Critical social philosophy, Honneth and the role of primary intersubjectivity.Shaun Gallagher & Somogy Varga - 2012 - European Journal of Social Theory 15 (2):243-260.
Gesellschaftskritik, or social philosophy that aims to provide firm criticism of pathological social practices, requires normatively grounded evaluative principles. In this article, we assess different possibilities for such principles with focus on a model that takes specific patterns of intersubjective interaction as its point of reference. We argue that in order to understand the full significance of this ‘intersubjective turn’ for social philosophy, and to strengthen the normative foundation of social philosophy, we need to distinguish several levels of intersubjectivity and, (...)

    The Problem with 3-Year-Olds.S. Gallagher - 2015 - Journal of Consciousness Studies 22 (1-2):160-182.
I review a variety of theories that attempt to explain how young infants are able to pass spontaneous false belief tests, and then ask whether any of these approaches can explain the 3-year-olds' failure on standard, elicited FB tests. I argue that some of these approaches fail to provide adequate explanations, and I defend an embodied enactive approach that I think does a better job. The primary reason 3-year-olds fail at the elicited FB tests is not due to language problems, (...)

Becoming Inclusive: Actionable Steps to Diversify the Field of Clinical Ethics.Becket Gremmels, Colleen M. Gallagher, Thomas V. Cunningham, Amy Collard, Caroline Buchanan, Jamila Young, Sheridawn Peden & Barquiesha Madison - 2022 - Journal of Clinical Ethics 33 (4):323-332.
At the 2022 Clinical Ethics Unconference, the authors perceived a significant lack of racial and ethnic diversity, which was consistent with their experiences in other clinical ethics settings. As a result, they convened a working group to address the pervasive lack of diversity present in the field of clinical ethics and to propose strategies to increase the representation of people from racial and ethnic minority populations. This article identifies the harms associated with the lack of diversity in the healthcare setting (...)

Situating Interaction in Peripersonal and Extrapersonal Space: Empirical and Theoretical Perspectives.Shaun Gallagher - 2018 - In Annika Schlitte & Thomas Hünefeldt (eds.), Situatedness and Place: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on the Spatio-Temporal Contingency of Human Life. Cham: Springer Verlag. pp. 67-79.
In this chapter I focus on the relationship between embodied intersubjective interactions and the kind of spaces that shape and are shaped by such interactions. After clarifying some of the theoretical background involved in questions about social cognition, I review several empirical studies that suggest that social interactions and social relations can change our perceptions of the reachable space around us, as well as the more distant space beyond our immediate reach. These perceptions operate within the framework of material culture (...)

Evidence, Emotion and Eminence: A Qualitative and Evaluative Analysis of Doctors’ Skills in Macroallocation.Siun Gallagher, Miles Little & Claire Hooker - 2019 - Health Care Analysis 27 (2):93-109.
In this analysis of the ethical dimensions of doctors’ participation in macroallocation we set out to understand the skills they use, how they are acquired, and how they influence performance of the role. Using the principles of grounded moral analysis, we conducted a semi-structured interview study with Australian doctors engaged in macroallocation. We found that they performed expertise as argument, bringing together phronetic and rhetorical skills founded on communication, strategic thinking, finance, and health data. They had made significant, purposeful efforts (...)

I argue that Axel Honneth, reappropriated Colwyn Trevarthen's distinction between primary and secondary intersubjectivity, into his critical social theory. How the concept of primary intersubjectivity gets re-incorporated, or indeed, re-cognized in Honneth’s conception of recognition, however, is a complex issue that Iexplore in this essay. It is linked to questions not only about child development, but also about whether one should understand recognition in terms of a summons, following Fichte, or in terms of a struggle, as Honneth, following Hegel, suggests, or (...)

    Community in ‘Global’ Academies: The Critical Positioning of ‘Meta-Francophone’ Caribbeanists.Mary Gallagher - 2014 - Paragraph 37 (2):290-307.
Caribbeanists working on the Francophone Caribbean within the Anglophone academy are perhaps particularly well placed to bring into focus the linguistic and cultural losses of the dislocations and relocations of High Capitalism. Although our object of study should facilitate critical insights into the fundamental linguistic and cultural indifference and irresponsibility of capitalist extraction models and into what is at stake politically and ethically in contemporary versions of those profiteering models, the commercialist reductionism currently formatting not just our own pulverized academic (...)

