Representation of quantum states by statistical ensembles on the quantum phase space in the Hamiltonian form of quantum mechanics is analyzed. Various mathematical properties and some physical interpretations of the equivalence classes of ensembles representing a mixed quantum state in the Hamiltonian formulation are examined. In particular, non-uniqueness of the quantum phase space probability density associated with the quantum mixed state, Liouville dynamics of the probability densities and the possibility to represent the reduced states of bipartite systems by marginal distributions (...) are discussed in detail. These considerations are used to study ensembles of hybrid quantum-classical systems. In particular, nonlinear evolution of a single hybrid system in a pure state and unequal evolutions of initially equivalent ensembles are discussed in the context of coupled hybrid systems. (shrink)

Lagrangian formulation of quantum mechanical Schrödinger equation is developed in general and illustrated in the eigenbasis of the Hamiltonian and in the coordinate representation. The Lagrangian formulation of physically plausible quantum system results in a well defined second order equation on a real vector space. The Klein–Gordon equation for a real field is shown to be the Lagrangian form of the corresponding Schrödinger equation.

The codex Cromwellianus 12 , one of the most interesting astrological manuscripts of the Bodleian Library in Oxford, contains on p. 450 f., under the heading 'Ιμβρασίου 'Εεσίου περί ρρώστων, the first part of the first part of Ps.-Galen's περι κατακλίσεως νοσούντων, which is, together with a work of Hermes Trismegistos, our principal source for iatromathematics, that is, for diagnosis and prognosis based on certain constellations, above all on the Moon's position in a particular sign of the zodiac. In my paper, "berkeley's christian neo-Platonism" ("journal of the history of ideas", July, 1976) I had maintained that george berkeley was a christian neo-Platonist who believed that abstract ideas exist in the mind of god, And that God used these ideas as archetypes during creation. Robert mckim commented that berkeley considered abstract ideas to be logical impossibilities, And therefore did not believe them to exist in god's mind. My reply is that berkeley employs two different concepts of impossibility for two (...) different kinds of abstract ideas, Those that are logically impossible, And others that are impossible for humans to perceive due to limitations peculiar to the human mind. Consideration of the work of Sade in relation to Adorno usually refers to the much-discussed chapter from Dialektik der Aufklärung. But Adorno made a number of other remarks across his career that suggest a very different reading. I will discuss the three most significant of these remarks and show how they develop an approach to the libidinal aspect of aesthetic experience that challenges our understanding of the relation of thought and language. In doing so, Sade’s works indicate an extraordinary liberation (...) of the dialectic of natural-history through a mimesis of desire, which is made apparent in what Sade’s texts literally present; in their contingency and also their facticity. IN 1983 THE STUTTGART PUBLISHING FIRM OF PHILIPP RECLAM brought out a slim volume containing an introduction and seven essays by Robert Spaemann, then Professor of Philosophy at the University of Munich. Entitled Philosophische Essays, it presents and illustrates Spaemann’s philosophical project: to understand the phenomenon of modernity, to criticize the deficiencies of modern thought, and to preserve what is good in modernity by rehabilitating the teleological understanding of nature that modernity largely rejected. A second edition in 1994 included three (...) more essays. As little of Spaemann’s work has yet appeared in English, the aim of this paper is modest: to present as clearly and accurately as possible his position in the Philosophische Essays. (shrink)

