The majority of traditional students enrolled at most colleges and universities are a part of what has been termed the Millennial Generation, also known as Generation Y, which typically describes the group of individuals born in most of the 1980s and 1990s. This cohort’s life has been shaped by corporate scandals, economic instability, and worldwide tragedies. Concurrently, business ethics has become a popular topic in the news within the last 2 decades due to the increase in the number of high-profile (...)

Building Effective Mentoring Relationships During Clinical Ethics Fellowships: Pedagogy, Programs, and People.Trevor M. Bibler, Ryan H. Nelson, Bryanna Moore, Janet Malek & Mary A. Majumder - 2024 - HEC Forum 36 (1):1-29.
How should clinical ethicists be trained? Scholars have stated that clinical ethics fellowships create well-trained, competent ethicists. While this appears intuitive, few features of fellowship programs have been publicly discussed, let alone debated. In this paper, we examine how fellowships can foster effective mentoring relationships. These relationships provide the foundation for the fellow’s transition from novice to competent professional. In this essay, we begin by discussing our pedagogical commitments. Next, we describe the structures our program has created to assist our (...)

“Concept” is a useful concept in developmental research.Katherine Nelson - 2011 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 31 (2):96-101.
Concepts have been a focus of research in developmental psychology for more than 50 years, although the target article does not refer to these uses of the concept of “concept.” I summarize some of the developmental research that is relevant to the issues raised. Cognitive content, concepts as internal products of memory, and the relation of internal concepts to language learning are pointed out important problems in considering the usefulness of the construct in psychology. 2012 APA, all rights reserved).

Improving student success in chemistry through cognitive science.JudithAnn R. Hartman, Eric A. Nelson & Paul A. Kirschner - 2022 - Foundations of Chemistry 24 (2):239-261.
Chemistry educator Alex H. Johnstone is perhaps best known for his insight that chemistry is best explained using macroscopic, submicroscopic, and symbolic perspectives. But in his writings, he stressed a broader thesis, namely that teaching should be guided by scientific research on how the brain learns: cognitive science. Since Johnstone’s retirement, science’s understanding of learning has progressed rapidly. A surprising discovery has been when solving chemistry problems of any complexity, reasoning does not work: students must apply very-well-memorized facts and algorithms. (...)

Maternal request caesareans and COVID-19: the virus does not diminish the importance of choice in childbirth.Elizabeth Chloe Romanis & Anna Nelson - 2020 - Journal of Medical Ethics 46 (11):726-731.
It has recently been reported that some hospitals in the UK have placed a blanket restriction on the provision of maternal request caesarean sections as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Pregnancy and birthing services are obviously facing challenges during the current emergency, but we argue that a blanket ban on MRCS is both inappropriate and disproportionate. In this paper, we highlight the importance of MRCS for pregnant people’s health and autonomy in childbirth and argue that this remains crucial during (...)

‘Barons’ Wars, under Other Names’: Feudalism, Royalism and the American Founding.Eric Nelson - 2017 - History of European Ideas 43 (2):198-214.
SUMMARYThe Machiavellian Moment was largely responsible for establishing what remains the dominant understanding of American Revolutionary ideology. Patriots, on this account, were radical whigs; their great preoccupation was a terror of crown power and executive corruption. This essay proposes to test the whig reading of patriot political thought in a manner suggested by Professor Pocock's pioneering first book, The Ancient Constitution and the Feudal Law. The whig tradition, as he taught us, located in the remote Saxon past an ‘ancient constitution’ (...)

    Understanding entropy.Peter G. Nelson - 2021 - Foundations of Chemistry 24 (1):3-13.
A new way of understanding entropy as a macroscopic property is presented. This is based on the fact that heat flows from a hot body to a cold one even when the hot one is smaller and has less energy. A quantity that determines the direction of flow is shown to be the increment of heat gained divided by the absolute temperature. The same quantity is shown to determine the direction of other processes taking place in isolated systems provided that (...)

Bioethics and the Marginalization of Mental Illness.Janet R. Nelson - 2003 - Journal of the Society of Christian Ethics 23 (2):179-197.
This paper explores why ethical issues associated with mental illness have been generally neglected in the literature and texts of the discipline of bioethics. I argue that the reasons for this are both philosophical and structural, involving the philosophical framework of principlism in bioethics, in particular the privileging of the principle of autonomy, and the institutional location and disciplinary boundaries of bioethics as a profession. Other contributing factors include developments outside of bioethics, in medicine and law and in the delivery (...)

This essay discusses the origins, biases, and effects on contemporary discussions of economics and ethics of the unexamined use of the metaphor an economy is a machine. Both neoliberal economics and many critiques of capitalist systems take this metaphor as their starting point. The belief that economies run according to universal laws of motion, however, is shown to be based on a variety of rationalist thinking that – while widely held – is inadequate for explaining lived human experience. Feminist scholarship (...)

Over the past decade, support for reexamining and reconsidering the U.S. model of ethics review for protocols involving research with humans has grown, particularly for studies involving participants from multiple locales and organizations. The HMO Research Network received an infrastructure-building contract in 2004 that enabled us to evaluate issues in multi-institutional IRB review, examine possible changes, and propose a new model. We conducted key informant interviews and held meetings with IRB personnel, administrators, and researchers, eventually resulting in networkwide agreement to (...)

    Any Given We.Scott G. Nelson - 2010 - Journal of International Political Theory 6 (1):23-46.
Democracy and the state are two political notions that have come under considerable duress in late modernity. This paper considers a prominent critic of both, Sheldon Wolin. The paper examines three elements that figure in Wolin's analyses of democracy and the modern state in a central way: community, memory, and the culture of history. A theorisation of these elements can illuminate what is at stake in the articulation of political conceptions that yield communal forms through the constitution of political space. (...)

  46. Can Medical Licensing Boards Swing the Pendulum Towards Judicious Opioid Prescribing Practices?Lewis S. Nelson & Jeanmarie Perrone - 2024 - Journal of Law, Medicine and Ethics 52 (3):690-692.
In the initial wave of the opioid crisis, uninformed prescribing practices and lax oversight were the drivers of opioid addiction and death. Although opioid prescriptions have decreased by 44.4 percent between 2011-2020,1 the number of deaths linked to prescription opioids has decreased only marginally.2 The marked fall in opioid prescribing without a concomitant reduction in opioid-related deaths suggests that an at-risk population continued to receive prescription opioids, whether directly or indirectly, from a medical professional. Currently, illicitly manufactured fentanyl (IMF) is (...)

Creation of Ethnicity in an Early Christian Document, the Epistle to Diognetus.Amanda Nelson - 2011 - Constellations (University of Alberta Student Journal) 2 (2):21-30.
Second century documents such as the Epistle to Diognetus can give us an insight into the creation of identity when Christianity was just starting to flourish. This study uses definitions of identity from the perspective of several scholars such as Jonathan Z. Smith and Denise Kimber Buell, as well as others. The aim of this work is to understand how identity was imagined in one important early Christian document.

    Divine action: Is it credible?Jams S. Nelson - 1995 - Zygon 30 (2):267-280.
The concept of God's acting in the world has been seen to be problematic in light of the claims of scientific knowledge that the regularity of a law like universe rules out divine action. There are resources in both scientific knowledge and religion that can render meaningful and credible divine action. The new physics, chaos theory, cognitive psychology, and the concept of top‐down causation are used to understand how God acts in the world. God's action is not an intervention, but (...)
