Cloth, DM 98.00.Das Thema verführt zu paradoxen und widersprüchlichen Selbstbezüglichkeiten: die systematische Frage, wie sich die Philosophie zu ihrer Geschichte verhält (eine Frage, die so alt ist wie die Geschichte der Philosophie selbst) kommt ihrerseits um philosophiegeschichtliche Erörterungen (...) nicht herum. Der daher eigentlich naheliegenden Einsicht, daß die Philosophie ihre eigene Geschichte ist, bzw. daß „Philosophieren" immer bedeutet, Philosophiegeschichte zu betreiben, möchte Kolmer durch ein Plädoyer für eine sozusagen „philosophiefreie", d.h. - nun in ihren Worten - eine „‚bloße' Philosophiehistorie" (379 u.ö.) entgegentreten. Unter lockerer Anlehnung an die skeptischen und anti-idealistischen Individualitäts- und Endlichkeitsphilosopheme von Odo Marquard und Hans Michael Baumgartner, soll die Philosophiegeschichte „als der Philosophie gegenüber eigenständige Wissenschaft" (57) alternativ und konträr zu einer durchwegs platonistisch-teleologisch konzipierten „Philosophiegeschichtsphilosophie" aufgefaßt werden, um so pluralistische Deutungsmöglichkeiten und weitere philosophische Entwicklungen („offene Zukunft") zuzulassen, zeitbedingte Kontexte mitzuberücksichtigen, [End Page 445] randständige Philosophen vor dem Vergessen zu bewahren (vergleichbar dem Problem der „Kleinmeister" in der Musikgeschichte) sowie das vorrationale und irreduzibel Individuelle zu seinem Recht kommen zu lassen. Warum diese hehren Ziele aber nur durch eine Abkoppelung von „der" Philosophie überhaupt und nicht lediglich durch die Abkehr von einer bestimmten, zum Teil ja vielleicht wirklich geschichtsphilosophisch „verseuchten" Tradition der Philosophiegeschichte zu erreichen sein sollen, bleibt allerdings unklar.Immerhin unternimmt Kolmer beachtenswerte interpretatorische Anstrengungen, um in den philosophiegeschichtlichen Teilen ihrer Arbeit Hintergründe und Vorausssetzungen derjenigen Konzeptionen von Philosophiegeschichte herauszuarbeiten, die das Kontrastprogramm zu ihrem Plädoyer für eine philosophisch abstinente Philosophiegeschichte darstellen: dabei werden drei kurz abgehandelten zeitgenössischen Positionen (H. Lübbe, L. Braun, J. Mittelstraß) die eingehender besprochenen Theorien der Philosophiegeschichte von Hegel und Kant (in dieser Reihenfolge!) an die Seite gestellt. Der letztgenannte scheint v.a. mit seinen in den Nachlaßaufzeichnungen dokumentierten Intentionen einer „philosophierenden Geschichte der Philosophie" die gemeinsame Plattform der genannten Theorien zu bilden; denn zum einen berufen sich die erwähnten zeitgenössischen Philosophiegeschichtstheoretiker explizit auf ihn, zum anderen liegen deutliche Analogien vor zwischen Kants Anspruch auf definitive Schlichtung aller vorausgegangenen (und noch auftauchenden) philosophischen Streitigkeiten durch den endgültigen (weder Fichtesche noch sonstige „Nachbesserungen" erfordernde) Richtspruch der kritischen Vernunft einerseits und Hegels Behauptung der „Aufhebung" der gesamten philosophiegeschichtlichen Vergangenheit im System des absoluten Geistes andererseits. Um nun Kant von diesen idealistischen Vereinnahmungen zu befreien und ihn ihrem eigenen Projekt wieder anzunähern, versucht nun Kolmer, diese Strukturähnlichkeit dadurch einzuschränken und zu differenzieren, daß sie auf der einen Seite die heutigen Theorien der Philosophiehistorie generell unter Hegelismus-Verdacht stellt (es handle sich um implizite „Theorien der geschichtlichen Vernunft"), auf der anderen aber den Graben zwischen Hegel und Kant tiefer zieht (ganz anders die Konstanzer Dissertation von Jung-Min Kang, Philosophische Philosophiegeschichte von 1998.) Dafür muß man aber bei der Kant-Exegese wegen der geringen Textbasis relativ weit ausholen und die Konfrontation mit Hegel auf allgemeinere geschichtsphilosophische Theoreme verlagern. Die Autorin übersieht dabei großzügig, daß diese sich nicht ohne weiteres auf die spezielle Programmatik der Philosophiegeschichte übertragen lassen, weswegen es hier des öfteren zu interpretatorischen Schnellschüssen und Oberflächlichkeiten kommt. Daß aber ein Buch, das für „historische Bildung" und für eine vorurteilslose („nichtkonzeptualistische") „Arbeit an den Texten" (82) plädiert - die monistisch-idealistische Philosophiegeschichtsphilosophie sei der kompensatorische Versuch, „mit allen Texten, die man nicht selbst verfaßt hat, grundsätzlich schon fertig zu sein, noch bevor man sie gelesen hat" (399) - darüberhinaus eine gewisse Schlampigkeit im Umgang mit den interpretierten Schriften an den Tag legt, entzieht dem Plädoyer für die anti-spekulative „literarische Einstellung zu Texten" (81) das historistisch-philologische Fundament. So will die Autorin auf S. 333 die Sicht Kants auf den vorkritischen Zustand der Philosophie u.a. mit einem Zitat aus Kants Streit der Fakultäten [End Page 446] belegen, wo („A 44") die Rede sei vom „Krieg, d.i. What are physical quantities, and in particular, what makes them quantitative? This book presents an original answer to this question through the novel position of substantival structuralism, arguing that quantitativeness is an irreducible feature of attributes, and quantitative attributes are best understood as substantival structured spaces.

