The expulsion of the Lutherans from the Catholic Archbishopric of Salzburg and adjacent Berchtesgaden is a prominent example of early modern confessional migration. Until now, however, the liberal support these emigrants enjoyed from Jewish individuals and entire Jewish communities on their way to Brandenburg-Prussia and other Protestant territories has not yet received any scholarly attention of note. Based on contemporary sources, this article analyzes all known cases of Jews aiding these expellees. While anti-Jewish sentiments widely persisted among German Lutherans, pietist (...) theologians cultivated a mission-oriented philo-Judaism, interpreting the Jews' help for the emigrants as a harbinger of a lasting Jewish-Christian rapprochement. The Jews' support challenged classical anti-Jewish stereotypes by turning the traditional roles of Jews and Christians in pre-modern society upside down. (shrink)

Recently, Bengt Hansson presented a paper about dyadic deontic logic,2 criticizing some purely axiomatic systems of dyadic deontic logic and proposing three purely semantical systems of dyadic deontic logic which he confidently called dyadic standard systems of deontic logic (DSDL1–3). Here I shall discuss the third by far most interesting system DSDL3 which is operating with preference relations. First, I shall describe this semantical system (Sections 1.1–1.3). Then I shall give an axiomatic system (Section 1.4) which is proved to be (...) correct (Section 2) and complete (Section 3) with respect to Hansson's semantics. Finally, in face of these results Hansson's semantics will be discussed from a more intuitive standpoint. After emphasizing its intuitive attractiveness (Section 4.1) I will show that two objections often discussed in connection with preference relations do not apply to it (Section 4.2 and 4.3); more precisely, I will show that the connectedness condition for preference relations can be dropped and that, in a sense, it is not necessary to compare two possible worlds differing in infinitely many respects. (What exactly is meant by this, will become clear later on.) Yet there is a third objection to Hansson's semantics which points to a real intuitive inadequacy of DSDL3. A way of removing this inadequacy, which corresponds to Hansson's own intuitions as well as to familiar metaethical views, is suggested, but not technically realized (Section 4.4). In the last section (section 4.5) I shall briefly show that DSDL3 is decidable, as expected. (shrink)

We argue that Wittgenstein’s philosophical perspective on Gödel’s most famous theorem is even more radical than has commonly been assumed. Wittgenstein shows in detail that there is no way that the Gödelian construct of a string of signs could be assigned a useful function within (ordinary) mathematics. — The focus is on Appendix III to Part I of Remarks on the Foundations of Mathematics. The modalities come into the world by being projections or objectivizations of our epistemic constitution. Thus this paper is a statement of Humean projectivism. In fact, it goes beyond Simon Blackburn’s version. It is also designed as a comprehensive counter-program to David Lewis’ program of Humean supervenience. In detail, the paper explains: Already the basic fact that the world is a world of states of affairs is due to the nature of our epistemic states. Objects, which figure in states of (...) affairs and which embody metaphysical modality, are constitutable by their essential properties and in fact constituted by us according to our ontological policies. What the facts are, to which the correspondence notion of truth refers, is determined by applying an epistemic or pragmatic notion of truth to the world. Causation is a specific objectivization of our conditional beliefs. Nomicity is a ‘habit of belief’, a specific way of generalizing epistemic attitudes. This covers the basic metaphysical and natural modalities. The paper attempts to convey that talking of projection or objectivization is not just imagery, but a constructively realizable program. Wolfgang Ernst, Professor of Media Theories at the Humboldt University in Berlin, has become known through his work on media archaeology. Hence the inclusion of this translation represents an alternative take on cultural techniques. It places the legacy of cultural studies, or Kulturwissenschaften, in an interesting tension with the different epistemological demands that technical media impose. After Vico and Dilthey, argues Ernst, we need to investigate the specific modes of knowledge that technical media propose to cultural techniques. Ernst’s media (...) archaeology and the slightly different approach to cultural techniques found in some other contributions in this issue can be seen as two of the most intriguing ways in which current German media studies has been developing in relation to Friedrich Kittler’s impact. For Ernst, this has resulted in a more technical focus and also in the development of critiques of temporality that go beyond media history. Ernst argues that media temporality is not to be understood only through the cultural history of media technologies, but also how media technologies produce time. Machines have their own specific temporality, Eigenzeit. It is in this context that the article discusses the different approaches to cultural techniques, taking into consideration the specific time-critical and epistemic implications of technical media. Rudolf Carnap was born on May 18, 1891, and Hans Reichenbach on September 26 in the same year. They are two of the greatest philosophers of this century, and they are eminent representatives of what is perhaps the most powerful contemporary philosophical movement. Moreover, they founded the journal Erkenntnis. This is ample reason for presenting, on behalf of Erkenntnis, a collection of essays in honor of them and their philosophical work. I am less sure, however, whether it is a good (...) time for resuming their philosophical impact; their work still is rather part than historical basis of the present philosophical melting-pot. Their basic philosophical theses have currently, it may seem, not so high a standing, but their impact can be seen in numerous detailed issues; they have opened or pushed forward lively fields of research which are still very actively pursued not only within philosophy, but also in many neighboring disciplines. Whatever the present balance of opinions about their philosophical ideas, there is something even more basic in their philosophy than their tenets which is as fresh, as stimulating, as exemplary as ever. I have in mind their way of philosophizing, their conception of how to do philosophy. It is always a good time for reinforcing that conception; and if this volume would manage to do so, it would fully serve its purpose. (shrink)

