Being Indigenous and operating in an institution such as a university places us in a complex position. The premise of decolonizing history, literature, curriculum, and thought in general creates a tenuous space for Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples to confront a shared colonial condition. What does decolonization mean for Indigenous peoples? Is decolonization an implied promise to squash the tropes of coloniality? Or is it a way for non-Indigenous people to create another paradigm or site for their own resistance or transgression (...) of thinking? What are the roles of Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in this space of educational potential, this curriculum called decolonization? This article presents a multi-vocal reflection on these and related questions. (shrink)

The relation of normic support offers a novel solution to the proof paradox: a paradox in evidence law arising from legal cases involving merely statistical evidence (Smith 2018). Central to the normic support solution has been the thesis that merely statistical evidence cannot confer normic support. However, it has been observed that there are exceptions to this: there exist cases where merely statistical evidence can give rise to normic support (Blome-Tillmann 2020). If correct, this fact seems to undermine the normic (...) support solution to the proof paradox. This paper explores a resolution: normic support can resolve the proof paradox even though merely statistical evidence sometimes gives rise to normic support. The key to understanding this resolution lies with a source of evidential support that arises out of bodies of evidence that involve *character evidence* (Colyvan, et al. 2001). It turns out that character evidence can provide normic support when it is grounded in our knowledge of a certain kind of disposition individuals can have: *goal-directed dispositions*. The upshot is the recovery of the normic support solution to the puzzle of whether statistical evidence can meet legal standards of proof. (shrink)

I provide a new way of thinking of questions using an expanded space of FDE worlds. This allows both for non-exclusive and non-exhaustive answers to questions concerning one’s gender identity. Further, and most crucially for the purposes of this paper, it allows for a new, more general definition of question-inclusion that makes it possible to identify a new form of hermeneutical injustice. This form of injustice, I argue, affects trans people by keeping them in a prolonged state of gender questioning (...) and confusion in which they only grasp the part of the question Am I a member of gender G? that corresponds to the question Do I want to be a member of gender G?. Knowledge implies the presence of a positive relation between a person and a fact. Factual ignorance, on the other hand, implies the absence of some positive relation between a person and a fact. The two most influential views of ignorance hold that what is lacking in cases of factual ignorance is knowledge or true belief, but these accounts fail to explain a number of basic facts about ignorance. In their place, we propose a novel and systematic defense of the view (...) that factual ignorance is the absence of awareness, an account that both comes apart from the dominant views and overcomes their deficiencies. Given the important role that ignorance plays in moral and legal theory and our understanding of various epistemic injustices, a precise and theoretically unproblematic account of the nature of ignorance is important not only for normative epistemology, but also for law, ethics, and applied epistemology. Developments in truthmaker semantics for the most part stay clear of the metaphysical issue of what sort of entities serve as the truthmakers and falsitymakers for sentences. It is assumed that perhaps facts or states of affairs (Fine 2017a ; Jago 2020 ), with these taken sometimes as concrete particulars (Hawke 2018 ) could serve for the job, but nonetheless that some such entities would do. In this paper I take a closer look at the issue of what entities could (...) or could not play the role of truthmakers and falsitymakers in standard truthmaker semantics (Fine 2016, 2017a, b ; Fine and Jago 2019 ), based on desiderata imposed by metaphysical and semantic considerations. This paper discusses how Thomas Aquinas and some Neo-Thomists scholars (Juan José Urráburu, Joseph Hontheim, Édouard Hugon, and Joseph Gredt) analysed the metaphysical possibility of miracles. My main goal is to unpack the metaphysical toolbox that Aquinas uses to solve the basic question about the possibility of miracles and to compare how his late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century followers solved the issue themselves. The key feature to differentiate the two approaches will reside in their use of different notions to account (...) for the possibility of miracles, namely obediential potency for Aquinas and the laws of nature for the Neo-Thomists. To show why neo-Thomist scholars source to this notion, I also briefly discuss how the notion of the laws of nature emerged in the seventeenth century. (shrink)

Recent years have witnessed an increasing growth in mutual funds that invest according to social criteria. As a consequence, the financial performance of these portfolios has attracted the interest of academics and practitioners. This paper investigates the performance of a sample of socially responsible mutual funds from seven European countries investing globally and/or in the European market. Using unconditional and conditional models, we assess the performance of these funds in comparison to conventional and socially responsible benchmark portfolios. The results show (...) that European socially responsible funds present in general neutral performance in relation to both conventional and socially responsible benchmarks. However, performance estimates seem to be slightly higher when funds are evaluated in relation to socially responsible indices. Our results also show that socially responsible funds are more exposed to conventional than to socially responsible indices. Furthermore, conventional benchmarks are better able to explain fund returns than socially responsible benchmarks. These findings are robust to both unconditional and conditional models of performance. We also observe that conditional models lead to a slight improvement of performance estimates and to the explanatory power of the models, both when conventional and socially responsible benchmarks are considered. This is consistent with most previous empirical findings on conditional performance evaluation. Our results show that investors who wish to hold European funds can add social screens to their investment choices without compromising financial performance. (shrink)

