For the Sake of the Republic: The Dutch Translation of Forbonnais's Elémens du commerce.Ida Nijenhuis - 2014 - History of European Ideas 40 (8):1202-1216.
SummaryThis article addresses how and why the Dutch translation of Forbonnais's Elémens de commerce came about and the reasons for its lack of success. It explores the context in which the Utrecht printers and booksellers Spruit and Haanebrink in 1771 published a Dutch version of the first edition of the Elémens. In the preceding decades the deteriorating wealth and power of the Dutch Republic had become a major theme in the transnational debates on political economy. Recent research has established that (...)

The Victorians were still faster than us. Commentary: Factors influencing the latency of simple reaction time.Michael Anthony Woodley of Menie, Jan te Nijenhuis & Raegan Murphy - 2015 - Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 9:150650.
Woods et al. (2015) claim that secular Simple Reaction Time (SRT) slowing (Woodley et al. 2013), disappears once modern studies are corrected for software and hardware lag, and once Galton’s data are corrected for fastest-response selection. Here, this is challenged with a reanalysis of the secular slowing of SRT in the UK amongst large (N>500), population-representative age-matched (≊18-30 years) studies. Starting with Galton’s sample, this is assigned the simulated value estimated by Dodonova and Dodonov (2013, who like Woods et al. (...)

General intelligence is a source of individual differences between species: Solving an anomaly.Michael A. Woodley of Menie, Heitor B. F. Fernandes, Jan te Nijenhuis, Mateo Peñaherrera-Aguirre & Aurelio José Figueredo - 2017 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 40:e223.
Burkart et al. present a paradox – general factors of intelligence exist among individual differences (g) in performance in several species, and also at the aggregate level (G); however, there is ambiguous evidence for the existence of g when analyzing data using a mixed approach, that is, when comparing individuals of different species using the same cognitive ability battery. Here, we present an empirical solution to this paradox.

Yoshio Gonnosuke and His Comparative Dutch‐Japanese Syntax: Glimpses at the Unpublished Second Part of Siebold's “Epitome Linguae Japonicae”.Sven Osterkamp - 2023 - Berichte Zur Wissenschaftsgeschichte 46 (1):54-75.
After outlining the life and works of interpreter Yoshio Gonnosuke, this paper introduces the manuscript witnesses of his hitherto unstudied comparative Dutch–Japanese syntax written in the mid‐1820s, which was modelled on Pieter Weiland's Nederduitsche spraakkunst (1805). This is followed by a closer look at the process of compilation and publication of Philipp Franz von Siebold's “Epitome linguae japonicae,” of which only the first part was published in 1826. Evidence is provided to confirm Yoshio's involvement in this work and to (...)

On Ex(s)istere.Richard Colledge - 2008 - Proceedings of the American Catholic Philosophical Association 82:263-274.
This paper looks to revive and advance dialogue surrounding John Nijenhuis’s case against ‘existence language’ as a rendering of Aquinas’s esse. Nijenhuis presented both a semantic/grammatical case for abandoning this practice as well as a more systematic argument based on his reading of Thomist metaphysics. On one hand, I affirm the important distinction between being and existence and lend qualified support to his interpretation of the quantitiative/qualitative correlation between esse and essentia in Aquinas’s texts. On the other hand, (...)

The Guts of the Matter: Infusoria from Ehrenberg to Bütschli, 1838-1876. [REVIEW]Frederick B. Churchill - 1989 - Journal of the History of Biology 22 (2):189-213.
We began our survey at a time when Ehrenberg's functional principles concerning the design of all organisms prevailed in interpreting the taxonomic place and internal structure of Infusoria. Other options existed, such as Dujardin's sarcode theory and Siebold's cellular analogy, but these were not persuasive for reasons both relevant to and in addition to the microscopic observations. By mid-century other considerations, including the continuing search for complex life cycles and manifestations of sex, dictated the microscopist's rendering of infusorians. Müller (...)
