Plagiarism, Integrity, and Workplace Deviance: A Criterion Study.Daniel E. Martin PhD, Asha Rao & Lloyd R. Sloan - 2009 - Ethics and Behavior 19 (1):36-50.
Plagiarism is increasingly evident in business and academia. Though links between demographic, personality, and situational factors have been found, previous research has not used actual plagiarism behavior as a criterion variable. Previous research on academic dishonesty has consistently used self-report measures to establish prevalence of dishonest behavior. In this study we use actual plagiarism behavior to establish its prevalence, as well as relationships between integrity-related personal selection and workplace deviance measures. This research covers new ground in two respects: (a) That (...)

Reasonable Risk: Alcohol in Perspective.PhD Martinic & Barbara Leigh - 2004 - Routledge.
_Reasonable Risk_ examines the concept of risk as it applies to everyday life in general and to alcohol consumption specifically. The book addresses how we assess risks, and the strategies we use to manage them. It examines the elements that shape our perceptions of risk-cultural influences, social factors, and how we are presented with information about risk. The final chapter of the book focuses on the role of risk in policy formulation, examining in particular how alcohol policies are developed within (...)

A false dichotomy. Commentary on 'Clinical guidelines: ways ahead' (C. W. R. Onion and T. Walley, Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 4, 287–293, this issue). [REVIEW]Jeremy M. Grimshaw Mbchb Phd Mrcgp, M. Stuart Watson Mbchb Msc Mrcgp & Martin Eccles Mbbs Md Frcp Frcgp Mfphm - 1998 - Journal of Evaluation in Clinical Practice 4 (4):295-298.
SummaryThe dichotomy between ‘scientific’ and ‘practical’ approaches to guideline development is false and divisive. Instead we should concentrate on developing mechanisms to develop and implement valid guidelines to improve patient care. The development of valid guidelines requires considerable expertise and is time consuming and expensive. It is most efficiently done at a regional or national level. The implementation of valid guidelines requires local action including the identification and modification of valid guidelines and a coordinated evidence-based implementation strategy (Grimshaw & Eccles (...)

    Modely a modelování v biomedicíně.Martin Zach - 2021 - Dissertation, Charles University, Prague
Many scientific disciplines rely on the construction and use of models: biomedical sciences are no exception. This PhD thesis addresses several aspects of the practice of scientific modeling. First, I discuss the nature of modeling as such, proposing a novel, complementary account of scientific modeling which I term the experimentation-driven modeling account and which drives the construction of mechanistic models in many fields of biological and biomedical research, such as cancer immunology. Second, I scrutinize an objection to the mechanistic account (...)

Rethinking Subsidiarity: Multidisciplinary Reflections on the Catholic Social Tradition.Martin Schlag & Boglárka Koller (eds.) - 2024 - Springer Nature Switzerland.
This book takes a fresh and interdisciplinary approach to the concept of subsidiarity. While subsidiarity is commonly understood as an organizational principle that assigns competences to the appropriate level within an organization, its application extends beyond politics. This innovative book offers a comprehensive analysis that includes religious and secular perspectives, exploring the relevance of subsidiarity to society, business, law and politics. By bridging the gap between theology, philosophy, political science, law, and history, this volume fills a significant gap in the (...)

Circumstance anguish: an iatrophilosophical model for depresalgia.Martín L. Vargas-Aragón - 2024 - Estudios de Filosofía (Universidad de Antioquia) 70:201-224.
“Iatrophilosophy” is defined as the translational discipline between medicine and philosophy that has a double objective, theoretical and practical. It is presented a model of practical iatrophilosophy applied to chronic pain associated with depression and stress—depresalgia—, that expands Phenomenologic, Hermeneutic, Dynamic Psychotherapy (PHD) to the general medical field. It starts from the general model of the medical triad - disease, illness, and sickness- and, in the horizon of Ortega's anthropology, five nuclear metaphors are proposed: greed of the body, anguish of (...)

    Carl F. H. Henry on the Problem of (Good and) Evil.Edward N. Martin - 2019 - Perichoresis 17 (3):3-24.
Carl Henry devotes a few chapters directly (and a few indirectly) in volume 6 of his God, Revelation, and Authority [GRA] to the problem of evil [POE]. The author examines Henry’s contribution as a theologian, noting that GRA is a work of theology, not philosophy proper. However, Henry had a PhD in Philosophy (Boston, 1949), and one finds present several presuppositions and control beliefs that are philosophically motivated. Observation of the text reveals several of these. Chief here is Henry’s working (...)

Specifics of introducing a code of ethics into the academic environment.Iveta Kovalčíková, Jana Lukáčová & Martin Lačný - 2018 - Ethics and Bioethics (in Central Europe) 8 (1-2):91-108.
The implementation of tools and techniques of the management of ethics in the academic environment has its own peculiarities arising from the nature of the expert, scientific, pedagogical, but also administrative work of university staff, requiring a considerable degree of autonomy and freedom. The aim of this case study is to present the views of university teachers and PhD students from a selected faculty of a public university in Slovakia on the implementation of tools and techniques for the management of (...)

Capabilities and justice for people who lack the capacity for reason and rationality.Iva Martinić & Elvio Baccarini - 2023 - Filozofska Istrazivanja 43 (3):495-507.
In the article, we consider the objections of the capability approach to Rawls’s theory of public justification. The objection is that Rawls’s theory is considered with an exclusive focus on reason and rationality as essential properties of justice, excluding from the domain of justice people who do not possess these properties (such as people with severe cognitive impairments). We point out the shortcomings of the alternative proposal to the capability theory, which is based on the dignity of the species, because (...)

Animal dignity and sympathetic imagination: Martha Nussbaum and an analysis of the treatment of non-human animals.Iva Martinic - 2022 - Filozofija I Društvo 33 (1):218-232.
In this paper, I analyse Martha Nussbaum?s view of how we should treat non-human animals, which she links to her capabilities approach. This approach offers a conception of justice or, as Nussbaum puts it, a collection of fundamental rights that specify some of the necessary elements for a just society. In addition to justice for human beings, this approach includes animal rights. The basis for the discussion consists of two elements that justify the claim that every animal deserves to live (...)

It describes the current situation of military AI ethics as following that of AI ethics in general, caught between consequentialism and deontology. Virtue ethics serves as an alternative that can address some of the weaknesses of these dominant forms of ethics. The essay describes how the articles in the issue exemplify the value of virtue-related approaches for these questions, before ending with thoughts for further research.

Did Chinese mysticism vanish after its first appearance in ancient Taoist philosophy, to surface only after a thousand years had passed, when the Chinese had adapted Buddhism to their own culture? This first integrated survey of the mystical dimension of Taoism disputes the commonly accepted idea of such a hiatus. Covering the period from the Daode jing to the end of the Tang, Livia Kohn reveals an often misunderstood Chinese mystical tradition that continued through the ages.
