An Attractor Model of Lexical Conceptual Processing: Simulating Semantic Priming.George S. Cree, Ken McRae & Chris McNorgan - 1999 - Cognitive Science 23 (3):371-414.
An attractor network was trained to compute from word form to semantic representations that were based on subject‐generated features. The model was driven largely by higher‐order semantic structure. The network simulated two recent experiments that employed items included in its training set (McRae and Boisvert, 1998). In Simulation 1, short stimulus onset asynchrony priming was demonstrated for semantically similar items. Simulation 2 reproduced subtle effects obtained by varying degree of similarity. Two predictions from the model were then tested on human (...)

Evolution and Rationality: Decisions, Co-Operation and Strategic Behaviour.Samir Okasha & Ken Binmore (eds.) - 2012 - Cambridge University Press.
This volume explores from multiple perspectives the subtle and interesting relationship between the theory of rational choice and Darwinian evolution. In rational choice theory, agents are assumed to make choices that maximize their utility; in evolution, natural selection 'chooses' between phenotypes according to the criterion of fitness maximization. So there is a parallel between utility in rational choice theory and fitness in Darwinian theory. This conceptual link between fitness and utility is mirrored by the interesting parallels between formal models of (...)

    Leadership in a Performative Context: A framework for decision-making.Stephanie Chitpin & Ken Jones - 2015 - Educational Philosophy and Theory 47 (4):387-401.
This paper examines a model of decision-making within the context of current and emerging regimes of accountability being proposed and implemented for school systems in a number of jurisdictions. These approaches to accountability typically involve the use of various measurable student learning outcomes as well as other measures of performance to do with teachers and schools in general, often having high-stakes consequences. Given this context of performativity, the paper proposes a model that uses an objective knowledge growth framework, where teachers (...)

The essential Ken Wilber: an introductory reader.Ken Wilber - 1998 - Boston: Shambhala.
Ever since the publication of his first book, The Spectrum of Consciousness, written when he was twenty-three, Ken Wilber has been identified as the most comprehensive philosophical thinker of our times. This introductory sampler, designed to acquaint newcomers with his work, contains brief passages from his most popular books, ranging over a variety of topics, including levels of consciousness, mystical experience, meditation practice, death, the perennial philosophy, and Wilber's integral approach to reality, integrating matter, body, mind, soul, and spirit. Here (...)

The recognition and extraction of semantic/logical structures in HTML documents are substantially important and difficult tasks for intelligent document processing. In this paper, we show that the alignment technology is an appropriate tool, within a framework of case-based reasoning, for recognizing semantic structures inherently embedded in a series of HTML documents. That is, given a series of HTML documents and a document example of which semantic structures are explicitly indicated by a user, then the alignment can identify semantic structures in (...)

Picture Taker: Photographs by Ken Elkins.Ken Elkins & Rick Bragg - 2005 - University Alabama Press.
Ken Elkins retired as chief photographer of the Anniston Star in 2000, and this selection of his work demonstrates his brilliant eye for finding and capturing images of rural southern lives and landscapes in all their difficulty, candor, and humor. These are unadorned images of a timeless landscape and proud resourceful people, who know well their neighbors, honor their past, and face the tests of daily life with wit and a stoic sense of endurance.

Freedom? Nothingness? Time? Fluxus and the Laboratory of Ideas.Ken Friedman - 2012 - Theory, Culture and Society 29 (7-8):372-398.
At the 50-year anniversary of Fluxus, Ken Friedman looks back on the activities and achievements of a laboratory for art, architecture, design, and music. This article examines the political and economic context of the 1950s against which Fluxus emerged to become the most radical and experimental art project of the 1960s, thoroughly international in structure, with women as well as men in central roles. The article examines the hermeneutical interface of life and art through 12 Fluxus ideas: globalism, the unity (...)

Playing for Real: A Text on Game Theory.Ken Binmore - 2007 - Oxford University Press USA.
Ken Binmore's previous game theory textbook, Fun and Games, carved out a significant niche in the advanced undergraduate market; it was intellectually serious and more up-to-date than its competitors, but also accessibly written. Its central thesis was that game theory allows us to understand many kinds of interactions between people, a point that Binmore amply demonstrated through a rich range of examples and applications. This replacement for the now out-of-date 1991 textbook retains the entertaining examples, but changes the organization to (...)