Although it is now commonplace to take emotions to be the sort of phenomena for which there are reasons, the question of how to cash out the reason-responsiveness of emotions remains to a large extent unanswered. I highlight two main ways of thinking about reason-responsiveness, one that takes agential capacities to engage in norm-guided deliberation to underlie reason-responsiveness, and another which instead takes there to be a basic reason-relation between facts and attitudes. I argue that the latter approach should be (...) preferred. Not only does a reasons-basic approach promise to fare better in accounting for cases that its opponent struggles to accommodate, but it promises also to uncover a sui generis relation between emotions and their reasons which is at best obscured and at worst denied by its opponent. The claim-right model of rights contends that Hohfeldian ‘claim-rights’ defined in terms of a constitutive correlativity with directed duties mark a distinctive phenomenon encompassing paradigmatic moral rights. Recent criticisms suggest this traditional model faces a dilemma: any plausible specification (i) is extensionally or explanatorily inadequate or (ii) cannot serve a distinct normative purpose intended by those invoking rights. This work defends the claim-right model against this line of critique. It demonstrates that proper understandings of the extensional/explanatory adequacy criteria and the (...) intended taxonomic role claim-rights are meant to fulfil dissolve the apparent dilemma and support the model. O principal objetivo deste artigo é acompanhar o diálogo dos filósofos György Lukács e Carlos Nelson Coutinho acerca do legado literário de Franz Kafka. O núcleo de nossos esforços consiste na análise da tentativa de superação da abordagem lukacsiana por parte de Coutinho. Na realização dessa tarefa, conferimos atenção às dicas oferecidas pelo mestre húngaro ao discípulo baiano quanto aos limites de sua própria leitura de Kafka.

Responsibility gaps arise when there is a mismatch between the amount of responsibility that can be attributed to any person or collection of persons on leading accounts of moral responsibility and the amount that robust intuitions suggest should be allocated to someone in a case. Claimed responsibility gaps arise in numerous philosophical debates, including those concerning government, corporate, and other forms of group agency and new technologies and those concerning theoretical issues in the philosophy of responsibility. This work is an (...) opinionated introduction to and overview of recent work on responsibility gaps. It outlines and evaluates paradigmatic responsibility gap cases and ways of understanding the phenomenon as well as the existence conditions and moral status of and possible responses to responsibility gaps. Recent scholarship has focused on the notion of ‘rationality’ and the consequences of different conceptions to the characterization of the human-animal divide. In this article, I attempt to further muddle the waters by considering examples of stricter requirements being imposed on what counts to be rational. I argue that whereas many medieval authors were willing to identify similarities in the way humans and non-human animals behave and process information, they also tended to emphasize the differences in those processes: human processes (...) are inherently rational (or rational-oriented), while those of other animals may resemble rational processes but are not rational. I further claim that this evidence should lead scholars to be less generous in their attribution of rationality to non-human animals to avoid trivializing that notion. (shrink)

In the 1970s, the discovery of the problem of the hole in the ozone layer represented a crucial milestone in the history of science and the environment. Scientists such as Mario Molina and F. Sherry Rowland revealed that chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs), previously thought to be harmless, could destroy the ozone layer, leading to global awareness of environmental protection. However, they faced resistance from industry and misinformation. Confirmation of the problem came with Jonathan Shanklin’s work in Antarctica. The effects of ozone depletion, (...) such as increased skin cancer, were documented, and humanity reacted with the Montreal Protocol, phasing out harmful substances. Furthermore, the link between the historical success of science-based environmental actions and the modern challenges posed by misinformation should be emphasized, especially considering the rise of digital platforms as both tools and threats to public understanding. Today, tackling disinformation in global environmental problems represents a substantial challenge, requiring science education, raising awareness on social media, valuing traditional sources, training in source verification, recognizing science as a reliable source, and tackling environmental challenges based on science. This article proposes actionable solutions such as integrating critical media literacy into education, establishing international regulations to curb disinformation, and leveraging collaborative platforms to promote accurate scientific communication. It argues that strengthening international cooperation, modeled on the Montreal Protocol, is crucial to countering misinformation and fostering effective global environmental policies. The history of the Montreal Protocol highlights the importance of science, international cooperation, and determined action in protecting the environment and human health. (shrink)

