  3. Homo animalis, a Japanese Futurism.Hiroki Azuma & Yuk Hui - 2021 - Philosophy Today 65 (2):401-408.
In this dialogue, Hiroki Azuma discusses with Yuk Hui about the perception of technology in Japan after the defeat in the Second World War, from the Kyoto School to the postmodern critics, and the ambivalent conflicts between the modern and the tradition. The postmodern culture has a different signification in Japan than in the West as well as in other parts of Asia. Azuma documents the rise of the Otaku culture in Japan, and calls them “database animals,” a (...)

    A Prostitute's Lived Experiences of Stigma.Miyuki Tomura - 2009 - Journal of Phenomenological Psychology 40 (1):51-84.
This research used a semi-structured interview method and Smith and Osborn's interpretive phenomenological analysis to investigate a female prostitute's experiences of stigma associated with her work. To structure the interview schedule, Seidman's in-depth phenomenologically based interviewing method, which comprises three areas of focus, “focused life history,” “details of the experience” under investigation, and “reflection of the meaning” of the experience, was used as a general guide. Ten broad psychological themes were identified: 1) awareness of engaging in what people think is (...)

Expression of glycoconjugates during development of the vertebrate nervous system.Gerald A. Schwarting & Miyuki Yamamoto - 1988 - Bioessays 9 (1):19-23.
There is increasing evidence that carbohydrate antigens act as cell recognition molecules in the highly organized structure of the nervous system. These carbohydrate antigens may be expressed as glycolipids, glycoproteins or proteoglycans, and in some cases all three forms of these glycoconjugates, expressing identical carbohydrate epitopes, can be detected in a specific brain region. This article summarizes recent studies concerning the expression of glycoconjugates during development of the vertebrate central nervous system. These findings are discussed in association with current models (...)

Resonance within and between linguistic beings.Stephen D. Goldinger & Tamiko Azuma - 2004 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 27 (2):199-200.
Pickering & Garrod deserve appreciation for their cogent argument that dialogue merits greater scientific consideration. Current models make little contact with behaviors of dialogue, motivating the interactive alignment theory. However, the theory is not truly “mechanistic.” A full account requires both representations and processes bringing those representations into harmony. We suggest that Grossberg 's adaptive resonance theory may naturally conform to the principles of dialogue.

Intergenerational Transmission of Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences on Next Generation’s Development: A Mini-Review.Keita Ishikawa, Natsuko Azuma & Mai Ohka - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
have extremely harmful impacts on an individual’s physical, social and mental health throughout their life-span. Recently, it has been reported that maternal ACEs increase the risk of developmental delay in the offspring across generations. This mini review focuses on the direct relationship between maternal ACEs and child developmental delay, and potential mediators/moderators that associate their relationship. Six studies were identified using three search engines. The results indicated that four out of six studies reported at least one significant direct association between (...)

The ethico-aesthetics of teaching: Toward a theory of relational practice in education.Yasushi Maruyama & Miyuki Okamura - 2024 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 56 (2):145-152.
This paper discusses what constitutes good teaching, taking as its cue the ‘aesthetic’ concept treated in everyday aesthetics and ‘internal good’ accounted by McIntyre. Teaching is viewed as practice, not merely as a basic action, due to its epistemological nature as everyday work. What everyday aesthetics teaches us is that even in the practice of teaching, sensory experiences such as comfort, familiarity, discomfort, ordinariness, etc. can be viewed as aesthetic experience. This kind of aesthetic experience constitute intuition supporting ’good teaching’ (...)

This paper reports on a quiz robot experiment in which we explore similarities and differences in human participant speech, gaze, and bodily conduct in responding to a robot’s speech, gaze, and bodily conduct across two languages. Our experiment involved three-person groups of Japanese and English-speaking participants who stood facing the robot and a projection screen that displayed pictures related to the robot’s questions. The robot was programmed so that its speech was coordinated with its gaze, body position, and gestures in (...)

Holistic approach for problem improvement in health education: A human centred basis. A case study on AIDS prevention and control at a Chinese medical school. [REVIEW]Ning Wei, Bing Zhang, Tao Li, Abdul Fattah & Miyuki Yamamoto - 1998 - AI and Society 12 (4):264-286.
In order to cope with the changing health needs in the community, an holistic approach on AIDS prevention and control with particular reference to essential quality was introduced at an educational seminar at Hebei Medical University in China, 1996. We have identified three major points in the present study through learning and research process: 1. The importance of ñ€˜cultural normñ€™ for the unification of science and technology is identified for the community approach; 2. ñ€˜community careñ€™ emphasising human quality provides unity (...)

Coexistence between attention and distraction: An attempt to bridge the gap between Bernard Stiegler and Walter Benjamin.Sunji Lee - 2022 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 54 (5):512-520.
Reflecting on the question of media, this paper attempts to bridge the gap between attention and distraction in Bernard Stiegler and Walter Benjamin’s respective philosophies. Based on Stiegler’s philosophical theory, this paper will demonstrate, on the one hand, how harmful the destruction of attention, i.e. deficit hyperactivity disorder (Mattew, Citation2012), can be to intergenerational relationships which is constructed of retentions including tertiary retention, and the other hand, how Stiegler’s theory is too exclusively focused upon ‘Generation M,’ that is children with (...)
