articles on this topic. A drastic decline has occurred in the last 2 years, namely from 2021 to 2022, with a total of 9. The latest data in 2023 saw an increase of 1 article to 10 published articles. So that it can be said that it was decreasing. Through VOSviewer, this study analyzes a lot of articles published related to the topic itself. The impact of this review becomes a reference for a starting point in conducting research on related topics in the future. (shrink)

It is argued, contra Beck and Rullmann (1999), and with Heim (1994), that the sources of strongly exhaustive interpretations and `de dicto' interpretations of wh-complements of veridical question-embedding verbs are one and the same. Beck and Rullmann's theory is shown to predict certain `de dicto' readings which do not exist, while a particular rendition of Heim's theory is shown to constrain the generation of `de dicto' readings in the correct way.
