La première partie, " Sociologie de Jean-Michel Berthelot ", rassemble les contributions restituant des traits de son œuvre à l'aide d'études de cas précis ou de panoramas plus larges, et balise des domaines de recherche dans lesquels il s'est illustré : sociologie de l'éducation, du corps, des sciences, épistémologie des sciences sociales. La deuxième partie rend compte des perspectives ouvertes par ses travaux et de la (...) manière dont des chercheurs ont mis en œuvre ses réflexions pour leurs propres recherches. Il s'agit donc de restituer la façon dont on peut faire de la sociologie " avec " Jean-Michel Berthelot - à l'aide de ses travaux et des jalons qu'ils posent. La troisième partie est biographique en restituant l'itinéraire académique, intellectuel et humain de Berthelot, que ce soit son parcours universitaire et social, notamment à l'ENS durant mai 68, ou encore sa période " toulousaine " où sa carrière universitaire a débuté et qui en constitue une partie essentielle. This article investigates the work of processors who curate and “clean” the data sets that researchers submit to data archives for archiving and further dissemination. Based on ethnographic fieldwork conducted at the data processing unit of a major US social science data archive, I investigate how these data processors work, under which status, and how they contribute to data sharing. This article presents two main results. First, it contributes to the study of invisible technicians in science by showing that the (...) same procedures can make technical work invisible outside and visible inside the archive, to allow peer review and quality control. Second, this article contributes to the social study of scientific data sharing, by showing that the organization of data processing directly stems from the conception that the archive promotes of a valid data set—that is, a data set that must look “pristine” at the end of its processing. After critically interrogating this notion of pristineness, I show how it perpetuates a misleading conception of data as “raw” instead of acknowledging the important contribution of data processors to data sharing and social science. English summary: Within the span of a single century (from the mid-15th to the mid-16th centuries), the Greek language, which was well on its way to oblivion, became the focus of one of the most heated debates of the Renaissance period. Greek was accused by what was then a Catholic and Latin Europe of being a vehicle for ancient paganism, Byzantine schism, and even Lutheran heresy. The Council of Trent, which deemed that Roman authority was being undermined by the Vulgate's (...) philological criticism, went so far as to confirm the obvious collusion that existed between Greek and heresy. In fact, behind such accusations can be discerned the power struggles that were taking place between ecclesiastical, academic and political factions. Analysis of such confrontations and of the difficulties that Humanists had in circumventing them, infers that, despite its ultimate success, Greek literature remained suspect in Europe throughout the Counter-Reformation. In this very meticulous study, based on previously unpublished texts, of what was at stake in this anti-Greek movement (a resistance actually based on free, progressive and critical thought), the author combines the thoroughness of an historian with a mine of true anecdotes about the moral standards of that era : the censure practices, legal disputes, self-serving denouncements, etc. That, indeed, were the most evident driving forces behind the intellectual and power struggles. French description: Le grec, disparu d'Europe depuis les Grandes Invasions, fit un retour spectaculaire au XVe siecle. Mais l'enthousiasme des humanistes pour la langue d'Homere a fait oublier la violence des resistances que lui opposerent les maitres scolastiques. Lorsque Erasme osa contester la Vulgate latine au nom de la verite grecque (1516), le scandale eclata publiquement et Luther en prit argument pour contester l'autorite de Rome, si bien que les hellenistes furent accuses de faire le jeu de la Reforme. Le statut du grec se vit etroitement lie a celui de l'hebreu, l'autre langue sacree rivale du latin (l'Affaire Reuchlin). Pour extirper le mal a sa racine, le concile de Trente decida finalement d'imposer la legitimite du latin biblique (1545) et d'interdire l'acces aux sources grecques et hebraiques, puis de mettre a l'index les principaux hellenistes et leurs imprimeurs. Les etudes grecques allaient en rester durablement affaiblies dans l'Europe de la Contre-Reforme. En faisant revivre les oeuvres et les hommes qui en furent les acteurs, et en devoilant ses veritables enjeux, ce livre retrace les deux siecles de cette bataille du grec, restee un point aveugle dans l'histoire de la culture occidentale. In contrast to the traditional view of Kant as apure retributivist, the recent interpretations ofKant's theory of punishment (for instance Byrd's)propose a mixed