In 1896 William James published an essay entitled The Will to Believe, in which he defended the legitimacy of religious faith against the attacks of such champions of scientific method as W.K. Clifford and Thomas Huxley. James's work quickly became one of the most important writings in the philosophy of religious belief. James Wernham analyses James's arguments, discusses his relation to Pascal and Renouvier, and considers the interpretations, and misinterpretations, of James's major critics. Wernham shows convincingly that James was unaware (...) of many destructive ambiguitities in his own doctrines and arguments, although clear and consistent in his view that our obligation to believe in theism is not a moral but a prudential obligation -- a foolish-not-to-believe doctrine, rather than a not-immoral-to-believe one. Wernham also shows that the doctrine is best read as affirming the wisdom of gambling that God exists, a notion which James failed to distinguish from believing and which, among other things, he explicitly identified with faith. James's pragmatism, a theory concerning the meaning of truth, is shown to be quite distinct from the doctrine of The Will to Believe. In concentrating on a careful analysis of this doctrine of the will-to-believe, Wernham not only makes a major contribution to understanding James's philosophy, but also clarifies issues in the philosophy of religion and in the analysis of belief and faith. ÖZ Geçmişi insanlık tarihi kadar eski olan iyilik yapma ve sevap kazanma duygusundan doğan vakıf, İslam ile birlikte hukuksal bir zemin kazanarak ebedi bir müessese haline gelmiştir. Sosyo-kültürel ve dini hizmetleri üstlenen vakıf ya da vakfa benzer fiiller yalnızca Müslümanlar arasında değil diğer dinlere mensup insanlar arasında da yaygın şekilde görülmekteydi. Örneğin Hint devletlerinde kralların din adamı olan Brahmanlara köyler hediye ettiği görülmektedir. Brahmanlar bu köylerin mülküne sahip olmamakta, köylüler tarafından işlenen toprakların gelirini almakta ve böylece varidat sahibi olmaktaydılar. Dârülislâm’da (...) gerek Müslüman gerekse de gayrimüslim tebaa tarafından kurulan vakıflar şerʻî hukuka bağlı olarak faaliyet göstermekteydi. Osmanlı Devleti’nin üç yüz yedi yıl hüküm sürdüğü Kıbrıs Adası’nda da aynı şerʻî hükümler bağlamında çok sayıda vakfın kurulduğu görülmektedir. Osmanlı Dönemi Kıbrıs vakıfları üzerine birçok çalışma yapılmasına rağmen bunlardan yalnızca biri gayrimüslim vakıflarını konu edinmektedir. Söz konusu çalışmada ise yalnızca yedi şahıs vakfı ele alınmakta ancak kiliselere ait fetih öncesi ve sonrası vakıflarına değinilmemektedir. Bu çalışmada işaret edilen söz konusu eksiklik üzerinde durulacaktır. Genel olarak KKTC Girne Milli Arşiv ve Araştırma Dairesinde bulunan Kıbrıs Şerʻiyye Sicilleri kaynak olarak alınmakla birlikte, Osmanlı Arşivi ve Vakıflar Genel Müdürlüğü Arşivinden tespit edilen belgeler analiz edilecektir. Öncelikle gayrimüslim ve zimmî kavramları açıklanarak Kıbrıs’ta bu kategoriye giren şahıslar ve bunların hukuki haklarına değinilip İslam hukukunda gayrimüslimlerin vakıf kurma hakları üzerinde durulacaktır. Diğer bir başlık altında iki tablo halinde verilen biri iptal edilmiş on bir şahıs vakfı ile farklı cemaatlere ait yirmi bir kilise ve manastır vakfı ayrıntılı olarak incelenecektir. (shrink)

In this article I present a comparative analysis of Schopenhauer’s concept of a human’s intelligible character and Sartre’s concept of a human’s fundamental project. My examination reveals that both Schopenhauer and Sartre posit a groundless, baseless choice of identity which unifies a human’s future conscious states into an integrated whole. I also identify the primary difference between the two accounts: Schopenhauer’s intelligible character is permanent, while Sartre’s theory of fundamental project is capable of being transformed or transcended. Last, I show (...) that the divergence on this point can be explained by the position the two philosophers hold with respect to the relationship of existence to essence. For Schopenhauer’s account, I use The World as Will and Representation, Vol. 1 and Vol. 2, and his Prize Essay on the Freedom of the Will. For the analysis of Sartre, I rely on Being and Nothingness and his biography of French writer Jean Genet, titled Saint Genet. (shrink)
