On the supposition that one’s ethics and politics are fundamentally dignitarian in a broadly Kantian sense—as specifically opposed to identitarian and capitalist versions of Statism, e.g., neoliberal nation-States, whether democratic or non-democratic—hence fundamentally non-coercive and non-violent, then is self-defense or the defense of innocent others, using force, ever rationally justifiable and morally permissible or obligatory? We think that the answer to this hard question is yes; correspondingly, in this essay we develop and defend a theory about the permissible use of (...) force in a broadly Kantian dignitarian moral and political setting, including its extension to non-violent civil disobedience in the tradition of Martin Luther King, Jr; and perhaps surprisingly, we also import several key insights from Samurai and Martial Arts ethics into our theory. This paper provides an analysis of Rudolph Otto's understanding of the structures of human consciousness making possible the appropriation of revelation. Already in his dissertation on Luther's understanding of the Holy Spirit, Otto was preoccupied with how the " outer " of revelation could be united to these inner structures. Later, in his groundbreaking Idea of the Holy, Otto would explore the category of the numinous, an element of religious experience tied to the irrational element of (...) the holy. This paper first provides a brief account of Otto's account of the holy, especially its numinous, irrational elements. Second, the paper analyzes Otto's understanding of the structures of consciousness grounding the experience of the numinous and allowing the irrational element to be " schematized " by the rational element. Otto's exposition of these structures is heavily influenced by his reception of Kant's analysis of the two stems of human cognition, namely understanding and sensibility, and their possible relation to a common root, which Otto identified with what the mystics called the ground of the soul. Yet it is in Otto's reception of Kant's Critique of Judgment that all of these ideas find their completion, and it is here where we must look to understand the relation between the religious a priori and Otto's category of the numinous. Kant's aesthetic idea is a singular representation given in intuition; it is infinitely saturated and as such intimates the ideas of God, the soul, and the world as a whole. I show how Otto appropriates Kant's aesthetic idea and its relation to ideas of reason in order to make sense of how an empirically given revelation, for instance, an experience of the numinous, can connect with the inner structures of consciousness and thereby have the singular import that it does. La denominada "semiótica" viquiana se transforma a sí misma en una "sematología" de la "representación histórica".This paper intends to show how Vico sets himself to shape a figurative representation on the basis of the philosophy of wit. In der deutschen Geistesgeschichte wurde seit Hegel und Hölderlin die Geschichte als tragischer Prozess verstanden. Ein Drama wie die Antigone des Sophokles sollte als das vollkommenste Werk der Kunst die griechische Deutung des Miteinanders der Menschen und der Götter zeigen. Hegel legte aber dar, dass die Antigone mit den Reigen ihrer Chöre auf einer modernen Bühne nicht aufführbar sei. Doch zehn Jahre nach seinem Tod dirigierte sein Hörer Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy in Potsdam und Berlin seine Vertonung der Antigone. Hölderlins Sophokles-Übertragungen erhielten (...) eine harte Kritik; im Zeitalter des Expressionismus griff man aber auf ihre ausdrucksvolle Sprache zurück. Als nach den Zerstörungen des Zweiten Weltkriegs gleich ein weiterer Krieg drohte, brachte Carl Orff seine Vertonung von Hölderlins Antigonä auf die Bühne. Martin Heidegger, der selber das erste Standlied der Antigone übersetzt und ausgelegt hatte, gratulierte Orff bei einer Münchener Aufführung zur 'Wiedererweckung der antiken Tragödie'. Bertolt Brecht stellte seine Bearbeitung der Antigone gegen Orffs Mythisierung. Als man diese Bearbeitung im Oktober 1989 in Ost-Berlin spielte, bejubelte das Publikum Antigones Wort an Kreon: 'Weniger (Menschen) sind es (in der DDR) geworden, seit du herrschst'. Auch in den Ruinen von Kabul wurde Antigone gezeigt. John Cranco brachte ein Antigone-Ballett ein, als er das Stuttgarter Ballett zum Weltruhm führte. Ein Maler wie Werner Scholz, einst durch die Brücke beeinflusst, zeigte Antigone auf Ölbildern. Dabei ging es, wie Hans-Georg Gadamer formulierte, nicht mehr um die überlebensgroßen Erscheinungen der Götter Homers. Schon die tragische Bühne und dann das gemalte Bild zeigten den Geschlagenen und Leidenden als den ganz menschlichen Menschen. So führt Antigones Tragödie die Menschen vor ihr Schicksal und zeigt, was Geschichte ist. (shrink)

Hillel Steiner’s applied theory of territorial rights is part of his broader left-libertarian theory of rights. Steiner believes that all individuals have the libertarian right to self-ownership and to an equal share of the value of (global) natural resources. He thus views territorial rights as being ultimately reducible to the lower-level rights of free and equal individuals. This view challenges most accounts of nationalism (and territorial collectivism) as well as the normative theories of state sovereignty based on them. It thus (...) offers new perspectives on such issues as secession, immigration, and global justice. This article showcases how these ideas generate normative guidelines for solving territorial disputes. Among his concrete institutional proposals, relevant for the contemporary debate, is a globally distributed universal basic income (UBI) funded by the global taxation of natural resources. (shrink)

