Several recently discovered small proteins of less than 100 amino acids control important, but sometimes surprising, steps in the metabolism of cyanobacteria. There is mounting evidence that a large number of small protein genes have also been overlooked in the genome annotation of many other microorganisms. Although too short for enzymatic activity, their functional characterization has frequently revealed the involvement in processes such as signaling and sensing, interspecies communication, stress responses, metabolism, regulation of transcription and translation, and in the formation (...) of multisubunit protein complexes. Cyanobacteria are the only prokaryotes that perform oxygenic photosynthesis. They thrive under a wide variety of conditions as long as there is light and must cope with dynamic changes in the environment. To acclimate to these fluctuations, frequently small regulatory proteins become expressed that target key enzymes and metabolic processes. The consequences of their actions are profound and can even impact the surrounding microbiome. This review highlights the diverse functions of recently discovered small proteins that control cyanobacterial metabolism. It also addresses why many of these proteins have been overlooked so far and explores the potential for implementing metabolic engineering strategies to improve the use of cyanobacteria in biotechnological applications. ArgumentThe paper is based on a hitherto unexplored document (audiotape of an interview accompanied by a German transcript) from 1953, located in the Freud Papers at the Library of Congress. It contributes to a better understanding of the impact of Freud and of Psychoanalysis on personalities from the exact sciences, here represented by the noted applied mathematicians Richard von Mises and Hilda Geiringer from Vienna. The detailed discussion of the interview sheds some new light on the different roles of Kraus (...) and Freud in the Vienna culture, on the Vienna Jugendkulturbewegung (youth culture movement) during WWI in which Geiringer was involved, on Freud’s and Siegfried Bernfeld’s standing around 1930 among German philosophers and psychologists, and on Wilhelm Fließ’ theory of periodicity, which von Mises—based on his attitude as an applied mathematician—defended against superficial accusations. Finally, new biographical material is provided for von Mises and the remotely related Freud family, and for Geiringer’s and von Mises’ early lives. The interview, which was taken during the Cold War, also allows conclusions as to how politics influenced the memories and views of the participants. Part of the aim of the paper is historical documentation of unknown material (letters by Karl Kraus and Wolfgang Köhler, one book review by Wilhelm Ostwald, a file on Richard Pfennig), including some correction of erroneous information in the literature. Seasonal and historical transformations of ice and permafrost suggest that the Mackenzie Delta in Arctic Canada can be understood as a solid fluid. The concerns and practices of delta inhabitants show that fluidity and solidity remain important attributes in a solid fluid delta. They are significant not as exclusive properties, but as relational qualities, in the context of particular human projects and activities. Indigenous philosophies of ‘the land’ and Henri Lefebvre’s notion of ‘tempo’ in Rhythmanalysis: Space, Time and Everyday Life (...) (2004) may help to illustrate the predicament of living in a world that is solid and fluid rhythmically, and in relation to particular practices. Economic, political, sociocultural and physical transformations can all be experienced as both solid and fluid, depending on the degree to which they resonate with people’s purposes. In a world where everything seems to be changed and changing, solidity and fluidity may best be seen as indications of relative differences in tempo. (shrink)

Some researchers maintain that one of the primary functions of religion is to help individuals develop a strong sense of connectedness with other people. However, there is little research on how a sense of connectedness arises. The purpose of this study is to examine this issue. A conceptual model is developed to test the following key hypotheses: blacks are more likely than whites to affiliate with Conservative Christian denominations; Conservative Christians attend worship services more often than individuals in other faith (...) traditions; people who go to church more often are more likely to receive informal spiritual support ; individuals who receive more spiritual support are more likely to read religious literature and watch or listen to religious programs; and people who engage in these private religious practices are more likely to feel a close sense of religiously based connectedness with others. Data from a nationwide longitudinal survey provides support for each hypothesis. (shrink)

In this article, I present a case study of underdetermination in nineteenth-century electrodynamics between a pure field theory and a formulation in terms of action at a distance. A particular focus is on the question if and how this underdetermination is eventually resolved. It turns out that after a period of overt underdetermination, during which the approaches are developed separately, the two programmes are merged. On the basis of this development, I argue that the original underdetermination survives in hidden form (...) in ontological and methodological redundancies of the subsequent particle–field electrodynamics. Implications regarding criteria for theory choice and the realism debate are briefly addressed. (shrink)

