Efforts to improve the means to diagnose and treat human genetic diseases have a long history in biomedical research and medicine. Now, preimplantation genetic diagnosis provides a new way to prevent the transmission of certain types of human genetic diseases to the next generation. It is an alternative to elective termination of pregnancies.PGD is used to test for genetic diseases that are due to defective single genes or abnormal chromosomes within days of fertilization and prior to the establishment of pregnancy. (...) The procedure essentially begins with the biopsy of one or more cells of a cleavage stage or blastocyst stage preimplantation human embryo that has been produced by in vitro fertilization. In certain cases, PGD can be done on polar bodies—discarded by-products of egg formation containing excess chromosomes—of unfertilized eggs. The article examines the food-implications that Augustine assigns to the different groups catalogued in the unfinished work De haeresibus. The aim isto check whether eating habits (and, if so, what eating habits) could be a criterion of heretical identity and identification. On concluding the examination it was found that the eating habits identified by Augustine are a very significant component (and sometimes even discriminatory) used to determine the heretical character of individual dissident groups. However, this same plurality of eating habits (...) which sometimes oppose each other, cannot be reduced to a single paradigm which is able to define the quid faciat hereticum in a broader and more comprehensive manner. In Augustine‟s mind, the heretical identity (and identification) is not reducible to a standard and unique formula. (shrink)

In this paper, we discuss the prevailing view amongst philosophers and many mathematicians concerning mathematical proof. Following Cellucci, we call the prevailing view the “axiomatic conception” of proof. The conception includes the ideas that: a proof is finite, it proceeds from axioms and it is the final word on the matter of the conclusion. This received view can be traced back to Frege, Hilbert and Gentzen, amongst others, and is prevalent in both mathematical text books and logic text books.

El interés en las potencialidades inexploradas del alumno de educación preescolar, así como de los recursos clásicos y contemporáneos inexplotados en este nivel educativo basan la presente investigación. Este artículo describe, analiza y expone los resultados al aplicar el cuento como una estrategia didáctica sistematizada que posibilita procesos de aprehensión al concepto de negociación y su uso en la resolución de conflictos en alumnos de 3º. de preescolar de la ciudad de San Luis Potosí. La selección minuciosa de una obra, (...) su lectura y reflexión en el grupo focal fue el punto de partida de la investigación organizada en tres fases: exploración, identificación y concienciación. Los alumnos trabajaron bajo consignas fundamentales, desarrollaron procesos metacognitivos y colaboraron entre sí para la obtención de un fin común. A la luz del juicio de expertos entre otros instrumentos de validez y confiabilidad de datos se deja ver el impacto favorable de esta estrategia en el aprendizaje, la imperante necesidad de innovación en las prácticas pedagógicas actuales y los alcances del uso de un recurso tan cercano pero olvidado como lo es el cuento. On March 8, 1987, the Sandinista Liberation Front published its statement on the relation of women's struggles to the Nicaraguan revolution. The author argues that this official statement is consistent with the views of modern feminists on some key points relating to the need to eliminate women's double day, promote women's self-organization, and wage an ideological struggle against sexism if women's subordination is to be eliminated. The author believes that the Sandinista Front's emphasis on ideological struggle and political organization represents (...) an important break with more economistic, orthodox Marxist approaches to analyzing the condition of women and has important implications for Marxist feminism. Drawing on an analysis of German national cybersecurity policy, this paper argues that cybersecurity has become a key site in which states mobilize science and technology to produce state power. Contributing to science and technology studies work on technoscience and statecraft, I develop the concepts of “territorialization projects” and “digital territory” to capture how the production of state power in the digital age increasingly relies on technoscientific expertise about information infrastructure, shifting tasks of government into the domain of computer scientists (...) and network engineers. The notion of territorialization projects describes states’ ongoing struggle to mobilize science and engineering in order to transform globally distributed information infrastructure into bounded national territory and invest it with patriotic meaning: making digital territory. Digital territory, in other words, is nationalized information infrastructure: it includes building and monopolizing infrastructure as well as normative ideas about nation—who is a digital citizen, and who isn’t; or what constitutes “good” and “bad” digital citizens. Nationalizing information infrastructure and placing statecraft into the hands of scientists and engineers might indicate an emerging form of “techno-nationalism”—a combination of nationalist and technocratic tendencies—raising urgent questions for STS scholarship to investigate the consequences of territorialization projects for justice, democracy, and civic life. This paper revisits some of Chateaubriand’s critical considerations with regard to representing our reasoning practices in logic and mathematics by means of “idealized syntax”. I focus on the persistently critical side of these considerations which aim to prepare the ground for “an interesting epistemology of logic and mathematics” that ought to make room for understanding the pragmatic dimensions of proofs as explanatory rational displays. First, I discuss the 20th century “syntactic conception” of the logical and the underlying set of values (...) it upholds. Secondly, I revisit the syntactic constraints on systematizing our formal forms of reasoning and ask about the relationship between “idealized” proofs construed as “syntactic objects” and the variety of formal forms of reasoning with its uses of the logical by the research mathematician. Finally, I consider the reasons why Chateaubriand thinks the syntactic requirements of “logical rigor” cannot be fulfilled, and why they ought not to be on the agenda. I conclude my paper by pointing to a deeper assumption which needs to be critically revisited as it stands in the way to what the author envisages as an “interesting epistemology of logic and mathematics”.O presente artigo reconsidera algumas das considerações críticas de Chateaubriand com relação a representar nossa prática de raciocínios em lógica e matemática por meio de uma “sintaxe idealizada”. Concentro-me no aspecto invariavelmente crítico dessas considerações, que têm por objetivo preparar o terreno para “uma epistemologia interessante da lógica e da matemática”, a qual deve abrir caminho para a compreensão da dimensão pragmática de provas como exibição racional explicativa. Em primeiro lugar, discuto a “concepção sintática” da noção de lógica do século XX e o conjunto de valores que ela sustenta. Em segundo lugar, eu reconsidero as restrições sintáticas impostas à sistematização de nossos raciocínios formais e pergunto sobre a relação entre provas “idealizadas” construídas como “objetos sintáticos” e a variedade de modos formais de raciocínios com os seus usos do lógico pelos pesquisadores em matemática. Por fim, eu considero as razões pelas quais Chateaubriand pensa que os requisitos sintáticos do “rigor lógico” não podem ser satisfeitos, e por que eles não deveriam ser parte da agenda. Concluo meu artigo apontando uma assunção mais profunda que precisa ser reconsiderada criticamente uma vez que ela representa um obstáculo àquilo que o autor vislumbra como uma “epistemologia interessante da lógica e da matemática”. What kind of inquiry is management science? This paper compares two accounts — realist-oriented and constructivist-oriented — and proposes a third position. The realist view that scientific inquiry seeks knowledge of realities independent and outside of the knowing process is set against the constructivist view that scientific theorising creates accounts which develop our discourses without claiming knowledge of ‘deeper’ realities. It argues that ultimately we have no way of resolving this long-standing dispute. To move beyond the impasse it proposes a (...) trusting constructivist position, arguing that responsible theorising requires that inquirers develop discursive accountability and that the process of inquiry matters as much as its content. Finally it explores what such a view of accountability would mean for the relationship between scientists or ‘professionals’ and users of their research findings in organisations. (shrink)