In this article, I begin by arguing that justification of religious beliefs can involve at least two types of defeaters, namely partial evidence and peer disagreements. Belief in the existence (or nonexistence) of God, for example, is based on partial evidence. The body of evidence for this question is huge. No one is apt to consider all information and all arguments about the topic. In topics like this we have only partial evidence. Besides, there is persistent disagreement on the question (...) of God’s existence. Theists and atheists have never come to an ultimate answer. The disagreement with epistemic peers is also a sort of defeater for our religious beliefs. Thus, in the face of this scenario of dispute and defeaters, I argue for an attitude of intellectual humility. This intellectual virtue consists in owning or accepting our intellectual limitations. In this case, independently of having a belief in favor of or against God’s existence, both parties in the dispute – theists and atheists – should recognize their intellectual limitations and reduce confidence in their own beliefs. A escola é um lugar onde as crianças compartilham o espaço-tempo com seus pares, outros sujeitos que compõem seu cotidiano e, por vezes, pesquisadoras que vão a campo com suas inquietações. Para a produção deste artigo, foi utilizado como material-base o relatório de campo desenvolvido durante uma oficina realizada com crianças do 1º ano do ensino fundamental, matriculadas em uma escola municipal localizada na Zona Norte da cidade do Rio de Janeiro. A partir das falas, não falas e outras formas (...) de expressão protagonizadas por estudantes, professora e pesquisadoras, buscamos entender o lugar da palavra na elaboração de narrativas por e sobre as crianças no contexto escolar. Além dos/as autores/as do campo dos estudos da infância, apoiamo-nos em textos literários e poéticos, por fornecerem elementos que nos permitem situarmo-nos no mundo a partir de perspectivas diversas. Como exercício de reflexão sobre os movimentos e efeitos da palavra, traçamos três linhas de análise: a palavra que anseia brecha e escuta; as palavras impostas, mal endereçadas, limitantes; e, por último, as narrativas inventadas que viram de ponta-cabeça. Além de provocar educadores/as a olharem para suas práticas pedagógicas e mediações, desafiamo-nos a pensar se há espaço na escola para a expressão livre e criadora, formadora de leituras de si e da vida. Los indicadores de producción científica son elementos importantes para comprender la dinámica del conocimiento. Desde esta perspectiva, se pretende mapear autores de referencia en Ciencias de la Información a partir de publicaciones en los anales del GT1 del Encontro Nacional de Pesquisa em Ciência da Informação (ENANCIB). Se buscó identificar los acoplamientos bibliográficos de estos autores, presenta grupos de autores/referencias del corpus analizado y la co-ocurrencia de palabras clave. El corpus de la investigación se constituyó mediante la extracción de datos (...) de resúmenes ampliados y comunicaciones completas publicadas entre 2018 y 2023. Se extrajeron los siguientes elementos: tipo de investigación, nombre del primer autor, título, palabras clave, resumen y las referencias. Se extrajeron los siguientes elementos: tipo de investigación, nombre del primer autor, título, palabras clave, resumen y referencias. Se analizaron 109 documentos y se extrajeron 2369 referencias. Harold Borko y Tefko Saracevic y sus respectivas investigaciones “Information Science: What is it?” (1968) y “Ciência da Informação: origem, evolução e relações” (1996) presentaron mayor representación, referenciada al 10,09% de la producción analizada. Rafael Capurro, con ““Epistemologia e Ciência da Informação” (2003), y Tefko Saracevic, también con “Ciência da Informação: origem, evolução e relações” (1996), fueron los autores referenciados en el 9,17% del universo de investigación. El análisis de la producción también resultó en dos conglomerados, uno con 45 publicaciones y el otro con 22 publicaciones. La palabra clave “Ciencias de la Información” fue el término de mayor ocurrencia, totalizando el 22,02% del corpus de documentos, seguida por los términos “Epistemología”, con el 10,09% e “Interdisciplinariedad”, con el 7,34% del total. Las obras más referenciadas, tanto identificadas de forma singular como mediante acoplamiento bibliográfico, se alinean con el alcance del GT1 de ENANCIB. (shrink)

In this paper we claim that pragmatist philosophical practice is incompatible with scientistic philosophy. The kind of pragmatism used for making this case follows the spirit and method of philosophical pragmatists such as William James, John Dewey, Richard Rorty, and a related pragmatic tradition, Confucian Philosophy. Pragmatism starts from immediate experience, and refuses to cleave off the reality and salience of what is found in such experience in the process of thinking. Pragmatism also concerns itself with social problems, broadly conceived. (...) In contrast to this focus on immediate experience, the influence of science in much philosophizing involves a kind of scientism through which the relevance, value, and even reality of experience is brought into question. It also concerns itself with a narrowly defined set of so-called philosophical problems. In this regard, pragmatist philosophical practice is fundamentally opposed to scientistic philosophical practice. We will start by modelling the kind of philosophical practice that stems from pragmatism, and the role of immediate experience in it. Subsequently, we will introduce two modes of philosophizing that diminish if not negate the role of experience. One is bald naturalist philosophizing, and the other is a priori scientific philosophizing. In the last section, we will show how main commitments of both of these traditions are incompatible with a pragmatist philosophy that remains committed to the original impulse of pragmatism. This article discusses the concept of ‘insubmission’. This concept is the cornerstone of Amílcar Cabral’s critical theory. Introduced in his early agronomic writings, it refers to the human species’ refusal to submit to the nature of which we are always a part. The context is the anticolonial critique of traditional European humanism. Insubmission is Cabral’s response to the dehumanizing effects of colonialism and the environmental impact of anthropocentric extractivism that accompanies it. As a linchpin in Cabral’s theoretical framework, insubmission serves (...) to structure and impart meaning to other concepts. Notably, it provides fresh insights into the multifaceted concept of ‘resistance’. Cabral underscores the imperative of combating dehumanization through physical fortitude (physical and armed resistance), intellectual resilience (cultural resistance), and institutional strength (political resistance). Additionally, it emphasizes the necessity of averting environmental catastrophes through a socio-economic development model (economic resistance) underpinned by a resolute ethical commitment to responsible soil conservation practices. La presente contribución tiene por objeto examinar el problema de la relación entre las esencias y Dios en la metafísica de Leibniz, fundamentalmente a la luz de la oposición y evolución de dos modelos que dan cuenta de una transición significativa en su metafísica de las esencias, a saber, un modelo teo-mereológico según el cual las esencias constituyen la naturaleza ontológica de Dios y, en el límite, se identifican a él (1668 – 1676) y un modelo representacional que hace de (...) las esencias objetos intencionales del entendimiento de Dios, sin que ellas constituyan propiamente, ni puedan identificarse a Dios ni a su entendimiento (1680 en adelante). Por medio de un análisis de diversos manuscritos de Leibniz, así como una remisión a algunos estudios relativos a la ontología leibniziana de las esencias, nuestro propósito consiste, particularmente, en mostrar de qué manera y por qué el modelo teo-mereológico adoptado por el joven Leibniz es superado por un modelo representacional. Theodor Adorno’s thinking on the essay is an essential part of the recent theoretical development on the essay film. However, the reception of his reflection on the essay in that context does not connect with the breadth of his aesthetic and epistemological thought. This proposal explores how the articulation of his vision of the essay, his philosophy of non-identity, his aesthetic theory and his lesser-known appreciations of cinema contribute other arguments to the understanding of the essay film —in general, of (...) essayistic or audiovisual essay forms— as an aesthetic phenomenon. The connection of The essay as form with other works by Adorno allows us to reconsider his position in relation to the essay and art, to broaden his contributions to make the audiovisual essay intelligible and, in general, some of the most radical aesthetic paths of contemporary cinematography. In this article, I discuss two problematic assumptions in the scenario of peer disagreements: the idealized notion of Epistemic Symmetry and the Uniqueness Thesis. In recent literature on disagreements there is a distinction between real and apparent disagreements, and the main epistemological questions show up only in legitimate cases not in apparent ones. Thus, since an idealized Epistemic Symmetry seems unlikely this would prevent the occurrence of real peer disagreements. Another problematic point is the Uniqueness Thesis, which says that a (...) body of evidence justifies only one proposition or only one doxastic attitude towards a given proposition. However, based on this principle, epistemic peers should converge and not disagree, as they access the same body of evidence. Like this, idealized symmetry and the uniqueness thesis seem not to corroborate the occurrence of real peer disagreements and we should give up at least one of these assumptions. Thus, I offer an argument in favor of the maintenance of the uniqueness thesis and propose a reformulation for the notion of epistemic symmetry. (shrink)

