In this chapter we offer a reflection on the notion of sample representativeness from an interpretivist-qualitative perspective. Specifically we are looking into the idea of learning about a phenomenon through examining extraordinary individuals characterized by that phenomenon; to describe them we use the term ‘extraordinary’ as a noun, thereby building on Howard Gardner’s notion of ‘extraordinary minds’ (Gardner, 1997). We are looking at the ‘extraordinary’ in their professional socio-historical contexts, as the phenomena we are interested in cannot be divorced from (...) the contexts in which they are embedded. In this particular book chapter we are interested in the phenomenon of creativity, and the two research projects on which we base our argument are also concerned with creativity. However, we do not see any reason why similar considerations could not be made in other areas – but we do not suggest that a simple generalizability is possible. -/- The basis of our reflection are two research projects we have done in the past: In the first one, we conducted ‘insider interviews’ (the second-named author used to be a chef in Michelin-starred restaurants) with 18 extraordinary chefs in order to gain a better understanding of how creativity manifests itself socio-culturally in the culinary domain (Cousins, O’Gorman, & Stierand, 2010; Stierand, 2015; Stierand & Dörfler, 2012b, 2016; Stierand, Dörfler, & MacBryde, 2014; Stierand & Lynch, 2008). In the second one, we interviewed 20 extraordinary scientists, including 17 Nobel Laureates in order to gain a better understanding of cognitive complexity and how cognitive complexity is manifested in the socio-cultural acceptance of creative outcomes in the scientific world (Dörfler & Eden, 2014a, 2014b, 2017). -/- We have presented our research at various conferences, and, perhaps as we were so passionate about it, we have received a great deal of interest from others, mainly PhD students and early career researchers, who were keen to undertake similar research projects. But, although we believe that the methodological journey we have taken can be an excellent path to very interesting and meaningful research, we cannot wholeheartedly recommend it to junior colleagues, knowing the difficulties they will face when trying to justify their findings and methodological choices and the uncertain profits in the form of publication of the results (see an excellent overview of the difficulties and profits in Lebuda, 2014). We made our initial methodological choices, i.e. interviewing extraordinary chefs and scientists, purely intuitively that is, we just knew that the insights we could gain from these people would potentially lead to excellent findings. However, this is not an acceptable justification in the academic world. Therefore, we started to develop a framework for conducting this type of research, but we are not quite there yet. This reflection chapter is a midway point for taking stock of the convincing arguments we have developed over time and of the problems we still need to solve. (shrink)

Purpose – The purpose of this study is to improve our understanding of bracketing, one of the most central philosophical and theoretical constructs of phenomenology, as a theory of mind. Furthermore, we wanted to showcase how this theoretical construct can be implemented as a methodological tool. -/- Design/methodology/approach – In this study we have adopted an approach similar to a qualitative metasynthesis, comparing the emergent patterns of two empirical projects, seeking synergies and contradictions and looking for additional insights from new (...) emerging patterns. -/- Findings – On a philosophical level, we have found that bracketing, as a theoretical construct, is not about the achievement of objectivity; quite to the contrary, it embraces subjectivity and puts it centre-stage. On a theoretical level, we have achieved a better understanding of Husserl’s phenomenology, as a theory of mind. On a methodological level, we have achieved a powerful way of supplementing and/or clarifying research findings, by using a theoretical construct as a methodological tool. -/- Originality/value – Our paper contributes to the phenomenology literature at a philosophical, theoretical and methodological level, by offering a better understanding and a novel implementation of one of the central theoretical constructs of phenomenology. This paper addresses Prinz's naturalistic theory of conceptual content, which he has defended in several works (Prinz, 2000; 2002; 2006). More precisely, I present in detail and critically assess his account of referential content, which he distinguishes from nominal or cognitive content. The paper argues that Prinz's theory faces four important difficulties, which might have significant consequences for his overall empiricist project.