“Tanzanya’da Leibzig Misyoner Cemiyeti Misyonerliği, Karşılaşılan Zorluklar ve Kullanılan Yöntemler” isimli makale “Tanzanya’da Misyonerlik Faaliyetler Lutheran Kilise Örneği” isimli yüksek lisans tezine dayanmaktadır. Makale, Lutheran misyonerliğinin Tanzanya’da faaliyetlerine nasıl başladıkları, ilerleme yöntemleri ve karşılaşılan güçlükleri anlama noktasında önem arz etmektedir. Makalede ana konuya odaklanmadan önce, Tanzanya hakkında genel bir bilgilendirme yapılmış, ardından Leibzig Misyon Cemiyeti’nin (LMS) faaliyetlerine nasıl başladığı, kronolojik bir şekilde açmış olduğu istasyonlar, bu istasyonlarda karşılaşmış olduğu zorluklar ve kullanılan yöntemler hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Ayrıca, Tanzanya’da Lutheran misyoner cemiyetlerinin, (...) Tanzanya Evanjelik Lutheran Kilisesi (Tanzania Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania) ELCT ile tek bir kilise çatı altında toplanması ele alınmıştır. Son olarak, ELCT’nin kabul etmiş olduğu ilkeler ve Martin Luther’in öğretilerinin Afrika’daki yansımaları üzerinde durulmuştur. Makale, sadece misyonerleri ve misyonerlik faaliyetlerini değil, ayrıca muhatap olunan ve yüzyıllardır sömürgeleştirilen Afrika halkını anlamamıza da yardımcı olmaktadır. Araştırma, Lutheran misyonerliğinin Tanzanya’da başlamış olduğu 19. yüzyıl sonu ve yoğunlaştığı 20. yüzyıl ile sınırlandırılmıştır. Otto von Bismarck’ın (1815-1898) katkılarıyla gerçekleşen Berlin Konferansı sayesinde, batılı ülkelerin bayrakları ile haçları da sömürge topraklarına girmiştir. Tanzanya'da Lutheran Misyon, Johann Ludwig Krapf (1810-1881) ve Johannes Rebmann'ın (1820-1876) CMS tarafından görevlendirilmeleri sonucu başlamıştır. LMS, CMS'den 1892 tarihinde görevi devralmıştır ve Machame, Mamba, Old Moshi, Pare, Meru'da faaliyet göstermiştir. Misyon faaliyetleri süresince, savaşlar, kıtlık ve salgın, çok eşlilik, sünnet uygulaması, tanrı anlayışı gibi birçok zorlukla karşılaşılmıştır. Zorluklar, onları ortadan kaldırmaya yardımcı olacak; eğitim, sağlık, bütüncül hizmet, ortak dil (lingua franca), Kutsal Kitap çevirileri, ev ziyaretleri, yerli yardımcılar ve yerlileştirme gibi yöntemleri de beraberinde getirmiştir. Tanzanya’da LMS dışında; Katolik Kutsal Ruh Babaları (Holy Ghost Father/ Spiritanlar), Katolik Beyaz Babalar (Peres Blancs), Katolik Benediktinler, Anglikan Kilise Misyon Topluluğu (Chuch Missionary Society) CMS, Anglikan Üniversitelerin Orta Afrika Misyonu (The Universities’ Mission to Central Africa) UMCA gibi misyon grupları mevcuttur. Tanzanya'da bulunan Lutheran Misyon toplulukları, Evanjelik Lüteriyen Kilisesi (ELCT) adı altında 1963 yılında tek bir çatı altında toplanmıştır. ELCT bugün 5,2 milyon üyesi ile Tanzanya nüfusu içinde hatırı sayılır bir yere sahiptir. Bu çalışmada, deskriptif yöntem kullanılmıştır. Ulaşılabilen tüm ilk kaynaklara inilerek Lutheran misyonerler ve Tanzanya hakkında bilgi verilmiştir. Çalışmada Türkçe kaynaklara yer verilmekle birlikte yabancı kaynak kullanımına ve misyon topluluklarının bilinen kısaltmalarının kullanılmasına önem gösterilmiştir. (shrink)

Pope Benedict XVI's lecture at the University of Regensburg recently showed that liberal theology is not only an epoch of the past. Now it also serves as a disputable alternative among rivalling understanding of Christianity. This essay, however, demonstrates its timeliness on the basis of Wilhelm Herrmann's and Rudolf Otto's analyses of Luther, which have received little attention in research concerning liberal theology. Far beyond hero worship, their interpretations can be regarded as exemplary forms of a methodically deliberated (...) culture of remembrance. It also plays a central role in both authors' oeuvres. In addition, this case study demonstrates that the reconstruction of intellectual history and systematic concepts can be mutually relevant and productive. While Herrmann receives important contributions from Luther for a contemporary Christology, Otto develops a theory of religious experience in a nutshell based on the reformer's view of the Holy Spirit.
