Redefining Humanity in the Era of AI – Technical Civilization.Shoko Suzuki - 2020 - Paragrana: Internationale Zeitschrift für Historische Anthropologie 29 (1):83-93.
The human environment is currently undergoing massive change amid the rapid adoption of information and communications technology (ICT). ICT can be characterized as offering an opportunity to consider the nature of humanity, create new values, and foster new cultures. As humans, the question that technical innovation relating to Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Robots thrusts before us is, “What is a human?” What exactly are the things that AI will never be able to do, no matter how close it gets to (...)

  4. Logical dynamics of some speech acts that affect obligations and preferences.Tomoyuki Yamada - 2008 - Synthese 165 (2):295 - 315.
In this paper, illocutionary acts of commanding will be differentiated from perlocutionary acts that affect preferences of addressees in a new dynamic logic which combines the preference upgrade introduced in DEUL (dynamic epistemic upgrade logic) by van Benthem and Liu with the deontic update introduced in ECL II (eliminative command logic II) by Yamada. The resulting logic will incorporate J. L. Austin’s distinction between illocutionary acts as acts having mere conventional effects and perlocutionary acts as acts having real effects (...)

Miyazaki Hayao’s Animism and the Anthropocene.Shoko Yoneyama - forthcoming - Theory, Culture and Society:026327642110305.
The need for a reconsideration of human-nature relationships has been widely recognized in the Anthropocene. It is difficult to rethink, however, because there is a crisis of imagination that is deeply entrenched within the fundamental premises of modernity. This article explores how ‘critical animism’ developed by Miyazaki Hayao of Studio Ghibli can address this paucity of imagination by providing alternative ways of knowing and being. ‘Critical animism’ emerged from the fusion of a critique of modernity with informal cultural heritage in (...)

Salivary Oxytocin Is Negatively Associated With Religious Faith in Japanese Non-Abrahamic People.Junko Yamada, Yo Nakawake, Qiulu Shou, Kuniyuki Nishina, Masahiro Matsunaga & Haruto Takagishi - 2021 - Frontiers in Psychology 12.
Spirituality and religiosity have a significant impact on one's well-being. Although previous studies have indicated that the neuropeptide hormone oxytocin is associated with spirituality/religiosity, existing findings remain inconsistent. Some studies have reported a positive relationship between oxytocin and spirituality/religiosity, while other studies have reported a negative association. Herein, we examined the association between endogenous oxytocin and spirituality/religiosity in 200 non-Abrahamic Japanese individuals by measuring the level of salivary oxytocin and spiritual/religious faith. We found that the level of salivary oxytocin was (...)

Is irrational thinking associated with lower earnings and happiness?Shoko Yamane, Hiroyasu Yoneda & Yoshiro Tsutsui - 2019 - Mind and Society 18 (1):87-104.
This study investigates the individual outcomes of irrational thinking, including belief in the paranormal and non-scientific thinking. These modes of thinking are identified through factor analysis of eleven questions asked in a large-scale survey conducted in Japan in 2008. Income and happiness are used as measures of individual performance. We propose two hypotheses. Previous studies in finance lead us to consider Hypothesis 1 that both higher belief in the paranormal and non-scientific thinking are associated with lower income. Literature on the (...)

In his “A new argument for evidentialism” (Shah, Philos Q 56(225): 481–498, 2006 ), Nishi Shah argues that the best explanation of a feature of deliberation whether to believe that p which he calls transparency entails that only evidence can be reason to believe that p. I show that his argument fails because a crucial lemma that his argument appeals to cannot be supported without assuming evidentialism to be true in the first place.

Pedagogical tact at the intersection: optimizing educational practice amid intercultural and digital transformations.Shoko Suzuki - 2024 - Ethics and Education 19 (3):275-285.
This paper examines the challenge of mediating theory and practice in pedagogy, specifically focusing on the critical importance of educational tact as a mediator between the two. It first defines the role of pedagogical tact, underlining its significance as a vital skill for professionals. It also explores the qualities of teachers who embrace diversity and foster intercultural understanding, which is essential and crucial in our increasingly globalized world. Moreover, it underscores the unique role of pedagogical tact in haptic research, a (...)

