Oral kinematics: examining the role of edibility and valence in the in-out effect.Sandra Godinho, Margarida V. Garrido, Michael Zürn & Sascha Topolinski - 2018 - Cognition and Emotion 33 (5):1094-1098.
ABSTRACTPrevious research has revealed a stable preference for words with inward consonantal-articulation patterns, over outward-words. Following the oral approach-avoidance account suggesting that the in–out effect is due to the resemblance between consonantal-articulations patterns and ingestion/expectoration, recent findings have shown that when judging inward-outward names for objects with particular oral functions, valence did not modulate the effect while the oral function did. To replicate and examine further the role of edibility and valence in shaping the in–out effect, we asked participants to (...)

A full ideology as driver for authoritarian dynamics: Comment to Populism and Civil Society.Michael Zürn - 2024 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 50 (6):850-854.
“Populism and Civil Society” is a rich book full of insights. I see three crucial overarching points the book drives home: one about the character of current populism, one about the causes, and one about the consequences. First, they define populism in a way that goes beyond the prevailing juxtaposition of the people and the elite. Instead, the definition involves elements of the ideas about a good order, including the central role of popular sovereignty, the symbolic representation and embodiment of (...)

Public sphere and global governance.Michael Zürn - 2024 - Philosophy and Social Criticism 50 (1):255-277.
This paper is about the effects of the absence and the possibility of the emergence of a normatively meaningful political public sphere. The effects of the lack of a global public sphere are far-reaching. Namely, the current crisis of global governance and the global political system can be traced back to the absence of a normatively meaningful public sphere that can mediate between global society and the authoritative institutions of global governance. At the same time, I argue that the absence (...)

  6. The Liberal Script at the Beginning of the 21st century: Conceptions, Components, and Tensions.Tanja Börzel, Johannes Gerschewski & Michael Zürn (eds.) - 2024 - Oxford: Oxford University Press.
This volume takes stock and understands better what liberal ideas and institutions actually mean in the 21st century and why they are currently so heavily contested. It introduces the concept of “liberal script” to analyze but also problematize liberal thinking as much as its different components, linkages, and the tensions they produce. The edited volume integrates theoretical and methodological perspectives from different disciplines, including political science, sociology, law, history, philosophy, postcolonial studies, and educational science. In demonstrating the theoretical and empirical (...)

Perspektiven einer kritischen Theorie der Gerechtigkeit. Berlin: Suhrkamp Verlag. pp. 300-354.

  8. Contradict them softly! Contradictions of the subject feel less true than contradictions of the object.Beatriz Gusmão, Michael K. Zürn & Sascha Topolinski - forthcoming - Cognition and Emotion.
Individuals attribute a higher truth value to repeated compared to novel information, the well-known truth effect. Also, information that contradicts what we have heard earlier is considered falser than both repeated and completely new information, known as the contradiction effect. These two effects are a challenge to the correction of misinformation because one cannot easily correct earlier misleading claims. In the present paper, we show a new and important factor that enhances the effectiveness of corrections, the syntactic placement of the (...)

New Modes of Governance in the Global System: Exploring Publicness, Delegation and Inclusiveness.Mathias Koenig-Archibugi & Michael Zürn (eds.) - 2005 - Palgrave-Macmillan.
Globalization processes are propelling a transformation of governance. As political problems become more transnational, public as well as private actors increasingly perform governance activities beyond the level of individual states. This book examines the wide variety of forms that governance can take in the global system and their consequences. An overarching analytical framework is applied to global institutions and initiatives in areas such as trade liberalization, financial market regulation, privacy protection, cybercrime, and food safety.

  11. Towards a Typology of Contestation. Four Clusters of Contestants.Michael Zürn, Nieves Fernández Rodríguez, Lena Röllicke, Maximilian Weckemann, Alexander Schmotz & Stefan Gosepath - manuscript
Liberal ideas, institutions, and orders are being challenged globally and in diverse ways. Based on cluster analysis, this paper identifies four clusters of contestants challenging the liberal script: “Fundamentalists“, „Authoritarian Populists“, „Market-Sceptic Egalitarians“, and „Identity-Focused Contestants“. These clusters group diverse actors based on their critiques of liberal principles, epistemological standpoints, intensity of their contestation, identities and emotions. The Fundamentalists pose the greatest challenge to the liberal script, rejecting most liberal principles and endorsing alternative scripts. The Authoritarian Populists instead predominantly contest (...)