A presente investigação analisa o pensamento de Hannah Arendt acerca da alienação do ser humano na modernidade e as implicações desse processo na crise política que se gesta na sociedade tecnodigital no cenário atual. Para essa discussão, além das contribuições teóricas de Arendt, exploraremos hermeneuticamente a apropriação que Byung-Chul Han realiza do pensamento da filósofa para examinar, hodiernamente, o mundo infocrático, dominado por códigos digitais que afetam a política e todas as dimensões da vida planetária.

In this paper I object some of the criticisms Wahlberg (2017. “Meso-Level Objects, Powers, and Simultaneous Causation.” Metaphysica 18 (1): 107–25) wages against Mumford and Anjum's (2011. Getting Causes from Powers . Oxford: Oxford University Press) account of simultaneous causation. A brief outlook on Wahlberg’s argument in favour of sequential causation is introduced. A first objection is presented and it is shown that sequential causation cannot deal with one of Mumford and Anjum’s argument: the possibility of prevention. When sequential and (...) simultaneous causation are put side by side and how the causal process in each of them interact with a subtractive preventer is analysed, sequential causation becomes visibly flawed while simultaneous causation accommodates the prevention. Then, a second objection argues that the solution Wahlberg puts forward is defective and the time intervals marking the beginning of the cause or effect merely change where the problem appears. Finally, I retort a series of concerns Wahlberg stresses about the structure of simultaneous causation: temporal directedness, causal configuration and non-negligible change and time. (shrink)

O problema lógico do mal é a alegação de que a existência de Deus e a existência de mal no mundo são logicamente inconsistentes. Neste artigo, descrevemos o sistema N3, baseado em partes na contribuição de Nieznański (2007, 2008), que oferece uma resposta ao problema lógico do mal através da refutação de uma versão do determinismo religioso. Argumentamos especificamente que, dados os resultados de N3, a existência de Deus não é contraditória com a do mal, e portanto, o teísmo clássico (...) não pode ser considerado irracional com base no problema lógico do mal. Nossa abordagem pode ser considerada um caso de lógica da religião, ou seja, de lógica aplicada ao discurso religioso. (shrink)

