Selected legal aspects of surrogacy.Ivana Honzová, Anna Zemandlová, Leona Prudilová & Lukáš Prudil - 2020 - Human Affairs 30 (1):38-46.
The aim of this article is to analyse the Czech legislation applicable to surrogacy cases while considering some basic social aspects. First the basic facts of surrogacy as a medical reproductive technique are discussed. Surrogacy is also considered as a social trend, and in terms of selected social aspects, such as the growing number of couples interested in surrogacy and their social status. Nevertheless, the main goal of the paper is to analyse selected legal problems as regards surrogacy and the (...)

Ethical issues of human enhancement technologies.Ivana Greguric - 2014 - Journal of Information, Communication and Ethics in Society 12 (2):133-148.
Purpose – This paper aims to focus on the modern development of bionics and linking new technologies with the human nervous system or other biological systems that cause changes of the human biological structure. Design/methodology/approach – The paper is a discursive evaluation of technological progress and new systems where computers and machines integrate, making a single matrix entity – the cyborg. Here fundamental questions arise, such as what it means to be human and what is and what should be a (...)

The Ethnographic Method in CSR Research: The Role and Importance of Methodological Fit.Ivana Milosevic & A. Erin Bass - 2018 - Business and Society 57 (1):174-215.
Corporate social responsibility research has burgeoned in the past several decades. Despite significant advances, our review of the literature reveals a problematic gap: We know little about how culture, practices, and interactions shape CSR. On further investigation, we discover that limited research utilizes ethnography to understand CSR, which may provide some explanation for this gap. Thus, the purpose of this article is to illustrate the utility of ethnography for advancing business and society research via a multistage framework that demonstrates how (...)

Geo-heliocentric models and the Society of Jesus: from Clavius’s resistance to Dechales’s Mathesis Regia.Ivana Gambaro - 2021 - Annals of Science 78 (3):265-294.
ABSTRACT In 1588 Tycho Brahe proposed a new cosmological system keeping a motionless Earth at the centre of the world. In the first half of the following century the reception of Tycho’s model within the Society of Jesus was characterized by a strong resistance at the beginning, followed by a long and winding path, and then a good fortune, whereas heliocentric models were increasingly investigated in European observatories. In 1651 a Jesuit astronomer, Giovan Battista Riccioli, published the Almagestum novum, an (...)

This paper aims to show that propaganda and persuasion are underlined by two forms of communication, one aiming at a monologue, and the other aiming at a dialogue, which in practice do often coexist, with one or the other prevailing at a particular time. In order to understand propaganda or persuasion, we need to study them as part of the systems (e.g. institutions, organizations, communication) to which they belong, rather than treat them as decontextualized phenomena. Both propaganda and persuasion involve (...)

This editor’s introduction to the issue recalls the main methodological approaches to persuasion, rhetoric and propaganda in social psychology. It summarizes the classical theories issued from Hovland’s Yale Communication Program in experimental social psychology, like dissonance, attitude changes, inoculation approach, elaboration likelihood model. Yet there are, today, competing perspectives on persuasion, which turn attention to the meaning of persuasion in modern complex societies, in technology and the media. These perspectives place emphasis not on changes of attitudes, but on communication, social (...)

What happens when people born in a “non-existing” country are faced with Italian burocracy? What happens if they want to get married? This short paper discusses, in a humorous way, some serious problems of our everyday social life made of documents, stamps, statements, licences, certificates, the immense realm where esse est scribi is a basic principle. What comes to light is that documents and data they posess determine our lives in a crucial way, and when they are not updated the (...)

From a more physicalistic point of view the paper gives a brief overview of Boscovich’s thought about the bilayer of space and time, real space and time, and mathematical space and time, without going into philosophical analysis in detail. The paper provides examples of possible correspondence between Boscovich’s thought and physicalist concepts in modern physics.

