This is an entirely new translation of one of the fundamental works in the development of the study of language. Published in 1836, it formed the general introduction to Wilhelm von Humboldt's three-volume treatise on the Kawi language of Java. It is the final statement of his lifelong study of the nature of language, and presents a survey of a great many languages, exploring ways in which their various grammatical structures make them more or less suitable as vehicles of (...) thought and cultural development. Empirically wide-ranging - von Humboldt goes far beyond the Indo-European family of languages - it remains one of the most interesting and important attempts to draw philosophical conclusions from comparative linguistics. Rather than focusing on political and legal debates surrounding attempts to determine if and when genocidal rape has taken place in a particular setting, this essay turns instead to a crucial, yet neglected area of inquiry: the moral significance of genocidal rape, and more specifically, the nature of the harms that constitute the culpable wrongdoing that genocidal rape represents. In contrast to standard philosophical accounts, which tend to employ an individualistic framework, this essay offers a situated understanding of harm that (...) features the importance of interdependence and relationality and that conceptualizes harms as embodied and contextual. The paper ultimately reveals what is distinctive about this particular crime of sexual violence by exploring the logic of genocidal rape: genocidal rape involves the harm of forced self-betrayal unleashed relationally, causing victims as representatives of their group to participate inadvertently in the destruction of that group. To test the notion that shifts in visual imagery and attention are correlated with experiences of emotion, we studied 10 dream reports using an affirmative probe of emotion and a quantitative measure of plot discontinuity. We found that emotion, especially changes in emotion, are correlated with discontinuities in visual imagery. These correlations are quantified using a new graph theoretical method for analyzing narrative reports.

There is no way of an alliance between economy and ecology without conflict. As in the relation between both a principle conflict is programmed, the ethical claim is only conflict-minimizing. This is the thesis of the study of Wilhelm Korff about the economy-ecology-problematic. Korff works out a set of moral criterions for economic acting, which put pretentious moral standards on responsible action. It is especially considered if people are able to act according to these claims. Tillich develops a non-intentional understanding of faith in his essay “The Courage to Be”. Just as the “ontological fear” belongs to the human being so also the act of faith which Tillich reinterprets with the concept of courage. Believing does not mean believing in God, but being able to live from the power of unconditional trust. This article makes it clear that for Tillich faith, understood as unconditional trust, is just as much a part of being human as the “ontological (...) fear” that alone the act of faith can cope with. Finally, the significance of this understanding of faith for preaching and pastoral care which Tillich presented in his “Religious Speeches” and with which he gave important impulses to the church’s praxis is shown conclusively. Seit über hundert Jahren wartet eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit auf eine umfassende, kritische, kommentierte Edition der Briefe Wilhelm von Humboldts. Die lange Reihe prominenter Akteure der Goethe-Zeit (bzw. der Napoleonischen Ära), die zu den Briefpartnern dieses Staatsmannes, Bildungsreformers und Sprachforschers zählen, sowie die Vielfalt der Themen – neben den bereits genannten sind dies vor allem Philosophie, Literatur, Philologie, bildende Kunst, Politik, diplomatische Korrespondenz, Geschichte – und nicht zuletzt die literarischen Qualitäten der Brieftexte selbst machen dieses umfangreiche Briefcorpus zu einem der (...) bedeutendsten der Epoche: ein Zeitgemälde auf höchstem Niveau. Die Ausgabe wird in drei Abteilungen erscheinen: I. Jugendbriefe, Brautzeit, erste Ehejahre (1781–1802) II. Amtszeit (1802–1819) III. Altersmuße (1820–1835). Die I. Abteilung wird fünf Bände umfassen. Band 1 beginnt mit Briefen des 13-jährigen Knaben; erster Schwerpunkt ist die Reihe schwärmerischer Briefe an Henriette Herz und weitere Mitglieder der „Verbindung“, einer Vereinigung zur gegenseitigen moralischen Vervollkommnung, die Humboldt bis zur Verlobung mit Karoline von Dacheröden intensiv beschäftigte; danach stehen die Briefe an die Braut im Vordergrund. Außerdem spielen die Briefe an Georg Forster und Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi eine wichtige Rolle; auch die später umfangreiche Korrespondenz mit Carl Gustaf von Brinkman beginnt bereits in dieser Periode. Mit der Eheschließung im Juni 1791 wird der Band abgeschlossen. Der Band enthält 198 Briefe, davon 21 bisher ungedruckte. (shrink)

Aufgabe einer Philosophie ist es, die theoretische Elemente bereitzustellen, mit deren Hilfe ein Individuum sein Leben selbst gestalten kann. Das Buch beginnt mit einem Bild: Exkursion in die Philosophie (1959 Edward Hopper). Seine Forschungsreise führt zunächst in die Geschichte der Philosophie, um aufzuzeigen, wie tief die Frage der Lebenskunst in ihr verwurzelt ist, bevor sie im Verlauf des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts fast gänzlich außer Blick geriet. Mit Bezug auf die Herausforderungen der Gegenwart werden dann die Umrisse einer Philosophie der (...) Lebenskunst skizziert.Ein neuerliches Nachdenken über die Moderne bildet den Hintergrund für die Entfaltung der Begriffe der Lebensführung, der Lebensform und des Lebensstils. Über die Frage nach dem »guten Leben« hinaus, die in den neunziger Jahren wieder an Bedeutung gewonnen hat, wird hier die weitgehende nach dem »schönen Leben« gestellt.Die Frage nach dem Subjekt der Lebenskunst wie auch nach dem Verhältnis zwischen dem Selbst und den Anderen wird eingehend erörtert. Eigens thematisiert wird die Hermeneutik der Existenz, die erforderlich ist, um sich »aufs Leben zu verstehen«, sowie die Lehr- und Lernbarkeit dieses Vermögens. Schließlich kommt es Schmid darauf an, die Problemstellung der Ökologie in ihrer Bedeutung für eine neue Lebenskunst herauszustellen und die Grundzüge einer ökologischen Lebenskunst zu entwerfen. Diese Grundlegung einer Philosophie der Lebenskunst möchte einem einst zentralen, dann »vergessenen« Interesse der Philosophie wieder die ihm gebührende Geltung verschaffen. (shrink)

Girard's "Battling to the End" is a challenging book that claims the possibility of an end of the world caused by human beings through war, terrorism or environmental disaster. At its center we can find the danger of an escalation of violence as it was addressed by Clausewitz in his book "On War". Even if this apocalyptic view worries its analytical potential should not be yielded to fundamentalists. The authors of this collection of essays follow Girard through European history, filling (...) out some of his approximate sketches, sheding light on some obscure parts and marking inconsequences in the unfolding of his approach. A critical reading of "Battling to the End" will contribute to a better understanding of the modern European history and of the dangerous crises in our contemporary world. (shrink)