theory of retributivism and generalprevention. Although both elements are literallyright, I try to show the shortcomings of each. I thenargue that Kant's theory of punishment is notconsistent with his own concept of law. Thus I proposeanother justification for punishment: specialdeterrence and rehabilitation. These differences concern the issues discussed or the institutional form bioethics takes. In France, bioethics was used from the end of the 1970s and focused on research ethics and issues at the beginning of life. At the national level, a permanent commission, the was created by President François Mitterrand in 1983. (...) La philosophie de Fichte est une philosophie du moi. Est-ce à dire qu'il faut y voir une philosophie de La subjectivité finie, achevant en système l'idéalisme kantien? Ou bien faut-il s'inquiéter de ce que le moi y soit aussi dit " absolu ", et chercher chez Fichte Les prémices des philosophies schettingienne et hégélienne de l'absolu? Le but de ce volume est de convaincre que la philosophie de Fichte est plutôt une pensée originale de la construction duale, contradictoire, du moi (...) humain en lequel sont à la fois opposées et réunies finitude et absoluité. Or le médium de cette synthèse vivante du fini et de l'absolu dans le moi humain, c'est la liberté comme libre choix d'elle-même. De sorte que, confondant volonté d'être soi et volonté d'être libre, la philosophie de Fichte est, comme philosophie du moi, philosophie de la liberté. Philosophie de la liberté, elle reste au double sens d'une pensée de l'autodétermination pratique du sujet fini et d'une pensée de l'absolu comme agir pur. C'est pourquoi l'intention de ce volume est de mettre en relief la valeur émancipatrice de la philosophie de Fichte tant sur le plan de l'action que celui de la spéculation. (shrink)

Kant nimmt in der Einleitung zur Metaphysik der Sitten eine Einteilung in innere und äußere Gesetzgebung vor. Beide leitet er aus demselben in der Grundlegung zur Metaphysik der Sitten formulierten kategorischen Imperativ ab, und fügt Letzterem weitere Elemente einer Grundanthropologie hinzu, die das Material für die einzelnen Teile der Rechts- und Tugendlehre darstellen. Die Zusammenhänge zwischen Rechts- und Tugendlehre sind aber komplexer als die Einteilung in äußere und innere Gesetzgebung es nahelegt. Sie teilen etwa dieselben Anwendungsmethoden und Metaphern, und bei (...) einer näheren Untersuchung der einzelnen Teile erweist sich diese Einteilung als entweder problematisch oder unscharf. In der Textinterpretation der einzelnen Beiträge kommen die genannten Zusammenhänge und Beziehungen zum Vorschein – insbesondere weil ein Teil der Autoren dieses Bandes zum Kommentar beider Werken beiträgt. Ein weiterer Schwerpunkt dieser Textinterpretationen liegt bei der kritischen Untersuchung des Ertrags dieser Werke für die entsprechenden heutigen Debatten und die Auseinandersetzung mit heutigen im weiten Sinne „Kantischen“ Positionen. Against the background of early modernism - a period that justified punishment by general deterrence - Kant is usually thought to represent a radical turn towards retributivism. For Kant, and later for Fichte and Hegel, a just punishment respects the humanity inherent in the criminal, and serves no external ends - it is instituted only because the criminal deserves it. In this original study, Jean-Christophe Merle uses close analysis of texts to show that these philosophers did not in (...) fact hold a retributivist position, or even a mixed position; instead he traces in their work the gradual emergence of views in favour of deterrence and resocialisation. He also examines Nietzsche's view that morality rests on the rejection of retribution. His final chapter offers a challenge to the retributivist position, and a defence of resocialisation, in the context of current legal theory and practice concerning the punishment of crimes against humanity. The Animal Side is a manifesto on the importance of animals for human thought. It attempts to characterize the importance, for human beings, of the fact that animals exist. Adopting a philosophical and poetic approach, the book seeks to show that animals' ways of inhabiting the earth are, for human consciousness, an expansion and an exploration of what philosophers and poets have tried to name by speaking of the Open. Beginning with the story of an encounter with a deer on (...) a road at night, the book proceeds by showing that, beyond the diversity of animal life and the ways animals differ from human beings, there is a "layer of the perceptible" on which we all draw, humans and animals alike, in our own ways. At present, however, this layer itself is at risk. Thus the book can also be read as a defense and illustration of animals' modes of being, and as a plea for their survival. (shrink)