The paper proposes to amend structuralism in mathematics by saying what places in a structure and thus mathematical objects are. They are the objects of the canonical system realizing a categorical structure, where that canonical system is a minimal system in a specific essentialistic sense. It would thus be a basic ontological axiom that such a canonical system always exists. This way of conceiving mathematical objects is underscored by a defense of an essentialistic version of Leibniz’ principle according to which (...) each object is uniquely characterized by its proper and possibly relational essence (where “proper” means “not referring to identity"). The article is devoted to the genesis of Hegel’s philosophy of nature. It shows us that the formation of the natural philosophical views of the German philosopher took place not only in a speculative way, in the critical reception of Schelling’s works, but, first of all and for the most part, was predetermined by Hegel’s own interest in natural science and acquaintance with some prominent scientists of that time. The focus of the paper is on the evolution of the first (...) part of Hegel’s natural philosophy: the doctrine of space and time as it presented in some excerpts from two revised lecture notes on the philosophy of nature, read by Hegel in the winter semester of 1821/1822 at the University of Berlin and published as an appendix to the article by Bonzipen. In his article, Bonzipen provides historical information on the fate of these texts, raises the question of their authorship, gives a general outline of Hegel’s thought, and also compares both texts with the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Philosophical Sciences. From his point of view, the revised notes allow partly to illustrate, partly to fill in some gaps in the dialectic of two forms of abstract appearance known on the basis of the Encyclopedia. Bonzipen notes that Hegel’s speculative consideration of space and time is complemented by a discussion with the history of philosophy and the history of mathematics. While reproaching traditional mathematics for being fixed on the quantitative aspect of reality, which does not allow to fully resolve the contradiction between space and time, Hegel at the same time refuses to attempt to build philosophical mathematics that focuses on the consideration of the qualitative certainty of the moments of space and time, declaring that although it is solvable, it is an extremely time-consuming task. This refusal becomes a turning point in the further development of the dialectical doctrine of space and time. (shrink)

Von Beginn an für tot erklärt, "spukt" das "Gespenst der Avantgarde" durch Kunst und Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Es hat grundsätzliche Fragen gestellt, die dieser Band diskutiert. Dazu gehört das immer wieder behauptete "Scheitern" der historischen Avantgarden, ihre Aufhebung in der Post-Avantgarde, gleichzeitig ihre (historische) Notwendigkeit, ihr Verhältnis zur Moderne und ihre zunehmende Vereinnahmung durch den Modernismus. Untersucht wird auch die (...) Bedeutung der Avantgarde für und ihre Infragestellung durch Prozesse gesellschaftlicher Ästhetisierung und ihre aktuellen Möglichkeiten und Erscheinungsformen in Kunst und Gesellschaft. So kommt nicht nur die heutige Situation von Avantgarde und Avantgarde-Forschung in den Blick, es sollen auch neue Perspektiven auf Kunst und Literatur des 20. Singer’s ‘Practical Ethics’ is based on a form of utilitarianism which takes into account the interests of a living being if and only if it displays a minimum of rationality and (self-)consciousness. Accordingly aborting a human fetus in an early stage of development is held to be morally acceptable, whereas killing chicken, pigs, and cattle for mere culinary pleasure is not. Singer's view on abortion are refuted because they only consider the actual properties of the fetus but ignore the quality (...) of its future life. In general the ‘principle of replaceability’ must be rejected. And although making animais suffer certainly is immoral, mere (painless) killing does not necessarily do so great a harm to them that we have to become vegetarians. (shrink)

