As the father of modern linguistics, Ferdinand de Saussure influences all aspects of linguistic development with no exception of Cognitive Grammar. A scrutiny of how Saussure is understood in Cognitive Grammar indicates that Saussurean linguistics is misinterpreted in terms of five core ideas: (1) langue, rather than parole, is given highest priority; (2) the internal relation of “signifier-signified” counts as the pairing of “form-meaning”; (3) “arbitrariness” is contradictory to “symbolicity”; (4) “arbitrariness” means “unmotivatedness”; (5) arbitrariness is not the inherent nature (...) of morphological and syntactic structures. The purpose of this study is to discuss the effects of audiovisual input on second language acquisition and the factors that influence the difficulty of audiovisual learning through a systematic literature review. Prior to this systematic review, in this paper, we searched papers on related topics for the past 10 years from 2012 to 2022, and found 46 journal papers that met the research criteria. They can basically represent the scholarly work in this field. The 46 studies were published in (...) journals indexed in Google Scholar, Eric, Scopus, and Wiley Library. Databases were selected according to a set of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The following conclusions are drawn from the literature review: Audiovisual input can provide more authentic language input and more adequate and richer multimodal cultural and situational contexts, which can better promote learners' understanding of the content and stimulate learners' interest in participating in listening comprehension tasks. The influencing factors of multimodal input on listening difficulty include subtitles, video type, and the relationship between the audio and visual input. (shrink)

Fatty acids (FAs) are well known to serve as substrates for reactions that provide cells with membranes and energy. In contrast to these metabolic reactions, the physiological importance of FAs themselves known as free FAs (FFAs) in cells remains obscure. Since accumulation of FFAs in cells is toxic, cells must develop mechanisms to detoxify FFAs. One such mechanism is to sequester free polyunsaturated FAs (PUFAs) into a droplet‐like structure assembled by Fas‐Associated Factor 1 (FAF1), a cytosolic protein. This sequestration limits (...) access of PUFAs to Fe2+, thereby preventing Fe2+‐catalyzed PUFA peroxidation. Consequently, assembly of the FAF1‐FFA complex is critical to protect cells from ferroptosis, a cell death pathway triggered by PUFA peroxidation. The observations that free PUFAs in cytosol are not randomly diffused but rather sequestered into a membraneless complex should open new directions to explore signaling pathways by which FFAs regulate cellular physiology. The vast majority of indigenous communities are among the world’s poorest and are unlikely to be engaged in a thriving, mutually beneficial partnership with an MNC. While there are increasing studies on CSR initiatives in base of the pyramid communities, few—if any—feature the self-initiated stakeholder transition of an impoverished community. This paper examines the factors that motivated the stakeholder transformation process of an indigenous community, from its position as a non-stakeholder, one lacking in power and legitimacy, to the status of (...) being a primary stakeholder of the firm. We applied a constructivist grounded theory approach to longitudinal data to arrive at the conceptual framework. The findings presented are drawn from an in-depth case study of the Maasai, an indigenous community from East Africa. The findings point to the existence of entrepreneurial alertness that is instrumental in propelling the indigenous community to evolve from one stakeholder category to the next. Our research aims to propose a possible foundation for how communities deep in poverty can coalesce themselves to make their social needs salient to multinational organizations. (shrink)