English summary: Appearing late in metaphysics, existence became one of the unavoidable major points of philosophy. This volume traces the philosophical history of existence; born in late Antiquity to singularize the being of Christ, developed in the Middle Ages to understand the being of a created world, existence became in the Enlightenment the being of Man. French description: A la difference de nombreux concepts herites d'Aristote, l'existence fait en metaphysique une entree aussi discrete que tardive, avant de devenir un theme (...) a ce point majeur qu'aucune philosophie n'a pu s'en dispenser, en depit d'un paradoxe constitutif : l'existence n'est-elle pas l'autre absolu de la pensee? Pourquoi l'existence s'est-elle constamment maintenue, au-dela du questionnement metaphysique qui fut son horizon medieval, jusqu'a constituer un des concepts fondamentaux de toute anthropologie? Pour repondre, une histoire de l'existence dans la longue duree s'imposait, qui entreprenne d'en relever les mutations principales : nee dans l'Antiquite tardive pour singulariser l'etre du Christ, developpee au Moyen Age pour apprehender l'etre du monde cree, l'existence qualifie, aux temps des Lumieres, l'etre de l'homme. Le premier volet de cette histoire complexe analyse l'emergence de l'existence aux cotes de l'etre, puis en concurrence avec lui. The author argues the following hypothesis: the medical clinic is an experimental practice, in the sense given to this term by Claude Bernard, and the clinic is its specific laboratory. Its object is not the disease, but the patient. Careful examination of the clinic attests to its very close proximity to the experimental method, and the comparison also raises a number of difficulties. The main obstacle arises from the specificity of medicine, which involves treating individual human subjects whose words cannot (...) be suppressed. Assurant que « nous voyons toutes choses en Dieu », autrement dit par des idées universelles et infinies, la philosophie de Malebranche se doit d'affronter le problème de la connaissance des choses singulières, seules véritablement existantes. Après avoir montré que sa pensée échoue à fonder un authentique principe d'individuation physique des corps, nous tentons de mettre en évidence une difficulté identique à théoriser une véritable connaissance des êtres matériels. Ce déplacement de la question nous semble légitime dans la mesure où (...) les choses étendues ne sont accessibles qu'à partir de l'étendue intelligible et des sentiments qu'elle produit. Par là, nous souhaitons manifester l'inaptitude, peut-être irrémédiable, d'une métaphysique fondée sur la représentation à se saisir pleinement des singularités. Malebranche tells us that we see everything in Gods infinit and universal Ideas. In so doing, Malebranche seems unable to describe real knowledge of material singularities; more, it's quite difficult to discover a true principle of individuation in the physical treatment of matter. In den Kapiteln der Grundlage des Naturrechts über das Zwangsrecht weicht Fichte von Kant durch seine Definition des Zwangsrechts sowie durch den Zweck ab, den er dem Zwangsrecht zuschreibt. Während sich das Kantische Zwangsrecht lediglich einem bestehenden »Hindernis der Freiheit nach allgemeinen Gesetzen« widersetzt, ist im Kapitel über das Zwangsrecht der Zweck des Fichteschen Zwangs, die Entstehung eines solchen Hindernisses - noch vor dem Versuch - zu verhindern.

Hoy en día la mayoría de los teóricos liberales o no consideran el tema de un derecho general a la inmigración o simplemente lo rechazan. Esto contradice no sólo la doctrina tradicional del derecho natural, sino también principios actuales de justicia tales como el principio de la diferencia postulado por Rawls. En el presente artículo se propone el siguiente experimento mental: comparar la situación imaginaria en la que la inmigración proveniente del Tercer Mundo estuviera permitida sin restricciones, pero en la (...) que no hubiera ninguna prestación social o asistencial para los inmigrantes, con la situación actual en la que aunque la inmigración está muy limitada, las prestaciones sociales y asistenciales habituales se encuentran aseguradas para los inmigrantes. Contra la opinión predominante hoy en día, la suerte de los peor situados parece ser en la situación actual claramente peor que en la situación imaginaria. Teorías liberales como la rawlsiana deben superar esta inconsistencia entre sus principios de justicia y su posición con respecto a la cuestión de la inmigración y decidirse por una cuestión más coherente. Based on genetic and biochemical advances on the molecular mechanism of circadian rhythms, a computational model for the mammalian circadian clock is used to examine the dynamical bases of circadian‐clock‐related physiological disorders in humans. Entrainment by the light–dark cycle with a phase advance or a phase delay is associated with the Familial advanced sleep phase syndrome (FASPS) or the Delayed sleep phase syndrome (DSPS), respectively. Lack of entrainment corresponding to the occurrence of quasiperiodic oscillations with or without phase jump can (...) be associated