  8. Anselmian Defense of Hell.T. Parker Haratine & Kevin A. Smith - 2024 - TheoLogica: An International Journal for Philosophy of Religion and Philosophical Theology 8 (1).
This article constructively retrieves St. Anselm of Canterbury’s theory of retributive justice and provides a defense of what can be called the retributive model of hell. In the first part of this article, we develop the place of retributive punishment in Anselm’s thinking and discuss how and when retributive punishment is a good thing. In the second part, we apply Anselm’s thinking on retributive justice to the problem of hell and provide a defense of how hell, defined as a state (...)

  12. Augustine on memory, the mind, and human flourishing.T. Parker Haratine - 2024 - British Journal for the History of Philosophy 32 (6):1220-1240.
Augustine maintains that the mind at least consists of memory, intellect, and will (De Trinitate 10.9.13 & 10.11.17). While it is easy to understand the intellect and will as essential to the mind’s activities, memory proves more difficult to understand. It is not immediately clear, for example, whether a human mind could operate without memory, whether people without memory have minds, and what distinguishes memory from the intellect. To understand the role of memory and its respective activities, this article addresses (...)

    The Vienna Circle – A Modernist Project.Valentin A. Bazhanov, Ilya T. Kasavin & Alexander L. Nikiforov - 2024 - Epistemology and Philosophy of Science 61 (1):6-23.
The article examines the main ideological content of the work of the community of scientists and philosophers, which entered the history of philosophy under the name “The Vienna Circle”. Representatives of this association viewed their main methodological task in the logical analysis of the language of science in order to eliminate metaphysical – pseudoscientific – concepts. They investigated the structure of scientific theories, the functions of the theory – explanation and prediction, the processes of justification, confirmation and refutation of theories. (...)

    Preventing and De-Escalating Ethical Conflict: A Communication-Training Mediation Model.Patricia A. Parker & Tomer T. Levin - 2015 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 26 (4):342-345.
While ethical conflicts in the provision of healthcare are common, the current third-party mediator model is limited by a lack of expert ethical mediators, who are often not on site when conflict escalates. In order to improve clinical outcomes in situations such as conflicts at the end of life, we suggest that clinicians—physicians, nurses and social workers—be trained to prevent and deescalate emerging conflicts. This can be achieved using a mediation model framed by a communication-training approach. A case example is (...)

  31. Do case studies mislead about the nature of reality?S. Pattison, D. Dickenson, M. Parker & T. Heller - 1999 - Journal of Medical Ethics 25 (1):42-46.
This paper attempts a partial, critical look at the construction and use of case studies in ethics education. It argues that the authors and users of case studies are often insufficiently aware of the literary nature of these artefacts: this may lead to some confusion between fiction and reality. Issues of the nature of the genre, the fictional, story-constructing aspect of case studies, the nature of authorship, and the purposes and uses of case studies as "texts" are outlined and discussed. (...)

Characterizing Emotion Recognition and Theory of Mind Performance Profiles in Unaffected Siblings of Autistic Children.Mirko Uljarević, Nicholas T. Bott, Robin A. Libove, Jennifer M. Phillips, Karen J. Parker & Antonio Y. Hardan - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Emotion recognition skills and the ability to understand the mental states of others are crucial for normal social functioning. Conversely, delays and impairments in these processes can have a profound impact on capability to engage in, maintain, and effectively regulate social interactions. Therefore, this study aimed to compare the performance of 42 autistic children, 45 unaffected siblings, and 41 typically developing controls on the Affect Recognition and Theory of Mind subtests of the Developmental Neuropsychological Assessment Battery. There were no significant (...)

Safety of deep brain stimulation in pregnancy: A comprehensive review.Caroline King, T. Maxwell Parker, Kay Roussos-Ross, Adolfo Ramirez-Zamora, John C. Smulian, Michael S. Okun & Joshua K. Wong - 2022 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 16:997552.
IntroductionDeep brain stimulation (DBS) is increasingly used to treat the symptoms of various neurologic and psychiatric conditions. People can undergo the procedure during reproductive years but the safety of DBS in pregnancy remains relatively unknown given the paucity of published cases. We thus conducted a review of the literature to determine the state of current knowledge about DBS in pregnancy and to determine how eligibility criteria are approached in clinical trials with respect to pregnancy and the potential for pregnancy.MethodsA literature (...)

    Sustaining attention in affective contexts during adolescence: age-related differences and association with elevated symptoms of depression and anxiety.D. L. Dunning, J. Parker, K. Griffiths, M. Bennett, A. Archer-Boyd, A. Bevan, S. Ahmed, C. Griffin, L. Foulkes, J. Leung, A. Sakhardande, T. Manly, W. Kuyken, J. M. G. Williams, S. -J. Blakemore & T. Dalgleish - 2024 - Cognition and Emotion 38 (7):1122-1134.
Sustained attention, a key cognitive skill that improves during childhood and adolescence, tends to be worse in some emotional and behavioural disorders. Sustained attention is typically studied in non-affective task contexts; here, we used a novel task to index performance in affective versus neutral contexts across adolescence (N = 465; ages 11–18). We asked whether: (i) performance would be worse in negative versus neutral task contexts; (ii) performance would improve with age; (iii) affective interference would be greater in younger adolescents; (...)

Including growers in the “food safety” conversation: enhancing the design and implementation of food safety programming based on farm and marketing needs of fresh fruit and vegetable producers. [REVIEW]Jason S. Parker, Robyn S. Wilson, Jeffrey T. LeJeune & Douglas Doohan - 2012 - Agriculture and Human Values 29 (3):303-319.
Experts identified water quality, manure, good handling practices (including personal hygiene and equipment sanitation), and traceability as critical farm problem areas that, if addressed, are likely to decrease risk associated with microbial contamination of fresh produce from all scales of agriculture. However, the diverse nature of production strategies used by produce farmers presents multiple options for addressing foodborne illness issues while simultaneously creating potential complications. We use a mental models methodology to enhance our understanding of the underlying factors and assumptions (...)

Processing Contradictory CSR Information: The Influence of Primacy and Recency Effects on the Consumer-Firm Relationship.Michael C. Peasley, Parker J. Woodroof & Joshua T. Coleman - 2020 - Journal of Business Ethics 172 (2):275-289.
Drawing on the influence of primacy and recency effects in processing information about corporate social responsibility, the authors examine how internal and external factors impact the consumer-firm relationship in the presence of contradictory CSR information. Evaluating these factors provides a more comprehensive understanding of how consumers react to unethical and socially irresponsible actions. Contrary to recent research that suggests a reactive CSR communication strategy to be best due to recency effects, the present findings show that past customer experiences with the (...)
