Rounding, work intensification and new public management.Eileen Willis, Luisa Toffoli, Julie Henderson, Leah Couzner, Patricia Hamilton, Claire Verrall & Ian Blackman - 2016 - Nursing Inquiry 23 (2):158-168.
In this study, we argue that contemporary nursing care has been overtaken by new public management strategies aimed at curtailing budgets in the public hospital sector in Australia. Drawing on qualitative interviews with 15 nurses from one public acute hospital with supporting documentary evidence, we demonstrate what happens to nursing work when management imposesroundingas a risk reduction strategy. In the case study outlined rounding was introduced across all wards in response to missed care, which in turn arose as a result (...)

The impact of rationing of health resources on capacity of Australian public sector nurses to deliver nursing care after‐hours: a qualitative study.Julie Henderson, Eileen Willis, Luisa Toffoli, Patricia Hamilton & Ian Blackman - 2016 - Nursing Inquiry 23 (4):368-376.
Australia, along with other countries, has introduced New Public Management (NPM) into public sector hospitals in an effort to contain healthcare costs. NPM is associated with outsourcing of service provision, the meeting of government performance indicators, workforce flexibility and rationing of resources. This study explores the impact of rationing of staffing and other resources upon delivery of care outside of business hours. Data was collected through semistructured interviews conducted with 21 nurses working in 2 large Australian metropolitan hospitals. Participants identified (...)

What can we learn (and not learn) from thought experiments in black hole thermodynamics?Patricia Palacios & Rawad El Skaf - 2022 - Synthese 200 (6):1-27.
Scientists investigating the thermal properties of black holes rely heavily on theoretical and non-empirical tools, such as mathematical derivations, analogue experiments and thought experiments. Although the use of mathematical derivations and analogue experiments in the context of black hole physics has recently received a great deal of attention among philosophers of science, the use of thought experiments (TEs) in that context has been almost completely neglected. In this paper, we will start filling this gap by systematically analyzing the epistemic role (...)

There is a well-known scene from The Adventures of Tom Sawyer that illustrates what might be considered benign manipulation: Tom has the job of whitewashing a fence but would rather spend the time with friends. By feigning enthusiasm for the job he manages to get his friends to hang around and do it for him. They even pay to do it - with various little items that he later trades for..

Bioethics and the Whole: Pluralism, Consensus, and the Transmutation of Bioethical Methods into Gold.Patricia A. Martin - 1999 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 27 (4):316-327.
In 1785, George Washington described a “knowing farmer” as “one who can convert every thing he touches into manure, as the first transmutation towards Gold.” With these words, Washington linked the “knowing farmer” to the alchemist who endeavored to transform base metals into gold with the aid of a philosopher's stone. In each instance, the challenge was to convert raw materials into something new and precious.Today, the “knowing bioethicist” is in a similar position. American bioethics harbors a variety of ethical (...)

Beyond prejudice: Relational inequality, collective action, and social change revisited.John Dixon, Mark Levine, Steve Reicher & Kevin Durrheim - 2012 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 35 (6):451-466.
This response clarifies, qualifies, and develops our critique of the limits of intergroup liking as a means of challenging intergroup inequality. It does not dispute that dominant groups may espouse negative attitudes towards subordinate groups. Nor does it dispute that prejudice reduction can be an effective way of tackling resulting forms of intergroup hostility. What it does dispute is the assumption that getting dominant group members and subordinate group members to like each other more is the best way of improving (...)

In this paper we set out to explore the claims that corporate social responsibility (CSR) itself is little more than a complementary extension of the project of coloniality initiated by the Enlightenment (e.g. Banerjee 2019). We will not dispute that claim. Rather we will develop three points. First, we will apply a non-linear, systems approach to demonstrate how we all, of any color, ethnic origin or historical location are all part of an interconnected interrelated sets of systems—what some thinkers call (...)

Unobtrusive mobilization by an institutionalized rape crisis center: “All we do comes from victims”.Patricia Yancey Martin & Frederika E. Schmitt - 1999 - Gender and Society 13 (3):364-384.
This case study of unobtrusive mobilizing by Southern California Rape Crisis Center uses archival, observational, and interview data to explore how a feminist organization worked to change police, schools, prosecutor, and some state and national organizations from 1974 to 1994. Mansbridge's concept of street theory and Katzenstein's concepts of unobtrusive mobilization and discursive politics guide the analysis. SCRCC's theme of “All We Do Comes from Victims” reflects the source of its initiatives, that is, victims who came to them for help. (...)

Para isso, sugere-se uma interpretação acerca do entrelaçamento entre mito e esclarecimento, durante o processo de civilização ocidental, indicando que os argumentos de Adorno e Horkheimer tomam a modernidade como um projeto fundamentalmente masculino. This article aims to interpret the book Dialectic of Enlightenment and its main arguments considering the masculine domination which permeates the modern rationality. ABSTRACT This article presents the analysis of a data sample collected from a survey conducted with Brazilian and Portuguese youngsters. Our aim was to identify textual supports used for literary reading, as well as the authors and works most read by this public so that we may reflect upon the influences subjacent to those choices. To do so, we analyzed the answers given to a questionnaire applied to students in the last year of High School, in both contexts. This is (...)

This paper explores the presence of correspondances and allegory in Walter Benjamin's thoughts on the poetry of Charles Baudelaire. It compares these (...)

    The Purpose of the Proof of Pragmatism in Peirce’s 1903 Lectures on Pragmatism.Patricia A. Turrisi - 1992 - The Monist 75 (4):521-537.
A proof of pragmatism is proposed in Peirce's 1903 lecture series on Pragmatism as a Principle and Method of Right Thinking. It is necessary first to define what pragmatism is, a task for which a practitioner of the pragmatic maxim would be fitted, but which, however, must be highly problematic to a potential practitioner who does not yet know its full meaning. In order to clarify its meaning, Peirce uses a method he recommends for such conundrums in his 1891 article, (...)

ABSTRACT Ferdinand de Saussure, Mikhail Bakhtin, and Émile Benveniste came from different countries and continents; these authors coexisted throughout the 20th century, leaving a significant legacy for linguistic thought-a heritage that continues to shape and influence contemporary academic discourse. Besides their roles as linguists and philosophers of language, another shared characteristic binds them together: their commitment to education. Throughout their careers, all three were dedicated educators. This article explores the biographical intricacies that unite and set apart this trio towards linguistic (...)
