Ethics and Professionalism.John H. Kultgen - 1988 - Philadelphia: University of Pennsylvania Press.
Exploring the relationship between morality and professional ideals, Kultgen examines the structure and organization of occupations and the ideals and ideology associated with professions. He argues that professionalization of occupations can both harm and benefit society, and that by converting occupations into organized special interest groups, the professions serve some sectors of society at the expense of others. On the other hand, he highlights the positive points of the professional ideal and explores ways in which it can be used to (...)

Autonomy and intervention: parentalism in the caring life.John H. Kultgen - 1995 - New York: Oxford University Press.
The basic relationship between people should be care, and the caring life is the highest which humans can live. Unfortunately, care that is not thoughtful slides into illegitimate intrusion on autonomy. Autonomy is a basic good, and we should not abridge it without good reason. On the other hand, it is not the only good. We must sometimes intervene in the lives of others to protect them from grave harms or provide them with important benefits. The reflective person, therefore, needs (...)

    Professional Paternalism.John Kultgen - 2014 - Ethical Theory and Moral Practice 17 (3):399-412.
This article points out how far-reaching the changes in our public life would actually have to be if we wanted to avoid paternalism altogether. For example, the widespread view that only a physician with training at a recognized institution should be allowed to perform surgery or that only an educated lawyer may provide legal council is clearly paternalistic. In fact, many professional regulations, not just in medicine and law, but also in engineering and many other areas of expertise, have a (...)

Abolition of Nuclear Weapons as a Moral Imperative.John H. Kultgen - 2015 - Lexington Books.
This book advocates for the United States to abolish nuclear weapons, arguing its necessity in terms of the harmful consequences of nuclear deterrence. Problems for Democracy.John H. Kultgen & Mary Lenzi (eds.) - 2006 - Rodopi.
This book, based on the premise that democracy promotes peace and justice, explores theoretical and practical problems that can arise or that have arisen in democratic polities. Contributors address, with clarifying analyses, such theoretical issues as the relationship between recursivist metaphysics and democracy, the relationship between the economic and political orders, and the nature of justice. Contributors offer, as well, enlightening resolutions of practical problems resulting from a history of social, political or economic injustice. Philosophy of Peace (POP), in conjunction (...)

    Saving You for Real People.John Kultgen - 1982 - Environmental Ethics 4 (1):59-67.
I criticize John Tallmadge’s attempt to derive an environmental ethic from Buber’s suggestion that we can enter into I-Thou relations with nature. I-Thou relations flourish only with beings who enter into dialogue with us, viz. human beings, and we can value other natural kinds without anthropomorphizing them.

    Veatch's new foundation for medical ethics.John Kultgen - 1985 - Journal of Medicine and Philosophy 10 (4):369-386.
Veatch proposes a "triple contract theory" as a new foundation for medical ethics. His criticisms of unilateral "physician ethics" are sound, but uncertainty as to whether he is proposing merely imaginary or real contracts vitiates his constructive arguments. If the former, he is recommending a minor heuristic device for thinking about ethics, not a foundation. If the latter, his proposal is utterly impractical and a medical covenant will have to be developed another way. Keywords: Veatch, social contract, medical covenant, medical (...)