Em uma sociedade a instauração de conflitos de pretensões não é aprazível para os cidadãos, sendo necessário o uso de formas e instrumentos para que ele seja eliminado. Diante deste panorama conflituoso surge o Direito como mediador social, pois funciona como uma ferramenta de participação que tem a habilidade de promover a realização da cidadania, buscando instalar e restituir pactos sociais, tornando os sujeitos conscientes de seus direitos e deveres e mais solidários perante as desordens sociais experimentados por distintos sujeitos. (...) Para Habermas (1997), o direito está situado em um conflito entre facticidade e validade, entre o que se encontra no nível factual e o no normativo. “O que é válido precisa estar em condições de comprovar-se contra as objeções apresentadas factualmente” (Habermas, 1997, p. 56). É uma relação conflituosa posicionada internamente e externamente ao próprio direito. O interesse de Habermas está ancorado no ponto de vista metódico, com o qual a sociologia do direito não pode prescindir de uma reconstrução das condições de validade do acordo de legalidade, pressuposto nos modernos sistemas de direito. Para Habermas, a positivação do direito moderno e a diferenciação entre direito e moral não faz desaparecer a pretensão de legitimação do direito, ao passo que mesmo a positividade jurídica pós-metafísica necessita de princípios justificados racionalmente e, dessa maneira, universais. Na teoria social de Max Weber verificou a concretização do direito como um modo de moralização do ordenamento jurídico, com a caracterização da estrutura formal do direito e a sua indispensabilidade. Esse procedimento é chamado de juridificação, pois conjectura o aumento da normatização jurídica sobre a vida social. Em Kant, sua forma do “imperativo categórico” é instrumentada com características discursivas e consistirão no representante para do processo legislativo, que opera de modo normativo ao respaldar as leis jurídicas que tem a possibilidade de se tornarem uma aceitação universal e atua de forma disciplinadora às normas que se encontrem em conflito com os princípios do direito. De modo nunca antes visto, crises de diferentes matrizes tem eclodido nos quatro cantos da Terra, se estabelecendo no mais das vezes como estados permanentes a experiência social humana. Das tragédias decorrentes dos efeitos do aquecimento global a pandemia de Covid-19, a humanidade tem convivido com um fenômeno comum do norte ao sul da aldeia global, a ascensão de forças políticas alinhavadas a espectros ideológicos de extrema direita. Este fenômeno tem sido atribuído, sobretudo, ao fluxo massivo de desinformação como estratégia (...) de comunicação com as massas viabilizadas por meio das ditas “redes sociais”, aquecidas pelo lucrativo modelo de negócios das plataformas. Com pouco dissenso, pesquisadores têm concluído que essa relação tem provocado uma aparente desordem informacional, que por sua vez sintetizaria diversos aspectos próprios dessa dita “nova era”, tais como: pós-verdade, fake news, redes de ódio e negacionismo. Na contramão deste entendimento, amparados na teoria da informação da 2ª geração cibernética e na perspectiva dialética dos processos infocomunicacionais buscamos problematizar como esta nova ordem social produzida pela desinformação tem reajustado novos sentidos sobre o mundo provocando uma crise na ordem das referências sociais. Valendo-nos da relação entre os conceitos de sistema, ambiente e contexto, na produção de sentidos sobre o mundo, concluímos que a desinformação não tem se constituído como propriedade de desordem informacional, mas como princípio regulador de uma nova ordem sedimentada em mentiras, alucinações, propaganda, intolerância e barbárie, elementos que põe em xeque os princípios que orientam a ordem civilizatória e o ideário de democracia que norteia a Modernidade. Este artigo faz uma comparação entre a antiga noção estoica da filosofia entendida como uma “arte de viver”, retomada por autores contemporâneos como Michel Foucault e Pierre Hadot, e a atual filosofia acadêmica. O artigo sugere que essas duas formas de enxergar a filosofia não são mutuamente excludentes e que é possível adotar uma visão da filosofia como arte de viver na atualidade, embora essa visão extrapole os limites da prática acadêmica.

Resumo: Trata-se de trabalho de cunho teórico-metodológico que objetiva abordar os conceitos e processos fundamentais para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa na perspectiva da Hermenêutica Crítica de Paul Ricoeur, refletindo a fecundidade científica e formativa deste exercício no campo da pesquisa educacional. Tem como método a pesquisa documental desenvolvida pela sistemática da revisão bibliográfica realizada sob o critério de relevância e enfoque temático das obras selecionadas, que se apresenta na forma de um ensaio. Resulta deste a compreensão das etapas fenomenológica, hermenêutica (...) e filosófica, como caminho estruturante do que Ricoeur denomina como inteligência dos símbolos, bem como emergem os conceitos de símbolo, compreensão, evento, dito e dizer, como pertinentes à construção e interpretação de informações configuradas como dados da investigação. Considera-se que a hermenêutica crítica se constitui como uma alternativa criativa, crítica e auto formativa da consciência de si e do mundo, aspectos que contribuem para o desenvolvimento da pesquisa em educação e da formação dos pesquisadores, o que torna a abordagem relevante para o campo. Paul Ricoeur’s Critical Hermeneutics: a methodical perspective to research in Education Abstract: This work is of a theoretical-methodological nature that aims to address the fundamental concepts and processes for the development of research from the perspective of Paul Ricoeur's Critical Hermeneutics, reflecting the scientific and formative richness of this exercise in the field of educational research. The method employed is documentary research, developed through a systematic literature review based on criteria of relevance and thematic focus of the selected works, which is presented in the form of an essay. This results in an understanding of the phenomenological, hermeneutical, and philosophical stages as a structuring path of what Ricoeur calls the intelligence of symbols. Additionally, concepts such as symbol, understanding, event, saying, and said emerge as pertinent to the construction and interpretation of information configured as data for investigation. It is considered that critical hermeneutics constitutes a creative, critical, and self-formative alternative for self-awareness and awareness of the world, aspects that contribute to the development of research in education and the training of researchers, making this approach relevant to the field. La Hermenéutica Crítica de Paul Ricoeur: una perspectiva metódica para la investigación en educación Resumen: Se trata de un trabajo de carácter teórico-metodológico que tiene como objetivo abordar los conceptos y procesos fundamentales para el desarrollo de la investigación desde la perspectiva de la Hermenéutica Crítica de Paul Ricoeur, reflejando la fecundidad científica y formativa de este ejercicio en el campo de la investigación educativa. Su método es la investigación documental desarrollada a través de la sistemática de la revisión bibliográfica realizada bajo el criterio de relevancia y enfoque temático de las obras seleccionadas, que se presenta en forma de ensayo. Esto resulta en la comprensión de las etapas fenomenológica, hermenéutica y filosófica, como camino estructurante de lo que Ricoeur denomina inteligencia de los símbolos; así como emergen los conceptos de símbolo, comprensión, evento, dicho y decir, como pertinentes a la construcción e interpretación de información configurada como datos de la investigación. Se considera que la hermenéutica crítica se constituye como una alternativa creativa, crítica y autoformativa de la conciencia de sí mismo y del mundo, aspectos que contribuyen al desarrollo de la investigación en educación y a la formación de los investigadores, lo que hace que este enfoque sea relevante para el campo. O artigo reconstitui o mal-estar decorrente da descoberta do acervo de Cornelius Gurlitt (1932-2014) contendo mais de mil peças de obras de arte valiosas espoliadas pelos nazistas a serviço de Hitler entre 1933 e 1945. Mostra que o estado alemão concedeu posse das obras à família Gurlitt e informa que as famílias espoliadas, em contraponto, passaram a reivindicar o patrimônio de seus antepassados tão logo descobriram o seu paradeiro. E, por fim, apresenta essa tensão como um complexo dilema entre justiça (...) e a memória. (shrink)