Japanese tort-case dataset for rationale-supported legal judgment prediction.Hiroaki Yamada, Takenobu Tokunaga, Ryutaro Ohara, Akira Tokutsu, Keisuke Takeshita & Mihoko Sumida - forthcoming - Artificial Intelligence and Law:1-25.
This paper presents the first dataset for Japanese Legal Judgment Prediction (LJP), the Japanese Tort-case Dataset (JTD), which features two tasks: tort prediction and its rationale extraction. The rationale extraction task identifies the court’s accepting arguments from alleged arguments by plaintiffs and defendants, which is a novel task in the field. JTD is constructed based on annotated 3477 Japanese Civil Code judgments by 41 legal experts, resulting in 7978 instances with 59,697 of their alleged arguments from the involved parties. Our (...)

Humanity and Rituals in the Age of Living with COVID-19.Shoko Suzuki - 2021 - Paragrana: Internationale Zeitschrift für Historische Anthropologie 30 (2):21-27.
The spread of the novel coronavirus brought an impact on human civilization. The history of infectious diseases teaches us that overcoming them requires the long-term perspective for the complex of the following keys, including the mutation of pathogens, the disappearance of vectors, the effectiveness of protective measures, the acquisition of herd immunity, the development of vaccines, and the climate. So, what do we lose or gain in this unwanted situation of living with viruses? From the perspective of historical anthropology, it (...)

Soft Paternalism and Freedom in the Age of Artificial Intelligence – Through the “tactfulness (融通無碍 Yuzu-Muge)” of 華厳学 Hua-Yan philosophy.Shoko Suzuki - 2023 - Paragrana: Internationale Zeitschrift für Historische Anthropologie 32 (1):247-256.
Living in an era of technological innovations, we must understand and trust them to benefit from these new technologies. In this context, paternalism is renewed as the so-called “soft-” or “Libertarian paternalism”. How can we face it and ensure freedom in the vortex of wellmeaning advice and persuasion? This paper will discuss 1. the characteristics of freedom since the 18th century from the perspective of the Enlightenment discourse in Germany by Mendelssohn and Kant, 2. the conditions for freedom in the (...)

Pharmacological interventions for social cognitive impairments in schizophrenia: A protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis.Yuji Yamada, Ryo Okubo, Hisateru Tachimori, Takashi Uchino, Ryotaro Kubota, Hiroki Okano, Shuhei Ishikawa, Toru Horinouchi, Keisuke Takanobu, Ryo Sawagashira, Yumi Hasegawa, Yohei Sasaki, Motohiro Nishiuchi, Takahiro Kawashima, Yui Tomo, Naoki Hashimoto, Satoru Ikezawa, Takahiro Nemoto, Norio Watanabe & Tomiki Sumiyoshi - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
BackgroundSocial cognitive impairments adversely affect social functioning in patients with schizophrenia. Although pharmacological interventions have been suggested to provide some benefits on social cognition, little information is available on the comparative efficacy of pharmacotherapy. Thus, the aim of this planned systematic review and network meta-analysis is to perform a quantitative comparison of the effects of various psychotropic drugs, including supplements, on social cognition disturbances of schizophrenia.MethodsThe literature search will be carried out using the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled (...)

Wright’s Strict Finitistic Logic in the Classical Metatheory: The Propositional Case.Takahiro Yamada - 2023 - Journal of Philosophical Logic 52 (4).
Crispin Wright in his 1982 paper argues for strict finitism, a constructive standpoint that is more restrictive than intuitionism. In its appendix, he proposes models of strict finitistic arithmetic. They are tree-like structures, formed in his strict finitistic metatheory, of equations between numerals on which concrete arithmetical sentences are evaluated. As a first step towards classical formalisation of strict finitism, we propose their counterparts in the classical metatheory with one additional assumption, and then extract the propositional part of ‘strict finitistic (...)

In this paper, we develop an organization method of page information agents for adaptive interface between a user and a Web search engine. Though a Web search engine indicates a hit list of Web pages to user’s query using a large database, they includes many useless ones. Thus a user has to select useful Web pages from them with page information indicated on the hit list, and actually fetch the Web page for investigating the relevance. Unfortunately, since the page information (...)
