    (1 other version)Making Things Collectively.Chaeyoung Paek - forthcoming - Metaphysics 6 (1):1-12.
In this paper, I examine two different kinds of production processes, mass production and collaborative production. While both production processes intuitively seem like collective actions, the established views about collective action fail to treat them as collective action due to the common issue: the lack of shared intention. As an alternative, I propose the artifactual view of action, according to which collective action is possible even when there is no shared intention among agents. Motivated by Evnine’s (2016) view about action, (...)

  11. Supererogation, Suberogation, and Maximising Expected Choiceworthiness.Leora Urim Sung - forthcoming - Canadian Journal of Philosophy.
Recently, several philosophers have argued that, when faced with moral uncertainty, we ought to choose the option with the maximal expected choiceworthiness (MEC). This view has been challenged on the grounds that it is implausibly demanding. In response, those who endorse MEC have argued that we should take into account the all-things-considered choiceworthiness of our options when determining the maximally choiceworthy option. In this paper, I argue that this gives rise to another problem: for the most part, acts that we (...)

The Early Confucian Worry about Yuan.Winnie Sung - 2020 - Journal of Value Inquiry 54 (2):257-271.
This article focuses on a psychological phenomenon discussed by the early Confucian: yuan 怨, which is often translated as “resentment”, “grievance”, “lament”, or “complaint”. I attempt to use the early Confucian discussions of yuan to shed light on an aspect of human psychology, namely, when one laments about certain conditions that obtain in such a way that she sees as beyond her control and negatively affects her. This is an unusual reactive attitude because one who has yuan takes the “passive (...)

  14. Never Just Save the Few.Leora Urim Sung - 2022 - Utilitas 34 (3):275-288.
Most people have the intuition that, when we can save the lives of either a few people in one group or many people in another group, and all other things are equal, we ought to save the group with the most people. However, several philosophers have argued against this intuition, most famously John Taurek, in his article ‘Should the Numbers Count?’ They argue that there is no moral obligation to save the greater number, and that we are permitted to save (...)

Does tarka Implicate Negative Speculation?Sung Yong Kang - 2008 - Proceedings of the Xxii World Congress of Philosophy 6:119-125.
‘Tarka’ is a technical term that occupies a significant position in the logico-epistemological traditions in India. In this paper, it is attempted to expound the exact meaning of the term, in particular in the early Nyaya tradition, on the basis of the explanations found in the Nyayabhasya. The view that the essential feature of tarka consists in the differentiating approach (vibhaga) to the matter on discourse is substantiated, and with it a possible explanation is given for the well-known ambivalent valuations (...)

    A Network of Argumentation Schemes and Critical Questions.Sung-Jun Pyon & Yong-Sok Ri - 2022 - Informal Logic 42 (4):787-833.
In this paper, we devise a network that consists of argumentation schemes and critical questions that participants in debates can use to easily construct arguments that attack or support former arguments. As a prototype, we build a potential network of argumentation schemes and critical questions with a practical reasoning scheme at its center. The usefulness of a NASCQ in constructing and reconstructing complex arguments and in formal argumentation is also explored along with argumentation more broadly.

Validation of a Korean version of the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire.Sung-Suk Han, Juhu Kim, Yong-Soon Kim & Sunghee Ahn - 2010 - Nursing Ethics 17 (1):99-105.
The main purpose of this study was to validate a scale to examine the moral sensitivity of Korean nurses. A pre-existing scale, the Moral Sensitivity Questionnaire (MSQ), developed by Lützén, was used after deletion of three items. The reliability and validity of the scale were examined by using Cronbach’s alpha and factor analysis, respectively. According to the results, reliability of the scale was adequate but its construct validity was not fully supported. Through discussion on evidence of validity, five subconstructs emerged. (...)

Learning Foreign Sounds in an Alien World: Videogame Training Improves Non-Native Speech Categorization.Sung-joo Lim & Lori L. Holt - 2011 - Cognitive Science 35 (7):1390-1405.
Although speech categories are defined by multiple acoustic dimensions, some are perceptually weighted more than others and there are residual effects of native-language weightings in non-native speech perception. Recent research on nonlinguistic sound category learning suggests that the distribution characteristics of experienced sounds influence perceptual cue weights: Increasing variability across a dimension leads listeners to rely upon it less in subsequent category learning (Holt & Lotto, 2006). The present experiment investigated the implications of this among native Japanese learning English /r/-/l/ (...)

We are typically near-future biased, prioritising our present and near-future interests over our own distant-future interests. This bias can be directed at others as well, prioritising their present and near-future interests over their distant-future interests. I here argue that, given these biases, and given a plausible limit on the extent to which we can permissibly prioritise our present interests over the present interests of strangers, we are morally required to prioritise the present interests of strangers over our distant-future interests. I (...)

    Reconciling Constitutionalism with Power: Towards a Constitutional Nomos of Political Ordering.K. U. O. Ming-Sung - 2010 - Ratio Juris 23 (3):390-410.
Drawing upon Hannah Arendt's and Carl Schmitt's theories on the relationship between nomos and boundary, this paper revisits how constitutionalism and political power are reconciled as constitutional ordering. It first analyzes constitutionalism in the light of political modernity. Indicating that political power grounded by constitutions is omnipotent, complementing and completing constitutionalism, the paper contends that an omnipotent constitutional ordering is anything but an unleashed Leviathan. It is argued that constitutional omnipotence is framed and thus constrained by a constitutional nomos, the (...)

This article proposes a semiotic reading of the most widely recognized internet image macro memes (termed “canonical image macro memes” or CIMMs) and analyzes these memes as individual texts. It demonstrates that memes possess their own language, or system of signs, and form their own literature. By delineating the extent to which the visual and verbal components are customizeable image macro memes, this article strives to understand the language of CIMMs, and the processes and limitations by which meaning is generated. Defiance and Sympathy: Heterogeneity of Experiences Among Members of a Stigmatized Organization.Sung-Chul Noh & Kyoung-Hee Yu - 2024 - Business and Society 63 (6):1307-1339.
Organizational members are likely to harbor different allegiances, values, and identifications that can affect how they respond to their organization’s stigmatization. Drawing on the empirical case of a public broadcaster in South Korea initially stigmatized for its association with an authoritarian government, we focus on the responses of different intra-organizational groups to stigma and their interactions with each other and with external audiences. We find that faced with stigma, groups in the organization were divided about how to respond, with those (...)

This study analyses the types and frequencies of ethical dilemmas and the rationale of ethical decision making in student nurses; it also evaluates their decision making. One hundred senior student nurses who were enrolled in a two-credit course in nursing ethics were asked to provide an informal description of a dilemma that they had experienced during their clinical practice. The results were as follows. The ethical dilemmas identified fell into four categories and were of 27 types. Those most frequently experienced (...)