Tido como um dos principais pensadores da Teoria Crítica, Habermas (2015) contribuiu significativamente para a compreensão da mudança estrutural das relações sociais, culturais e históricas. Sua abordagem parte da análise das transformações na esfera pública e da evolução das formas de comunicação. a perspectiva de Habermas sobre a mudança estrutural das relações sociais, culturais e históricas oferece uma análise profunda das dinâmicas sociais contemporâneas, destacando a importância da esfera pública da linguagem e da participação democrática nesse processo em constante evolução (...) (Deleuze, 2000). O estado de desamparo vivenciado pela invisibilidade gera angústia nos adolescentes abrigados em unidades de acolhimento institucional que não têm assegurados seus direitos fundamentais e não são reconhecidas pela sociedade e pelo próprio estado o qual tem o dever de guarda e formação dos mesmos. O estigma associado à institucionalização é outro fator contribuinte para o sofrimento social (Carreteiro, 2003). A sociedade frequentemente marginaliza esses jovens, rotulando-os de forma negativa e limitando suas oportunidades futuras. Esse estigma pode afetar a autoestima e a autoimagem dos jovens, exacerbando ainda mais seu sofrimento. Habermas enfatiza a importância da participação democrática e do diálogo público na formulação das leis e políticas relacionadas à adoção, buscando garantir que as decisões sejam tomadas levando em consideração os interesses das crianças e adolescentes e de suas necessidades individuais. Ele critica abordagens paternalistas ou autoritárias que possam desconsiderar a voz e os direitos das crianças, defendendo uma abordagem mais inclusiva e participativa na elaboração das políticas de proteção à juventude no contexto da adoção. O que proponho nesse artigo é demonstrar interpretativamente alguns pontos de conexão entre os termos pensamento da identidade e o fetichismo na filosofia de T. W. Adorno (1903-1969). Essa conexão é parte de uma elaboração, ou uma ampliação, do conceito de fetichismo na filosofia adorniana cuja evidência surge a partir de duas perspectivas interpretativas: [i] por uma interpretação externa à filosofia de Adorno, tal como uma história filosófica do conceito; e [i.i.] por uma interpretação interna à sua filosofia, considerando o (...) fetichismo como elemento de constelação de seu pensamento e, consequentemente, demonstrando sua conexão com o pensamento da identidade. Enfim, nesse artigo me aterei a essa interpretação interna à filosofia de Adorno, usando a obra Dialética Negativa (1966), bem como a obra Dialética do Esclarecimento (1947), escrita em parceria com M. Horkheimer (1895-1973), a fim de atingir o objetivo proposto. (shrink)

Resumen: Este artículo propone una reflexión acerca de la noción de progreso. Una noción que recibió una contribución especial de Immanuel Kant, quien le otorgó la condición de finalidad y objetivo de las conciencias y de la historia humana. Esta condición, un poco más tarde, fue cuestionada y reformulada por Charles Darwin, quien, desde una ciencia de la vida, concibió tanto para los organismos vivos como para la humanidad un progreso con el fin de su conservación y reproducción, como resultado (...) de lo que él llamó “variación ciega”. Por último, esta querella recibió de Georges Canguilhem cuidados y desarrollos que resultaron en una nueva y distinta noción de progreso que tiene como contenido principal el concepto de normatividad biológica, aplicable tanto a los organismos vivos como a las organizaciones sociales. Un concepto que, a la manera bachelardiana, “niega y complementa” la noción de progreso de sus antecesores. Abstract: This article offers a reflection on the notion of progress. A notion that received a special contribution from Immanuel Kant, who gave it the condition of purpose and objective of consciences and human history. A little later, this condition was questioned and reformulated by Charles Darwin who, from a science of life, conceived both for living organisms and for humanity a progress with no other purpose than that of their conservation and reproduction, as a result of what he called “blind variation”. Finally, this quarrel received from Georges Canguilhem care and development that resulted in a new and distinct notion of progress that has as its main content the concept of biological normativity, applicable both to living organisms and to social organizations. A concept that, in the Bachelardian manner, “denies and complements” the notion of progress of its predecessors. (shrink)

