En 1819, Maine de Biran rédige une Exposition du système de Leibniz. Ce texte accorde une place centrale à la virtualité en l'associant à trois éléments-clés du système leibnizien : la monade miroir représentant « virtuellement » l'univers ; la conception dynamique de la substance constituée par une tendance virtuelle ; l'innéité des idées qui résulterait, aux yeux de Biran, d'une application de la dynamique et plus précisément du concept de la « force considérée comme virtuelle ». Ces trois références (...) à la virtualité comportent donc un aspect problématique que l'article tente d'éclairer en s'appuyant sur le rôle que Maine de Biran lui-même fait jouer à la virtualité dans son propre itinéraire philosophique. En particulier, le Mémoire sur la décomposition de la pensée fait jouer un rôle central à la « force virtuelle » (virtual force) en tant que force préexistant au moi, et permettant d'échapper au substantialisme. La force virtuelle apparaît comme un concept malléable permettant de concilier deux concepts initialement antinomiques pour Biran, celui de substance et celui d'activité. Or c'est précisément aussi ce que fait la dynamique leibnizienne à ses yeux. La tentation est dès lors très forte d'attribuer ce concept-clé à Leibniz lui-même, d'autant plus que Jean Bernoulli, Emilie du Chatelet, D'Alembert, avaient déjà introduit la virtualité dans le lexique de la dynamique leibnizienne pour qualifier la force morte (dead force). Biran est ainsi conduit à reconstituer l'itinéraire intellectuel de Leibniz et à considérer que ce dernier a puisé son concept de force dans l'expérience de l'aperception (apperception), au sens biranien du terme. The goal of this essay is to assess the Selected-Effects Etiological Theory of biological function, according to which a trait has a function F if and only if it has been selected for F. First, I argue that this approach should be understood as describing the paradigm case of functions, rather than as establishing necessary and sufficient conditions for function possession. I contend that, interpreted in this way, the selected-effects approach can explain two central properties of functions and can satisfactorily (...) address some recent counterexamples. This reading, however, shows that there is only a partial overlap between biological functions and selected effects, so the former cannot be reduced to the latter. Finally, I maintain that this result is still compatible with a naturalistic theory of function that appeals to some evolutionary process. (shrink)

The goal of this essay is to put forward an original theory of artifact function, which takes on board the results of the debate on the notion of biological function and also accommodates the distinctive aspects of artifacts. More precisely, the paper develops and defends the Dual-Aspect Theory, which is a monist account according to which an artifact’s function depends on intentional and reproductive aspects. If a potential person would have a good life if he were to come into existence, can we coherently regard his coming into existence as better for him than his never coming into existence? And can we regard the situation in which he never comes into existence as worse for him? In this paper, we argue that both questions should be answered affirmatively. Due to their financial incentive, clinicians who earn income from a firm that markets medical devices, pharmaceuticals, tests, etc. might inappropriately prescribe their products or services. The Cleveland Clinic’s conflict of interest (CI) policy creates rules governing clinicians who accept compensation from outside firms that market products they prescribe or use in their practice (hereafter, covered financial relationships). The CI policy is implemented by the Innovation Management and Conflict of Interest Program (IM&COI) (hereafter the Committee).

Paul Thompson, John Beatty, and Elisabeth Lloyd argue that attempts to resolve certain conceptual issues within evolutionary biology have failed because of a general adherence to the received view of scientific theories. They maintain that such issues can be clarified and resolved when one adopts a semantic approach to theories. In this paper, I argue that such conceptual issues are just as problematic on a semantic approach. Such issues arise from the complexity involved in providing formal accounts of theoretical laws (...) and scientific explanations. That complexity is due to empirical and pragmatic considerations, not one's adherence to a particular formal approach to theories. This analysis raises a broader question. How can any formal account properly represent the complex nature of empirical phenomena? (shrink)

