G. Duménil and M. Vakaloulis here interview J. Lojkine about his latest book, Farewell to the Middle Class. Lojkine’s intention is to question and demystify the ideology of « the middle class », an ideology which is both political (propagated and relayed by social-democracy) and « erudite », insofar as it corresponds to the sociological thesis of the « generalisation of the middle class ». The Crisis of Capitalism and the Crisis of Political Representation History has taught us that there is no direct link between economic crisis and political revolution. Thefailure of Soviet socialism and the failure of European social-democracies can be traced to a commonorigin : the lack of intervention by the popular masses in the processes of social transformation whichhave been monopolised by the bureaucratic or technocratic elites. For want of a genuine democratisation of the political representation and of the modes of (...) government, state centralisation has createda persistent fracture between a caste of professional politicians and the mass of citizens, workers, andrecipients.