This article aims to investigate the impact of employee perceptions of corporate social responsibility on job embeddedness under the drastic circumstances of coronavirus disease 2019. This study also investigated the role of organizational identification as a psychological mechanism linking employee perceptions of corporate social responsibility to job embeddedness. Survey data were collected from 325 employees in banking industry of China and analyzed using partial least squares structural equation modeling. Results revealed that CSR to employees and organizational identification were positively and (...) significantly related to job embeddedness, while CSR to customers, CSR to government, and CSR to society did not significantly predict job embeddedness. Organizational identification fully mediated the relationship between CSR to customers, CSR to government, CSR to society and job embeddedness, and partially mediated the relationship between CSR to employees and job embeddedness. The results suggest engaging in CSR activities can lead employees to identify themselves with the organization and enhance their embeddedness. This study explores the religious dimensions of Thai Buddhism through the interplay between ritual and art, and its impact on Thai identity. It investigates how art underpins Thai Buddhist rituals by examining the nature and role of prominent ritual and religious practices. The research focuses on temple art and artistic elements such as murals, statues, and other features that transform ritual spaces into sacred zones during significant festivals like Visakha Bucha and Makha Bucha. Additionally, it includes an analysis of sand (...) mandalas, which symbolize temporality and engage participants in their creation and observation. The study also addresses the ethnoreligious aspects of Thai folk music (Luk Thung) and dance-drama (Khon), highlighting their roles in reinforcing Buddhist institutions and societal cohesion. By examining case studies such as Loy Krathong and the Phuket Vegetarian Festival, the study demonstrates how religious and cultural performances shape Thai identity. Ultimately, the research asserts that Thai Buddhist art functions as both a symbol of religious principles and an active medium for religious representation and performance, thereby affirming and enacting Thai national and sacred identity. I address the problem of whether philosophy can be international by its claim to represent rationality, hence universality. I argue in favor of this claim by focusing on the special logic thesis in Chinese philosophy. This thesis holds that a different type of logic must be used when studying the Chinese texts. I argue at length against the special logic thesis by examining the problem of human nature in the Confucian philosophers Mencius, Hsün Tzu and Kao Tzu. I show how (...) their arguments can be reconstructed as inductive analogical arguments and as deductive argument. I then broaden the notion of the logic of argumentation into a discussion of metaphysical anti‐essentialism and underdetermination in order to resolve the problem of human nature and also to show how the same types of logical analysis (more generally construed) can be applied to the arguments from these Confucian philosophers. Under my treatment, Kao Tzu, somewhat surprisingly, turns out to provide the most insight. (shrink)

In ancient China, astronomers attempted to correct mean geocentric longitude of the inner planets using planetary “Expansion–Contraction Difference” (yingsuo cha 盈縮差) to obtain the true geocentric longitude. They used the “Limit Degree” (xiandu 限度) as the independent variable for the “Expansion–Contraction Difference”. Although this idea was relatively ideal and operationally simple, the algorithm of the “Expansion–Contraction Difference” designed by ancient Chinese astronomers had significant flaws in terms of its actual computational effectiveness for calculating the position of the inner planets. The (...) reason for this flaw is that, based on its intended purpose, the “Expansion–Contraction Difference” should be a three-variable function, including the planetary equation of center, the solar equation of center and the phase angle of the planet, and each variable has different independent variables. However, ancient Chinese astronomers attempted to simplify this complex three-variable function into a single-variable function, and such simplification was unsuccessful. Further research indicates that the starting point of the expansion phase in the “Table of Expansion–Contraction Difference” (Yingsuo Li 盈縮曆) for the inner planets in ancient Chinese astronomical systems did not accurately depict the position of the planetary perihelion. Adjusting the starting point based on the longitude can improve the accuracy to some extent. Although the special coefficients of “double it for Venus, triple it for Mercury” can enhance the accuracy of calculations on the position of the inner planets, the result is not as ideal as expected. This study highlights that within the framework of ancient Chinese planetary theory, the algorithm of the “Expansion–Contraction Difference” for the inner planets possessed inherent and irreparable flaws, resulting in significant errors in the calculation of the apparent position of the inner planets. How to automatically detect intracranial aneurysms from Three-Dimension Time of Flight Magnetic Resonance Angiography images is a typical 3D image classification problem. Currently, the commonly used method is the Maximum Intensity Projection- based way. It transfers 3D classification into 2D case by projecting the 3D patch into 2D planes along different directions on the basis of voxel’s intensity. After then, the 2D Convolutional Neural Network is established to do classification. It has been shown that the MIP-based method can reduce the (...) demands for the samples and increase the computation efficiency. Meanwhile, the accuracy is comparable with that of 3D image classification. Inspired by the strategy of MIP, we want to further reduce the demands for samples and accelerate the training by transferring the 2D image classification into 1D case, i.e., we want to generate the 1D vectors from the MIP images and then establish a 1D CNN to do intracranial aneurysm detection and classification for 3D TOF MRA image. Specifically, our method first extracts a series of patches as the Region of Interests along the blood vessels from the original 3D TOF MRA 3D image. The corresponding MIP images of each ROI will be obtained through maximum intensity projecting. Then, we generate a series of 1D vectors by accumulating each MIP image along different directions. Meanwhile, a 1D CNN is established to detect aneurysms, in which, the input is the obtained 1D vectors and the output is the binary classification result denoting whether there are intracranial aneurysms in the considered patch. Generally, compared with 2D- and 3D-CNN, the 1D CNN-based way greatly accelerates the training and shows stronger robustness in the case of fewer samples. The efficiency of the proposed method outperforms the 2D CNN about 10 times in CPU training. Yet, their accuracies are close. (shrink)

