  1. The Reverse Hierarchy Theory of Visual Perceptual Learning.Merav Ahissar & Shaul Hochstein - 2004 - Trends in Cognitive Sciences 8 (10):457-464.
Perceptual learning can be defined as practice-induced improvement in the ability to perform specific perceptual tasks. We previously proposed the Reverse Hierarchy Theory as a unifying concept that links behavioral findings of visual learning with physiological and anatomical data. Essentially, it asserts that learning is a top-down guided process, which begins at high-level areas of the visual system, and when these do not suffice, progresses backwards to the input levels, which have a better signal-to-noise ratio. This simple concept has proved (...)

Are single-cell data sufficient for testing neural network models?Ehud Ahissar - 1995 - Behavioral and Brain Sciences 18 (4):626-627.
Persistent activity can be the product of mechanisms other than attractor reverberations. The single-unit data presented by Amit cannot discriminate between the different mechanisms. In fact, single-unit data do not appear to be adequate for testing neural network models.

    Between Imaginary Lines.Hagar Kotef & Merav Amir - 2011 - Theory, Culture and Society 28 (1):55-80.
Looking at one site, the Israeli checkpoints in the occupied Palestinian territory, this article seeks to understand the mechanisms by which violence can present itself as justifiable (or justified), even when it materializes within frames presumably set to annul it. We look at the checkpoints as a condensed microcosmos operating within two such frames. One is the prolonged Israeli-Palestinian ‘peace process’ (the checkpoints became a primary technology of control in the period following the beginning of the peace process), and the (...)

  6. Can life be evaluated? The jewish halachic approach vs. the quality of life approach in medical ethics: A critical view.Raphael Cohen-Almagor & Merav Shmueli - 2000 - Theoretical Medicine and Bioethics 21 (2):117-137.
In recent years there has been an increase in the number of requests formercy killings by patients and their relatives. Under certain conditions, the patient may prefer death to a life devoid of quality. In contrast to thosewho uphold this quality of life approach, those who hold the sanctity oflife approach claim that life has intrinsic value and must be preservedregardless of its quality. This essay describes these two approaches, examines their flaws, and offers a golden path between the two extremepositions. We discuss (...)

Telling the truth to patients before hip fracture surgery.Rawan Masarwa, Merav Ben Natan & Yaron Berkovich - 2024 - BMC Medical Ethics 25 (1):1-7.
Background Hip fracture repair surgery carries a certain mortality risk, yet evidence suggests that orthopedic surgeons often refrain from discussing this issue with patients prior to surgery. Aim This study aims to examine whether orthopedic surgeons raise the issue of one-year post-surgery mortality before hip fracture repair surgery and to explore factors influencing this decision. Method The study employs a cross-sectional design, administering validated digital questionnaires to 150 orthopedic surgeons. Results A minority of orthopedic surgeons reported always informing patients about (...)

Comparing expert and novice understanding of a complex system from the perspective of structures, behaviors, and functions.Cindy E. Hmelo-Silver & Merav Green Pfeffer - 2004 - Cognitive Science 28 (1):127-138.
Complex systems are pervasive in the world around us. Making sense of a complex system should require that a person construct a network of concepts and principles about some domain that represents key (often dynamic) phenomena and their interrelationships. This raises the question of how expert understanding of complex systems differs from novice understanding. In this study we examined individuals' representations of an aquatic system from the perspective of structural (elements of a system), behavioral (mechanisms), and functional aspects of a (...)

    Le bien-être à apprendre de l’apprenant au bien-être à faire apprendre de l’étudiant-professeur.Laurent Jeannin, Cindy Vicente & Merav Sellam - 2023 - Revue Phronesis 12 (2-3):271-282.
The well-being of learning and of being taught is a fundamental question that can arise for school teachers. When is this questioning good for teachers. We will analyze the memories of students from 2016 to 2021 in order to highlight the specificities of appropriation of this question of the good for future school teachers. We will compare the pre-health crisis to the research conducted during this crisis. By the methodology of the textometric analysis of memories and by the analysis of (...)
