Machine Learning for Predicting Corporate Violations: How Do CEO Characteristics Matter?Ruijie Sun, Feng Liu, Yinan Li, Rongping Wang & Jing Luo - 2024 - Journal of Business Ethics 195 (1):151-166.
Based on upper echelon theory, we employ machine learning to explore how CEO characteristics influence corporate violations using a large-scale dataset of listed firms in China for the period 2010–2020. Comparing ten machine learning methods, we find that eXtreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) outperforms the other models in predicting corporate violations. An interpretable model combining XGBoost and SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) indicates that CEO characteristics play a central role in predicting corporate violations. Tenure has the strongest predictive power and is negatively (...)

Individual Auditor Conservatism After CSRC Sanctions.Jerry Sun, Steven F. Cahan & Jing Xu - 2016 - Journal of Business Ethics 136 (1):133-146.
This study examines whether sanctions imposed by the China Securities Regulatory Commission against individual auditors result in greater auditor conservatism. Using a difference-in-differences research design, we find that clients of sanctioned individual auditors have lower discretionary accruals in the post-sanction period than in the pre-sanction period when compared to a matched control group of clients audited by individual auditors who were not sanctioned. Our findings suggest that sanctions imposed by the CSRC on individual auditors can lead to improvements in audit (...)

This paper seeks to humanize the history of curriculum reform by exploring the diverse relationships that teachers form with the national curriculum system in South Korea. Drawing on the concepts of reflective and diffractive practices, we analyze the professional trajectories of two teachers across three decades of national curriculum changes. One teacher’s professional career reflects a commitment to aligning teaching methods with curriculum reforms, while the other teacher considers teaching as a political act, emphasizing a teacher’s interpretive and agential roles (...)

Burnout is a serious problem in the teaching profession. Research suggests that career calling could be regarded as a protective factor against burnout; however, the mediating mechanism underlying this relationship remains to be explored. The purpose of this study was to test the mediating roles of work engagement and teachers' psychological capital. A total of 3,300 teachers completed a self-report questionnaire. Results showed that the relationship between career calling and burnout was mediated by work engagement and teacher psychological capital. These (...)

An Improved Multibranch Convolutional Neural Network with a Compensator for Crowd Counting.Zhiyun Zheng, Zhenhao Sun, Guanglei Zhu, Zhenfei Wang & Junfeng Wang - 2022 - Complexity 2022:1-10.
Image-based crowd counting has extremely important applications in public safety issues. Most of the previous studies focused on extremely dense crowds. However, as the number of webcams increases, a crowd with extremely high density can obtain less error by summing the images of multiple close-range webcams, but there are still some problems such as heavy occlusions and large-scale variation. To solve the above problems, this paper proposes a new type of multibranch neural network with a compensator, in which features are (...)

When relating genomic data to survival outcomes, there are three main challenges that are the censored survival outcomes, the high-dimensionality of the genomic data, and the non-normality of data. We propose a method to tackle these challenges simultaneously and obtain a robust estimation of detecting significant genes related to survival outcomes based on Accelerated Failure Time model. Specifically, we include a general loss function to the AFT model, adopt model regularization and shrinkage technique, cope with parameters tuning and model selection, (...)

Effects of Priming Discriminated Experiences on Emotion Recognition Among Asian Americans.Sophia Chang & Sun-Mee Kang - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
This study explored the priming effects of discriminated experiences on emotion recognition accuracy of Asian Americans. We hypothesized that when Asian Americans were reminded of discriminated experiences due to their race, they would detect subtle negative emotional expressions on White faces more accurately than would Asian Americans who were primed with a neutral topic. This priming effect was not expected to emerge in detecting negative facial expressions on Asian faces. To test this hypothesis, 108 participants were randomly assigned to one (...)

A reciprocal relation has been identified between teacher emotion and teacher professional identity. However, the underlying mechanism explaining this complex interaction remains underexamined. Moreover, limited attention has been paid to the emotional dimension of student-teachers' development of professional identity during university coursework. To bridge this gap, the present study explores how student-teachers' emotions reciprocally interact with their professional identities, drawing data from questionnaires, reflections, and interviews with students taking courses related to language teaching in a teacher-training university.