John Stuart Mill is central to parallel debates in mainstream contemporary political epistemology and philosophy of federalism concerning the epistemic dimension(s) of legitimate authority. Many scholars invoke Mill to support epistemic arguments for democratic decision-making and decentralized federalism as a means of conferring democratic legitimacy. This article argues that Millian considerations instead provide reason to reject common epistemic arguments for decentralized federalism. Combining Mill's own insights about the epistemic costs of decentralization and recent work in philosophy, politics, and economics undermines (...) purportedly Millian arguments for federalism focused on political experimentation, diversity and participation. Contrary to many interpretations, Millian considerations weaken, rather than strengthen, arguments for federalism. Any valid justification for federalism must instead rest on non-epistemic considerations. This conclusion is notable regardless of how one interprets Mill. But it also supports Mill's stated preference for local decisions subject to central oversight. (shrink)

O presente trabalho analisará o conceito de “fetichismo da mercadoria cultural” na Dialética do Esclarecimento (1944), obra de co-autoria de M. Horkheimer (1885-1973) e T. W. Adorno (1903-1969), visando enfatizá-lo como uma ampliação do conceito de fetichismo marxiano, pois se trata de relacioná-lo ao modo de propagação do bem cultural denominado Indústria Cultural. Para tanto, estabelecer-se-á a imbricação entre o referido conceito e o conceito kantiano de finalidade sem fim da Arte.

Essa pesquisa teve como proposta realizar um estudo acerca da angústia na obra do escritor Haruki Murakami (1949-), tendo como ponto de apoio secundário a teoria de Sigmund Freud (1858-1939) da angústia. Visamos, com esse estudo, lançar luz sobre a literatura como modelo de leitura da vida humana, em nosso caso, uma leitura das angústias humanas a partir da literatura. Para isso, iremos abordar o próprio gênero literário em que a obra de Murakami está circunscrita, os principais conceitos que dão (...) suporte a esse caráter angustiante, presentes no texto murakamiano, e a influência de concepções e ideias filosóficos em sua obra. Como por exemplo, a teoria da Vontade de Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860) e a ideia do lugar do pensamento, postulado por Hannah Arendt (1906-1975) no quarto capítulo da obra “A vida do espírito". No ensaio “A Transição da Coisa ao Objeto” quisemos traçar uma vereda gnosiológica de ligação entre o horizonte noumênico e o horizonte fenomênico a partir da tentativa de precisar as analogias e diferenciações entre a “coisa-em-si”, a “coisa” e o “objeto”, como elementos próprio do percurso do conhecimento, e tendo a noção de representação como um dos fundamentos conceituais. No presente ensaio tratamos das condições e possibilidade de um objeto conter sentidos para além da sua função de significante. Para isso (...) ampliamos o conceito de recipiência, em seus sentidos conotativo e denotativo, apresentando-o por meio de uma figuração mais concreta e visual que ultrapassa a ideia de signo, devido à condição comum de recipiência de um objeto, para além da sua condição de marco e ou de significante de alguma coisa, de objetos outros e de fatos diversos. Tais questões foram refletidas experimentalmente a partir da Epistemologia Metafórica de Feliciano de Mira (2013). (shrink)

Through a comparative analysis, it becomes evident that Eastern and Western philosophies approach time from distinct philosophical paradigms, influencing their respective views on existence, reality, and the human experience._.

