  1. Interpreting the Infinitesimal Mathematics of Leibniz and Euler.Jacques Bair, Piotr Błaszczyk, Robert Ely, Valérie Henry, Vladimir Kanovei, Karin U. Katz, Mikhail G. Katz, Semen S. Kutateladze, Thomas McGaffey, Patrick Reeder, David M. Schaps, David Sherry & Steven Shnider - 2017 - Journal for General Philosophy of Science / Zeitschrift für Allgemeine Wissenschaftstheorie 48 (2):195-238.
We apply Benacerraf’s distinction between mathematical ontology and mathematical practice to examine contrasting interpretations of infinitesimal mathematics of the seventeenth and eighteenth century, in the work of Bos, Ferraro, Laugwitz, and others. We detect Weierstrass’s ghost behind some of the received historiography on Euler’s infinitesimal mathematics, as when Ferraro proposes to understand Euler in terms of a Weierstrassian notion of limit and Fraser declares classical analysis to be a “primary point of reference for understanding the eighteenth-century theories.” Meanwhile, scholars like (...)

The World of the Gift.Jacques Godbout & Alain Caillé - 1998 - Mcgill-Queen's University Press.
The anthropologist Marcel Mauss, in his famous exploration of the gift in "primitive" and archaic societies, showed that the essential aspect of the exchange of presents involved the establishment of a social tie that bound the parties together above and beyond any material value of the objects exchanged. He argued that these intangible mutual "debts" constituted the social fabric. Godbout and Caillé show that, contrary to the modern assumption that societies function on the basis of market exchange and the pursuit (...)

Bergsonian philosophy and Thomism.Jacques Maritain - 1955 - New York,: Greenwood Press.
This critique of Henri Bergson is Jacques Maritain's first book. In it he shows he has a grasp of the thought of St Thomas Aquinas and an ability to show its relevance to other systems such as that of Bergson. This text presents Jacques Maritain's as a philosopher, a Thomist and a critic.

De quoi demain...: dialogue.Jacques Derrida & Elisabeth Roudinesco - 2001
" De quoi demain sera-t-il fait? " interroge Victor Hugo.

Death and Western thought.Jacques Choron - 1963 - New York,: Collier Books.
"Starting with the pre-Socratics, and proceeding through antiquity, the Christian fathers, the Middle Ages, and on to the existentialism and the anxious world of the present, Jacques Choron shows how fear of death, hope of death—or disregard of death—have influenced man's thought. In his unique study, the first of its kind ever published in any language, Dr. Choron succeeds not only in clarifying and synthesizing the great Western philosophers' reflections on death, but also provides a provocative portrait of each (...)

Modern man and mortality.Jacques Choron - 1964 - New York,: Macmillan.
"What is the purpose and meaning of life if death is, as it appears to an ever-broadening segment of modern secularized humanity, total annihilation of the conscious personality?" This is the profound question asked by Jacques Choron in his new book, Modern Man and Mortality. And in his investigation of man's confrontation with the fact of death, he offers the most comprehensive, most objective study ever published on this subject.

    Christianity and Democracy.Jacques Maritain - 2009 - Journal of Interdisciplinary Studies 21 (1-2):143-152.
In this engaging APSA address, Jacques Maritain outlines the essential relationship between Christianity and democracy. In Maritain's view, it is the Gospel or the Christian leaven which has awakened the secular, temporal consciousness to supreme moral principles and the real content of democracy understood as the earthly pursuit of Gospel truths conceming the transcendent origins and destiny of man and society. Christianity teaches the inalienable dignity of every human being fashioned in the image of God, the inviolability of conscience, (...)

Fermat’s Dilemma: Why Did He Keep Mum on Infinitesimals? And the European Theological Context.Jacques Bair, Mikhail G. Katz & David Sherry - 2018 - Foundations of Science 23 (3):559-595.
The first half of the 17th century was a time of intellectual ferment when wars of natural philosophy were echoes of religious wars, as we illustrate by a case study of an apparently innocuous mathematical technique called adequality pioneered by the honorable judge Pierre de Fermat, its relation to indivisibles, as well as to other hocus-pocus. André Weil noted that simple applications of adequality involving polynomials can be treated purely algebraically but more general problems like the cycloid curve cannot be (...)

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a much-discussed subject in the business world. The Internet has become one of the main tools for CSR information disclosure, allowing companies to publicise more information less expensively and faster than ever before. As a result, corporations are increasingly concerned with communicating ethically and responsibly to the diversity of stakeholders through the web. This paper addresses the main question as whether CSR information disclosure on corporate websites is influenced by country of origin and/or industry (...)

To Will & To Do presents one of the most significant theological contributions of the dynamic twentieth-century thinker Jacques Ellul. Benefiting from recent scholarship on Ellul and a discovery of a lost manuscript, this new edition renders the full text available in English for the first time, combining a fresh translation of Volume I with a first English translation of Volume II. Together, the two volumes constitute the introductory first part of Ellul's planned four-part treatment of Christian ethics. Volume (...)

Le lent recul des violences éducatives dans les établissements de l’Éducation surveillée.Jean-Jacques Yvorel - 2023 - Astérion 28 (28).
The reform of establishments for young offenders undertaken in 1945 prohibits any use of physical violence. Official texts and articles from the mainstream and professional media all highlight this rejection of the heavy-handed approach and extol the new pedagogy. If we put aside these printed sources and explore archives such as inspection reports, activity reports, records of both employees and the young people, we can see the discrepancy between actual practices and the new standards promoted by the authorities. The author (...)

Religious Fundamentalism: An Empirically Derived Construct and Measurement Scale.Josέ Liht, I. I. I. Lucian Gideon Conway, Sara Savage, Weston White & Katherine A. O'Neill - 2011 - Archive for the Psychology of Religion 33 (3):299-323.
Items were generated to explore the factorial structure of a construct of fundamentalism worded appropriately for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Results suggested three underlying dimensions: (a) External versus Internal Authority, (b) Fixed versus Malleable Religion, and (c) Worldly Rejection versus Worldly Affirmation. The three dimensions indicate that religious fundamentalism is a personal orientation that asserts a supra-human locus of moral authority, context unbound truth, and the appreciation of the sacred over the worldly components of experience. The 15-item, 3-dimension solution was (...)

William Wales : playing the astronomer.Francis Lucian Reid - 2008 - Studies in History and Philosophy of Science Part A 39 (2):170-175.
William Wales, unlike many of his contemporaries, successfully managed to carve out a career for himself as a civilian astronomer working on a Royal Navy ship. A study of his career reveals the potential tensions and conflicts that could arise between the naval and scientific communities at the end of the eighteenth century. This article shows how on board HMS Resolution Wales skilfully negotiated and defined the new role of the civilian astronomical expert. By comparing Wales’s private journal with his (...)

In 1996 Jacques Derrida gave a lecture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York on the occasion of Antonin Artaud: Works on Paper, one of the first major international exhibitions to present the avant-garde dramatist and poet's paintings and drawings. Derrida's original title, "Artaud the Moma," is a characteristic play on words. It alludes to Artaud's calling himself Mômo, Marseilles slang for "fool," upon his return to Paris in 1946 after nine years in various asylums, while playing (...)
