Marian Zdziechowski a Katolická moderna. Na tropie związków polskiego i czeskiego modernizmu katolickiego.Michał Rogalski - 2014 - Studia Z Historii Filozofii 5 (1):95-109.
Author looks into the problem of Marian Zdziechowski’s cooperation with the journal „Nový život”, the newsletter for Czech Catholic modernists. The background for author’s considerations is a historical outline of The Modernist Crisis, its intellectual origins and historic consequences. From 1902 to 1905 five Zdziechowski’s essays were translated and published in „Nový život”. The ideas of the Polish philosopher significantly influenced the development of the Catholic modernism in Bohemia. Zdziechowski discussed such issues as: the crisis and the revival of religion (...)

  2. Gadamerian hermeneutics and irony: Between Strauss and Derrida.Robert Dostal - 2008 - Research in Phenomenology 38 (2):247-269.
Against the background of Gadamer's hermeneutics of trust, for which the primary concern of the hermeneutical enterprise is the matter under discussion, the Sache, this essay raises the question of Gadamer's treatment of irony. Gadamer and Gadamerians have criticized the hermeneutics of suspicion—a hermeneutics that always looks under the surface of what is said to see what is hidden. This would seem to make irony a problematic aspect of texts and discourse for a Gadamerian hermeneutics. Nowhere in Gadamer's corpus can (...)

Philosophical applications of free logic.Karel Lambert (ed.) - 1991 - New York: Oxford University Press.
Free logic, an alternative to traditional logic, has been seen as a useful avenue of approach to a number of philosophical issues of contemporary interest. In this collection, Karel Lambert, one of the pioneers in, and the most prominent exponent of, free logic, brings together a variety of published essays bearing on the application of free logic to philosophical topics ranging from set theory and logic to metaphysics and the philosophy of religion. The work of such distinguished philosophers as (...)

    Note on Deduction Theorems in contraction‐free logics.Karel Chvalovský & Petr Cintula - 2012 - Mathematical Logic Quarterly 58 (3):236-243.
This paper provides a finer analysis of the well-known form of the Local Deduction Theorem in contraction-free logics . An infinite hierarchy of its natural strengthenings is introduced and studied. The main results are the separation of its initial four members and the subsequent collapse of the hierarchy.

    A Much Disputed “Whole” at Phaedrus 270.Karel Thein - 2012 - Croatian Journal of Philosophy 12 (2):139-152.
The article discusses several possible interpretations of Socrates’ suggestion that we cannot “understand the nature of soul satisfactorily without understanding the nature of the whole” (Phaedrus 270c1–2). Against those who take the “whole” implied here for the cosmic whole, it argues that nothing in the Phaedrus justifies this interpretation. In the light of both Socrates’ conception of rhetoric in this dialogue and his image of the tripartite soul in the palinode, the “whole” whose knowledge is prerequisite to knowing the soul’s (...)

A Simple Value-Distinction Approach Aids Transparency in Farm Animal Welfare Debate.Karel Greef, Frans Stafleu & Carolien Lauwere - 2006 - Journal of Agricultural and Environmental Ethics 19 (1):57-66.
Public debate on acceptable farm animal husbandry suffers from a confusion of tongues. To clarify positions of various stakeholder groups in their joint search for acceptable solutions, the concept of animal welfare was split up into three notions: no suffering, respect for intrinsic value, and non-appalling appearance of animals. This strategy was based on the hypothesis that multi-stakeholder solutions should be based on shared values rather than on compromises. The usefulness of such an artificial value distinction strategy was tested in (...)

    Perceive, Co-opt, Modify, and Live! Organism as a Centre of Experience.Karel Kleisner - 2011 - Biosemiotics 4 (2):223-241.
Organic appearances are largely neglected by contemporary biology; partly because they are regarded as superficial effects of causes concealed beneath the surface. The persuasion that everything what does exist is existent for some immediately non-apparent reasons belongs to a general belief of modern science. All organisms are of the same evolutionary origin and of the same world wherein appearance coincides with existence. In this study, living beings are approached as appearing centers of experience that reflects their evolutionary history. From biohermeneutic (...)

Public Knowledge and Common Secrets. Secrecy and its Limits in the Early-Modern Netherlands.Karel Davids - 2005 - Early Science and Medicine 10 (3):411.
Openness of knowledge was in the Dutch Republic no more a natural state of affairs than in other parts of Europe at the time, but it became dominant there at an earlier date than elsewhere. This puzzling phenomenon is the subject of this essay. The article shows that tendencies to secrecy in crafts and trades in the Netherlands were by no means absent and that public authorities were not principled supporters of openness. Openness of knowledge did not prevail because arguments (...)

Liberté et incarnation. Esquisse des conditions de l’existence humaine selon Jan Patočka.Karel Novotný - 2013 - Chiasmi International 15:111-126.
The idea of radical, historical freedom which Patočka, beginning in the 1930s, thought of as a movement of transcendence, cannot be comprehended without taking embodiment – the human being’s corporeal and intercorporeal anchorage in the world – into account. This said, we consider the pertinence and permanence, for both human freedom and corporality, of a moment – to all appearances marginal – that constitutes in reality more of a limit for each of these elements and, as a result, allows a (...)

Gadamer's hermeneutics: between phenomenology and dialectic.Robert J. Dostal - 2022 - Evanston, Illinois: Northwestern University Press.
This book provides a comprehensive and critical account of Gadamer's hermeneutical philosophy. Robert J. Dostal shows that at the heart of Gadamer's enterprise is the thesis that "being that can be understood is language.".

That's molecular revolution: it isn't a slogan or a program, it's something that I (...)

Authority.Robert J. Dostal - 2015 - In Niall Keane & Chris Lawn, A Companion to Hermeneutics. Chichester, West Sussex, UK: Wiley-Blackwell. pp. 197–204.
Authority, in its origin is a political concept, has largely maintained its political character in its most common and prominent usage. Etymologically “authority” is Latin: auctoritas. Perhaps the single most influential and important analysis of authority in the modern context has been provided by Max Weber who identifies Autorität with Herrschaft, domination (or, more traditionally and literally, lordship) and Herrschaft with Macht (power). Weber's account of Herrschaft provides for three kinds: traditional, legal‐rational, and charismatic. Weber's account has been taken up (...)

Positieve uitlokking van ethisch hacken. Een onderzoek naar responsible-disclosurebeleid In this contribution, the Dutch government’s acceptance of ethical hacking, by implementing a policy of responsible disclosure, is considered to be a beneficent development. Ethical hacking contributes to cybersecurity and is intrinsically desirable. The term positive incitement is proposed to describe the relatively new phenomenon of encouraging ethical hacking. Positive incitement will be analysed by making a comparison to the Dutch toleration policy regarding soft drugs, and to incitement by law enforcement. (...)