Este estudo de revisão sistemática teve como objetivo identificar práticas de saúde nas comunidades quilombolas, abordando saberes tradicionais e a atuação de profissionais de saúde. Foram analisados 633 estudos, dos quais 19 foram incluídos, abordando práticas como uso de plantas medicinais e atuação de enfermeiras(os), que devem adaptar suas práticas às especificidades culturais quilombolas. Foram utilizados os seguintes critérios de inclusão: publicações em português, com foco em práticas de saúde quilombolas entre janeiro de 2009 e novembro de 2023, e acessíveis (...) nas bases de dados BVS, Google Acadêmico, Scielo, banco de teses e dissertações da CAPES. Os termos de busca foram: Quilombo, Práticas em saúde e Saberes de pessoas quilombolas associados ao operador booleano ‘And’. Os critérios de exclusão incluíram duplicatas e estudos fora do escopo temático. Dos resultados se evidencia como consideração a necessidade de políticas que integrem práticas tradicionais de saúde das comunidades quilombolas ao Sistema Único de Saúde e a importância de formar profissionais capacitados para atuar respeitosamente nesses contextos. O cineclube escolar configura-se como um espaço de debate e reflexão dentro do ambiente educacional, proporcionando aos estudantes a oportunidade de exploração, crítica e análise de temas sociais, culturais e éticos a partir das obras cinematográficas. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho busca tecer reflexões sobre o potencial do cineclube escolar como um espaço de formação voltado ao uso da fala, da construção de diálogos e de entendimentos intersubjetivos, por meio de articulações possíveis com a Teoria do Agir Comunicativo de Habermas. (...) Para isso, a fim de contextualizar tais questões e estabelecer as interações entre aquilo que se constitui como a prática cineclubista escolar com os pressupostos teóricos do agir comunicativo, realizou-se um levantamento de estudos que versam sobre o uso do cinema em sala de aula e a prática cineclubista como espaço de comunicação, bem como o referencial teórico de Habermas e seus interlocutores. As discussões apontam que, ao ser orientado pelos princípios do agir comunicativo, o formato de cineclube escolar pode apresentar o potencial de contribuir significativamente para a construção de um espaço de aprendizagem voltado ao diálogo igualitário, a autonomia e a participação ativa dos alunos, contrastando com as práticas instrumentais ainda presentes no ensino mediado pelo cinema. Recently, the pandemic context in which the world finds itself has inspired studies that sought to evaluate to mental health and the way people are relating to the purpose of understanding and promoting improvements psychological health. The epidemiological and public health literature shows that social connection protects and promotes mental health, being an important clinical tool for reducing anxiety, depression, and stress. Thinking in the broad sense of connection, that is, feeling and perceiving oneself connected with the environment, applied to (...) the context of sport, it is suggested that social connection could be related to the interactions in the practice of sport. Although playing sports can promote mental health, there are few findings on the topic in the context of a pandemic and with physical sports and electronic sports players. In this sense, the present study aims to assess the extent to which social connection and mental health indicators are correlated in a sample of sports and e-sports players. The participants were 401 Brazilian physical sports and e-sports players, mostly male and single, who filled in the Social Connectedness Scale, the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale, and demographic questions. The results indicated that social connection was negatively correlated and also predict the anxiety, depression, and stress. When comparing sports and e-sports players, a statistically significant difference was identified in the levels of social connection [t = −3.41; sportsmean = 4.53 ; e-sportsmean = 4.14 ] and depression [t = 2.90; sportsmean = 1.10 ; e-sportsmean = 0.85 ]. These findings can serve as a theoretical basis for the development of intervention programs and promoting discussions that focus on the analysis of aspects promoting psychological health in sports context. Este artigo busca analisar os efeitos estéticos que surgem do diagnóstico do filósofo esloveno Slavoj Zizek, sobre o conceito de ideologia cínica. Segundo Zizek, tal conceito não corresponde mais à definição clássica de ideologia, ou seja, de um discurso que mascara seus reais interesses. Ao contrário da forma tradicional, a ideologia cínica não oculta seus interesses particulares por trás de uma aparente universalidade ideológica, mas os assume claramente. Na sociedade capitalista contemporânea, onde emerge tal ideologia, a crítica à mimesis ou (...) a “fascinação” fetichista da realidade social tornou-se obsoleta. Este aspecto fica como fica evidente em alguns elementos da cultura capitalista como os ready-mades, a pop art, o design, os quadrinhos, o cinema comercial, a moda, a publicidade, e o entretenimento televisivo. A arte contemporânea é uma espécie de “estetizaçao”da insuficiência do desvelamento da ideologia tão almejada pelo programa estético da arte moderna. (shrink)

This article’s jumping-off point is the highly incisive but often-ignored claim by the French doctor, Louis-Jacques Tanon, in 1922 that rats acted as plague reservoirs in Paris; in other words, that they harboured the plague bacillus but were refractory to it. This claim partially reframed the fight against this disease in the French capital in the 1920s, which became more centred on surveilling the plague reservoir rather than on destroying rats. Drawing upon Tanon’s hypothesis, this article explores the emergence, evolution, (...) and several iterations of the idea of disease reservoirs in the early twentieth century. On the one hand, it describes the crafting of a range of ideas with which Tanon was directly or indirectly dialoguing, namely, that rats could present a stage called chronic plague, which was especially developed in India; and that human populations, especially children, acted as sources or reservoirs of malaria in Sierra Leone and Algeria. On the other hand, this article shows how Tanon created original reasoning by combining and reformulating some of these ideas and applying them to Paris. Thus, this article contributes to the early history of reasoning in terms of disease reservoirs, as well as presenting a more dynamic history of microbiology by showing how concepts crafted in the “Rest” found their place in Europe. O artigo reflete sobre a produção do gênero musical metal, após o fim da guerra civil angolana. Nesta conjuntura de reestruturação econômica, social e política, o acesso aos meios de produção fonográfica ainda consiste em um desafio para os integrantes do movimento musical. Para observar tais dinâmicas musicais, destaco que o gênero musical possui regras sonoras, como solos de guitarra, distorção e tempos rápidos, técnicas de canto como o gutural e vocais gritados; regras visuais, como o uso de vestuários como (...) camisas de bandas ou os conceitos estéticos reproduzidos em capas de álbuns, e líricas, formas de circulação e de consumo, suas audiências, performances e respostas corporais. Para tanto, o artigo apresenta as peculiaridades desta cena musical através do método etnográfico, com trabalhos de campo realizados em períodos diferentes dos anos de 2014, 2016 e 2017. (shrink)
