El siguiente artículo fue presentado en la conferencia realizada en Buenos Aires, Argentina el día 3 de noviembre, 2011 celebrando el centenario de la publicación de los Relatos del Padre Brown.

Since 1989 there has been an ongoing controversy about the limits of public discussion of bioethical issues in the German-speaking world. While a number of scholars have been involved, Peter Singer and Helga Kuhse have been the principal targets of those seeking to limit bioethical debates. Those who have supported silencing discussion of certain issues have argued that such public discussion leads to a loss of freedom. In the article we argue that toleration is not based on subjectivism but rather (...) on reason. Furthermore, the efforts to suppress debate are often based on a failure to understand our position. Such efforts at suppression also rest on an elitist view of society that must assume that the general public cannot debate such topics. (shrink)

The paper outlines the essential developments in Spanish philosophy of the 20th century. It shows the Spanish philosophy appering on the European philosophical arena as late as at the beginning of the 20th century and as related to the criticism of the project of the European modernity. The grounds of the marginalization of Spain in the frame of modern European philosophy are not to be looked for only in modern Spanish history, but also in one-sideness of the European conception of (...) the history of philosophy, which gave priviledges to philosophical systems and excluded a wide range of other forms od reflection transcending this context. Following from the two historical turning points four periods in the development of the Spanish philosophy of the 20th century are determined: 1. the philosophy of modernism and its criticism , 2. the philosophy in the "silent period" , 3. the philosophy in the period of transition to democracy and 4. the contemporary philosophy. This paper uses the exchanges between the lovers Dido and Aeneas in Aeneid IV to undercut the pretensions of Stoic philosophers to lead a dispassionate, imperturbable life under the sole guidance of “reason.” It takes Aeneas as an example of Stoicism’s lawyer-like, falsified rationality—“I will say just a few words in regard to this matter [pro re]” (IV 336)—and Dido as an example of someone who, though under the sway of furor, nevertheless makes honest, reasoned arguments that are continuous with (...) the feelings she is experiencing. The point is not that one is more at fault than the other but the rather more radical thesis that with his Aeneas character Virgil is showing that Stoicism’s ataraxia and apatheia are inevitably dissimulation, inevitably fake. The article presents a new theory for the subdivision of human thought into four domains that are experientially and operationally discrete and are elaborated by activity in four anatomically definable areas of the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex. I propose that these areas constitute the Social, Material, Temporal anddivisions of the mind and that their sequential maturation accounts for the cognitive stages of childhood. The Social Mind ) is responsible for our emotional intelligence. The Temporal Mind enables us to contemplate the future (...) in terms of a sequence of manageable sub-goals. The Material Mind is responsible for our practicality. The Abstract Mind enables us to comprehend possibility and generate hypotheses. Because recent neurogenetical studies show the powerful influence of genes in controlling the size of the areas of Brodmann, I suggest further that variation in the size of these areas provides an explanation for the genetic basis of personality and many of the so-called cultural differences apparent between long-isolated human populations.