In this article we analyze the methodological commitments of a radical embodied cognition (REC) approach to social interaction and social cognition, specifically with respect to the explanatory framework it adopts. According to many representatives of REC, such as enactivists and the proponents of dynamical and ecological psychology, sociality is to be explained by (1) focusing on the social unit rather than the individuals that comprise it and (2) establishing the regularities that hold on this level rather than modeling the sub-personal (...) mechanisms that could be said to underlie social phenomena. We point out that, despite explicit commitment, such a view implies an implicit rejection of the mechanistic explanation framework widely adopted in traditional cognitive science (TCS), which, in our view, hinders comparability between REC and these approaches. We further argue that such a position is unnecessary and that enactive mechanistic explanation of sociality is both possible and desirable. We examine three distinct objections from REC against mechanistic explanation, which we dub the decomposability, causality and extended cognition worries. In each case we show that these complaints can be alleviated by either appreciation of the full scope of the mechanistic account or adjustments on both mechanistic and REC sides of the debate. Peter Godfrey-Smith and Nicholas Shea have argued that standard versions of teleosemantics render explanations of successful behavior by appealing to true beliefs circular and, consequently, non-explanatory. As an alternative, Shea has recently suggested an original teleosemantic account (that he calls ?Infotel-semantics?), which is supposed to be immune to the problem of circularity. The paper argues that the standard version of teleosemantics has a satisfactory reply to the circularity objection and that, in any case, Infotel-semantics is not better off than standard (...) teleosemantics. Ethics education in the professions has become close to compulsory with continuing education following suit. What is the de facto as opposed to the de jure function of an ethics education program? Have they increased compliance with laws and codes of conduct? Is that the goal? What would an ethics education program look like that was not primarily concerned with compliance with relevant laws or professional codes and not merely an exercise in good public relations? I argue that, ultimately, ethics (...) education is about happiness… not happiness as we generally think of it today, but in the Aristotelian sense of “fulfillment” and the collateral good that is generated for clients and the profession. As a result of this point of view I argue that ethics is not a subject in the normal sense of the term but a meta-subject which implies that teaching ethics as a class or stand alone module in a law, policy or practice management course is usually ineffective. Another implication is that the richest source for moral reflection within a profession are case studies generated by students in clinical assignments, despite the inherent risks associated with making these cases prominent. This text discusses the impact of immersive technologies on our identity and relationship to digital and analogue modalities in a non-normative way. It references the work of Joseph Beuys, specifically his iconic performance of being confined with a coyote in a gallery space for three days, to construct connections between borders, edges, limits and identity, face presentation, representation and projection towards ourselves and our audiences. We reference the works of Marcel Duchamp and George Orwell and compare the immersive devices of (...) the nineteenth century to current technology. Various works of art and literature are used to illustrate the impact of technology on society and the individual’s relationship to the collective imagination. The text raises questions about the limits or nonlimits of exposure of identity through machinic and technological devices or processes in the context of privacy of expression in a contemporary networked world. Health authorities increasingly request that general practitioners use information and communication technologies such as electronic patient records for accountability purposes. This article deals with the use of EPRs among general practitioners in Britain. It examines two ways in which GPs use the EPR for accountability purposes. One way is to generate audit reports on the basis of the information that has been entered into the record. The other is to let the computer intervene in the clinical process through prompts. The (...) article argues that GPs' ambivalence toward using the EPR makes them active in finding ways that turn the EPR into a meaningful tool for them, that is, a tool that helps them provide what they see as good care. The article's main contribution is to show how accountability and autonomy are coproduced; less professional autonomy does not follow from more requests to document one's work. Instead, new forms of autonomy are produced in the sociotechnical network that is made up by health policy and local engagements with patients and technology. (shrink)