In the current "Eastern culture fad" now engulfing the East Asian mainland, the Book of Changes, that repository of "shining mysteries" that symbolizes the special quality of East Asian culture, has attracted considerable attention. Over the past several thousand years, the Book of Changes has played an extremely important role in molding the foundation of China's great intellectual tradition. It is for this reason that this work has always been so highly regarded as "the first of the Six Classics," as (...) "one of the three mysteries." But the extent and depth of the present studies of the Book of Changes are unprecedented. The Book of Changes was first introduced to the West in the seventeenth century and, arousing the interest of Western scholars, was translated into one language after another. But never before have so many scholars in so many countries been so caught up in studying the Book of Changes as at present. The reason this work has attracted such universal attention is in part the particular conditions of the times and in part the timeless, lasting value of the Book of Changes itself. (shrink)

Mindfulness—the awareness of the present moment and experiences in daily life—contributes to genuine intrinsic and social-oriented values and curbs materialistic and hedonistic values. In the context of materialism, money is power. Avaricious individuals take risks and are likely to engage in dishonesty. Very little research has investigated the effects of mindfulness in reducing the avaricious monetary attitudes and enhancing ethical consumer beliefs. In this study, we theorize that mindfulness improves consumer ethics directly and indirectly by lowering avaricious monetary attitudes. To (...) test our theory, we collected data from 523 individuals with the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction training and 307 individuals without MBSR. The results of our whole sample support our theory. Three multiple-group confirmatory factor analyses reveal intriguing discoveries. First, with MBSR training, mindfulness excites consumer ethical beliefs directly and indirectly. Without training, trait mindfulness fails to reduce monetary attitudes—mindfulness training matters. Second, the power of MBSR training holds for participants completing the training within 1 year, but wears off after 1 year—the duration after training matters. Finally, after 1 year, the training retains its strength for those who practice mindfulness, but weakens its power for those who do not—practice matters. We shed light on mindfulness, monetary wisdom, and consumer ethics, in particular, and business ethics, in general. (shrink)

In this study, we developed a model of unethical behavior intentions, collected data from managers of the private (n = 208) and the public (n = 307) sectors in the Republic of Macedonia, and tested our model across these two sectors. Results suggested that for both sectors, unethical behavior intentions were not related to the love of money and corporate ethical values, whereas irritation was negatively related to life satisfaction. Moreover, corporate ethical values were related to life satisfaction for the (...) private sector only, whereas the love of money and unethical behavior intentions were related to irritation for the public sector only. Managers in the private sector had higher corporate ethical values, lower unethical behavior intentions, lower irritation, and higher life satisfaction than those in the public sector. There was no difference in the love of money. There were more bad apples in the public sector (34.85%) than in the private sector (23.56%). The strongest factor of unethical behavior intentions in the private and the public sectors was theft and corruption, respectively. Finally, for the culture-free (etic) model, the love of money was positively related to irritation. Corporate ethical values had a positive "double-whammy" effect: reducing irritation and enhancing life satisfaction. Unethical behavior intentions were positively related to irritation (a mediator), which was negatively related to life satisfaction. Our theory provides new insights regarding doing business in the Republic of Macedonia. (shrink)

Based on recent findings, we propose a framework for a relationship among attention, effort and optimal performance. Optimal performance often refers to an effortless and automatic, flow-like state of performance. Mindfulness regulates the focus of attention to optimal focus on the core component of the action, avoiding too much attention that could be detrimental for elite performance. Balanced attention is a trained state that can optimize any particular attentional activity on the dual-process spectrum.

Academics and practitioners have paid close attention to waste, energy, and resource management due to growing awareness of its effects on sustainable performance. This study aims to explore the status and challenges of efficient resource management in China, an under-researched area. Moreover, it proposes a theoretical framework to fill the academic and practical gap how efficient resource management practices can build sustainable performance. This study justifies the need to explore the need of efficient resource management practices in emerging economies like (...) China. Empirical data derived using a cross-sectional survey of 265 employees from oil and gas firms in China were used to test the theoretical framework developed from mainstream literature. Empirical findings of this study highlight the role of efficient resource management practices such as CSR, process and equipment, human resource practices, product design, and manufacturing planning which have a positive and significant impact on sustainable performance. In addition, innovative culture plays a moderating role in enhancing firms' sustainable performance. The findings suggest that there is further scope to utilize the efficient resource management practices for encouraging innovative culture to build sustainable performance. This study creates a basis for future research of building sustainable organizational performance by integrating efficient resource management practices. This study also highlights gaps in the system and provides insights into policymakers and manufacturing sector employees on holistically building a sustainable organization. (shrink)