Der Artikel untersucht das Markusevangelium als kommunikative Handlung und fragt nach der Ausgangsfrage, auf die der Text eine Antwort ist. Die Analyse der Aussagen über die Zeit nach der im Text erzählten Zeit hinaus, der Charakterisierung der Jünger und der Erzähldynamik vom Anfang zum Schluss führt zu dem Ergebnis, dass sich das Markusevangelium der Herausforderung der Anfrage stellt, die Jesus am Kreuz hinausruft: „Mein Gott, mein Gott, warum hast du mich verlassen?" . Die grundlegende Antwort auf diese Frage ist die (...) markinische Rede von der Verborgenheit Gottes, seiner Herrschaft und seines Sohnes. Entsprechend möchte das Markusevangelium seine Leser auf einen Weg zu vertiefter Wahrnehmung führen, der sie erkennen lässt, dass sie nicht von Gott verlassen sind, sondern dass Gott ihnen verborgen nahe ist. Dieser Weg durch den Text wird in den drei entscheidenden Schritten beschrieben. Aufgrund der bleibenden Bedeutsamkeit seiner Ausgangsfrage erweist sich das Markusevangelium als ein auch heute noch aktueller und herausfordernder Text.The article examines the gospel of Mark as communicative act and asks for the initial question, to which the text is the answer. The analysis of the statements about the time beyond the time covered by the narrative, the characterization of the disciples and the narrative dynamics from beginning to end lead to the conclusion, that the gospel according to Mark takes up the challenge of the question, which Jesus cries on the cross: „My God, my God, why do you have forsaken me?".The fundamental answer to this challenge is the Markan emphasis on the concealment of God and his kingdom and the concealment of his son. Accordingly, the gospel of Mark wants to lead the reader on a way of deepened perception and awareness in order to recognize, that he is not forsaken by God, but that God is covertly near. This way is described in his three decisive steps. Because of the lasting significance of its initial question the gospel of Mark turns out to be of vital importance for present readers. (shrink)

Die Beiträge dieses Bandes, u. a. von Daniel Martin Feige, Gunnar Hindrichs, Richard Klein, Cosima Linke und Matthias Vogel, ziehen erstmals ein Fazit und beleuchten die Perspektiven des mittlerweile ausdifferenzierten Diskurses über diese scheinbar unmittelbarste und zugleich (...) begrifflich am schwersten fassbare künstlerische Ausdrucksform. Der Autor erklärt einen Teil der Anziehungskraft und der suggestiven Wirkungen von Film- und Fernsehbildern aus mechanisch bzw. elektronisch provozierter Psychologie. Die Präsentationsdauer der einzelnen Film- und Fernsehbilder entspricht der Darbietungszeit jener ultrakurz präsentierten Diabilder, die bei der Pötzl-Tachistoskopie experimentell genutzt werden, um in Träumen und freien Assoziationen vorbewußt psychische Nachbilder zu erzeugen. Zwar läßt beim Film die rasche Aufeinanderfolge der Einzelbilder die Inhalte und den Bewegungsablauf fotografierter Objekte bewußt werden und wie natürlich erscheinen, die Unterbrechung ist vorbewußt jedoch folgenreich: (...) die stroboskopische Darbietungsweise erregt ansatzweise -- wie bei der experimentellen Traumstimulation -- innere Nachbild-Affekt-Komplexe, setzt davon allerdings nur den Anteil der Affekte frei. Vergleichbar der Verknüpfung von Tagesrest und Traumwunsch, verbinden sich die so dissoziierten Triebabkömmlinge mit den Filmbildinhalten, die nun zum Ersatz der abgekoppelten inneren Vorstellungsbilder werden, zu einer neuen Erlebniseinheit. Laws are true lawlike sentences. But what is lawlikeness? Much effort went into investigating the issue, but the richer the concert of opinions became, the more apparent their deficiencies became too, and with it the profound importance of the issue for epistemology and philosophy of science.

In the international sphere, sovereignty and fundamental rights are often at odds, giving these rights little space for action and, in general, only after crisis has led to tragedy, and tragedy to disgrace. International Law, on the other hand, consistently succumbs to forms of domination and power, and its scope of action is often limited to certain codifications which are frequently suspended by political exception. Sixteenth century Dominican theologian, Francisco de Vitoria, established the principles for a Law of the people, (...) based on secular civil power that, while still exercising internal sovereignty, could defend and privilege the “rights of all men” over the exercise of power and private interest. This article focuses on this dispute to show Vitoria’s position, who long preceded the great declarations of human rights of the 18 th century, presenting an original doctrine within the framework of an emerging globalization and based on the defense of fundamental rights. Does the critical discourse about resilience reiterate the problematic dichotomy between suffering and agency that the concept of resilience inscribes? In this discussion piece, I engage with Brad Evans’ and Julian Reid’s reflections on resilience. Although I share with Evans and Reid a normative critique of resilience, I am critical of their discussion of vulnerability. Rather than arguing that vulnerability precludes political transformation, as Evans and Reid do, or that vulnerability enables political coalition, as in Judith Butler’s account of precarity, (...) one should ask: how is vulnerability framed? I argue for framing vulnerability through a critical theory of the victim which explores the interconnections between injurability and agency rather than treating them as oppositional terms. This paper is an introduction into the theory of cellular spaces. From the more general model of nets of abstract cells which are interpreted by finite automata, it is shown how the model of cellular spaces is achieved by specialization. Cellular spaces are extremely homogeneous in function and in geometry. The relation between local and global behavior is regarded as the main topic of the theory. After a formal definition of cellular spaces, it is shown that not all functions of (...) the configuration space are induced by cellular spaces. In addition, the Garden-of-Eden problem is discussed, and a simple self-reproduction property is explained. (shrink)
