This manuscript investigates the factors influencing the selection of responsive corporate social responsibility (CSR) programmes in the subsidiaries of Japanese manufacturing multinational enterprises (MNEs) operating in Indonesia. With a significant and growing manufacturing sector funded by foreign direct investment—of which Japanese MNEs are a major participant—Indonesia offers a novel but significant focus given its low GDP per capita, ecological challenges and being one of the first nations in South-East Asia to mandate CSR practices. Institutional and agency theories provide a multitheoretical (...) lens for this responsive CSR study enabling a rich, robust framework for addressing both the external and internal drivers of CSR. This study uses a qualitative approach with a sample of four Japanese manufacturing MNEs. The data were collected by interviewing managing directors and CSR personnel of the subsidiary organisations and investigating the CSR practices in secondary data sources from websites and CSR reports from both the headquarter and subsidiary organisations. A proximity effect based on a combination of the size and location of the subsidiary operation was found to be important in determining responsive CSR activities. Personal preferences and connections with the community were also identified as key factors. Feedback loops were identified through MNE CSR reports and websites, which could influence other MNEs and community stakeholders seeking funding. This study's main contribution to the literature is the development of a conceptual framework that details both the internal and external factors influencing the decision-making process of responsive CSR. The lexicalist vs. transformationalist controversy involving causative sentences has been argued to the extreme extent in either position, studies based on Fillmore's case grammar by Sasaki and Taylor representing the former, and those based on the theory of lexical decomposition by McCawley and G. Lakoff representing the latter. The following work presents arguments that neither of these extreme positions is correct in Japanese. What do all languages have in common, and what gives each language its individuality? Language typology, which has developed in response to these fundamental questions, is concerned with the construction of theoretical frameworks capable of delimiting the range of possible human languages and of capturing constraints on cross-linguistic variation. Language typology is a major concern of all contemporary schools of linguistics, yet a coherent image of the field is difficult to form because of the diversity of theoretical orientations and practical (...) methodologies. This collection brings together for the first time original contributions from major schools of typological research, from the Prague School to the Generative Grammar tradition. Leading scholars offer first-hand accounts of the theoretical foundations and substantive findings of their particular school of thought, clarifying basic assumptions which are often not explicitly stated in the literature. The collection as a whole provices both a survey of the place of individual typological schools in the historiography of the subject and a comprehensive account of the present state of language typology in an international context. Spontaneous actions are preceded by brain signals that may sometimes be detected hundreds of milliseconds in advance of a subject's conscious intention to act. These signals have been claimed to reflect prior unconscious decisions, raising doubts about the causal role of conscious will. Murakami et al. (2014. Nat Neurosci 17: 1574–1582) have recently argued for a different interpretation. During a task in which rats spontaneously decided when to abort waiting, the authors recorded neurons in the secondary motor cortex. The neural (...) activity and relationship to action timing was parsimoniously explained using an integration-to-bound model, similar to those widely used to account for evidence-based decisions. In this model, the brain accumulates spontaneously occurring inputs voting for or against an action, but only commits to act once a certain threshold is crossed. The model explains how spontaneous decisions can be forecast (partially predicted) by neurons that reflect either the input or output of the integrator. It therefore presents an explicit hypothesis capable of rejecting the claim that such predictive signals imply unconscious decisions. We suggest that these results can inform the current debate on free will but must be considered with caution. (shrink)

Empowering the rank and file members in choosing a party leader has become an increasing trend in parliamentary democracies. This study examines the process of adopting more inclusive methods to choose a party leader in the Liberal Democratic Party of Japan. The LDP introduced a national primary to elect a leader in 1978. However, this first attempt to open up the party leadership selection was soon replaced by traditional coalition-making politics. In this regard, the LDP is different from most of (...) the Westminster parties that followed a smooth linear process of transferring more power to the rank and file members. This article identifies a ‘swing-back’ effect between 1980 and 1990 in the democratization process of party leadership selection. Working like a pendulum, the LDP did not resume a primary until 1991. It was in 2003 that a nationwide primary became a regular way. This article argues that the discontinuity of reformist actors caused this uncommon swing-back effect. The reformist split in 1976, the sudden death of Masayoshi Ohira, and Kanemaru mediation in 1984 stalled the reforms. Although one finds a similar trend in democratizing party leadership selection outside Europe, the LDP presented an abnormal inactivity and time-lag differences. (shrink)