"We are omniscient but confused," says Leibniz. He also says that we live in the best of all possible worlds, yet do not causally interact. So what are we? Leibniz is known for many things, including the ideality of space and time, calculus, plans for a universal language, theodicy, and ecumenism. But he is not known for his ideas on the self and personal identity. This book shows that Leibniz offers an original, internally coherent theory of personal identity, a theory (...) that stands on its own even next to Locke's contemporaneous and more famous version. This book will appeal not only to students of Leibniz's thought but also to philosophers and psychologists interested in methodological problems in understanding or formulating theories of self and personal identity. En ellas se aborda la teoría de la creación poética de Mallarmé en términos de una epoché vibratoria del lenguaje, la cual suspende la función de significación de las palabras, para revelarlas en su «parpadeo», es decir, en una movilidad del sentido haciéndose que las lleva a vibrar entre la apariencia de la nada y el simulacro de ser, (...) vibración que no constituye una presencia, sino que es a su vez la resonancia o el eco del instante cartesiano en tanto «desfase diferencial». No obstante, dicha resonancia podría llevar al poeta a obviar el hiato insalvable entre las lenguas y el lenguaje, es decir, a pensar que podría tocar a una suerte de lenguaje o «poema» absolutos. La consecuencia de dicha posición es doble: o se pretende escribir dicho «poema» absoluto, con lo cual el poeta se coloca en el lugar de un pensamiento que se piensa a sí mismo; o se recusa siquiera la posibilidad de concebir tal trascendencia absoluta, con lo cual la creación poética asume su condición de ser un mero «simulacro» o un «lance de dados». La publication des Inédits laisse émerger dans les notes et réflexions d’Emmanuel Levinas un véritable « corpus » de notations autour de la métaphore. L’article cherche à ressaisir le mouvement de pensée qui traverse cette attention portée à un thème moins explicitement présent dans l’œuvre publiée. Il montre que Levinas se dégage des perspectives rhétoriques classiques et se démarque de Husserl, Heidegger et Merleau-Ponty, en décelant dans le « mouvement d’amplification au-delà » porté par la métaphore, l’essence même du langage. (...) Il tente ensuite de retracer le lien qui lie « l’au-delà » (dont les métaphores du langage expriment la transcendance de pur jeu) et la « hauteur » (dont le visage est Dire dans la trace de l’absolument Autre). Il s’efforce enfin d’expliciter ce que Levinas – qui désigne Dieu tel l’Irrévélé de la responsabilité éthique – veut signifier par cette notation surprenante : « sans métaphore on ne peut pas entendre la voix de Dieu »! L’article se conclut par quelques remarques sur la rupture du mouvement de la métaphore vers l’insaisissable de la passivité du créé et sur l’usage de l’emphase hyperbolique dans Autrement qu’être ou au-delà de l’essence. En analysant les modèles bibliques de l’obéissance mobilisés par Spinoza dans son Tractatus, cet article tente de montrer les limites d’une représentation statique de l’autorité démocratique fondée sur le rapport intellectuel à un lieu vide de la puissance publique. La thèse défendue est qu’une telle représentation manque le rôle de la puissance commune de l’imagination qui permet de modifier les comportements privés suivant les modes de l’autorité collective que sont la justice et la charité. Le rôle du philosophe politique consiste (...) précisément à dissocier dans l’imaginaire de l’obéissance à l’autorité souveraine le pouvoir de modification des comportements privés du seul désir de soumission à un grand sujet. Cet ouvrage se base sur un travail exégétique fouillé de l'idéalisme religieux postkantien. Son objectif est de parvenir à montrer l'utilité d'un tel exercice pour notre intelligence contemporaine des phénomènes religieux. La thèse défendue est que l'idéalisme postkantien est la première tentative systématique de théorie non dogmatique de la religion et que s'il parvient à ce tour de force après Kant, c'est parce qu'au lieu d'en rester à une approche minimaliste des contenus de croyance en rapport aux limites de la (...) raison, tant théorique que pratique, il déplace son angle d'approche vers le sujet croyant. Pour y arriver, il crée une matrice épistémologique qui lui permet de comprendre comment l'expérience du sujet croyant, la foi, agit sur sa perception de soi, des autres et du monde, au point d'introduire en lui une forme de variation affective, de trouble pulsionnel, qui engage des choix comportementaux. Si Fichte ouvre sur cette base une voie vers une thérapeutique du soi et une théorie critique de la religion, Schelling, pour sa part, est plus sensible à une économique holistique du développement de la vie dont un auteur comme Agamben permet de mieux saisir aujourd'hui tous les enjeux. Dans les deux cas, ce tournant épistémologique ouvre l'espace dans lequel les sciences humaines des religions pourront élaborer leurs discours au XXe siècle. Mais en reconsidérant l'origine de ce mouvement d'émancipation épistémologique à l'égard des croyances religieuses, force est aussi de reconnaître qu'un souci qui guidait les idéalistes en se concentrant sur le sujet croyant était de parvenir à maintenir le lien entre ces ordres de croyance et la capacité politique du vivre ensemble. C'est ce lien qui nous semble devoir être réactivé aujourd'hui dans nos tentatives de penser les phénomènes religieux sans établir de cassure entre une vision herméneutique et une vision politique. Antes que económicos, éticos, o estrictamente sanitarios, los desafíos de la actual coyuntura son, sobre todo, políticos. Los sistemas de salud puestos en tensión, la coordinación entre los múltiples niveles de la gobernanza sanitaria, los planes de urgencia y de prevención que fueron o han debido ser puestos en marcha son todos constructos políticos, el fruto de mecanismos colectivos de decisión, el resultado de un conjunto de elecciones políticas. No basta, sin embargo, con detenernos a auditar un sistema tras un (...) choque planetario, más real que todos los simulacros que hubiéramos podido siquiera imaginar. También nuestra inteligencia colectiva ha sido aporreada. La urgencia y el pánico ante la subestimación de los riesgos y la falta de preparación para ellos han conducido a medidas drásticas, inéditas, que nos han hecho recordar los tiempos más sombríos del siglo XX. Algo ha cambiado radicalmente y todavía no estamos en condiciones de nombrarlo; lo presentimos, evidentemente, lo sabemos en parte en relación con la puesta en cuestión de las certezas y con la obligación de adoptar otras costumbres, otros modos de relacionarnos, otros hábitos de trabajo, de vida y aun de amar a nuestros seres queridos.