Abstract The artwork of Joseph Beuys was provocative in his time. Although he was very successful on the international art scene and on the art market, the larger The public is still bewildered by his Fat Chair or his installations and his performances. The article shows the evolution of his artwork from classical materials (stone, steel) to soft materials (animals, products of animals) and further to his concept of “social sculpture” and to programmatic diagrams (with words and graphics). A special (...) point of interest is the transition towards language (phonic and conceptual), the philosophy of art exposed in his drawings, and diagrams and the relation between art and science in his artwork. L-effect algebras are introduced as a class of L-algebras which specialize to all known generalizations of effect algebras with a \-semilattice structure. Moreover, L-effect algebras X arise in connection with quantum sets and Frobenius algebras. The translates of X in the self-similar closure S form a covering, and the structure of X is shown to be equivalent to the compatibility of overlapping translates. A second characterization represents an L-effect algebra in the spirit of closed categories. As an application, it is (...) proved that every lattice effect algebra is an interval in a right \-group, the structure group of the corresponding L-algebra. A block theory for generalized lattice effect algebras, and the existence of a generalized OML as the subalgebra of sharp elements are derived from this description. (shrink)

"Mit den digitalen Medien haben sich neue Formen der Warenzirkulation auf der Grundlage sozialer Netzwerke etabliert, die unter dem Begriff Sharing Economy zusammen- gefasst werden. Die Durchsetzung dieser onlinebasierten Transaktionen ist von einem euphorischen Diskurs begleitet, der der Sharing Economy utopische Potenziale einer gemeinschaftlichen Mehrwerterzeugung zuschreibt. Wolfgang Sützls Beitrag betont, dass die rhetorische Wirkung des Teilens und dessen Idealisierung über den Tausch als eigentliche ökomische Form hinwegtäusche. Anhand von Gabentheorien zeigt er auf, wie das Teilen (durch die Leugnung der (...) Äquivalenzerwartungen) an seine Grenzen komme, indem es mit dem Geben verwechselt werde, und außerdem Wertschöpfungsprozesse von Unternehmen sowie die Verwertung von Ressourcen verschleiere. Den Gedanken, dass diese zur ›Ökonomisierbarkeit von allem‹ neige, greift auch Tomasz Konicz auf, der in der Ökonomie des Teilens einen ›anomalen‹ Wunsch nach alternativen Wirtschaftsformen angesichts der ›Krise des Kapitals‹ erkennt. Dafür bringt Konicz aus einer marxistischen Perspektive den ›prozessierenden Widerspruch‹ der Technologieentwicklung und ihre verheerenden Implikationen in Anschlag, die auch die Grundlage der Sharing Economy darstellen. Insofern sei die Suche nach Alternativen noch offen. With the digital media, new forms of the circulation of goods have been established on the basis of social networks, summarily addressed under the term ‘sharing economy.’ The enforcement of these online transactions is accompanied by a euphoric discourse, ascribing to the sharing economy utopian potentials to commonly generate added value. Wolfgang Sützl’s contribution emphasizes that the rhetorical effect of sharing and its idealization distract from exchange as basic economic form. With reference to theories of gift exchange, he shows how sharing (by denying the expectation of equivalence) reaches its limits by being confused with giving, and how it also conceals the value-creation processes of companies as well as the exploitation of resources. Tomasz Konicz also picks up on the idea that the sharing economy tends to an ‘economization of everything,’ seeing in it an ‘anomalous’ desire for alternative forms of economy in the face of the ‘crisis of capital.’ On the other hand, from a Marxist perspective, Konicz points to the ‘processing contradiction’ of technology development and its devastating implications, which also form the basis of the sharing economy. The Physikalische Gesellschaft zu Berlin , founded in 1845 as a local association, became a centre of interdisciplinarity. Until about 1880 the Physical Society contributed to the development of interdisciplinary sciences like bio(medical)physics, astrophysics and Physics of the earth (physical meteorology). In the same way the emergence of well-founded electrotechnics and scientific device construction was promoted by physics.

In dem Band »Angst, Lust, Zerstörung« haben Schorsch & Becker (1977) 14 Fälle von sexuell konnotierten Tötungsdelikten und zwei weitere schwere Sexualdelikte beschrieben. Die Täter sind von psychoanalytisch orientierten Autoren gesehen, ausführlich begutachtet und theoretisch eingeordnet worden. Diese Arbeit kann als einer der wesentlichen Ausgangspunkte einer spezifisch deutschen Auseinandersetzung mit Perversionskonzepten – besonders der Perversionen, die zu schweren Delikten führen, aber keineswegs auf sie beschränkt – gesehen werden. Dem Einfluss dieser Arbeit bis in die Gegenwart wird nachgegangen.
