L’article propose une étude lexico-syntaxique de la polysémie du nom truc en français, qui connaît cinq types d’emplois différents, dont certains le rapprochent de noms sous-spécifiés et/ou de noms généraux. L’analyse s’appuie sur un vaste corpus de données attestées et sur une batterie de patrons syntaxiques permettant à la fois de départager et de caractériser les différentes acceptions du nom truc. Il est ainsi montré que chaque type d’emploi de ce nom en tant que Nss se caractérise par une construction (...) privilégiée, tout en en admettant une ou plusieurs autres. Il s’avère en effet que chacun des sens du substantif truc peut être défini par une conjonction de propriétés discriminantes de nature syntaxique et sémantique. (shrink)

Within intellectual history there has been a widening interest over the last decades in rediscovering intellectuals who used to be renowned when they were active, but who for various reasons have been more or less forgotten over time. The Swedish writer Ellen Key (1849–1926) was a famous intellectual who gained her reputation through books, pamphlets, and hundreds of lectures on topics such as pedagogy, peace, and women’s rights—topics that were at the top of a general intellectual agenda around 1900. I (...) will focus on her idea of internationalism that was founded on an evolutionary life philosophy of development. Her engagement in internationalism was built on an idealist foundation of philosophical, religious, and humanitarian beliefs organized around peace and a problematization of the nation. Key advocated a kind of patriotism as her path towards developing internationalism. In this article, Key’s work is contextualized and conceptualized in the discussion of internationalism of her contemporaries. (shrink)

“Each and every important work of art leaves traces behind in its material and technique,” Theodor W. Adorno postulates in Aesthetic Theory, as he describes the way a composition is both a result of its own time and reacts critically to the time it belongs to. This quote demonstrates a reversal: rather than merely an expression or an outcome of an artist’s idea, art itself is regarded as a source for change. The work may come to affect its own tools (...) and materials and the social space around it. The primary question of this article is: what is it in musical composition that leaves the traces? This article attempts to move the focus away from discussion of finished works, and instead, depict how composition as a discipline engages in dialogue with its handcraft, historicity, and surrounding social world. I call this aspect of composition that possesses critical potential a lingering reflection. Slow and heteronomous in its nature, it presents a counterpoint to ideas that seem solid, are easily accessible and unquestioned. (shrink)

Indicators of food sovereignty and food democracy center on people having the right and ability to define their food polices and strategies with respect to food culture, food security, sustainability and use of natural resources. Yet food sovereignty, like democracy, exists on multiple and competing scales, and policymakers and citizens often have different agendas and priorities. In passing a ban on the use of genetically-modified seeds in agriculture, Jackson County, Oregon has obtained some measure of food sovereignty. Between 2016 and (...) 2017 ethnographic research was undertaken in rural Southern Oregon where local community and State of Oregon priorities regarding the use of GMO crops are in conflict. This article presents ethnographic research findings about the expression and negotiation of multiple food sovereignties by civil society in rural southern Oregon and the State of Oregon via democratic processes. In particular, these findings illustrate the effects of socio-political power dynamics on local and state acts of food sovereignty, democracy and agrifood policy by analyzing what the different expressions of food sovereignty reveal for its implementation at the local level. El presente libro se plantea como el primer estudio diacrónico y panorámico sobre el pensamiento de la traducción de Jacques Derrida. Recorriendo tanto algunas de sus obras más relevantes como textos más desconocidos o de difícil acceso, este trabajo permite atravesar su pensamiento alrededor de la traducción. A su vez, se exploran otros conceptos derridianos relevantes para ensanchar los horizontes de la traductología, como el acontecimiento, la hauntología, las lógicas de lo im-posible o la hospitalidad. En paralelo, esta obra empieza (...) a trazar el mapa de la traductología deconstructiva, recoge las herencias y aportaciones más relevantes de las últimas cinco décadas y plantea las posibilidades que tiene esta línea de pensamiento en el panorama actual de las humanidades. Con una propuesta híbrida entre la traductología y la filosofía, esta obra arroja una luz nueva sobre el proyecto deconstructivo, atravesado por los espectros del "más de una lengua" y por la incesante labor de traducción. Aldo Leopold’s land ethic calls for an extension of ethical consideration to nonhuman components of the complex system he called “the land.” Although the basis for this extension was holistic, interpretations of Leopold’s holism leave one baffled at how he could see his land ethic as an extension of a system which recognizes individual human rights. Leopold’s critics and exponents alike have focused on the holism expressed in his definition of right and wrong. Both regard it as a working criterion (...) of morality to be applied directly to conduct, act by act. Both are mistaken. Leopold was an indirect holist, not a direct one. That is, he applied his holistic definition of right and wrong not as a role for judging conduct directly, case by case, but as a principle for judging conduct only indirectly by judging the roles, tastes, predilections, practices, and attitudes which influence it. Cosmopolitanism is a value-loaded concept that seems to become popular in intervals. The latest cosmopolitan period started after the end of the Cold War and the breakdown of the Soviet Union and concentrated mostly on aspects such as “a new world order”, and often with reference to Kant. It might be questioned if the cosmopolitan period still exists. Here it is suggested that a historical understanding of cosmopolitanism together with experience from later social and political experiences might give a new (...) perspective on the difficulties of creating a better world in a Kantian sense, including cosmopolitan education. Considering its history and taking concern of experience Kant’s cosmopolitanism still is relevant, not least in its broader sense. (shrink)

Siguiendo el precedente de Herder, con el término "averroísmo" se alude a una preponderancia de lo universal (ya la correspondiente subordinaciónde la individualidad) en la filosofía moral de Kant. Ciertamente, éste hizo de la universalidad la condición necesana de la eticidad. Ello colocó alas inclinaciones individuales, incluso a la misma felicidad, dentro de un egoísmo incompatible con la moralidad. La individualidad del hombre parecía eliminada del campo de la Etica. Sin embargo, ese "averroísmo" debe ser mitigado desde dos puntos de (...) vista: 1) De acuerdo con el "uso regulador" que Kant atribuye ala idea de libertad, las inclinaciones pasionales forman una experiencia exigida por la actividad racional libre. No son el fundamento de la moralidad, pero pueden secundarla positivamente como "sentimientos morales", originando una felicidad que, junto con la virtud, constituye el "sumo bien". O, de modo negativo, las inclinaciones pasionales son exigidas por el mismo deber, en la medida en que las domine y someta a la moralidad. De ambas formas, constituyen una experiencia emotiva individual que integra el mismo factum moral. 2) La libertad y la razón práctica brotan de la mente (Gemüt), que significa la "identidad oculta" y la "facultad radical" absolutamente individual que origina toda actividad racional.
