    Open questions related to the problem of Birkhoff and Maltsev.M. E. Adams, K. V. Adaricheva, W. Dziobiak & A. V. Kravchenko - 2004 - Studia Logica 78 (1):357-378.
The Birkhoff-Maltsev problem asks for a characterization of those lattices each of which is isomorphic to the lattice L(K) of all subquasivarieties for some quasivariety K of algebraic systems. The current status of this problem, which is still open, is discussed. Various unsolved questions that are related to the Birkhoff-Maltsev problem are also considered, including ones that stem from the theory of propositional logics.

  11. The relational blockworld interpretation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics.W. M. Stuckey, Michael Silberstein & Michael Cifone - unknown
We introduce a new interpretation of non-relativistic quantum mechanics (QM) called Relational Blockworld (RBW). We motivate the interpretation by outlining two results due to Kaiser, Bohr, Ulfeck, Mottelson, and Anandan, independently. First, the canonical commutation relations for position and momentum can be obtained from boost and translation operators, respectively, in a spacetime where the relativity of simultaneity holds. Second, the QM density operator can be obtained from the spacetime symmetry group of the experimental configuration exclusively. We show how QM, obtained from (...)

    Towards precision medicine; a new biomedical cosmology.M. W. Vegter - 2018 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 21 (4):443-456.
Precision Medicine has become a common label for data-intensive and patient-driven biomedical research. Its intended future is reflected in endeavours such as the Precision Medicine Initiative in the USA. This article addresses the question whether it is possible to discern a new ‘medical cosmology’ in Precision Medicine, a concept that was developed by Nicholas Jewson to describe comprehensive transformations involving various dimensions of biomedical knowledge and practice, such as vocabularies, the roles of patients and physicians and the conceptualisation of disease. (...)

    HIV, confidentiality and 'a delicate balance': a reply to Leone Ridsdale.M. W. Adler - 1991 - Journal of Medical Ethics 17 (4):196-198.
The passing on of information to GPs by genito-urinary doctors is to be encouraged but is not always possible and ultimately the patient's wishes and confidentiality must be respected if sexually transmitted diseases and HIV infection are to be controlled. Infected health-care workers should seek counselling and medical support and clear guidelines from professional organisations which are in existence. However, they will only do so if strict confidentiality is maintained and assurance about future employment can be given.

    Operation Iraqi Freedom: a prudent action by a responsible great power?M. W. Aslam - 2010 - Journal of Global Ethics 6 (3):305-321.
This article conducts a normative evaluation of Operation Iraqi Freedom undertaken in 2003 by employing principles of prudence to enquire whether the use of force could be described as an action by a responsible great power. Along with relating the principles of prudence to the concept of great power responsibility, it highlights two pillars of prudent decision-making: circumspection and awareness of one's limits. This normative framework is then utilised to evaluate the invasion of Iraq from the perspective of these specific (...)

The Differential Influence of Identification on Ethical Judgment: The Role of Brand Love.M. Deniz Dalman, Mari W. Buche & Junhong Min - 2019 - Journal of Business Ethics 158 (3):875-891.
As negative information about companies becomes widely available and spreads rapidly through digital communications, understanding consumer reactions to these events and how human perceptions are shaped becomes increasingly important. In this paper, we investigate how consumers’ identification with brands and their love for them affect their support for the brand during extremely unethical situations. The results indicate that brand identification both decreases and increases consumers’ ethical judgment following extremely unethical events. Moreover, we find that consumers who are in a love (...)

    Lamarque and Olsen on literature and truth.M. W. Rowe - 1997 - Philosophical Quarterly 47 (188):322-341.
In Fiction, Truth and Literature, Lamarque and Olsen argue that if a critic claims or attempts to prove that the outlook of a work of literature is true or false, he is not engaging in literary or aesthetic appreciation. This paper argues against this position by adducing cases where literary critics discuss the truth or falsity of a work’s view, when their opinions are obviously relevant to the work’s aesthetic assessment. The paper considers in detail the way factual errors damage (...)

Ordinary Language and Life-World Philosophies: Toward the Next Generation in Philosophy and Psychiatry.K. W. M. Fulford, Giovanni Stanghellini & John Z. Sadler - 2022 - Philosophy, Psychiatry, and Psychology 29 (1):1-4.
Philosophers have hitherto only interpreted the world in various ways; the point is to change it.Karl marx’s distinction between interpreting the world and changing it points by extension to the state of contemporary philosophy and psychiatry. The 1990s resurgence of interdisciplinary work in this area was driven equally by phenomenological scholarship and by initiatives in analytic philosophy. The former reflected the focus in phenomenology on ‘what it is like’ to experience a given mental symptom with the aim of reconstructing the (...)

    A classification of intersection type systems.M. W. Bunder - 2002 - Journal of Symbolic Logic 67 (1):353-368.
The first system of intersection types, Coppo and Dezani [3], extended simple types to include intersections and added intersection introduction and elimination rules (( $\wedge$ I) and ( $\wedge$ E)) to the type assignment system. The major advantage of these new types was that they were invariant under β-equality, later work by Barendregt, Coppo and Dezani [1], extended this to include an (η) rule which gave types invariant under βη-reduction. Urzyczyn proved in [6] that for both these systems it is (...)