What defence does the Narrative Practice Hypothesis have against the charge that it is a covert form of externalist theory theory ? I discuss and reject Dan Hutto's own strategies and argue that the NPH remains vulnerable to a threat of collapse into externalist TT as long as narrative folk-psychological explanation is differentiated from simple belief-desire explanation merely by a degree of complexity, subtlety and/or context-sensitivity. It is entirely plausible, however, that there is a more principled distinction between these two (...) types of explanation of human behaviour. English summary: Bonaventurian thought is indeed a monadology. This book makes use of Foucauldian archaeology in order to present the monadological discourse. Further, it provides a solution to the archaeological questions that relate to subject, object, and speech which reappear systematically in Bonaventure's texts. Further, as Bonaventure did not write a treaty of monadology, and as far as his monadology is only the result of his thought and practice, this book must be understood, instead, as a rewriting of his monadology. Son principe n'est pas l'unite indivisible de la monade, comme dans la monadologie leibnizienne, mais la ressemblance avec une tri-unite, la Trinite creatrice que tous les etres expriment a leur maniere. This, I am convinced, is not the approach best suited to bring out the deepest insights and systematic teachings of another philosopher. On the contrary, it would seem that one can make sense out of another man's thought only by coming to (...) know how that person sees the problem, and what he regards as an adequate solution to it. Le présent volume cherche à mettre en lumière le travail philosophique d'Adorno, dont la rigueur, la force et l'originalité s'inscrivent dans un rapport approfondi et critique à l'histoire de la philosophie. La situation d'Adorno sur la scène philosophique permet d'interroger l'actualité de sa pensée ainsi que sa réserve d'avenir. Adorno lie ce qu'il appelle la chute de la métaphysique et de la culture à une loi tragique, celle devant laquelle il place la philosophie : 'penser et agir en sorte qu'Auschwitz (...) ne se répète pas, que rien de semblable n'arrive'. Il va alors articuler, dans son travail philosophique, la chute et le sauvetage de la métaphysique à un renouvellement de la dialectique. La critique adornienne de la métaphysique passe, en effet, par la remise en cause de la dialectique spéculative hégélienne qui se déploie à travers une logique de l'identité et de la totalité. Ce sont notamment des expériences métaphysiques et spirituelles qui vont contraindre la dialectique à renoncer à la construction d'un savoir absolu, et obliger les concepts philosophiques à penser un réel qui lui résiste. Although I reject neuronormativity -- an idea central to the Brain Disease Model of Addiction -- Henden and Gjelsvik argue that the disease definition might refer to normativity in nonneural domains. They profess that a cognitive dysfunction, or a mismatch of evolutionary intentions, could also qualify as norm violations, thus legitimizing the disease label. The need for dividing lines is questioned as well. I rebut these criticisms in turn, but I must admit they are thought provoking.

Aux idéologies de lutte et de transformation sociales ont succédé sur l'avant-scène de la philosophie politique occidentale les pensées positives du droit et de la communication, axées sur les problèmes de régulation et d'intégration sociales. Ce phénomène, qui s'accompagne d'une critique radicale des philosophies modernes du pouvoir et de l'État, est pourtant marqué aussi par un embarras devant la persistance des questions collectives liées à la formation de véritables complexes répressifs postmodernes, tel celui de l'autolégitimation médiatique des grandes instances de (...) régulation sociale (l'État et l'économie). Il semble même que l'occultation de ces questions en lien à la violence sociale et à l'aliénation manifeste plutôt un effacement du thème politique dans la pensée d'aujourd'hui au profit d'une pragmatique générale articulée à une phénoménologie du monde vécu. L'éviction des thèses marxiennes est symptomatique à cet égard. Après avoir pris la mesure de ces impasses, l'auteur tente de renouer avec une pensée de l'action sociale capable de prendre en compte le défi politique que représente l'exercice collectif de la responsabilité, jusqu'en son enracinement dans la genèse singulière de l'engagement personnel pour habiter et préserver un monde commun. Les réflexions présentées dans cet article portent sur la nature du rituel et de la symbolique politique dans nos sociétés. On se propose de confronter différentes approches de ces phénomènes : d'un côté un point de vue qui met en évidence les déterminants sociologiques des rituels politiques. Cette approche prend appui sur une conception où la représentation politique apparaît comme une forme aliénante et mystifiante. On ne s’étonnera pas que les flux culturels et leur impact local aient retenu la curiosité des anthropologues. Ils n’étudient pas seulement la nature de ces flux, mais la manière dont les sociétés s’adaptent ou résistent à cette situation, (...) allant de l’appropriation au rejet. This paper explores the biographical and cultural sources that inspired the decision of Janusz Korczak to make his life’s vocation the education of young children from dysfunctional families. This decision emerged out of the radical version of humanism he embraced. His identification of children as the population his humanist ethos must serve, distinguishes it from other versions of humanism. The paper explores the role his sense of self and his identification with Poles, Jews, and humanity play in the composition of (...) this humanism. It identifies the hybridity of his cultural identifications as its heart. It proposes that the tensions between these identifications in general, and his non-Jewish Jewish identification that situated him as being ‘a part of’ and ‘apart from’ Polish society in particular, induced Korczak to create a universal religion of children in which religious, ethnic, or physical distinctions do not generate prejudice, intolerance, and violence. This article explores the understanding of the Church as a creative minority, particularly in connection with the Matthean beatitude of peacemaking. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger’s description of the Church as a creative minority provides the starting point. This paper investigates the communal, obedient practice of diaspora peacemaking from multiple and overlapping theological perspectives, including Biblical narratives of diaspora and of Babel, a comparison of political exile and critical exile, and diaspora peacemaking as a threefold ministry of the Church (priest, prophet, king).