_The Foundations of Arithmetic_ is undoubtedly the best introduction to Frege's thought; it is here that Frege expounds the central notions of his philosophy, subjecting the views of his predecessors and contemporaries to devastating analysis. The book represents the first philosophically sound discussion of the concept of number in Western civilization. It profoundly influenced developments in the philosophy of mathematics and in general ontology.

In the paper I offer a brief sketch of one of the sources of utilitarianism. Our biological ancestry is a matter of fact that is not altered by the way we describe ourselves. With philosophical theories it is otherwise. Utilitarianism can be described in ways that make it look as if it is as old as moral philosophy – as J. S. Mill thought it was. For my historical purposes, it is more useful to have an account that brings out (...) what is specific about Benthamism and its descendants. Let us try to make do with the following. First, utilitarianism asserts that the fundamental requirement of morality is that we are to maximize good, for everyone and not just for the agent. This basic principle presupposes that it makes sense to think of aggregating goods to make a total, and of comparing amounts of good thus aggregated. Second, the good to be brought about is located in feelings of pleasure, and the evil to be avoided in feelings of pain. These feelings have inherent value or disvalue regardless of how they are caused to exist and regardless of their own consequences. Third, all moral principles can be derived from the requirement that good be maximized. The principles involved in evaluating agents as well as in giving moral direction to action are nothing but applications of the basic principle. (shrink)

In recent years a novel picture of Mably's thought has begun to emerge within Anglo-American scholarship, suggesting perhaps a constructive alternative to both the �radical� and the �conservative� interpretations. On this reading, Mably should be seen as neither a proto-socialist nor a reactionary thinker, but as a republican -- a classical republican, in fact, whose writing represents a later Gallic contribution to the political tradition founded by Machiavelli and Harrington.3 In fact, nothing is more obvious to any reader than the (...) absolute centrality of the reference to Graeco-Roman antiquity in his writings, from beginning to end -- with precisely that celebration of the �mixed governments� of Sparta and Rome, and intense preoccupation with the politics of �virtue�, that we have come to associate with the civic humanist tradition. The object of this essay is to provide a brief introduction to this �new� Mably. It will do so chiefly through an examination of a single work, albeit a pivotal one in Mably's career. Entretiens de Phocion, a dialogue first published in 1763, introduced in print for the first time most of the major themes of his mature thought; and it remained by far the most popular work to appear in his lifetime. A brief look at it should give us the opportunity to test the cogency of the civic humanist reading of Mably's thought, as well as to suggest something of thespecific character of the French contribution to the �Atlantic republican tradition�. The American Society for Microbiology addresses issues of research integrity in several ways. There is a Code of Ethics for Society members and an Ethics Committee, a Publications Board has editorial oversight of ethical issues involved in Society journals and other publications, and the Public and Scientific Affairs Board is involved in ethical issues and scientific policies at the national level. In addition, the Society uses meetings and publications to inform and educate members about research integrity.

In this paper, we investigate the link between audit committees and earnings management providing a more comprehensive simultaneous analysis of the influence of audit committee features using a sample of 485 firm-years from Singapore's publicly traded firms during the 2000 2001 calendar period. Empirical findings indicate firms with a higher proportion of independent audit committee members are more effective at constraining earnings management. Firms with audit committees that are more diligent and/or lack the presence of independent directors serving simultaneously on (...) a substantial number of boards and committees are more effective at constraining earnings management. These findings are robust to alternative income-incentives facing corporate management. Overall, our findings have implications for stakeholders, regulators, and corporate governance. For example, our findings infer policymakers may need to focus on other audit committee characteristics to strengthen the committee's ability to constrain earnings management rather than continue the present fixation with independence. Gold & Stoljar 's attempt to disentangle the body-mind problem in time for the end of the decade of the brain deserves praise for its diligence and courage in moving onto the treacherous ground of interdisciplinary discourse. In making their point, they should not have stopped half-way: a more clearly defined experimental paradigm seems necessary to solve this exciting and substantial problem.