How Did Zhong Ziqi Understand Bo Ya’s Heart-Mind?: Hetero-referential Aspects of Early Chinese Music Theory.Ken Berthel - 2016 - Philosophy East and West 66 (1):259-270.
Words are signs that refer to particular things. … The meaning of a tone, however, lies not in what it points to but in the pointing itself; more precisely, in the different way, in the individual gesture, with which each tone points toward the same place. The five tones deafen our ears.In comparing the semiotics of language and music, Western music theorist Victor Zuckerkandl identified what he saw as a fundamental difference: words had the hetero-referential capability of pointing beyond themselves, beyond (...)

A contingency perspective of pro-organizational motives, unethical pro-organizational behavior, and organizational citizenship behavior.Ken Cheng, Panpan Hu, Limin Guo, Yifei Wang & Yinghui Lin - 2022 - Frontiers in Psychology 13.
Although the effects of pro-organizational motives on pro-organizational behaviors [i.e., unethical pro-organizational behavior and organizational citizenship behavior ] and their boundaries have been explored to some extent, extant studies are rather piecemeal and in need of synthesis and extension. Based on prior motivational research on pro-organizational behaviors, we developed a comprehensive contingent model in which moral identity and impression management motives would moderate the links between pro-organizational motives, UPB, and OCB. Adopting a time-lagged design, we collected data from 218 salespeople (...)

    Relationality Across East and West.Ken Cheng & Jun-Hyeok Kwak (eds.) - 2025 - Routledge.
This book explores how the concept of 'relationality' can offer a strong basis for cross-cultural dialogue between Western and non-Western traditions of moral and political philosophy. As addressed in this book, the implications of relationality go beyond a Eurocentric binary of Western individualism and non-Western collectivism. Instead, the contributors seek to establish an appropriate discursive stance for understanding and deliberating over relationality across cultural boundaries. Through an investigation of the theoretical and practical meanings of relationality across East and West, it (...)

I have given this essay the title: “The Genealogy of Avenging Spirits” after Nietzsche's treatise: “The Genealogy of Morals” (Zur Genealogie der Moral). In this book Nietzsche clarifies the origins and essence of Christian morality which constitutes the basis of European civilization. In a similar fashion I shall endeavor to point out the origins and essence of the concept of avenging spirits which seems to me to form the basis of Japanese civilization. It may seem strange to talk about a concept (...)

    (1 other version)Rational Decisions.Ken Binmore - 2009 - Princeton University Press.
It is widely held that Bayesian decision theory is the final word on how a rational person should make decisions. However, Leonard Savage--the inventor of Bayesian decision theory--argued that it would be ridiculous to use his theory outside the kind of small world in which it is always possible to "look before you leap." If taken seriously, this view makes Bayesian decision theory inappropriate for the large worlds of scientific discovery and macroeconomic enterprise. When is it correct to use Bayesian (...)

Between the two: a nomadic inquiry into collaborative writing and subjectivity.Ken Gale - 2010 - Newcastle upon Tyne: Cambridge Scholars Press. Edited by Jonathan Wyatt.
In this unique work, Ken Gale and Jonathan Wyatt bring together three areas of scholarship: collaborative writing as method of inquiry, the philosophical approaches of the French philosopher, Gilles Deleuze, and the performativity of both writing and the "self". The book is a reflexive exploration into the theory and practice of collaborative writing, with their between-the-twos sequences of exchanged writings using a variety of forms and genres at the book's heart. Their collaboration offers an experimental, transgressive and nomadic inquiry into (...)

A wide variety of forms of domination hasresulted in a highly heterogeneous health riskcategory, ``the vulnerable.'''' The study of healthinequities sheds light on forces thatgenerate, sustain, and alter vulnerabilities toillness, injury, suffering and death. Thispaper analyzes the case of a high-risk teenfrom a Boston ghetto that illuminatesintersections between ``race'''' and class in theconstruction of vulnerability in the US.Exploration of his ``wounds'''' helps specify howlarge-scale social and cultural forces becomeembodied as individual experience of disparatehealth risk. The case demonstrates that healthinequities would (...)