My comments here are meant to highlight some important issues found in these articles and to offer some clarifications.

Extension and critique: A response to Robert Young.Shaun Gallagher - 1996 - Studies in Philosophy and Education 15 (4):323-328.
In response to Robert Young's critical comments concerning Hermeneutics and Education I clarify two issues. First, I suggest that a more detailed account of interpretation and learning could be developed in a hermeneutically informed cognitive psychology. This would be an account that escapes the textual model of silent reading construed as private mental experience, and that acknowledges the social and communicative dimensions of understanding. Second, in contrast to Young's view, I contend that phronesis is not reducible to a set of (...)

Exploring the Context of Fitness to Practise Concerns About Social Workers in England: Explanations Beyond Individuals.Ann Gallagher, Sarah Banks, Robert Jago, Magdalena Zasada, Zubin Austin & Anna van der Gaag - 2020 - Ethics and Social Welfare 14 (2):187-203.
There is a disproportionate number of complaints about social workers in England to the Health and Care Professionals Council (HCPC) as compared with the other health care professionals regulated by HCPC. This paper discusses findings from interviews and focus groups that formed part of a mixed methods study that aimed to find out the reasons for complaints and the strategies that may reduce complaints. Four themes were identified: social work as an evolving profession; social work involves challenging practice; social work (...)

Findings from a mixed‐methods pragmatic cluster trial evaluating the impact of ethics education interventions on residential care‐givers.Ann Gallagher, Matthew Peacock, Emily Williams, Magdalena Zasada & Anna Cox - 2021 - Nursing Inquiry 28 (2):e12383.
There has been little previous research regarding the effectiveness of ethics education interventions for residential care‐givers. The Researching Interventions to Promote Ethics in social care project responded to the question: Which is the most effective ethics education intervention for care‐givers in residential social care? A pragmatic cluster trial explored the impact of three ethics education interventions for: (a) interactive face‐to‐face ethics teaching; (b) reflective ethics discussion groups; and (c) an immersive simulation experience. There was also a control arm (d). 144 (...)

The following analysis demonstrates that G.H. Mead's understanding of human speech is remarkably consistent with today's interdisciplinary field that studies speech as a natural behavior with an evolutionary history. Mead seems to have captured major empirical and theoretical insights more than half a century before the contemporary field began to take shape. In that field the framework known as “Tinbergen's Four Questions,” developed in ecology to study naturally occurring behavior in nonhuman animals, has been an effective organizing framework for research (...)

Strategic intellectual property litigation, the right of publicity, and the attenuation of free speech: Lessons from the schwarzenegger bobblehead doll war (and peace).William T. Gallagher - manuscript
This article is part of a Symposium that examines the legal and policy issues raised by the Schwarzenegger bobblehead doll litigation, in which a Hollywood star-turned-governor sued under California's right of publicity laws and under federal copyright law to stop a small Ohio company from selling a bobblehead doll depicting Schwarzenegger in a business suit, with a bandolier of bullets, and brandishing an assault rifle. The article contends that defendants' unauthorized use of the Schwarzenegger image on dolls and their accompanying (...)

It considers the process by which a variety of professionals: engineers, scientists, designers, planners, architects and financial analysts, develop a professional norm of sustainability as they sustainably redevelop contaminated brownfield sites. Employees and associates of a private equity firm managing a portfolio of brownfield sites across North America and Western Europe were interviewed and resultant data were analyzed using grounded theory methodology. A framework for the professionalization (...)

    The Senses of a Bodily Self.Shaun Gallagher - 2019 - ProtoSociology 36:414-433.
I focus on the sense of ownership and ask whether this experience is something over and above one’s bodily experiences, or something intrinsic to them. I consider liberal, deflationary, and phenomenological accounts of the sense of ownership, and I offer an enactive or action-oriented account that takes the sense of ownership to be intrinsic to the phenomenal background and our various bodily senses, including the sense of agency.