  27. Don't count on it.Peter Pesic - unknown
Gregory Chaitin has done seminal work on the foundations of mathematics, especially the meaning of randomness and undecidability. In Meta Maths, he offers his ideas in a new popular version, which has a special interest because it comes directly from their originator. Long associated with the IBM Watson Research Center, Chaitin comes across as a kind of mathematical Richard Feynman, intuitive and high-spirited, irreverent and plain-spoken. Through this jovial persona, he presents many serious ideas in an engagingly dishevelled way, mixing (...)

    Plato and Zero.Peter Pesic - 2004 - Graduate Faculty Philosophy Journal 25 (2):1-18.
Greek mathematics did not know the zero. Without denying this commonplace observation, I would like to explore ways in which Plato’s Theaetetus and Sophist may be read as reaching towards the concept of the zero, if not towards anything like its Hindu-Arabic symbol. This may help connect Plato’s reflections on mathematics with his arguments about Nonbeing.

Health within illness: The negativity of vulnerability revised.Ivana Zagorac & Barbara Stamenković Tadić - 2022 - Medicine, Health Care and Philosophy 25 (2):207-217.
This paper attempts to philosophically articulate empirical evidence on the positive effects of illness within the wider context of a discussion of the positive aspects of vulnerability. The conventional understanding holds that to be vulnerable is to be open to harms and wrongs; it is to be fragile, defenseless, and of compromised autonomy. In this paper, we challenge the assumption that vulnerability consists of nothing but powerlessness and dependence on others. This paper attempts to: (1) outline the theoretical conceptualisation of (...)

The dialogical mind: common sense and ethics.Ivana Marková - 2016 - Cambridge, United Kingdom: Cambridge University Press.
Dialogue has become a central theoretical concept in human and social sciences as well as in professions such as education, health, and psychotherapy. This 'dialogical turn' emphasises the importance of social relations and interaction to our behaviour and how we make sense of the world; hence the dialogical mind is the mind in interaction with others - with individuals, groups, institutions, and cultures in historical perspectives. Through a combination of rigorous theoretical work and empirical investigation, Marková presents an ethics of (...)

Nadalje, vide doprinos i (...)

Language and authenticity.Ivana Marková - 1997 - Journal for the Theory of Social Behaviour 27 (2&3):265–275.
It is argued that the analysis of language should play a central role in the study of social psychological phenomenon. For example, there is evidence that habitual inauthenticity in the use of language which was practised in the Eastern and Central European totalitarian systems was partly related to the breakdown of moral principles and to the loss of identity. Using two sentences, ‘Proletarians of the whole world – unite’ and ‘The Bororo are arara’, it is shown that they can carry (...)

This article focuses on the work of Czech Jesuit Cardinal Tomáš Špidlík (1919-2010), continued in his pupils, both in Rome, where he taught for most of his life, and in the Czech Republic. It explores in particular how studies of hesychasm marked their understanding of deification. It asks in which sense their work can be seen as a Western attempt to rehabilitate the doctrine of deification in its experiential and theological complexity, where they contribute to the renewal of the communication (...)

Ernst Lubitsch, the great author of Hollywood comedy and pioneer of such genres as the sophisticated romantic comedy, the musical, and the screwball comedy, is a relatively overlooked figure in mainstream film theory. In this collection, renowned world thinkers and philosophers position Lubitsch as the premium director of subversive cinema, reflecting on his attitude toward love and politics which correspond to contemporary issues.Followers of the Hegelian, Marxist, Freudian, Lacanian, and Deleuzian traditions discuss thephilosophical, political, and ethical dimensions of Lubitsch's late (...)

The paper is based on the experiences of a fieldwork researcher. Two studies of everyday life are compared. In spite of the differences in theoretical frameworks and methodologies, important similarities are identified, leading to identical basic results. These similarities are to be found in the dependence of the everyday survival on political survival, of everyday life on political life, of coping on political developments. The similarity is proved by pointing to the shared broader socio-historical framework in which both studies have (...)