with the non‐24 h sleep–wake syndrome. In the close vicinity of the entrainment domain, the model uncovers the possibility of infradian oscillations of very long period. Perturbation in the form of chronic jet lag, as used in mice, prevents entrainment of the circadian clock and results in chaotic or quasiperiodic oscillations. It is important to clarify the conditions for entrainment and for its failure because dysfunctions of the circadian clock may lead to physiological disorders, which pertain not only to the sleep–wake cycle but also to mood and cancer. Ce travail s’interroge sur les raisons de ce qui a fait le succès de la sociologie de Georges Gurvitch de 1945 à sa mort , et entend se démarquer d’une explication qui se contente de faire valoir le rôle institutionnel actif qu’eut Gurvitch dans ce qu’on a coutume d’appeler la « refondation » de la sociologie française après 1945. En effet, un examen du contenu de ses textes suggère que son projet intellectuel était en phase avec les préoccupations de nombre (...) de sociologues à ce moment-là, certes soucieux de construire une sociologie plus empirique inspirée du modèle américain, mais aussi de conserver une ambition théorique susceptible de fournir des concepts opérationnels pour traiter les grandes questions sociales. Ainsi Gurvitch a proposé un paradigme alternatif qui, tout en illustrant une volonté certaine de « reconstruire » la sociologie, a défendu l’idée d’une continuité de la tradition sociologique en France. Il semble que sa réception a été plus favorable que ce que les textes consacrés à la question laissent entendre.This paper considers the reasons for the success of the sociology of Georges Gurvitch from 1945 until his death in 1965. The approach proposed here intends to differentiate itself from the widespread explanation that focuses essentially on the active institutional role that Gurvitch played in the rebuilding of French sociology after 1945. An examination of the contents of his texts suggests that, at that time, the focus of Gurvitch’s interests were in line with the preoccupations of other sociologists who were certainly anxious to construct a more empirical sociology inspired by the American model, but also to conserve a theoretical ambition capable of providing the operational concepts to address the significant social questions. So Gurvitch proposed an alternative paradigm, while proclaiming his desire to « rebuild » sociology, also defended the idea of a certain continuation of the sociological tradition in France. It seems that its reception was much more favourable than we are led to believe by current texts that consider the question today. (shrink)

Traditional liberalism's blindness to cultural concerns has often come under fire, while so‐called “liberal multiculturalism” has made it its business to take a good look at the place of culture within liberal law. According to them, cultural minorities should be recognized. In my opinion, however, their proposals, in fact, almost entirely preclude the possibility that cultural minorities would receive recognition within liberal society. In what follows, I explain my view of these matters and, above all, argue for a more vital (...) understanding of cultural minorities. This will entail presenting a comprehensive view of minority rights within liberal society. (shrink)

À l’heure où l’essence de la médecine cherche à être ressaisie pour repenser une pratique en crise d’identité, la notion de personne peut apparaître comme un point d’ancrage possible. L’auteur examine l’usage qui en est fait dans la littérature professionnelle et dans les avis du Comité consultatif national d’éthique (CCNE) entre 2005 et 2010. La notion de personne apparaît complexe et sert des idéologies qui s’affrontent. Les traditions juridique, théologique et philosophique qui la sous-tendent ont cédé en partie à une (...) nouvelle conception affirmée par la Déclaration universelle des droits de l’Homme de 1948. Celle-ci n’évite pas deux écueils : l’exaltation de l’individu autonome et responsable de la modernité laisse un nombre croissant d’êtres parlants sur le bord du chemin ; l’attention portée au vivant minore le souci des conditions politiques et sociales de l’existence. Faisant retour sur l’éthique de la pratique, l’auteur suggère qu’elle n’a pas besoin, pour consister, de recourir à la notion polémique, complexe et problématique de la personne. (shrink)

The complexity and the variability of parameters occurring in ecological dynamical systems imply a large number of equations.Different methods, more or less successful, have been described to reduce this number of equations. For instance, in the paper of Auger and Roussarie (1993), the authors describe how to obtain a reduction by considering different time-scales. They consider a system which can be sub-divided into sub-systems such that the strengths of the intra-sub-systems interactions are much larger than those of the inter-sub-systems interactions. (...)
